@MobyCarp A well run race as I have come to expect from you!
WTG @amymoreorless !
@7lenny7 Looks like a great run! BTW what time did you say smoking will be done, ?
3 quick miles before work this morning, and in looking at my training calendar I will probably hit my stretch goal of 150 miles this month, but not quite as far as I wanted to get due to the weather. As it warms up here it will be easier for me to just throw on shorts and a tee and head out vs having to dress for the cold. Nevertheless I am happy with my monthly mileage thus far.9 -

112, 115...who cares, you're still rocking it ma'am!5 -
@amymoreorless YAY! AWESOME completing a marathon in those hot and humid conditions! You are a beast!!4
-
@amymoreorless congratulations ma'am, you have now become another addition to my 'in permanent awe of' list, as has @RunsOnEspresso - 100 miles in a month, that's like some kind of dream to me (atm in fact I'm fantasizing over being able to do 50 in a month again). @workaholic_nurse watching your mileage on the Run the Year team stats you're now on the list too!
Congrats on another great race to @MobyCarp too, and hugs to @Avidkeo, hope it is something passing and non-important.
Now re the hair discussion, I did exactly that, cut fed up of running with hot sweaty hair sticking to the back of my neck so off it all went about a year ago. I absolutely loved not having to put up with hair touching my neck and it taking like 2 minutes to wash it and not needing to think about styling it or even having to check a mirror before leaving the house (I have really unruly disobedient curly hair, I have to add). The downside is my husband hated it and I've finally got tired of hearing him beg me to let it grow again, so at the moment I'm sporting about 3 inches of frizz that all insists on sticking up and out. I'm kind of hoping he acts up so I can go cut it all off again in anger :-/
I go back to the physio on Wednesday, hopefully she'll give me the ok to start running more again which will coincide with the beginning of week 4 of C25k. OMG I'm going to get to run something really huge like 16 minutesa day again, yay! We went for a walk along the beach this morning and I was hating on everyone I saw running, I'm really not a nice person when I haven't been for a run lol.10 -
Short and easy run today, just to earn a couple hundred calories to cover my pizza!
My hair was over two feet long a few months ago and now it’s only touching my neck because I’m due a cut. I cut it because it was a pain to constantly wash after exercise (this was before I took up running) and lying on the floor for certain strength training was ridiculously difficult with a giant bun sticking off my head. I let it grow because at the time that was easiest (no styling- wash, braid and go) and then I cut it because that was easiest. I’m going to go even shorter at my next appointment I think. As for the husband, who definitely and vocally prefers long hair - I told him over a decade ago that if he wants to let me pick out what he wears every day I’ll let him choose my hairstyle. Obviously, he didn’t take me up on that offer. 🤣

Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend!11 -
@katharmonic ! Just another example how this group is amazing, even if it’s simple support through sharing silly or awesome socks! I’ve never encountered waterproof socks. I may have to add them to my collection. Thanks so much.
ETA we’ll keep you accountable on the pull up. In solidarity I’ll plank or do “sally” push ups. (Push ups to Moby’s Flower- bring sally up). I won’t leave you “hangin’” LOOK! here it is if anyone wants to join in. It’s fun! Or join in the pull ups!
I tried this , it is not fun- it is torture and I have weak little noodle arms apparently.10 -

I do too. I just lay on the ground instead of holding myself up on the down6 -
I was tired of running all week on the treadmill so today I decided to bundle up and run outside in -12F. I know I've run in sub zero temps before for a race but I'm still trying to gauge how many layers when it gets cold (the wind bothers me more than the cold temps). My running store had a winter clearance sale so I bought a new Brooks windproof LSD jacket yesterday for 50% off and it worked great today, so well that I think I need to take off another layer underneath because I was pretty warm by the end. One area that wasn't happy was my ears even though I had a hat and buff on, I think the buff might not have been staying high enough to help block the wind. I think next time I will put the buff on and then the hat so it's tucked in.

