I feel your pain from the bursitis. I just finished a month of physical therapy and I am sooo much better. I started water aerobics which is also helping. After 2 and a half months I am finally going hack to line 💃 dancing. Hoping you feel better soon!!2

Hi. I am so glad to see this group. I just joined last night I started the FP4H group and living alone I need the support and prayers.4

I finally lost .5 pounds! I think I have been dieting since at least 1975. I’ve been more successful on MFP than I was on WW. I only have 5 pounds to lose.2

Hey, @ridiculous59, my first dragon boat race finally happened today: Very fun.
It was a charity event, just 3 races (heats), around 250-300m, so pretty much pure sprint. Low calorie expenditure, somewhat higher fatigue factor, pretty darned fun.
Our team - which was all women, lots of newbies, and an ad hoc pickup team that doesn't practice other than at the event - finished at 5 out of 10 teams. I don't feel bad about that. In the top 4 were 2 teams that have boats and practice regularly, plus a team formed around a fitness center. (Ours was formed around the local Women's Center, which was also the beneficiary of the event's proceeds.)
It was fun. I put a high value on fun active stuff. I'm happy.8 -
Checking back in from 3 month absence at remote off grid camp. I see several new people, welcome! I was about 3 times as old as all the other people I worked with over the summer, and eating healthy was certainly NOT their focus, haha. Lots of Mac n Cheese, hot dogs. bacon and other processed meats, chips and LOTS of sweets. Vegetables, salads, fresh fish, and grains other than white rice were not a camp favorite, and were scarce in our food supply. I grew a small garden of greens, and I was mostly the only one that ate it! I did not gain any weight, but I sure don't want to check my lipid levels right now. Back home and getting into the swing of healthy eating again. Wonder if the younger people's diets will catch up to them when they reach my age!7

@BCLadybug888 Hahaha, see? I posted here, and now all the posts have stopped! Been gone 3 months, and when I come back and post somewhere, it pretty much kills the thread.0

SbetaK, I am really impressed at your dedication to your food plan. I would love to experience an off grid camp. I’m starting today after two failed attempts. Need to lose 25 pounds. Welcome back.2

Nah. It's been quiet here lately, but we go through bouts of multiple posts fairly close together, then a lull.
Possibly the thread is more active while still on page one or recommended in other threads - posts from newer folks - but long-timers on the thread stop in occasionally even after it drops off page one, maybe?
Realistically, most people of any age who come to MFP don't become long-timers. (Similar thing applies to almost any new activity humans try, but maybe especially true for something that can be un-fun or difficult, like long-term weight loss?)
It's nice to have you back, @SbetaK!
I don't have anything much new to report, just still slogging along, rowing 4x a week, trying to resist the appetite spikes I seem to get every Fall as the daylight gets shorter, and days get cooler.
Anyone got anything new to report/share? How are the newer folks doing: Seeing some progress, having some questions/challenges? Speak up!
I haven't shared any garden/houseplant photos lately, so maybe just throw in one of those in for variety.
It's a double purple Datura. It does this interesting geometric thing before it opens.

Gorgeous flowers, @AnnPT77. Maybe I’ll post some of mine, though I’ve been quite lazy in the garden.
I’m taking the feedback from another thread about possibly thinning hair to heart and upping my protein, so I’m feeling fuller and generally better. I’m struggling with exercise, though. I’m not super-active but usually ride a stationary bike three times a week and do some stretching. But my exercise buddy in my beloved former US city (we talk on the phone while I bike in leisurely fashion and she does a muted walking video) is in Scotland for a few weeks and I haven’t kept up.
Biggest problem - and I’m certain this is age-related - is that I wake up multiple times in the night, have trouble getting back to sleep, and then am too tired to exercise if I get up early or too busy with other things if I sleep late. I know I have to exercise on the early side if it’s going to happen, so this is a real dilemma.
On the up side, I started this about 2 1/2 months ago at around 183-4 (was 190 at an med appointment in January) and weighed in today at 174.2, a pleasant surprise I wasn’t expecting. Initial goal is 160. After that, we’ll see. Slow and steady, with a lot of education and inspiration from this place along the way.4 -
@history_grrrl, I've had sleep interruption insomnia for a couple of decades now (since chemotherapy, which brought on menopause, so I'm not sure of the trigger).
Sleep is a little like weight management, in that different people will benefit from different tactics.
For me, if I have trouble getting back to sleep, one of two things usually helps:
1. A relaxation breathing activity like The Relaxation Response (done in bed in a comfortable sleeping position, not sitting as in the standard form):
http://www.relaxationresponse.org/steps/
2. Progressive relaxation (scan the body briefly part by part, relaxing each area) followed by counting backwards from 100 synchronized with natural breathing. (If you lose track, don't stress, just start over wherever you think you were. If you get to zero, go back to 100 and repeat.)
Those may not help you, but one will usually work for me.

