Hahaha, nerd fight!!! Forums (critical thinking & logic communities in forums and on Facebook) have been my internet pastime for 25 years, and I HATE nested comments/threading on forums. I avoid Reddit precisely for that reason.
25 years... *sigh* kids these days. In 1983 I was already online in international forums, MUDs and so on. Joined the "new" Internet somewhere in 1990 when it first opened to the public with a text-based broswer... I have seen things...so many things!

@elise4270 - I was just going to post that by my time calculation you and the @honunui relay team should be finished and enjoying some post race food! 😄
I think we made decent time... we started at 6am and I think we finished just before noon. @HonuNui can confirm that end time. I’m not sure if i wanna binge eat pizza, although they have some really great food choices here that we don’t get, so I wouldn’t really waste it on ‘za, or take a nap. Maybe a quick nap and I’ll let Eric take me out for a snack...
ETA @runner_girl83 and @lporter229 welcome back!
ETA A... @Orphia The local paper is doing a story on the ultra. So we will have to be on the look out for our mention regarding honoring Dennis.17 -
Were any of you around long enough ago to remember the Shareware craze? In 1996 I made into PC/Computing's best downloads on the internet.
Those were fun times... heh, the magazine still has an unopened AOL 3.5" disk!

Ha, yes, I remember all the shareware in the 90's. I thought that was so awesome that you could get programs for free or a few bucks. Granted, alot of it was crap, but you never knew if you were going to strike gold with one.
Yay, way to go @Elise4270 and @HonuNui! Time to celebrate!
Thanks for the encouragement @katharmonic and @skippygirlsmom.
ETA: Oh, and for sure I had an AOL account!9 -

One of y'all needs to post a race report, and still looking for pictures, in case you think we forgot!7 -

Can I get in on the nerd fight? I wasn't really active online until about 1993, but I was a professional paid moderator at one of the first large gaming forums. Also, I was in the beta test for Ultima Online, the first mmorpg. Imagine a time before people had any idea how awful an idea it was to put a bunch of folks in an online sandbox and expect them to play nice!9 -

UO was the best!! I lost so many hours in that game on my 56k modem! Heh. WOW and the others would nit exist save for UO. It was not the first MMORPG but it did blast wide open the genre.3 -
My parents had to get call waiting in 1995 because I was spending too much time on various BBS and they were tired of no phone calls getting through.
I met my husband online before that was really a thing (either 2000 or 2001 - started dating 2002). On an online text-based RPG forum site that doubles as a fantasy doorstopper series fansite.6 -

It's not that sort of fight. I wasn't claiming to be the oldest or the best online.
Just voicing forum tastes.
This one's pretty good as far as forums go. A lot of them really make you think they're a dying format.
Either that or a lot of admins have got too old and crusty to attempt to upgrade to the latest software version.
I owned/ran a PHPBB forum community for about 5 years, and learnt a lot. Now I'm admin of a few Facebook groups, and find it a good format for sharing interests.

Running internet forums is a thankless job. I did it for years too. I think either the MFP mods are super stars or we are just a pretty reasonable crowd. Probably both.0 -

I can't think of anything before UO that would count as "massively multiplayer," although I can think of some building games and forum based games. What are you thinking of that predates it?
I don't think anyone had any idea how easy it would be to spend hours playing. At one point I'm pretty sure I threatened to throw my wedding ring out the window if my husband didn't start limiting his time in UO. Ah, good times!3 -
January goal: 75 miles
1/1: 3.11 miles
1/4: 4.6 miles
1/5: 4.21 miles
11.92/75 miles completed
I got a 4.21 mile run in today. It was so pretty. The sun was shining and it was just gorgeous. It was almost warm at 73F, but perfect in shorts and a tank top. Tomorrow should be nice for my long run. I'll probably be able to get out early before it is too warm.
Way to go @Elise4270 and @HonuNui I'm really looking forward to the race report and pictures!
There were lots of good runs and great races! It is just so hard to respond personally to each one, but lots of likes and hugs!

January Goal: Do more than last month

January 4, 2019 Hilo to Volcano Ultra 50k Relay. In memory of @keeprunningfatboy
Ticker is my goal for 2019 and progress to date:
Race Report:
We started at 6am at Reeds Island Park in Hilo. Our team members were Sookyung (my neighbor), Evita (who is the niece of another neighbor, and who is visiting from Manilla, Phillipines), @elise4270, Eric and me.
Sookyung took the first leg of 2.7 miles (in the dark...), handed off to Eric, then Elise, me and Evita.
Repeat x 3...EXCEPT, when we got to the summit, the route turned off the main highway to Wright road. The race was to end at Cooper Center, and on my last leg (remember, I'm fourth), I turned where I was supposed to....and Cooper Center was .25 miles away. Which means, somehow we were short a leg. I asked a passerby who told me the route continued on PAST Cooper Center, and the turnaround for last leg was much further up the road.
So, I called our driver (DH) .....who didn't answer. I texted him. While running. He called me. The call dropped. He texted me, "we are waiting at Cooper Center". Finally was able to connect and told him to keep driving up Wright road. He said "they are all walking to meet you so you can all finish together. "
NO!!!Keep driving.....but they didn't. I finally reached the handoff site for the last leg....and figured if they were walking to meet me, it would be awhile (since I had now run a mile past my scheduled leg).....so I kept going, made the turnaround, and finally ran into them all about .75 miles later....tagged Evita and she took off. Eric ran again, as he liked the terrain. The others kindly kept me company cause I was....done. DH finally came with the car, picked us up and drove us back to near Cooper Center, where we waited for Evita, and all ran together to finish...at 12:03.
At the first handoff, a local reporter was there and asked us a few questions. She stopped again at the second handoff, we told our story of Dennis, she took pics and names. We'll see if we make the papers!
Handoff, Hill from He!! and happy finishers!

