Morning, all,
In writing mode this morning, so I thought I'd stop by. Am going to spend the first few hours this morning (inspired by y'all) updating the "Big Book o' Death," which has all the information for all the insurances, passwords, etc., in it, as well as the obituary I wrote for myself some years back. There are always risks any time you go under anesthesia, and I'm respecting that by making sure my family's OK if something happens. I'm the one who's the record-keeper and in charge of the finances (with consultation, of course).
One of the reasons I'm taking all this so seriously is that I will be under general anesthesia as well as a spinal block, and they'll be using an injectable local anesthetic during the surgery that has a 72-hour absorption. I'm not allergic to anything, to my knowledge, but have never had a spinal block, so it's a big unknown. Not looking forward to THAT needle. Am SO looking forward to eventually being out of pain... It's been so long that I'm not even sure how that will feel.
Unfortunately, as it's my right knee, which I need for driving, I may also be stuck at home for a fairly significant time. So glad I can work remotely! At this point, I plan to be working by the Monday after surgery, but that means I'm off for at least four days, so I've got a fair amount to do this week to prepare. Been watching videos of the surgery, and reading all kinds of information on prep work and after work needed for quickest recovery.
Off to get all the records in good shape...
Love y'all,

Yeah, I've got to move into high gear with all that this coming week.

Lisa love your approach to prepping for surgery—knowledge is power and then you let it all go. All good thoughts and strength coming your way.
DH and I are also updating big book of death and helping his mom with her renters—.this will be tricky as MIL is a softee and DH is all business, but renters are taking advantage of her generous kind nature.
Barbara my heart broke as you told the story of the young student saying “it wasn’t my turn to eat”. Just broke me.
Off to exercise and prep for a successful, healthy week ahead.

Long day ...
We drove the 300 km route for a cycling event we'll be hosting in March. It's a nice route and the drive went reasonably well ... me driving, husband navigating. But it was the last long ride we did before his accident so there was some emotion about that. Plus navigating is fatiguing. We had to take a couple breaks.
Nevertheless we did check the whole route, and there are a few places where I'll need to make adjustments to the map and cue sheet.
Then we watched the video of my grandmother's memorial service. It was lovely ... but of course emotional.

Went out to see the sea. Managed to walk for around 45 minutes. It threatened to rain, but mostly held off. The surf was up, so it was very lovely. Both of us found it very tiring, but DH more than me, even though my head cold is worse today. He was falling behind at the end. I'm glad we made the effort.
I've cancelled tomorrow's lunch with my girlfriend. Apart from feeling rubbish, so I wouldn't be good company, I really don't want to give her the virus. Last year I gave her my horrible cough and she had it for months. I haven’t heard back from her yet. This is the same friend who is hosting the York party.
DH is very resistant to talking about death. He really doesn't want to do LPA. I will have to grasp the nettle at some point. He has about ten different savings accounts and we have hardly any joint money. If I had to pay for a nursing home because he was incapacitated I would not have access to his money. I really must do it.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Heather - I don't blame you for being troubled about your DH not wanting to get an LPA set up. Is it that he doesn't want to think about nursing homes/dying or he's conflicted about letting someone else have access to his money if he's unable to deal with it? If he does have medical problems that send him to a nursing home and he's not capable of paying that bill, and you don't have access, what happens? Would they come after your house to pay the bills?
Our attorney kind of joked that if one of us has a long-term illness with years of expensive nursing home care coming up, get a divorce early on to protect assets for the survivor. I don't think it's quite that bad. Thankfully there are options now for at-home care which are much more affordable, when the only alternative used to be a nursing home.
My DH never wanted to think about it or talk about until he spent 3 days in the hospital with diverticulitis and then was facing colon surgery a few months after that. I told him now was as good a time as any to get our wills done and the financial & medical power of attorney set up and he agreed. So I made the attorney appointment and ran him in there before he had a chance to change his mind.