@AnnPT77 Thanks for those excellent suggestions. My go-tos are Headspace and Jon Kabat-Zinn’s body scan, but I’m glad to add to the repertoire. Last night wasn’t too bad, probably because I went to bed pretty early instead of doing my usual night-owl routine.1

Hello, hello 👋
My (mild) concussion is much improved, so allowing myself more screen time lol. Still having headaches but not severe and more sporadic, yay!
And my Bursitis is also much improved, to the point where I went to physiotherapy yesterday, and my leg pain has predictably been agitated, but more so my knee than my hip...go figure. I am delighted to have moved onto this stage of healing nonetheless 😃
Our weather turned to Fall exactly timed to the calendar, we have had glorious rainfall all week and I am so relieved for all the plants and trees especially.
I have been eating at maintenance level for about 6 weeks now (since the Bursa inflammation & not sleeping due to leg pain) so thinking it's time to reign that back in - but just decided on a last minute cruise vacation so probably sticking to maintenance level makes more sense - should have it booked by Saturday and then we'll leave the following Friday! Just wasn't well enough to commit until this week.
Normally I wake up to pee a couple times a night but go right back to sleep - but not lately, as pain nags at me so I take a painkiller and sit up for a bit, 45 minutes or so is the plan but can end up being 3 hours if I start watching something on YouTube or find I need a 2nd painkiller. Hoping my normal pattern returns now that pain is not much of a factor. No way on the cruise will I be up all hours without my daughter cracking the whip lol!
Once I get it booked I will be gearing up for that in a more meaningful way, which includes building up some walking stamina! I bought some hiking sticks and have been using one as a staff as I was so nervous about falling again if the ground was uneven or even at a curb. My foot and outer calf are still partially numb (probably because I'm walking funny due to Bursitis, or maybe due to whatever misalignment that led to the Bursitis in the first place) which combined with my muscle weakness from being basically on bed rest for so long contributed to the fall. The stick folds down easily and is adjustable in height yet feels sturdy in use and I really like using it. I wanted something taller than a cane.
Anyway, reached my screen limit lol, take care everyone 😘

@BCLadybug888, the double purple Datura is outside in a good-sized pot, with some Petunias below. It's not Winter hardy here, so grown as an annual. The blooms are pretty big, maybe 3" (7cm) or so wide, and also rather tall.
Even the seed pods are interesting. They start as a small purple ball then blow up to these 1" (2.5cm) or so green balls with raised purple dots.
Wishing you continued good recovery, and have a wonderful time on your cruise!

I took a long break from posting in any groups I was in in MFP but have been back for a short time though I did still log in here. When I was young I used to wonder at older people who talked about their "mallady's" and now I'm one of them lol
Been going through many "non fatal" malady's but still some painful ones but am better now. What I'm glad about is I never thought I would lose the 20 lbs I gained but I did & took me a year but it's okay, it's actually good because I modified some habits & they became habits. I always have to be aware of not inching back but that's a good thing too. My life has changed through all the physical things that have happened, mostly in the form of not being able to exercise as I did before( which is why I gained the 20lbs because I ate back my exercise calories) but am finding what I CAN do instead of feeling bummed about not going back to what I could do before and am ready to lose a little more weight without too much restriction, just small changes. Adding more things, like more veggies rather than take things away8 -
I just got back from a 2 week cruise and now have to get back to reality. Only gained 2 lbs but know how to lose it.8

Hello pals! Stopping by from somewhere on the Pacific, 28 hours out of Seattle, cruising our way to Hawaii. This has been good for me working on improving my step count after my long bout with bursitis! I am pretty wobbly, and very glad to have brought one of my trekking poles with me for stability but really (finally, thankfully) seem to be on the mend.
Which reminds me - Happy Thanksgiving from Canada 🇨🇦 ! I am having a family dinner after returning home, at the end if the month.
Brought my scale to keep an eye on my wright but not tracking my food, as having lots of nibbles of multiple items. First time going without tracking at all in 2 years - hoping all I have learned sees me through!
@CrazyMermaid1, you did great!
Keep on keeping on. Our health is worth it!4 -
What a great idea! I’m turning 65 in December and it seems I’ve been trying to loose these same pounds for the last 15 years! I’m a yo-yo. I think this will help a lot!2