Way to go, @amymoreorless! I'm so in awe of you guys who can run more in a single day than I can in a week, two weeks, or even a month in the case of our ultra runners.8
-
@Orphia, Congratulations on your HM and 30K!
@MobyCarp Congrats on your race - top in AG and 10th overall is fantastic. Love you bling for the year too! You're amazing!
@amymororless WTG on completing your marathon! I think your time was great. Right now, I can't do 2 miles at that pace. Hoping to improve, but still...
You all are continuing to inspire me to get out there and run, even if I am just beginning again, and slow. I've managed to make all of my planned runs this week. Yeah me! I also walked 3 days. Today the temperature was 45°F (7°C) so ran outside for the first time in 3 weeks. It is definitely different from the treadmill, which helps me maintain whatever pace I decide to run. Even though my treadmill has programs that changes the incline automatically, it is different from running up the hills on my driveway. Not sure what their inclines are, but a lot more than the treadmill inclines to on the programs I use. So, even though I was slower today, I count that as a win. Per my training schedule, I did 2.5 miles today. It took me 33:25 minutes to do it, but I got it done. For the week, I ran a total of 7.66 miles. I probably won't make my goal for the month, but it is going to be closer that I've been since I joined this group in August.

Oh wow... I should not let myself get that behind on this thread. You would think that 35 days of furlough would mean I would stay totally caught up. But apparently I had even lazier plans than reading stuff on the internet.
I don’t remember when I last updated. But I have been fairly consistent at some sort of workout this month. Hopefully I can keep that up now that I’m back to work. Today’s 3.1 mile wog brings me up to 13.7 wog miles for the month. I’m also counting 10ish miles of powerwalking- because I was walking instead of wogging because the boyfriend wanted to join me... and because he has to eventually pass a pack test this year, and my wogs have been so slow, I imagine the pace was fairly similar. So 23.7 for the month? Best in forevers. But may be it for the month. We aren’t getting too far below zero for temps. But when it’s teens for temps, plus snow, and your weather forecast includes the phrase “winds calming to 60mph later in the day”.... yeah, I crazy, but dont think I’m that crazy yet.
Today’s run was one of those “almost right, but not quite” sort of situations.
Made it 3.1 miles total. I SHOULD have put my yaktrax on. But 1. I apparently thought I suddenly developed proprioception and coordination. (I was wrong.) and 2. I thought I was out before the snowplows had gotten to residential streets, and the roads would be fluffy snow. Instead, I was playing chess (or battle ship?) with snowplows my whole run. And the roads were slick. Like I had several people stop shoveling to look at my crazy butt attempting to run. (In fairness to them, not sure how much of that was my wog-skating and how much is because I apparently try my hardest to not match any 2 articles of brightly colored layers when running in the cold. Although one, on the steepest incline I attempted today, was definitely laughing at my half running half sliding backwards, and called me out on the “nice” weather I was out in. I am already aware my attempts to stay upright are resulting/will continue to result in muscles I don’t remember having, being very vocal the next couple of days.
I almost passed back by my house to collect the traction devices, but I knew if I got back inside, I wouldn’t go back out. So, I kept slipping along.
Other things I learned, besides wear the dam yaktrax... I’m still struggling with layers, as my layers were procured when I was 20-30lbs lighter. I actually did halfway decent, with two noteable exceptions. 1. Need ball cap and earmuff instead of stocking hat. But with my hair short and no ponytail to hold ball cap on, stocking hat seems easier... but it gets soooo hot. 2. Due to my extra fluff... I need to layer with longer shirts. Belly rolls escaping due to too small shirts rising up, in 20degree weather is not fun.
Regarding things I actually retained long enough to comment after my rapid reading attempt to catch up:
Regarding hair convos. I cut my waist length hair off to a pixie about a year ago. I do not regret it, except for like the above ball cap issue. And short money times (like furlough) when I could easily ignore needing a haircut with long hair, and I’m fighting a mop head now that I’m being a cheapskate with short hair.
@mobycarp being a former staff member for a homeless shelter- your volunteer occupation is very much appreciated.
Socks.... I actually wasn’t wearing any while catching up... but I threw back on the pair I ran in today because they are the only socks I have ever been given that came with a story, or maybe an ancestry??And I’m really enjoying this fun socks game.
Farm to feet socks- like you find out where the wool came from, and then can follow supply chain clear to your feet. (I almost made a run in the cold mistake here too, started with my usual lowcuts and then went “Wait, snow and bare ankles=bad, and changed to these.)
Also, while I’m trying to figure out this “spoiler” thing (if I failed, you will know)... and we are talking about elephant socks and the like... my sister in law got me deadlift socks for Christmas . P.S. I’m loving seeing more on this thread develop a lifting problem, also.
Yes, the deadlift socks ARE neon pink... with unicorns ..... AND NARWHALS!!! .... And they are amazing.

