Today's high was 31 but it's now a chilly 20. Celcius. 31 Celcius ... 20 Celcius.
This is part of the reason why I moved from Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan & Manitoba) to Australia.
No storms here ... just fires and lots of smoke.
M in Oz2 -
Hi all. Can't see the moon here. It is a beautiful night though even if it is cold. Those in the storms and cold please stay safe.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA3 -
DH dosed himself up with Benalyn last night at my suggestion and did get some sleep. That cheered him up a bit. He is still weak and coughing, but better than yesterday. I'm crossing fingers.
NYKAREN I've been meaning to tell you about the Soul Music BBC 4 podcast I listened to for the 2nd time on my run the other day when I took the photo. It was about Allegri's Miserere. It features the 12 year old boy who sang in the original recording. Truly extraordinary.
I'm sure you can find it and download it through Google. Or there is a BBC Sounds app.
I also listened to Swan Lake on that run. Those podcasts are so good. I know Rori listened to Handel's Messiah which was about Alzheimers.
Well, we will see what the day brings. Hard frost last night.

Haven't accomplished much in the past 3 days and slipped a little in daily goals. Needed a quick 1000 steps... https://www.youtube.com/embed/EqIpkMDRjYw?list=PL-lxnbdeufTZz71yY1xiAK87bhUh_sl3F got me back on track.
Karen in VA, Scooter's tail is high and that is some good $#!+... to quote Cheech and Chong.
Heather could your DH have pneumonia? There are more types than the vaccine prevents. Would you share a pic of the chrome Art Deco lamp? Had to smile at the halfway points of your run, I imagine they can be quite motivating
Katla we can't hear the fog horns from home, but can when we go down to the port(s). I love the sound of trains going past in the night, rocking me back to sleep. Something about having had my first birthday on a train from SF to St. Louis Thanks for reminding me of Peter Rabbit, whey I was barely able to vocalize, "A-bert" was my favorite.
Vickie Loved reading about your motorcycle group and your sharing sobriety story with the new young man. Brava!
Margaret there is a special circle in hell for spammers
Barbie "eating the cardboard box" Thanks for the cauliflower crust pizza review. Waiting 'til he freezer purge frees up more space before I'll buy.
SueBDew 19 days, inspiring!
Machka "My best friend is my husband ... that's partly why this past year has been so difficult..." brought a tear. Hard to find time to grieve amidst the intenst care giving demands. "chilly 20 Celcius" :laugh" It ranges from 4-15C here, not bad for January, and why we moved here from Boise Idaho
Michele would you share your chocolate bran muffin recipe? I need to incorporate more oat bran and that sounds like something I'd eat
Karen in BC Hang in there. We are here throwing you a life line. Grab and we'll help pull!
Kate in UK do you have Zicam in the UK? It's really helped me minimize cold duration and severity... don't know if it would work for flu tho'
Lisa it stinks to be sick over a holiday weekend, but glad your boys built you a fire. Very therapeutic.
Okie smart lightbulbs and Siri? You ROCK galfriend!
Lanette " peel with the potato peeler, then halve lengthwise, remove the seeds, then cut into 1" strips. Put on non-stick cookie sheet, dust with cinnamon, and roast at 400 for perhaps 20 minutes." you make the Delicata squash sound appealing... almost :heart" Charlie Brown and Snoopy.
KJ What a blessing you are!
NYKaren could I make yoghurt with goats milk? Have a local source...
Rita your pics make me laugh but your new DR who is all into healthy eating makes me smile BIG!
Viv I'm right there with you about Christmas Cake though in my case its a rum soaked fruitcake. Fortunately there's only one small 2 oz piece left...
Kay  Men!
Yvonne "jewel tones" are my favorite. Really disklike the eras of earth tones, they always looked dirty to me. Hope Red Molly recovers quickly.
Sue in WA we missed the lunar eclipse too.

