Welcome, @bobbieg101. You've come to the right place. Lots of support and encouragement here. Just start slow and increase your activity level as you can. Start logging your food and you will get a handle on the appropriate calorie level for your situation.
Things are up and down at my house. My wife has constant joint pain now. I've tried to get her to go to the clinic for an evaluation, but she's resistant. She says, "They can't do anything for me". She has an appointment with the oncologist in a couple of weeks. I have been getting some walking in, and that is keeping my stress levels under control.

Husband had last round of chemo yesterday so now it's wait and see. It may take several months to see improvement. Steve, I was thinking of all you are going through and how strong you are. Your an inspiration.2

Sending strength and good wishes to you both, Steve. I hope your wife will be willing to talk with the oncologist about her joint pain at that appointment. The scenarios were very different, but with my and my husband's cancer treatments, I did find the oncology team willing to listen and make changes to try to improve symptoms or side effects. Realistically, some of those changes were more effective than others, but I came away with the conclusion that it's always good to bring up anything that's troubling.
I'm glad to hear you're still able to work in some exercise and "you time": That's an important thing for a caregiver.
Wishing you the smoothest possible course through these difficult times!1 -

Sending good wishes for positive progress for your husband, @anawake13, and support for you as a caregiver, too. People will say "it's harder for the caregiver" or "it's harder for the patient", but having been in both roles, I think it's that both are challenging, but in very different ways.
Wishing you both good outcomes!4 -
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and prayers for a healthy, peaceful new year! Letβs hope for an end to COVID 19!!!!!!7

As @alteredsteve175 would say. I had a whoosh today! Even after having Pumpkin cheesecake yesterday but I did behave with the meal. So I actually lost after my Thanksgiving and Christmas meals!
Hope everyone had a nice Christmas with family and Wish You All A Happy New Year!1 -

Greetings, all. Haven't checked in here for a few days. Good to see that you all are keeping focused on your healthy lifestyle goals.
I am a member of another group here on MFP. It's called "Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep It Off". A great support group with a weekly weigh in. There are other optional challenges that you can participate in, if you like. Or don't. That's okay too.
Regardless, the camaraderie and mutual support is great. The group has been very helpful to me over the last couple of years. Please join us if you like.

Happy New Year, one and all!3 -
I've been on and off MFP for years. Been away for a while and ready to jump back in again. I'm 73, so definitely qualify for, and will embrace joining in! Bill1

Best of the holiday season to everyone! I hope that everyone that celebrates Christmas had a very merry one. Ours was more quiet than past years, but I actually revelled in the peacefulness. I guess I'm getting old. LOL
I've been so much better at managing our holiday food this year. We usually have the family here on Christmas Eve and there is always way to much food in the way of appetizers, cheese, cold cuts, etc. This year I scaled way, way back. We still did appetizers on Christmas Eve, but there was only 4 of us and I cooked accordingly. We still have some cheese and salami in the fridge, but all of the cooked foods got finished Christmas day while waiting for the turkey. As for the turkey dinner, I made the usual amount of stuffing, divided it in half. One half for Christmas day and I froze two other containers; I to give to my daughter (her family doesn't eat stuffing and she loves it) and the other for us in the future.
The turkey has been stripped and the stock has been made.
I have enjoyed a few butter tarts, a few mince tarts and a few shortbread over the last couple of weeks. I purposely didn't weigh myself. So a week later, when I stepped on the scale this morning, I'm happy to report that I'm only up half a pound! I'll take it!
January 1st I'm planning on doing my 6th Whole30. For me, it's a wonderful way to reset my body for the year and to give my body a rest from the foods that it's sensitive to. I always feel wonderful at the end of the 30 days and the bonus is that I usually lose a few pounds in the process! The first couple of days are the toughest. It's not that I crave foods, more the habit factor. If I'm feeling nibbley, I'll automatically reach for a piece of cheese which is a no no on Whole30. Also, emptying out pantries is not something I can do or want to do for that matter. There are others living in the house and I am not about to force my priorities on to everyone else.
I've also been really slack in the exercise department of late!! Definitely need to step up my game there. I got a new set of walking poles for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to getting out and giving them a spin!

@SharGetsHealthy - You'll rock those walking poles!

I learned a new word today - nibbley. That cracked me up, Shar. π
I will use that word in the future!
A second on the walking poles. I use them when hiking in the desert hills and they are great for lessening the strain on your knees. Please let us know how they work for you.

That's really good to hear. Knees tend to be a weakness in our family.