Good morning everyone.....it's been quite a while since I posted on this group...but have been trying to keep up with all. January did not start out well......my husband lost his uncle on Jan. 1st and although he was ill and Doctors were on a day to day vigil...none the less he was the last of our parents generation and now we are "the old generation" to our kids, neices and nephews. Then a few days later we lost our cat "Kitty" she was 19 years old to old age. I have seen her go downhill in the last month and was worried about her as we are leaving for Myrtle Beach on Jan. 31st so sadly I am glad she went on her terms, and I was with her right to the end. We live in the great lakes area and it has been so cold since the new year and we had our 1st snow storm last week but it's the coldness that is so nasty that we are looking forward to spending Feb. in Myrtle Beach. Having to use a walker since July, this is my 1st winter with it and it's helping that I can walk with no pain in my back but with snow, ice etc. it sure makes you more housebound so going away will atleast make me more active. It's been day 79 since I started my loss journey and I am quite proud of my efforts, have lost 13 lbs to date, still logging everything and the lbs are staying off...slow but steady and even survived the holidays. There's another group I talk with of ladies over 60 and they have been very helpful with ideas for foods that are low carb so I have quite the arsonal now to keep it interesting so it doesn't feel like I'm "dieting" but getting used to eating the way I should. The good thing is it's become a habit to log everything I put in my mouth and portion out all the food. The other aspect I am finding is I don't beat myself up when I fall off...did it...get over it...continue the next day. So reading everyone's posts, logging, portioning I think this time I can do it. Like one poster told me 13 lbs ...that's a bag of potatoes you are not carrying!!! A little worried as we are leaving this coming Thursday (we are driving) and its supposed to be bitterly cold still and some snow...hoping that once we get past the Buffalo, Erie areas it will be OK. We are travelling with our little dog "Peanut" a shitshu pug mix and she is a perfect travelling dog but likes her grass for the perfect spot to do her business....so she will be happy soon. LOL I would post a picture of her but sadly not that computer savvy. I am determined that although not at home to continue with my logging and careful eating while away...this will be my first test. Wishing those with problems a good outcome and those doing well with their programs continued success and will post again from Myrtle Beach. Mary from cold....brrrr.... Ontario, Canada5

Heather: Sorry that your cold is worse. Feel better soon! :flowerforyou:
Lanette: We have never been big sweets eaters. DH has been diabetic since before we met, and we’ve been married a very long time. Many of the sugar alternatives that he was told to use back in the day are not healthy. I’m thinking of sorbital and manitol. Both have down sides. Stevia is a good alternative for sweetening coffee. We don’t’ substitute anything for sugar in our baking, but we seldom bake sweets. Since he’s been put on a wheat free diet, we’ve learned some interesting alternatives and are enjoying the occasional treat made with wheat free flours. My personal weakness is ice cream. I don’t buy it in cartons anymore because I eat too much of it if I have a carton in the house. I can get one serving at a local gift shop and I do that once in a while. :flowerforyou:
Machka: I am delighted to hear that you’re writing about your husband’s story. It will be healing for you both and might help others as well. WTG!
(((Michele))): I’m happy for your decision to step back a bit from the newcomer’s group. They have not been bringing you happiness for quite a while. :noway: I googled “nautical ornaments and party favors” There are quite a few things to look at there. Good luck!
Lisa: Good luck with your surgery. I am in awe of your forward thinking and “Big Book of Death.”
We need to complete a will, and you are all giving me a push in the right direction. It is hard to find the right attorney. My cousin was a brilliant attorney, but had a major health problem and closed his law practice. To my understanding, he's sequestered himself in his home and rarely sees visitors. I have one or two local attorneys in mind and we need to contact one of them. It is past time to take care of this. We have been procrastinating. Our 49th wedding anniversary will be this March. Next year is the big five-oh, and we want to revisit the site where we were married. Hopefully the kids will join us there for a celebration.

About having a will. Even having an imperfect one is better than having none. Also, finding an attorney has to come after figuring out what you want to put in the will. So while you're looking for an attorney (we asked a friend for a suggestion), we started listing our assets and family members and important charities so we'd be prepared to speak to the attorney. She did the legal part, but we had to know what we wanted to say.
About the Big Book of Death. We have had one for years and have updated it yearly. I added a few things based on what some of you have suggested. This month when I started working on the income tax, Jake mentioned that I have to stay with him forever because he had no idea how to do the income tax. Thus, as I stared doing it, I made notes of what I did and where I got the information. We have an accountant who fills out the forms and files for us, but we have to know what documents and numbers to send to her. I will type up the notes and put them where they can be found easily.
My friend emailed me today to say that she'd be taking hats to be given to homeless and needy people and I was delighted to find that I had six hats to contribute. All that riding the exercise bike while watching TV and knitting is paying off.
Mary in Ontario, You have crossed the hardest hurdle which is getting over the idea that you can't lose weight because of external circumstances. You have put a lot of great suggestions to work in your life. I hope you will continue posting and sharing how you are doing.