Aloha! Holy cow! -8* this morning! Only supposed to get up to 10* today. Over 100 schools are cancelled in the West Michigan area. I don't see any of the lakeside school districts closing. We are a tougher breed out here with the constant wind, I think.
Kay- Love your story about your DH. Mine is like that, too. Can be exasperating! (trying the D emojis)
Cari- I like the "thoughtful" questions. Let's see: Who would I send a thank you note to? Maybe Randall Wallace (the writer of Braveheart). His movie drove me to the library to look up the life of William Wallace; and there I found that he was painted quite differently depending on the author of the book. One author wrote of Wallace as a villain and another wrote of him as a hero. This was my "lightbulb" moment in regards to history mostly being based on perspective. Who is a good friend to me?- I have many good friends, but as for a friend that I can tell anything to, I don't have one of those. Not even my husband or daughter. I feel safest telling you ladies these things, but there is still stuff I have told no one, mainly because it has no bearing on them. What small thing did you do, lately, that made some one happy?- Well, I recently participated in a facebook challenge where the first five-ten people to respond to a post, I have to do something or send them something to make them feel loved/special. I chose my cousin first. I remembered that she recently posted her bucket list that she has been working on. So I took a look at it, and contacted an organization that she wanted to work with (taking portraits of children who are battling cancer) and I contacted them and got them in the loop. I sent her a note letting her know that I contacted them and that they were waiting for her to call or email so they can view her work and set up a time she can do some photography work. What is the biggest surprise you have ever had?- the impact of a life. The impact of losing my parents was surprising and the impact of becoming a grandmother. Two things that people tell you are huge, but you just don't understand how deep it goes until it happens to you. What color do you like to wear most? I love colors, but the one I am most drawn to is a lovely red orange coral color. I don't wear it often though. I tend to wear blues and black quite a bit. BUT I LOVE THAT CORAL!
Well, kids arriving and gotta get our luau underway! Aloha! xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -
Heather thanks for the recommendation for music to listen to
Barbara I’ve never made yogurt with goat milk but have seen recipes for it, the one recipe I saw used gelatin to help it set, though. I don’t know if that is something you use —I’ve never used gelatin successfully myself
Super cold inside day today. Will get lots done—that’s the plan and I’m sticking to it
NYKAREN3 -
NYKAREN - It's not the music, which I know you know already, but the Soul Music podcasts which talk about what the track means to individual people. Often it makes me 'pipe my eye'. The Allegri I found astonishing to hear the 'boy' who had been at rugby practice just before. He really does sound like an angel!

Good morning Ladies!
I am about to venture out into the wild. I haven't left the house since Friday. Actually that's not true, I went out on the back porch to put the gas grill back where it belongs after the wind storm finished on Saturday evening (pic of where it ended up in spoiler). How it got around a corner without going down the two steps to the lower patio I have no idea but I thank God that it did. And yesterday I went to the driveway and got the newspaper.
I'm going to pick up my reflux meds. I figured since I had a refill of them, I should keep them on hand for when I have a flare. It seems that I am much more sensitive to a flare when I am eating very low calorie back in loss mode. When I ate anything I wanted over the indulgence months between my birthday and New Year's, I had no issues. Maybe my stomach acid is more sensitive with less food volume in it?? It kind of makes sense in my brain, but I don't know if there is any science behind it. Maybe the IF played in too, with no food for my stomach acid to work on for so many hours, maybe it worked on itself when it encountered any irritation (the diet coke double whammy - caffeine and carbonated). Any advice from my wise friends? While I am out I will also swing by and pick up some salted caramel yogurt, my fave. I so hope they have some, they have been out the last two times I have checked.
Have a great Monday Ladies -

Healing thoughts to all who are ailing in body or spirit!
Kay ~ That was so funny about your husband and the steps tracker. My DH is very adamant about learning new things. We have new house phones and he refuses to learn how to use the directory menu to make calls.
Kim ~ Sounds like you had a very interesting lunch. We went to a Japanese restaurant last night to celebrate DnL's birthday. I must say that the fiery grill displays do not appeal to me. By the time time the chef finished cooking a lot of the choices of meat most of us in the party had finished.

Went for my run. It was very cold, but sunny. Sea flat. Lots of people out jogging and walking.
I rang my cancer friend and we had a quick chat because she was just heating up some soup. She said she would get back to me, but she hasn't done so yet. She sounded ok.
DH is asleep on the sofa, sitting up. He managed a shave and a shower this morning! Progress! But the antibiotics have made his skin very sensitive and almost painful. He finishes the course tomorrow morning, so I have just given him Paracetamol.
Going to cook the lamb stew I delayed yesterday. I love knowing I can eat.
I've paid for the term of contemporary dance lessons today. Hope I'll be able to go to most of them. Not cheap.
DH won't be able to go to the Swing classes tomorrow, but I might go on my own. We all dance with each other, but it will make a man short.
I bit on the Christmas cake icing just now and took a chunk out of a tooth. It's probably just a bit of filling. I'm going for a much delayed check up on Wednesday, so we'll see about it then. Annoying.