What are walking poles?0
-
They're like ski poles. You use them to stabilize yourself or take some weight off your knees. Some people also use them to walk faster on level ground. Hikers and climbers use them doing uphill or downhill

Thanks Steve!!1

Walking poles are also called trekking poles. Make sure you have them adjusted to the proper height. I have problems with my hands wrists and elbows so I don't always use them when I hike.1

I was with spark people. Lost weight and, enjoyed the exercise videos.
I am watching diet. Have control of diabetes. Trying to walk...lets do this..the year is ending.π
Keep moving, at least 10 minutes.2 -

That's a great point. Try different lengths to figure out what is comfortable for you. I start with them at elbow length for level ground. Then I shorten them when hiking uphill and lengthen them for downhill hiking.3 -
Greetings to those recently joining the thread: Happy you're here, and hoping you'll be very successful!
Status update from me: I did some planned indulging on Christmas as I'd done on US Thanksgiving (and my birthday not long before that). There were a few extra peaks in there, too, but I'm back down at about the maintenance weight I was before all of that, 125/126 pound kind of zone.
Right after Thanksgiving, I mentioned on this thread that I'd started the Concept 2 Holiday Challenge, with the goal of completing 200,000 rowing machine meters/400,000 stationary bike meters, or some combination thereof, by Christmas Eve. I managed 211,125 total challenge meters (counting bike meters as half-meters), without causing any kind of overuse injury, which is good. This was my 5th year in a row of completing the challenge, but I've done it a few times in earlier years, too - maybe 8 total times?
This year, my Garmin thinks the Challenge was good for 6,685 calories in total (doesn't seem like much, does it? π), though I have to admit I ate them along the way as I burned them, I didn't save them up for the holiday. π
I live alone, and in the pandemic have been soloing holidays at home. I decided I'd celebrate by cooking and eating whatever I wanted, even if totally nontraditional, and not worrying too much about calories. Christmas was oven-fried potatoes for breakfast (with ketchup and coffee - that's it), a savory crustless pumpkin "pie" with fresh herbs in it for lunch (think quiche-like), and a black bean/queso fresco tamale casserole for dinner.
The Holiday Challenge helps me shift my (reluctant) mind from on-water rowing and outdoor biking season, to doing some admittedly less fun stuff to keep a modicum of conditioning in the Winter (sigh). I need to fine-tune my plans, but for now my tentative stopgap plan is alternating indoor row/indoor bike for about a half hour 6 days a week, and gradually adding strength training on row days and some core exercises on bike days . . . at least in theory. (I'm kinda unreliable in Winter. π) I'm also working on resuming a yoga/stretch routine for a few minutes most days before breakfast.
I'm planning to solo-celebrate again for New Years, so am again thinking of cooking/baking some special things, still in the planning stage.
I haven't shared any plant photos recently (probably to your relief), but I think I have a fun one. I've been lucky to have some orchids that have rebloomed in the house recently, including a first time blooming from this crazy-tiny one, Poroglossum hystrix, that some of my friends thinks looks like an angry fish or an alien. (That's a normal ball point pen tip in the photo with it, for scale.)
Happy New Year to all!9 -
Oh my gosh Ann, that is a tiny little thing. I have an orchid that I think is trying to send up a bloom stem. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between that and the air roots, but this appears to have 3 little nubs at the end, so I think it is bloom.
Eating has been good the last few days, but I haven't bothered to do any exercise. It's really snowy here and I don't feel like going outside. LOL I'll get my act together on Jan. 1.3 -
Now that 2021 is just about out the door, I would like to wish all a Happy New Year and may you all reach and maintain your fitness goals throughout 2022!4
-
Good job @AnnPT77 on your rowing challenge!
I also did some planned indulging over the holidays. In 2020 I gained a few pounds in the second half of the year and then lost them once I got back on track on January 1st. It would appear that the same has happened in 2021 and so starting tomorrow I'll be back to more disciplined eating. I seem to do best when I limit my carbs to a maximum of 100gr per day within my calorie allowance, and of course, daily exercise.
We've had some nasty cold weather this past week (-34C this morning) but I've managed to get out snowshoeing with the dogs most days. As an aside, I love my Black Diamond trekking poles for snowshoeing and just bought some for my husband this Christmas. My son always uses them while backpacking because he says it relieves some of the strain on his back. Not sure if that would be the case when walking without a big backpack but could possibly be another benefit to using them?
Happy New Years Eve to everyone!

Well this year is almost a wrap. I'm pretty much at the same spot as last year but not a lot more. Starting again but not defeated. Wishing you all a good new year. May you be inspired to pursue health and keep moving ahead. Thanks to all of you who share your journey. You inspire me to not give up.ππ

Wow! That flower is tiny. Yes to the alien angry fish. Love your holiday food plans. Good luck on the winter exercise regimen.

Happy New Year! I'm hoping to make some significant strides towards better health this year. Was a member for a while years ago - tried Noom last year but I don't like their food tracking. Hoping for some concrete support - not into the "rah rah - you can do it" kind of pep talk -- maybe I need some tough love... who knows! I have lost 60 pounds, only to regain 25. I'd love to lose those 25! I have some joint problems so right now walking seems to be the only activity I can do without pain. Recent shoulder problems keep me from starting any weight training right now. Happy to find a group for us over 60 people!4

Hey y'all! I"m Rick in Indianapolis. Long story short, lost 90, gained 40 back. Sound familiar? I'm finding I really need the social aspect of getting and staying healthy, and I'd love a friend request or a few. Happily married, and in my spare time I enjoy cycling, hiking, geocaching, and I"m a ham radio operator. Thanks for taking the time to read this!10