So much to comment on!
First, big congratulations @amymoreorless on completing your marathon! And is such hot and humid conditions. Way to persevere - that's super tough! Hope you are resting and hydrating and EATING to recover.
@RunsOnEspresso congrats on reaching a 100 mile a month milestone!
@louubelle and @martaindale I so relate to the scheduling around how many times I need to wash my hair. Sometimes when I have an evening workout I don't wash it and work out in the morning again the next day to get two for one. It's kind of gross (but I do usually take a shower, just not washing my hair) but I can't be bothered to constantly deal with my hair. Boy have I become more relaxed about what I consider acceptable for hair styling since I started running.
@7lenny7 glad you and Kody are enjoying trail running again. Hope you get lots of snow!

Today I had to go to work for a while and then I met a friend at the gym for some treadmill time. She is just cleared to start running again after a hamstring injury and was nervous about her two allowed 5 minute easy run intervals. It was great to be able to do our own things speed-wise and be able to support each other. She did great, and felt pretty good after her walking and running. When she was done, I was already over 4 miles in, so just had a little bit to finish up to get to 5. Made the time go very quickly today.
I then did some of my pull-up challenge work, although I had to do some substitutions already from what the plan called for. I couldn't figure out how to set up for inverted rows with a barbell on the rack so will have to ask my trainer how to do that out on the floor so I don't flounder around. I did some TRX rows instead.
On the pull-up challenge - thanks for the encouragement @RunsOnEspresso and @Scott6255! And @Elise4270 thanks for the solidarity! My trainer introduced us to Moby's Flower song also. We could choose either squats or high to low plank though. I did squats. That part where you have to stay down and hold it is pretty brutal. Everyone try it! @martaindale also don't mention to your coach that there is a similar challenge for the AC/DC song Thunderstruck. My trainer thought that was so awesome too (it was not).
Great job, everyone! I noticed and liked lots of great reports from runs this weekend. Last week of January is here! Yikes! This week is promising to be very busy and stressful work-wise. I need to stick to my plan because I'll need the stress relief of running and working out, even if it would be easier and more time efficient to skip some of it. Gonna have to coffee up and power through.

Morning all. Its Monday today and a public holiday here which means no work! I slept in a bit, strapped on my shoes and immediately noticed pain in the outside of my rt ankle. I continued my warm up and started my run, but half a km in the pain was just getting worse. So I stopped. Walked home with a slight limp and googled. Looks like peroneal ligament? I know someone else gets this. What's the solution? New shoes (that's usually the answer haha). I've massaged it which seems to have helped and will rest it today. Could it be from a lot of barefoot walking? I have relatively flat feet.
@Avidkeo Hugs!
I have flat feet and wear custom orthotics with neutral shoes when running.
At the start of this summer, after I started wearing thongs (shut up USAians I mean flip-flops ), my foot/ankle hurt for a couple of weeks. I wear Birkenstock thongs which have support, but it's not my usual orthotic shape. My foot/ankle improved as summer has progressed but it still twinges a bit though it managed 30 km yesterday without it complaining.
Just a thought that yours might be due to something similar.4 -

I'm with @katharmonic on the hair thing. I use shampoo and conditioner once a week after my long run, and just wet my long hair in water in a bath every day, towel dry it, then put it in a high bun. Neither my husband nor any of my blunt family, friends, or acquaintances have ever made the slightest of comments that anything seems wrong.
People spend so much money on shampoo to remove oil, then they use conditioner to add oil, I just don't buy into that (except once a week), so long as you're using water to rinse out dirt.5 -
Thanks for the kind encouragement after my 30 km yesterday. You're all lovely. My legs feel fine today, so that's improvement.
@amymoreorless Bravo on your second marathon!! My second one was hot too and took me 5 h 28. Looking forward to your recap.
@kristinegift Awesome monthly mileage tally!
@RunsOnEspresso Woo hoo, 100K!!
@marisap2010 @ContraryMaryMary Yay for making your goals!
@quilteryoyo and @hanlonsk Nice consistency both of you!

