@marci320. Thank god you are out of that job. Nothing is worth your health and its time to retire and enjoy your life. Your health is way more important than working your butt off for someone else’s money. I love that you left wil no notice! Stress will kill you. I hope to hear more about journey now that that part of your life is over.2

Hi everyone. 60 near Atlanta Georgia. I use the app a couple of years ago and did really well. I haven’t done so well the last few months going to get back on track.6

Hey all, new + returning + never left!
I never left, but haven't been as active posting on here of late.
I too began this last time ever pursuit of weightloss/health in August 2021 after retiring and had good success the first year (45+ lbs down) and then been up & down the last year (still down 35+) - which if I was in maintenance would be fine, sigh, but I still have 100 lbs to lose...@Pdc654 is my hero & inspiration!
I am pleased not to have thrown in the towel and commenced regain in earnest however, and feel victorious in that. This time it is for life! And I too have embraced the philosophy of not doing anything this time around I can't see sustaining, and trying to build healthy habits - I am just a slow study lol.
I am happy to report I am nearing 100% after the cold to end all colds...was not really feeling up to it last week, but had my family over for a BBQ yesterday (one of my brothers birthday is on the 12th) and I am so glad I did, a good time was had by all and I am pretty much rested up and cleaned up tonight from it all.
We had so many houseflies come in though! Double doors were open onto the deck, and by the time everything was out on the kitchen island I had to keep covers on as there were literally dozens of flies buzzing around.
One of my sisters in law said they had several flies, more than normal, come in that week too. Certainly more than I've ever had.
Funny thing (and good thing!), they didn't really bother us as we were eating (some ate inside & some outside).
After everyone else left, my daughter spent a couple of hours with our zappy flyswatter killing flies, and we estimate 50 minimum!! She has incredibly good reflexes and hand-eye coordination. So grateful she stayed behind to help clear them out as I am not so talented. I was contemplating hanging one if those disgusting molasses strips but there are only 1 or 2 left today so can live with them (tried but they evade me with the flyswatter lol).
I did good with food over the weekend, enjoyed what I had but didn't overindulge.
Lots of easy meals starting off this week with leftovers 😋.
Have a great week everyone!9 -
Oh my gosh, @BCLadybug888, thank you so much! Remember, you can't fail so long as you never give up! Even if it takes longer than you hope for, you're here, and you're committed. You can do it!
Talking of flies, we had the same thing going on when we had the grandkids here. We were in and out the patio door so much, sometimes it got left open and in came the flies. They are really bad this year. We were swatting flies for days after they left.2 -
Good afternoon, just wanted to check in. I took my client to her podiatry appointment this morning & it was too early for me to eat before I left so I had a ham & swiss croissant at the Starbucks she usually likes to stop at on the way home. There's a shop next to it called The Meat Up where they sell smoked meats & she ordered her usual tri tip sandwich & fries then we sat at Starbucks where she gets her goodies & drink from. I usually don't like to eat out but didn't want to be starving when I get home & didn't make the time to bring a sandwich from home so it was all good. The weather's heating up here. The good thing is it's a dry heat but does get very hot. Going to work out with YouTube today inside. Have a good evening everyone7

Hi everyone! It's been quite awhile since I last posted so thought I would check in. Looks like there are quite a few new participants in this discussion, which is so great!! I love to hear from others our age who are taking care of their health and getting fit.
As a reintroduction, I am currently 61 years old and began my lifestyle change January 3rd 2021 at 230 lbs. I am currently at 157.3 and have gone from zero exercise at the beginning of my journey to an average of about 400 minutes per week now, primarily low impact cardio with some strength training mixed in.
I'm still losing weight, albeit very slowly, currently averaging about 1 pound per month, which would have discouraged me a year ago but I'm surprisingly fine with it now. I have about 12 more pounds that I want to lose but I find that I don't really care how much longer it takes me.
Your success stories posted here are so inspiring. To those who are just starting their journey.... you can do this!! It takes consistency and a lot of patience.