Hi Everyone!
I have been reading but just now caught up. Things have been crazy here. We go from 50* to 10* and snow. Two weekends in a row we had snow. First one was 10" the next weekend another 8". We had a warm day in between both that melted the snow. Got about an inch of snow last night, but temps around 46* called for tomorrow and Tuesday. Then yes, joining KY and NC in the Artic OMG! High on Wednesday is -2*. Needless to say, we won't be doing any pickup or delivery of mowers except for Monday. They tend to freeze on the back of the truck! Not healthy for the driver either.
So I am doing well this month. Got frustrated when scale was reading exactly the same thing every day for a full week. I mean, exactly the same thing!!! I even weighed my trash can just to make sure scale was working! I have only missed my water goal one day since Christmas. I believe I have hit my step goal and exercise goals most days. Logging everything. If I can make it to the end of the month I am looking at a 3 # loss for the month. Excited but.....we had dinner out last night with friends for his birthday. Dinner out today with my family for my husband's, my grandson's, and my birthdays. Most likely dinner out again on Tuesday for husband's birthday. My birthday is on Super Bowl sunday again. Not sure if going to friends' house for Super Bowl party, or just staying in for quiet meal at home and commercial watching. This is same friend that caused lots of drama with my girls about my birthday last year. A lot depends on weather as well since I try not to drive in the snow. I am not spending my birthday throwing up from driving in the snow;) Lots of eating out, so water and steps most important. MFP has me set at 1300 calories a day. I am staying close to that. May need to eat a bit more for loss. Will try out next month with eating more of my exercise calories.
Update on Aubrey- Little one is off oxygen for the first time since she was born!!!! She is in clothes! She is such an awesome fighter!
She is still in hospital for a while, but we are so proud of her!

I agree with so many of you, YOU ARE ALL AMAZING WOMEN!!! From the support given, the sharing done, the tips for everything from eating to dealing with emotions, from births to deaths, from up days and down days! I may not always respond to posts, but know that I read them all! Your sharing touches me every day!
Lisa- I am so happy for your upcoming surgery. I know it is a big deal, but excited for you to be pain free.
Sharon- Such beauty is found in you! Hope your healing is doing well.
Michele in NC- Do you plan what you are going to eat each day or just post when you pluck something in your mouth? Your food diary fascinates me! I see how just a bite or two of something satisfies you. I need to message you about some embroidery stuffs. Will so that soon.
Welcome to the new ladies (at least to me since I missed most of Oct-Dec) I think there are two of you from KY... I am near Dayton, OH. My daughter lives in Independence, KY and is a UK and WKU grad. My MIL is currently selling the farm that they own in Maysville, KY. You live in such a beautiful state!
Healing and peace prayers to all those who are injured, ill, or dealing with either. I have learned things from all of you!
May your day be full of love, laughter, sunshine (even if you have to make your own), and the best choices you can make at the time. We can't redo the past, but we can learn and move forward!
Time to pay some bills and taxes-ugh as well as get paperwork together for accountant.

Barbie: Your comments on knowing what you want to put in the will are right on. We know what we want to put in the will, we just need to get it done and copies sent to both of our kids. :ohwell:Regarding taxes, we also use an accountant. It is worth the money ten times over in the reduction of stress and worry. My husband keeps all the records and it will be hell for me if he passes on before I do.

M in Oz, I am sorry people close to you downplayed what you were feeling. After I spoke with a therapist, I realized that I had shared in the experience of my husband's illness, and healing. That I survived a traumatic event. That sentence alone gave me permission to grieve, to adjust, and to be empowered. It was like I had been holding my breath for months, and the therapist told me to breathe deep. I know my husband makes light of his experience. But I have another version, the daily stress of him not understanding, or comprehending his life. All while raising a teenager in whatever normalcy I could make. You bet we survived! Any day where I feel my inadequacies, I remember what we all went thru.💗. You, and husband share and live a life of epic triumphs!