Nominal January mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the January races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – January isn't even over, and winter has got me beat down mentally. More snow this morning. I drove over it to get to church, didn't get the driveway shoveled till about 2 PM. Totally wimped out on running in the afternoon with temperature at 23° F (-5° C) and 24 mph wind. Then I didn't want to run in the dark when the wind was a more reasonable 12-13 mph and the temperature down in the upper teens, because what driver is looking for an idiot out running in the dark in January when it's cold and windy even for January?
So I went to run on the indoor track. The nice fieldhouse track was occupied by a bunch of intramural soccer games, so it was of to the hard upper track. The sign says 8 laps to the mile. Coach says that track is just a little longer than 200m, go one pole on the inner rail short to run 200m. That works out to a little over a mile for 8 laps. *shrug* I don't know, I counted 8 laps as a mile for purposes of deciding how far to run.
The plan assignment today was 8 to 14 miles. I was thinking 8 to 12, ended up running 10 Garmin laps of 8 track laps each. Garmin estimated that as 10.46 miles by cadence, with the later laps being estimated as longer than the earlier laps. Close enough for tracking training mileage.
If I'd realized I was sitting at 189.xx miles for the month, I might have run 11 miles. Then again, 10 miles was physiologically a good place for me to stop today. I'll break 200 on Tuesday anyway.
In other news, the email confirming I've been accepted into the TCS New York City marathon came today. I was going to get in even if I had to pay Marathon Tours for a guaranteed entry, but I like the bragging rights of being able to say I got into New York as a time qualifier.
Rest day tomorrow. I may be adding races to my 2019 calendar, since the list of 2019 RROY races was released last night at the banquet. Just have to figure out which ones I definitely want to run, and which ones I want to decide about later.
2019 Races:
January 1, 2019 Freezeroo #2 (Resolution Run 7.5 mile) (Mendon, NY) finished in 50:55
January 5, 2019 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Gates, NY) finished in 1:30:48

@HonuNui I like them socks, they remind me of spy eyes! I love socks. I just don’t like wearing them. I’m always barefoot.
And @katharmonic @louubelle @martaindale @orphia, I wash my hair 1-2 times a day. But if I get two showers in a day, I’m likely just conditioning it the second time. I can do the hot water rinse thing, but eh... I started using gel and hair spray with this shorter cut. So I feel like I have to wash it out. Now if I don’t use it, I can do the rinse. But if I just skip a was or rinse, my head gets itchy and it drive me nuts. My hair is a bit bipolar, it’s straight on top and curly in the back so not washing the natural oils out makes it more manageable. But the top straight hair gets limp and annoying. My hair hates this hard water that we have. I could talk dh into a softener just for my hair... ok and the appliances.3 -

I had a great run today and hit my goal for January. I ran 11.4 miles. I went almost to the lake. I did get to a point where I could see the lake in the distance which was my goal for today. I'm planning to run all the way there soon, but I was only trying for 11 miles today. The weather was really nice today. It was a little chilly starting out in shorts and a t-shirt, but I warmed up after about 2 miles. It was around 49F when I started out, but it was around 55F when I was done and it was sunny. The run out to the lake was really nice. I took this picture when I got to about halfway through my run. I was actually standing next to the driveway of a friend of mine. That is pretty much the view from her back porch.
I just found out about a half marathon on Saturday in a town about an hour away. I am thinking about running it, but I'm still undecided. I don't think there are finisher medals and only the first 50 people even get t-shirts. I sent a message to the race director to get more info. I'm not only in it for the bling, but if I'm going to run a half marathon I kind of want a medal. Or at least a t-shirt. I can run 13.1 miles by myself for free and I don't have to get up at 4 in the morning and drive an hour to do it. I guess I'll see what kind of response I get. It would be kind of fun to run another HM. I'm still thinking about running the HM in May that I ran last year. But my son is going to be moving to Japan sometime this spring and I am not going to sign up for any races until I know when he will be leaving.
@amymoreorless Congrats on your 2nd marathon! Great job!
@RunsOnEspresso Great job on hitting 100 miles this month!
@Orphia Congrats on the HM and the 30km!
There was lots of good running this weekend!