Good morning group!
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with hormones/thryoid affecting their weight loss due to age. I'm almost 50, have worked out and tracked food since August 2018, without losing one pound.
For reference, I do 3 days a week cardio (Orange Theory, spin or boxing), 1 day a week less intense (online Yoga with Adriene or long walk) and 1 day a week restorative yoga. I also (try) to meditate daily. I keep moving down my calorie intake - started at 1800 a day, went to 1700, and just recently dropped to 1650 a day. My periods have been infrequent over the last two years, and have stopped since the summer.
I feel like there's more to it, than meets the eye. I weight everything and have an Apple watch that tracks everything. I don't eat my calories back.
Perspective and stories from the 50+ set would be very welcomed!
Enjoy this lovely day,
Trish

Morning, all,
Day 4 of fairly nasty cold, and it's progressing as they usually do... I'm now at the "my eyeballs are itching inside my head" stage, and my lungs are starting to feel punky. Just crossing fingers that it won't progress to a sinus or a bronchial infection. Since I quit smoking, they seldom do, but the cough does seem to hang on forever. My whole world has that medicine smell of mentholatum and tissues.
But, I was able to get my brains together to get three grants progressed to where they need to be, and my week sorted out to where I can be everywhere I need to be. As it's a holiday, I was able to get six solid hours of work done with no distractions, and now I'm going to toddle off for a well-deserved nap.
Love y'all,

Got up with a sore throat and feeling blah. Extremely windy here today and ‘not allowed’ to cook inside so took over an hour to cook a simple cauliflower hash brown recipe for easy breakfasts. Cook ahead then nuke a serving for breakfast. Simply not a good day.
Recipe:
16 oz cauliflower ( I buy the ore chopped bags), 4 eggs, small onion, salt and pepper to taste. Fry patties in butter until golden brown. Great lchf recipe!
This is how mine looked with the wind interference.

A very productive morning, I tricked myself into doing tasks I’ve been putting off. I planted myself at my DD’s desk and just puttered away, getting up and walking after each little task was accomplished.
Clothes and food are ready for the work week and will hit the gym tomorrow to start the work week off well.

That looks really good, Rita. Why aren't you "allowed" to cook inside? It sounds a little like my prohibition on pooping inside. Lol Just don't. I don't care if we do have a toilet. Just, No.

Heather: I’m so sorry your DH is not feeling good. Can he take a cough suppressant? If it is effective, he might be able to get some rest. We use an old-fashioned vaporizer (humidifier) when the congestion is bad. The added humidity can be soothing and often reduces the coughing for us. Sending good thoughts for ways to help him rest so his body can fight off the illness.
Kay: You WIN!!!!! So does your DH because he is moving more and feeling better.
Rita: Why can’t you cook inside? Aromatic foods with smells you’d rather keep outside?
I had a lovely yoga class this morning and am feeling better than I have in a week or more. I’ve been tired with no obvious reason. When that happens I am often in the coming down stages of a virus. I’m hoping to avoid any virus that may be floating in the air. DH is at a low ebb the past couple of days, too. It is just past noon and he’s taking a nap.
It is damp and a bit chilly today, but I’m thanking my stars that we aren’t having ice and snow.

Have you cut back on refined grains, pasta, breads, sugar? These foods are known to up insulin. The insulin makes you hungrier and adds on the pounds. If your cortisol levels are high like me your weight will settle on your waist and upper back. Mine got so bad I had a break out of rosacea. It is just now starting to clear. As we get older our hormones change and finding the diet that works with these changes is a process.
If not interested in history skip:
This is a thumb nail summary. The book goes into much more detail than I can give it here.
I am currently reading a book Good Calories Bad Calories on how the low fat craze got started. It turns out they could measure cholesterol back in the 1930's . The attributed high cholesterol with heart disease. They got in in their bonnets that a high fat diet increased cholesterol and made heart disease worse. Weight was a secondary issue. In the 60's they were able to better access triglycerides. It turns out the triglycerides increase with a high sugar diet as does insulin. They discovered a better predictor of heart disease was the ratio of triglycerides to you HDL. Ideal is 2. Anything under 3.5 is okay. By the time this marker was accepted the food companies were already of the low fat band wagon. To make there food more edible you guessed it they added more sugar.
I try to remind myself that the food companies are going to produce things that we want rather than what we need because it is profit that drives them. Remembering this helps me to think more carefully what foods I eat and why.