Yup! Off my cholesterol meds, but doubled my Nexium and Celexa. I tried to get off both but ended up paying in the ER with panic attacks and constant diarrhea these past four weeks. Now dealing with water retention and constipation. Upped my water / liquid intake to half my body weight with one 20 oz bottle of power are zero included in that for electrolytes. Helping. Water weight gone. Constipation is a side effect of keto so upping fiber intake. I take psyllium husk pills daily for fiber, need to add more of a different form that is keto friendly.

Ugh.
Someone stole our general trash bin last week, so I've been piling up trash in the garage. Tonight the next door neighbour knocked and said we could put some bags in hers. One bag went in the other side's bin. We have ordered another one from the council, but it could be some time.
Really hoping I improve tomorrow. Hoping to sleep.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx7 -
Read/ inwardly digested posts, but too tired to comment. Suffice to say that I am in awe of your compassionate souls.

Pip: Congrats on 2500 days! WTG!!!! :flowerforyou:
Rebecca: I love your comments to Machka. You are a person who has been there through your husband’s health crisis and your words are eloquent.
Rita: Congrats on your loss of inches! Yay you!!! I’ve suffered from acid reflux for years but have found relief in a combination of avoiding food triggers and dropping some Rx drugs in favor of others. I also have to sleep partly propped up on pillows if I've eaten the wrong thing. :ohwell: I wish you best luck. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Sending you Peter Rabbit medical advice—drink chamomile tea or mint tea. It helps me as well as Peter so we both recommend you try it. I hope you feel better soon.
We had a lovely skype chat with our son, DDIL, and grandson this morning. It was a real pleasure. They are lobbying that we visit them first on our planned cross-country RV trip this spring. DS will be travelling abroad for work for part of the summer. We want to visit before he has to leave on his trip.

Did 10 Minute Solution Slim & Sculpt Pilates DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to hold my plank then take the extremepump class.
Sharon – what a wonderful family you have! You must be so proud. Our second home was the neighborhood meeting place, too. I almost never had just my own kids. I’d drive to the house and kids would beat me there.
Heather – your dh sounds like he’s getting worse and worse. Is he on any type of antibiotic? And you're not doing so hot, either
Lisa – have a question for you. Vince just bought some GS cookies (I knew I should have gone to the store in place of him!). Anyway, they had this pricing of 5 for $20. Did the cookies go up to $4.50 a box?
Kylia – what I do is I mark down on a piece of paper what I ate during the day and what I will have for dinner. Then I log it all. Many times I find that I need to eliminate something just so I come under goal. Yes, I have planned what exercise I will do each day and what we are going to have for dinner (the main portion, I add in the veges etc later in the day). You are doing so great, making fantastic choices. Sometimes (like for the past few years for me) we don’t lose weight even tho we’re doing everything right. Basically, that’s our body’s way of saying “you’re at the weight I want you to be”
Rita – way to go girl! You rock
Mary – I’m so sorry you have had such a hard time lately. (((HUGS))) Safe travels!
I’ve been thinking about the shower. Right now I’m thinking that making a diaper ship would be nice. Gotta think more on the favors. I don’t want to make something that looks cheap. But I have ideas, like a bag of Chips Ahoy, something where people can write on a diaper hints for the mom-to-be, a bottle of nail polish with some sort of sticker “10 fingers and 10 toes” (not sure about that one) Maybe some popcorn kernels in a small popcorn container with a saying “she’s about to pop”, maybe a tea bag with a saying “something’s brewing”. I remember they didn’t do any games at the wedding shower so I’m thinking that they won’t be wanting to do any games at a baby shower. What I think would be cute but I don’t know if I can do this since it’s not at a house is make ice cubes and in each one put a plastic craft baby. When the ice melts, someone can yell “my water broke”. But I don’t know how to do that. Wonder if I can ask them to write on the cake “from beer bottles to baby bottles” and have a bottle of each – one on one side and one on the other. Maybe I can put these all in a gift bag with something on the front saying “thank you for coming to Denise’s baby shower”. I saw this apron for the dad and on it says “daddy Duty” and below it says “panic button” “call grandma”. I thought that might be cute for Pete. Denise said that he’s supposed to be at the shower. Well…if he isn’t, she can take the present home to him.
Katla – I told Vince that I do enjoy Newcomer membership, but I don’t enjoy the way I’ve been treated and I really don’t want to work with this “new directory”, it doesn’t have the functionality. So if it comes to it, I’ll just say that in good conscience I can’t use the new directory and if we’re going to use it, I think they need to look for someone else to do membership