6 miles tonight, on flat trail. I was hoping to run in a snow storm but it came later than initially forecast and I didn't want to wait any longer, so I head out and started around a quarter past 5. The temp was the same as yesterday, so I dressed the same, but failed to take into account stronger wind. I was a bit cold on the first half but that head wind turned into a tail wind and the last half was fine.
We finally did start getting snow for the last mile but by then it was dark and I didn't have a headlamp so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have otherwise.
I felt like I was running fast relatively to my other runs since starting back up but it turns out it was actually my slowest run. No big deal...I loved the run, I loved the trail, and I had a great time.
This run put me over 100 for the first time since March and I'll pass my goal on my next run.

Really been AOL-Slacker this month. Did get in 2 runs this weekend.
Saturday 10.2km - a beautiful +5C day with a SW wind - just about Shorts and T-shirt weather for us.
Sunday 5.2km -5C Yes a 10C ( 50F ) swing overnight so all the roads and trails had a beautiful coating of ice which made for lots of interesting traction hunting.
A quick look at my monthly runs and you see that I have had way to many long periods between runs all caused by work and being out of town for unplanned extended trips. On the positive side I now have 3 new shaving kits and some new clothes all courtesy of work - travel expenses. Hard to expense Running shoes and wicking gear

8 miles on trails - that makes my 60 mile stretch goal for January.
It was so pretty today! Over 50 F, bright sun, little wind. Everyone was out at the park, which wasn't too nice since half of them were vaping and you could smell it all over the park. My husband who is still coughing a little (slight cold) was having a terrible time breathing all the stinky air. Eeewww! It's amazing how far that stuff carries, we were way back in the woods on trails and you could still smell it from the picnic areas and playground.
We ran out at Shelby Farms where we have a 10k coming up, did the 1.5 mile grassy run at the beginning as a warmup, walked a shortcut back to the start, then ran the whole course. Gradually this course is kicking our *kitten* less and less, but it's still hard. Sort of hoping that running 8 miles will make 10k feel a little easier. Hardly anyone runs back in the unpaved trails, but we did encounter one guy we recognized from our race series who was doing the exact same thing we were, practicing the course. He was way faster (and younger) and passed us going in and then coming out. I also ran into my AG leader in the restroom! And saw another woman I recognized from our series running trails with her husband. I guess everyone had the same idea today.
Re: Sally challenge - I can't even begin to do the push-up one but I did the squats one a while ago. It's fun! For some reason I decided last strength day that regular push-ups weren't hard enough and tried doing push-ups to rows, holding dumbbells. My dumbbells are not square, which adds a whole other dimension to the push-ups since they try to roll sideways. I can do about three before I wobble and fall over laughing. It's definitely something I am going to keep working at. Being able to do real honest toe push-ups is still a fairly new concept for me.9 -
Ok I'll play along. I'm actually just stalling at getting out the door to run in the cold. These socks were part of a race packet... except there was a problem with the supplier and everyone got a size smaller than they ordered. They're a little tight, but okay. I've been wearing them a lot in the cold.9

@amymoreorless Congratulations on your marathon finish!!
Re: push-ups / pull-ups challenge. I should probably do both. Because I fail at both! Every now and then I decide I want to learn how to do proper push-ups (I can do 5-10 knee or incline ones) or pull-ups (I can do 0), but I always get discouraged rather quickly, after two weeks or so of no progress
Re: hair. There's no way I would be washing my hair with shampoo twice per day! More like three times per week. The rest of the time I just rinse it with water. I'm pretty relaxed about hair styling too. I never use a hair drier, I simply do not have the patience to spend 10 minutes each day on that since my hair will just as well dry on its own. So just go to work with wet hair
Re: running. Didn't run nearly as much last week as I had planned. I was trying to hold a cold at bay. I think I managed, no stuffy nose or headaches at all, just sore throat and cough for ~5 days, but even that is over now, I think. But it means I only went outside for two runs and one day of skiing, and did indoor sports the rest of the time.
So until now I'm just at 113km for January. I think my goal was 170km...8