I don't think I mentioned this, @GinLee61 reminded me...the last 20lbs took me over a year to lose. I lost 1+ lb a month but I lost it when I didn't think I could because mfp gave me 1200 cal/day to keep losing at the weight I was at & I wasn't willing to eat that low so I'm happy. Time passes whether we lose or not, right? I've lost a total of 50lbs & over that time I practiced habits that became "normal" The one that still bothers me some of the time is I used to eat till I was full which I think is what kept me overweight but now I wait 10min after I'm done eating for the day on days where I still want more. It takes at least that long for the food I ate to hit stomach & feel the fullness. I'm not an emotional eater, I actually lose my appetite when I'm stressed, sad or angry. The time I do get cravings is right before I get sick. I crave mashed potatoes with chili beans & lots of cheese the most, weird6
-
@Evamutt Your craving doesn't sound that weird. A mix of carbs, protein, and fats, without lots of sugar. You could do far worse!2

@Pdc654 95/54 is a scary BP! It sounds like maybe you are taking the Losartan and you may not need to. You've taken off so much weight and changed your health dramatically. I take Losartan but hope to get off of it with healthy eating and exercise. Keep us updated! @Evamutt It sounds like you went from one stressful job to another. Is there any way you can retire completely? I know I'm going to still have to work after I'm off disability because there are too many bills to pay. Maybe you can find a job you would enjoy doing? @delph8759 Welcome! Sounds like we have the same goals. No more meds! I hope you'll come back and share your journey with us. @ThisMagicMoment I'm 66 as well and feel the same way--encouraged by people losing weight at our age. Let's be one of those people too! @Jadiva18 I wish I could be one of those people who can just retire and enjoy life, but I'm going to have to work as long as I can because I owe too many bills. I'm just going to find a job that isn't as stressful as my last one. I probably sound like a diva, but I don't want to work overtime or have a long commute. My last job nearly killed me. @tdunevent5016 Good luck on getting back on track. I know it is a rather hokey saying, but when at first you don't succeed try, try again and my own saying (stolen from someone) You have to start in order to finish. @BCLadybug888 Congratulations on keeping off most of the weight you initially lost. Many people don't start again until they have gained all their weight back and then some. Be encouraged that you have less to lose than you did before. I wish you the best. @GinLee61 YOU are an inspiration as well! Congrats on losing so much weight and keeping it off! Well, I am off to the movies to beat the heat. I'm bringing my own snacks--bag of popcorn, carrots, 2 cutie oranges, and a bottle of water. I hope you all have a great weekend!2

We have enough $ to live on & are very fortunate that our kids will help us out with anything that comes up & we can't afford. Our house is paid off & only payment is our car we bought 3 years ago so I don't HAVE to work. With the small amount of hours I make under $100 a month, it does help. I just always felt responsible for what I do & don't want to "abandon" her, that's why if I do quit I'll take her to lunch twice a month.
I'm so used to going outdoors & I did walk this morning but with the heat this weekend I have to make plans what to do inside. Hopefully I can get myself to organize & clean some things, I don't watch tv till 8pm & don't like to sit for too long at a time2 -
Spending a few days in Lake Placid with the grandsons this week. I've definitely been eating off plan but doing a lot of walking and still eating much less than I would have 2 years ago. Missing my normal aerobic workouts though.
We took the gondola to the top of little Whiteface Mountain today. A little scary but the view was worth it.
Heading home tomorrow then I'll get back on track.

(snip amazing photo for reply length, but please do scroll up and look at it again!)
Isn't amazing to reach the point where one's regular exercise activities are fun, desirable, so evidently beneficial, missed when they can't happen? So good!
It sounds like you're having a wonderful time. That view is breathtaking!6 -
Hey all, I am in the midst of 10 days holidays, scale up a couple of lbs but it is my travel scale so never matches home exactly; I like having it for accountability.
Here is the view from our shady spot at our Motel, very hot here but so relaxing! And full AC in our suite to retreat to lol.
This area is the northern tip of the Sonoran dessert where it peaks into Canada and this is the warmest lake, so no greenery here!
Lots if wineries and orchards, loving all the fruit & veggie stands - helps mitigate the snack food.

@BCLadybug888 , I know exactly where you are.
The view at the beginning of April.
Cheers, h.