Saturday Club-group run. 2 groups the speeders and the middle of the packers, which is my pace.
5 km today with 4 ladies then they turned back to get 10 km.
I kept going out another km to get 12 and pay homage to Dennis (@keeprunningfatboy)......
2 of the ladies just started to come out with us before Christmas so us old timers take turns Sheep Dogging them ( stay with them for 1-2 km ) and switch at the walk breaks we have added in to help them adjust to longer distances. Was a little tough for the newbies today as we had a mini warm spell which created a lot of smush snow ( like running in damp sand ) and ice and then had a 2cm snowfall - just enough to hide the ice but not enough to cover it and give new-solid footing. It was a good day for them to get the little pointers about hunting for the best traction conditions and shorten your stride on the ice to help keep your feet under your hips more.
It was one of those days where I felt good, the Hills that were beating me up before Christmas I powered up without ant difficulty.
As a guy running with a group of ladies you get used to All Topics being discussed - quite often I just slow down and drop back or cruise ahead as I have nothing to add.
I didn't realize how much I was holding back my pace on the outbound until I looked at my raw data - a small increase in pace once I was out by myself. Which helps explain why the hills felt easy today. Usually it's the other way - when you are running with a group you seem to slowly build pace until everyone is on the ragged edge of max HR.@martaindale I don't plan routes through Strava, but if it's anything like Garmin, then you may find the issue is with routing. Sometimes when I click on the map to create the next waypoint, the route will double back on itself as it backtracks a trail to get to a road for instance, and if I don't catch it, I end up with added distance that I'm not actually going to run. One way to check this is to switch on the mile markers, and eyeball the route to make sure that the mile markers look somewhat evenly placed. If one or more looks short, the route has probably doubled back over itself.
My experience mirrors @garygse above. I believe it is because Strava uses the base Garmin Data sets ( they probably cross-feed/share ) and if it doesn't see an existing Road or Trail in the Database that is when it doubles back. I found that if I added in extra waypoints sometimes it would re-calculate and give me the correct-true planned route & distance.
It's like the GPS in a vehicle telling you to turn when you know the best route is straight ahead.
Do you ever notice that the Garmin Voice can start to sound Pissy after a while when it says Re-Calculating?

Well @pastorvincent, I am a bit older than you...long before PC magazine or PC's, we were playing a mainframe precursor to Dungeons and Dragons when I first started working in IT in the very early 80s. I hated AOL and never had an account with them. I also worked with graphical teletype machines for the scientific arm of one of the oil companies before PC's were really a thing. We did have a 'remote online terminal' that ran at 300 baud for anyone who remembers that and yes the very large floppy disks that were actually floppy A few years later I worked for a bank that had one of the first widely networked and interconnected ATM systems5

3.02 is almost 5k, which is 3.1, so yes, a lot for a new runner! When you first start out adding mileage, don't worry about going fast. It's okay to be very slow, even slower than your walking pace for some people, as long as you are doing the gait of running. Speed will come naturally later!
Thanks for the insight. I will definitley keep that in mind. I am happy you commented because I was, earlier on, feeling a bit discouraged by my numbers and unsure if it was a normal speed for a newbie.

Ease out of my downtime and run a HM, or a 30 km would be nice (Last HM was Dec 2, last 30ish was 11 Nov).
@Orphia you sure do 😀. One older female introverted slow turtle runner from the Barossa Valley at your service!
@Kimtrooper Lovely to meet you! I'm somewhere as the crow flies between you and Melbourne.@orphia you are no longer outnumbered by us (2) kiwis! Let the trans tasman battle commence!

Yay!!! It's on!!!runner_girl83 wrote: »Hi all, I used to post here a few years ago, not sure why I stopped but hope you'll have me back!
2018 was a really crappy year for me as I lost my Dad to bowel cancer. I stopped runni g for a few months after as I used to run to help deal with his treatments and stress. Once he passed I felt like I didn't know how to run anymore.
Fast forward 7 months and I am back to running 5-10 km each run.. I now use running as a way to remember my Dad.. Think about the funny things he used to do or say.
I've just signed up to run a 30km ultra trail in July (on his birthday which is freaky) so I've got something to work towards now.
Yesterday was my longest run to date at 26km (virtual run) using Parkrun as part of the run too.
Currently I'm sitting at 42km for January.
Kare.
@runner_girl83 Welcome back!! Hang on a sec, am I getting a bit enthusiastic or are you in Australia too?
Guess that means the Aussie run gang is winning if it’s 3vs 2 kiwis 😜7 -