Hi Trish....welcome to MFP and my world! The same thing happened to me at 50 early onset menopause at 42 and thyroid at 50...atleast you are exercising which I wasn't but no matter what I tried nothing happened..I would have been happy with a lb just so I knew I was doing something right. So I know exactly what your going through...it's so frustrating!!! I am now 68 am trying my last ditch effort and my daughter told me about My Fitness Pal and finally since I started logging my food intake on MFP as of Oct. 28th I have lost 13 lbs and am losing a lb every 10 days. I keep to low carb at around 85 gms per day and 1400 calories and portion control EVERYTHING and log my food and I mean EVERYTHING religiously. I do believe this is what is working this time. I can't exercise like you as I use a walker (back issues) which is one of the reasons I've tried to lose weight. Read up on the low carb and the logging and maybe give it a try.....what have you got to lose (no pun intended). LOL from sub zero cold Ontario Mary Brrrrrr5 -

Welcome, Trish.
I hear your frustration and second it. I don't know your height, but I am short -- 5'3. And to maintain at my current weight, I can only eat about 1500 a day. 1200 a day, the lowest recommended here, doesn't even give me a 1 pound a week loss. The margins are very slim. An extra 100 calories a day over my maintenance will result in nearly a one pound gain per month. That was very startling to me, when I figured that out. Because that is basically one extra apple a day.

Good afternoon.
Hubby is currently winging his way to you in the northeast with your arctic temperatures. He was definitely not looking forward to that.
We went to bed early last night, because he had to leave early this morning, so we missed the lunar eclipse. The pictures I've seen were very beautiful.
I've been sick for the past few days -- my own fault. I purposefully ate a couple bites of non gluten-free chocolate cake because sometimes I'm just sick of not eating gluten and tasty treats, and it looked so good, and what damage could two small bites make. My 12 year old was so angry with me. "Mother!! Two bites!!! You might as well have eaten a whole piece!" Maybe he's right. I couldn't be any sicker, right???
I'm still functioning, but making many runs (pun intended) to the ladies room down the hall, and the abdominal cramps are horrible. I never did tell my husband, and I swore my son to secrecy because "I don't want daddy to scold me." "He SHOULD scold you. That was very stupid, Mother." Me: "I don't need him to scold me because you are already doing such a good job!" He shut up after that, just shaking his head disappointingly.
Even with it all, I managed to get him to his VEX robotic tournament on Saturday (at my high school), and while he was VEXing, I had coffee with my ex sister in law for 2.5 hours, took my son lunch and watched his robot compete, then had a 2.5 hour lunch with one of my oldest best friends -- we've known each other since kindergarten. Then we drove by my childhood home because my son wanted to check on the tree. (picture posted below in spoiler)
My mother planted that Sequoia as a seedling, over 50 years ago, and it was 3-4 inches high. It is crazy.
Wishing everyone a thoughtful MLK Day.

It is cold and stunningly beautiful today! Went to work with my dash thermometer reading -5 degrees. Only got up to +5 degrees and expected to drop back tonight to -2 degrees. But the sun is shining and with 18" of snow and wild drifts it is gorgeous. Supposed to be 41 degrees with rain on Wednesday ... sheesh.
All is well here at the moment and I am so thankful for that.
Eating a bit too much today, but within my window. Will rein it in shortly.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
"Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflect on our soul when we look the other way." (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) Long ago my mom and I were talking about Dr. King and she said she thought he was a "troublemaker." But I believe that without troublemakers in this world, many things that we now recognize as morally wrong would still be the norm in our society. Troublemakers recognize things that need to change and call us out for our inaction.
Allie - Do be careful if you have to go out on those icy roads and/or sidewalks!
Sue - We had a cold, clear night last night so Philip and I were able to stand on the front lawn and look at the lunar eclipse. Beautiful, but we didn't stay out there very long!
Barbara - We have train sounds here too, and I love them. There's an historic hotel we visit in Bryan that is located right on the railroad tracks, and they actually have to warn people about train noise and offer them earplugs because they've had complaints. I'll take the rumble of the train over people thumping around in the hall any day.
Rita - Yum, love the idea of cauliflower hash! I adore mashed cauliflower and often make it in place of mashed potatoes, especially when cooking for my sister-in-law who has to limit carbs. I have not really delved into cooking much in the RV, but that should be do-able for us. In fact, I realize I could chop up the cauliflower in advance or even splurge on the pre-chopped kind.
My replacement cell phone arrived this morning so I've been futzing around with getting it set up and learning the differences from my old one. I do wish it wasn't necessary to re-learn everything, but I guess I can't realistically expect technology to stand still. At least I'm connected again!