@BCLadybug888 Glad you are enjoying your cruise. I am going on one next spring! Never appealed to me, I kinda always looked at cruise ships as giant incubators of infection (medical professional here) and too touristy. But...some young friends needed one more person to get a discount, and hit me up. Now, I am getting excited! And hopefully skinnier, working on that. All my friends are 1/3 to 1/2 my age, guess I'll look like the matron watching out for them. Pretty sure I can unbury my party self and maybe outlast them, hahaha. I hope your cruise time brings some fresh healing ocean breezes your way. Good idea to bring trekking poles! I love them, they were essential to me a few years ago while recovering from a broken knee.
Nice to see a few comments trickling in, I check here every day. It's almost like calling up a friend with things in common just for that human touch, connection.5 -
Aloha - I am back, up a mere 3lbs, and ready for yet another kick at this weight-loss can!
Great cruise across the Pacific, and then spent a few days 'cruising' Oahu by land before flying home yesterday.
😉
For some reason, every year I think Summer is going to be a good season to lose weight (I suppose because of all the fresh produce and outdoor activities), but it doesn’t really come to fruition (😆). Probably too many vacations!
However, hope springs eternal (falls eternal?), and I feel very optimistic that I will make some good progress between now and Christmas - aiming for 15-20 lbs. My activity & stamina is steadily improving now that the Bursitis has calmed down 🙏.
How are y'all enjoying your Autumn?
Keep sticking with it!5 -
@BCLadybug888, what a great photo . . . and your smile!
If you're just back, after vacationing and flying, I'd bet some (maybe all) of the scale increase you're seeing will turn out to be water retention, and will drop off pretty quickly once you're in your regular healthy routine again. Most everyone seems to see some water weight after a flight or long drive(s).
Fall is looking good here. My on-water rowing season is clearly running out, which is a bummer for me, but it does happen every year and there's not a darned thing I can do about it, other than shift attention to less-fun indoor activities.
Here's a photo a friend took of our river at one of the club's open rowing sessions on Wednesday. Before darkness, it was nearly ideal rowing conditions.

Hi, I’m Marsha from AR and I’m 75 years old. I’ve been on MFP since 2014 when I broke my hip and needed to lose some weight. I accomplished that and have been in maintenance mode for years, which isn’t easy. I survived 5 rounds of Covid and now been diagnosed with non-motor Parkinson’s disease. Would like to meet others who have PD but also other Seniors who workout and hangout here on MFP. Looking forward to sharing with others.6

Hi I’m 61 and am prediabetic. I started on an anti inflammatory diet with the help of a nutritionist and have lost 12.6 # in 27 days. I go to see my PCP on oct 31 and will have repeat blood work. I am really excited to see what everything shows. There is not a cracker or piece of bread in my house. Just whole real foods. I started a thread I’m going to post my meals to help me remain accountable. We can do this!!3
-
Hi and welcome to this thread, @mlboyer100 and @cathikelly!
Marsha, like you I've been around here awhile (since 2015 - a little shorter than you) and am also in maintenance. I don't have PD. I am pretty active: I'm in the transition season now between Summer rowing (on-water) 4 days a week and adding some cycling/walks between, and my Winter routine that mixes some machine rowing, stationary biking, and usually some strength workouts usually 6 days most weeks. I'm 67, turning 68 next month.
Cathi, you're right, this is doable! I was fortunate not to have blood sugar issues when obese, but did have high cholesterol/triglycerides and high blood pressure. More luck, with weight loss those issues resolved. Blood tests and blood pressure are now solidly in the healthy range.
Sending hopes that your upcoming blood tests will show solid improvement from your efforts!

Cathi, you’re making great progress! Keep up the good work!2
-
Hey all - keep at it, whether losing or maintaining - or even barely maintaining when you should be losing (me), it is so much better than the gaining alternative 😉 and we know we are eating healthier, so that's always a plus!
Ann, your river looks like a lake in that picture, reflecting the sky like glass! Beautiful.4 -
@AnnPT77 Gorgeous pic of your River.1

maintaining weight is always better than gaining, no matter what weight you are. It's important to learn how to maintain. I maintained 198 lbs for years before I started losing1