Rita and Allie, and all who've had success of late, well done!
Heather, I'm so sorry you and your DH and family have all been so badly affected by this bug. 'Flu season's in full swing here, my grandson is really ill, as well. Tough year for this everywhere, I'm thinking.
Michele, every Girl Scout council sets the prices of their cookies in their own area. All cookies here in Arkansas are $5.00 a box this year, but across the U.S., they range in price from $4.00 to $5.00, with some varying the price by the cookie type, or at the same price for all, as they do here. There's an official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, and a Digital Cookie program where cookies can be ordered online. All the net revenue stays with the local council and troops.
And I just found out a few hours ago that the Membership Director of my new council, whom I had met a few times, but did not know well yet, was killed in an accident last night. She was 42, and has a son and daughter that are just barely grown. Will be going to a candlelight vigil tomorrow evening in her honor. Life is so precious, and so fragile, and so easily gone.
Love y'all,
Thinking about you all tonight,
Lisa in Arkansas13 -
Barbara,
My Mom was ready to talk about death and dying..she wanted to live while she had quality of life but knew she didn’t want to live on artificial life support. She initiated getting everything in order.
My husband was the opposite. He was totally uncomfortable discussing end of life concerns. When he had his major heart attack in 2006 the heart surgeon encouraged him to fill out medical directives before his open heart surgery. He couldn’t and wouldn’t discuss what he wanted. Recently his cardiac tests were alarming and his cardiologist insisted on sitting with us and filling out medical directives in her office and a power of attorney for medical should he not be able to make decisions.
I’m so relieved that our paperwork is in order. My husband wants life support and all intervention possible to prolong life. I can respect his wishes. I don’t want that for me.
I don’t know how to have this end of life discussion with a loved one who isn’t ready to talk. It took the cardiologist forcing my husband to communicate his wishes. She was amazing, informative and compassionate but firm in insisting on completion of the paperwork.

Hi Gals,
Thanks for the support gals, I will fill 3 of the hours a week with the embroidery business growth. I can fill the rest with gardening no problem, but in working for the YMCA I was getting some benefits – sick time, some taxes and social security paid by the company, and if I fill the time with private clients the benifits come out of my money, and it’s just nice to have someone else pay for it… Additionally over the weekend someone from the park department and I were talking and he said so I hear the Y is leaving, there are a few other groups considering taking over, I asked do you think they’ll keep the garden, he was not sure but felt it was a priority for the park department. I’ll be working on my resume!
Lisa – knee replacement! That’s exciting and quick! Were you able to move over sick time so you can have off the time you need? How sad to hear of your co-worker
Viv – hang in there, vent to us, get support from your friends and try to listen and not judge too much for your mom, mine lives her whole life in denial and really there is nothing to do for or with it. I refuse to validate it – but just let her talk when she wants to.
Tracey – a walking commute is great! Tailor that resume !
Heather – take care of you and DH
Kelly – I want to come to day care! I am so sad to hear about the child who isn’t getting quality/quantity of food that would be good. But so glad he’s with you for a few meals a week. I love the idea of sharing a recipe with the parent, one that he likes and is both healthy and less expensive. I think many of us that have worked with kids have heard a story about food insecurity from a child it’s heart breaking. There is more poverty and food insecurity than many imagine. Some of it comes from not knowing how to cook well enough to make things that stretch a budget, the American dependence on pre-made food (from a restaurant or the grocery store –frozen) has many down sides. Health, budgets, even time together.
Allie – so glad the doctor is saying nice things, you sounded unsure of him at first. Take care of yourself, it’s important to find the way that is best for your body, and it may not be a cookie cutter of a diet plan but a plan with the tweaks that make it yours.
Kim from N. California