A one off post on this thread but I was amused that I instantly knew where you were and I had almost the same shot.6 -
Beautiful @BCLadybug888 ! You go on so many wonderful trips! You should be a travel agent!0

It looks so peaceful & relaxing0

First time searching groups….61 years old and at my heaviest weight and feeling disheartened. Had a horse related major injury and still on semi bed/couch rest. Started yet another attempt today to eat better and lose weight….9
-
@LolaGatto I know how difficult it is to be on even semi bed/couch rest, especially when you are doing things like riding horses for fun, but you can do this. You have time to plan your meals and you can still lose weight without exercising. You'll be in much better shape when you get back to normal. I'm rooting for you!3

LOL - so last year after recovering from retiring, I signed up to be a travel agent!! But I quit this year as I really can't handle work-related stress anymore it seems, and hard to control the workload - I want to be able to work just a few hours a week, but if you are someone's travel agent, and suddenly booking a group trip for extended family - it can get quite hectic!5 -
@LolaGatto , glad you found this group. I too was very discouraged 1.5yrs ago when, after an injury couldn't exercise at all & gained back 18 of the 50lbs I lost. This was in 2020 & I did maintain the new weight till 1.5yrs ago & never thought I'd lose it & accepted it but I stated listening to a podcast & it encouraged me to make small changes which I did & it took a year but I'm down 21lbs!! I have a friend who is in a wheelchair & she lost 70lbs so it goes to show you really don't need to workout to lose weight. I was still able to walk (my dogs) but that was it. I've started back to the gym about a month ago, some treadmill but mostly swimming. I don't think I can go back to the level I was doing but I'll do what I can & I sure feel better doing a little more. It also turned my habit changes into normal after all this time so good things did come out of it. Welcome & hope to hear more from you6
-
Welcome @LolaGatto . So sorry about your injury. Start slowly and weigh and record ALL your food. After you are better and your doc gives you the go ahead you can add in exercise. I started with just walking a few minutes a day and built from there. Don't get discouraged. Slow weight loss is best, and it will help you build habits you can maintain for the rest of your life.2

Welcome! As others have mentioned you can lose weight without exercising. I commend you on your effort. If you are able to lose a bit now you may find it a little easier to start moving once you have the go ahead to do so. Losing just 5% of my starting weight helped make it a little easier for me to get up on my feet when I first made my lifestyle change. Wishing you a speedy recovery!4 -

I read somewhere that we eat less to lose weight. And we exercise for our health. So yes, you can lose weight without exercise.....but it's sure not as much fun. Wishing you a speedy recovery3 -
Hi all, it sure is quiet here! Hope everyone is having a nice summer and managing to stay cool! I just wanted to share a quick update. In a nutshell, I quit my job in June due to too much stress and have been on disability since. With the stress gone, and no stress eating for over a month, I had a blood test the other day and wanted to share the results.
Hemoglobin A1c went from 6.6 to 6.0.
Cholesterol went from 365 to 148.
LDL Cholesterol went from 290 to 108.
Glucose went from 121 to 100.
WBC went from 30 to 6.
I take my blood pressure daily and it is down from 200/94 to usually a number like 120/74 (this morning's BP), and I've lost 19 pounds.
I walk about a mile a day.
My hope is that this encourages someone. Things look very different after just a little over a month, and my hope in getting healthy has been restored.
I also wanted to thank so many people who posted advice and suggestions for me back when I first signed up.10 -
Apologies for the fuzzy photo, but this is a thing that rarely happens**. It's a whole quad rowing shell in which all of the rowers are 60+. (** We row mixed ages, 20s to 70s, so there's often at least one person in the boat under 60.)
That's me at the left (in bow, because we face the stern), two guys in their early 60s in the middle, and a woman who just turned 78 at right in the stroke seat. This was taken by another club member in a different boat, on one of our regular bridge-to-bridge round-trip rows, just under 7k - takes about an hour, including a couple of water breaks.

Cool!
So Ann, if you are all facing backwards - who steers?? I thought one person would still face forward...like a lookout if nothing else. With 4 people rowing, I imagine you could go pretty fast!
