So far, I'm really behind on my distance this month! I skipped about 10km to baby my knee during the week, then I skipped another 15km to go skiing on the weekend. Tonight I'm going climbing right after work, but I should really make sure to go running afterwards, no matter how late I come home... It's so frustrating that it's beautiful sunshine outside right now, but when I get home from work it's still already dark. I prefer winter temperatures over summer temperatures for running, but a bit of daylight now and then would also be welcome!
@_nikkiwolf_ I do almost all my runs in the dark currently(@ 0430-0500 starts usually) and am eagerly anticipating the longer days with earlier sunrises too!

I must be odd (a collective "duh" rings out) but I love running in the dark, be it on trails or pavement. I don't dislike running in the daylight, but there's a certain primal feeling I get running in the dark, particularly on trails, in the woods, particularly in the rain. When I get to my long runs before my next big race I'm considering doing them on Friday nights after dark rather than Saturday mornings.13

January Total: 100k
January Goal: 100k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen.
As I suspected, didn't finish the run in time to edit my previous post. Some of the route was packed snow, which was fine. But a lot of it was loose snow on top of packed snow, which was like slippery sand. One of the drawbacks of a grey beard is that it camouflages the ice pretty well. Made goal for the month, but it was a pretty low goal out of fear for the weather.5 -
@_nikkiwolf_ that top is the one I'm currently in love with and omgoodness I hadn't seen those leggings with POCKETS. Now I'm going to have to pay Decathlon a visit tomorrow (30 minutes cross-training sounds like it will be a walk to the store and back lol).
I usually run very early in the mornings before the sun is up, but stick to well-lit streets. Once I ran down a street with no lights on and that scared the *kitten* outta me, not being able to see where I was putting me feet was terrifying. Guess that's what lamps are for, huh?

January goal: 75 miles
1/1: 3.11 miles
1/4: 4.6 miles
1/5: 4.21 miles
1/6: 8.02 miles
1/8: 3.11 miles
1/9: 3.15 miles
1/10: 3.15 miles
1/13: 9.01 miles

1/17: 5.03 miles
1/20: 10.02 miles
1/22: 5.02 miles
64.69/75 miles completed
I ran 5.02 miles this morning. I really thought I would just have to embrace the suck on this run because it is so windy and I don't really like running in wind, but it was actually a great run. The moon looked so awesome with the clouds sailing past it, and I just felt really good. I knew it would be windy so I just tried to relax and not worry about my pace. I expected to be slow, but ended up having a decent pace. I debated running at lunch, but this is the only morning this week it is supposed to be in the upper 50's and it is going to be windy all day so I wanted to run before work and get 5 miles in instead of at lunch and only get 3. It is supposed to be around 34F in the morning tomorrow and Thursday so I'll probably run at lunch the next 2 days.

I think there must have been a mistranslation somewhere, that same shirt reads "up to 15 degrees C" on the Chinese website. Which is also a load of crap, as I don't fish it out until it gets well into the single digits. Maybe their product testers put them on and then hang around chatting outdoors (for which it is totally comfortable at 15C).
I had correctly assumed it was a typo for °F. 15° C = 59° F, so the math works out. It looks to be about the same weight as the long sleeve tech shirts I get for races here. So . . . either French runners run much colder than upstate NY runners, or the company is primarily marketing to non-runners who think they want to run and still think 59°F/15°C is cool. For me, it's borderline between short sleeve tee and singlet with no great negative consequence one way or the other.
59 in that grey range between T-shirt and Long Sleeve where depends on sun/etc. Definitely not second layer pull over range
I might try the shirt Joey suggested linked when I get some cash. Still a bit undecided. The price is good, so maybe. Seems lots of people on this thread like their stuff so that helps.
But definitely get the feeling their "running expert" does not run or only runs in warmer climates based on the numbers

_nikkiwolf_ wrote: »@PastorVincent I have some great running clothes from Decathlon. Nearly all of my running stuff, in fact.
(I ordered UA pants twice, but was really disappointed the second time because the new ones where much shorter than the old version...) I especially appreciate that their running tights have POCKETS. Not just one single stupid tiny key thing at the back, but actual pockets where I can put things in. This one is my favourite. For running when it's cold (usually between -5C to 0C) I use a combination of this shirt with this vest. Of course, one advantage I have compared to you is that I don't have to put up with bad translations
The French site looks much more respectable too! Almost like a professional made that site, and his kid made the USA one.3 -
I'm thinking of signing up for the Hogeye Marathon in Springdale, AR (4/6/19). Does anyone here know if they have bacon on the course? It seems like they should have it either on the course or at the end (as a minimum). Has anyone done this race and do you know? If not, I might message the RD. I'm really thinking about signing up and that might push me over the edge...8

BACON would definitely be a deciding factor for me....still thinking about @mbaker566 belgian waffle with bacon pic from the other day....YUMMY!🥓5 -

26/60km goal
It warmed up to about -20C, and I grabbed 6 km. Usually I do 5 km and the mental hurdle of one more seems higher than is strictly necessary. I love running outside, despite the weather, so much more interesting. I am a little sad to not be skating, but I set a running goal, so I aim to please.
p.s. I pulled the muff thing down once I warmed up
p.p.s. ski goggles are better in this weather but I don't have those
32/60km goal

