@girlinahat I love the photos and am a bit envious! I agree with you that a damp cold feels colder than a dry cold. I think I read someone here saying the opposite a couple of days ago though.
@ddmom0811 are you going on one of those cruise ships with a track on the upper level? If so I want to see the run on Strava to see the ovals shifting as the ship steams ahead.
That was me. I can say from my experience 40 in Phoenix feels more like Wisconsin 50 than WI 40. I wouldn't say Wisconsin is damp but tends to have more humidity (or maybe its dew point I don't know) than Phoenix.
And you know your from Wisconsin if you say "ope sorry" when someone else runs into you. 😂7 -
January goal: 75 miles
1/1: 3.11 miles
1/4: 4.6 miles
1/5: 4.21 miles
1/6: 8.02 miles
1/8: 3.11 miles
1/9: 3.15 miles
1/10: 3.15 miles
1/13: 9.01 miles
1/15: 3.15 miles
41.51/75 miles completed
I didn't get a chance to update my run from yesterday. I ran at lunch and went 3.15 miles. It was a pretty good run. I'm planning to run again at lunchtime today. It should be about 55F and some sun so I am hoping it will be nice. It is supposed to be nice again tomorrow. I'm debating whether I should get up early and run before work. It will be kind of cold and I don't really like running when it is both cold and dark but it shouldn't be as cold as it has been lately and I really like getting my run in first thing. Lunchtime runs are good, but they are also kind of hard because I am so short on time. I can really only get 3 miles done and then getting back to work on time is really hard. I might also run after work because I am really craving some sunshine. I guess I'll see how today's lunch run goes and then look at the weather for tomorrow and then decide.
I also find all of the talk about temperatures very interesting. I see some of the temperatures that many of y'all run in and I honestly can't even imagine going outside in that. My run on Sunday was so cold to me and it wasn't even technically freezing. I'm from Texas and while I don't like 100F, I can deal with the 90's and 100's a lot easier than the 30'sF. We may get 1 or 2 days of temperatures in the teens each year. The number one reason I have never run in snow is because we don't really get snow here. Sometimes we get slush or snowflakes in the air that melt as they hit the ground. And when we do get snow it usually starts as rain and then freezes and then is just a light dusting of snow over a layer of ice. I do think it all depends on what you are used to though. I've seen a few posts on here about not wanting to run when it is over 70F and to me that is very mild. But I cannot imagine any temperature with a negative or below in front of it. I honestly don't think I have ever experienced anything colder than 14F.
@rheddmobile I don't think you are being whiny about the cold temperatures for your race.
@7lenny7 So glad you are running again!
@_nikkiwolf_ Hope the knee feels better.
@girlinahat Beautiful pictures! Although to be honest that looks way too cold for me! LOL

That looks really nice!
On the temperature discussion, I've been thinking this winter about a guy I know who has trained his body to be accustomed to cold temperatures. He goes outside in shorts, tshirt and with bare feet for walks in the snow or just to sit in his lawn chair in deep snow on his porch like I sit on the beach in summertime. I don't understand why he isn't getting frostbite, but he's used some sort of "training plan" to get to this point. In my thoughts I was comparing it to people who train their bodies to run ultra-long distances that would harm a "non-acclimated" person if they just went out and tried to run the race without training. I've also noticed that my toes aren't getting as cold this year when running outside, and am wondering if I'm just getting used to it. Our bodies can do some amazing things!5 -
Missed a day and a half of posts and now there's 100+ to catch up on? You guys move so fast!
I was supposed to do 9 miles yesterday with 5 miles at HM pace, but conditions were too icy (specifically black ice) and slushy so I called it quits at 5 miles and came home and shoveled out my car from its parking space behind my building instead.
Today I went to the gym and did a 20 minute strength workout and then a ladder workout on the treadmill: 1 mile to warm up, then a progression from 5k to marathon pace with intervals increasing from 1/4 mile to 1 mile (.25 @ 5k, .5 at 10k, .75 at HM, 1 mile at marathon pace) and back down, then a mile to cool down. All told, it was 7.5 miles / an hour and a half at the gym total, so now I'm pooped.

That was my real initial reaction when I read about the "ope" phenomenon and then I heard myself saying it ALL THE TIME! (and I haven't lived in WI for almost 13 years)4 -

I got my lunch run in today! I just had time for 3.11 miles. It was a good run, but I was really just getting into it when I had to head home and get back to work. I definitely enjoyed getting out in the sunshine.
@noblsheep That looks like an amazing place to run!

I'll keep that in mind. *stares longingly at PNW*3 -
Ah the weather. That variable that is so frustrating. Of course those of us in the southern (best) half of the globe are experiencing the opposite effect. Though today is warm, wet and not in a good way. its overcast, windy, humid but only around 22 degrees. would be good running weather except for the humidity. I had to laugh at the UK comments, I remember being over there and it would hit 25 degrees, and the news would all be worried about everyone frying to death. We were like, this is lovely, not too hot,not too cold, but when you aren't used to it and its so HUMID. Why don't we call the UK the soggy isles. it seems so appropriate. When it never rains, it mists.
Well DD 4.5 is doing much better now, whew. Last night I crashed around 8:30pm, and had decided not to run this morning as that extra hour sleep was definitely more important, and a good decision was made. I feel somewhat human again. Also my legs have mostly stopped protesting from Mondays workout, so its time to torture them again. Still the soreness wont last as long this time, whew.
That said, I also caught miss 4.5's cold. so far its pretty mild but annoying. Tomorrow I will be going out for a short run, probably 5k, since I haven't done anything since Monday. This new schedule is really working out for me (sarcasm font). I suppose I shouldn't complain after 1 week, its the settling in period.

Haha no doubt.
I love it here in the PNW!2 -
Can’t keep up with thread or find my posts so losing track of my mileage but think tonight’s 2 gets me to 17. Was a bit more as I did some sprints at the end as I was disappointed with myself for quitting early, and as I could do sprints I obviously hadn’t worked hard enough.7

Jan 2 (3.1mi run) (4.1mi walk)

Jan 7 (1mi run) (.5mi walk)
Jan 8 (3.1mi run) (.5mi walk)
Jan 10 (3.1mi run)
Jan 12 (3.1mi run)
Jan 16 (3.1mi run)
(20.3mi/30mi) (6.3mi walk)
Yay, the sidewalks were “clear enough” to run this afternoon. And by “clear enough” I mean I thought the likelihood of slipping and falling was minimal enough to risk it. There were plenty of slow spots picking my way over snow and ice, but it could have been worse.
To add to the discussion about one’s body acclimating to the local weather, I grew up in south Georgia (as in right off the Florida border, basically in a swamp) and never got used to the summers. I would be wearing tank tops and shorts in January still because I was so hot. Since I turned 23, I have lived in north Virginia and I can’t handle the summers here any better tbh. 🤣 There are days here and there during the winter when I’m really just like “This is ridiculous, I’m not a yeti yall”, but for the most part I’m happy and just dress properly now. I apparently am just not meant for the heat.11 -

1/12/19: 5.88 Miles
1/13/19: 4.41 Miles

Wow, I don’t check in for a couple of days and now I am nearly 350 messages being. I will try to skim through everything, but I know I probably won’t have time to respond to much.
I hope everyone’s year is off to a great start. I completely blew my goal right out of the water. I have already met my goal and we are only half way through the month. I will definitely have to rethink my goals for the future months.