That reminds me, I have a pork belly in my freezer. I need to thaw it out, cure it and smoke it so I haven't it in time for my long runs and races. Home cured & smoked bacon on the trail is nirvana.
@almostsuperpowered those roads look perfect for running. Nice job getting out there! I may be wearing my ski goggles later this week if the forecast holds. I haven't worn them yet for running but I'm looking forward to when I need them. Before I had them, if I was running in bitter cold during the day I discovered I could pull my buff completely over my face and still see well enough through to safely run. It did an amazing job to cut the wind. I'm sure I looked (more) like a dork though.

it is super dorky but also good for ensuring you don't get frostbite on your face parts
And yes you DO need to get that pork belly out. greatest belly of all.4 -
rheddmobile wrote: »@PastorVincent hmm.. 59f is still tank/no shirt running weather here. Maybe its a cold 59 in Fronce 😆 eh, i like the look of the gear. Seems to be half the price-ish. I have a really nice warm nike shirt with thumb holes and a hood, i think it was 60-80$. So 30-40 is alright.
I bought some cheaper running shirts when someone left staples/tacks in thier pockets and they happened to shred my good running shirts in the dryer They are Fila. They are heavy, hot, seams pull...i never wear them. Eh. But the group appears to think the decathlon brand is worth a go.
I also have some fila fleece lined running tights that are nice. Were cheep. Like 12$. Definitely worth it.
Let us know what you think of the product. I may spring for some just based on @noblsheep 's approval.
I agree with you about Fila - bad shirts, great cheap tights. Are they a Kohls brand? I don't think I've seen them except at Kohls.
I did find the shirts at kohls. Not sure on the tights, i found them online.3 -
Thanks, i think it was @7lenny7, for the comment about the difference of drinking the electrolytes during running vs just to drink. I decided to take another chance with the NUUN watermelon electrolyte this morning, and what a difference a run makes! Much more able to tolerate it. I ordered the Tailwind on Saturday, it shipped the same day, and was sitting in my mailbox today after my podiatrist appt!
Tarsal tunnel update: still painful, another cortisone shot today, script for Gabapentin (start that on either Sat or Fri) and he is ordering a topical cream to work in before & after a run. Hopefully that can knock it down. Still no restriction on running, we even talked about Gasparilla, running & distances, how to get started, etc so it's not like I'm hiding I from him! lol (he is an active guy, plays tennis, etc, just wants to start running to build up his leg muscles)

No idea about other countries but here at least, in line with their low-cost thing I guess, they only seem to employ youngsters who I assume are studying or whatever. Cheap, not particularly well-qualified or experienced, kind of thing. So probably just about any of us in this group, even us relative newbie runners, probably know more than their "running experts". (I actually applied for a part-time job with them and they didn't even bother replying, guess I'm at least 20 years too old for them lol).

Today was a big ol' fail run-wise! I drove half an hour to a trail I wanted to check out only to get 1/5 of a mile in and discover one of the first boardwalks was impassable. It was a really long one and it was totally broken with an expanse of ice between the two not broken segments. Sadly I hadn't thought to bring ice skates with me, so I turned right around and drove back home. Ended up doing 5 miles back and forth on paved recreation trails (which are mercifully un-icy) near my house, but I rushed it because I'm expecting a call about a job interview at some unspecified time today. I didn't particularly want to answer mid-run, but alas, no call yet
Hoping for some warmer temperatures and a less chaotic run tomorrow!

Today should be a nice day for a run, currently -2C. But the weather the rest of the week is really weird! I run Tues/Thurs/Sat right now so it works out for me but still. Look at that swing!

Day two point five of being sick and I think I'll be up for getting back to my normal routine tomorrow, if I take it easy. So, you know, up at 6 to walk the dog, do my best to bill eight hours with a mid-day break for strength class followed by a 15-20 minute run home (should be sunny around 20, fingers crossed), then heading to St. Paul for a fundraiser with my husband at the home of one of the named partners of my law firm. NO BIG DEAL! And I am genuinely looking forward to all of this and hoping my energy levels keep coming back. Okay, maybe not the fund raiser all that much, but it'll be good for us to go - my husband does political work and got me my job through his connection with said named partner, who personally invited us to this event so we really do need to go.
Anyhow, I posted on Facebook how bummed I was that I missed running in the snow this afternoon, which is really bonkers but also totally true. I'm trying to be good and rest, though. Generally I find aggressive rest early in to be the best way to kill a cold quickly. This has been a weird one - around Sunday mid-day it felt like all of my energy had been sucked out of me and my brain was a big pot of three-day-old mush most of yesterday. The brain weasels were out in force yesterday, though of course when my husband asked what they'd been saying, I couldn't really identify anything specific. Just general "you stink you lazy stinker and your life stinks" messages. All pretty clearly untrue.
I haven't been sick much the last couple of years so I have no idea if I'm actually on the upswing or not - it feels like I'm getting off pretty easy here since I haven't had any congestion or such, just tired and achy and brain fog. I guess if nothing else I can count this as a taper before the race on Saturday? I've certainly been carbo-loading - I can't eat at a deficit when I'm sick. Or, to be precise, I find it very difficult and generally choose not to bother.11 -
