I am 5 ft 2, have a small frame and am very active. I'm also post menopausal and 56 years old. I lost 26 lbs on 1200 calories a day. If I eat over 1300 a day I gain weight. Most days I am right around 1200 give or take 100. I also do not eat breakfast. I break all the so called rules and am fine. The point here is if your healthy, feel well and eat a decently healthy diet your ok on 1200 calories as long as your not so thin your unhealthy. And, if your so thin your sick you have mental issues so you are likely eating less and think 400 a day is ok so would never eat 1200 anyway.

Listen to your body and be smart. If your really hungry EAT! I do no matter how many calories I have eaten. I'll get out of bet at midnight and make a sammich if I'm hungry.

For those who are still trying to calculate my things.... I know my TDEE is 1600/1700 because that's what I've always eaten (well, except when I gain my weight duh) and that's what I've been eating for the past 2 weeks, guess what, I didn't gain or lose an ounce during those 2 weeks, so yep, my TDEE is ok and due to an immune disease I get constantly tested (CBC, vitamins, etc, once a month) so I know for sure my nutrition levels are perfect, so thank you for your input, but for me it's perfectly ok to eat what I'm eating.

I just wanted to point out the importance of reading the whole thing before saying your opinions. That's about it. The next time you see a topic about 1200, if you really read this, you'll remember and you will give your advice to somebody else having all the important factors in mind and reading everything that the person said. That was my motivation for writing this, because I've seen it too many times ;)

Maybe people should give all the relevant info when they ask for help and not on page 3, 5, or 17 in hopes that everyone will wade through and see the part where then mention illness, surgery, their doctor, or whatever else they felt like adding after the fact.

    Bueller? Bueller?"

THANK YOU!!! That's what I said! She was never asking for personal advice, she was asking that if you see 1200 calories to read the post before launching into a starvation speech because some people have legitimate reasons for eating that way. Finally someone gets it!

If you lose weight (let's say a pound per week just for the sake of argument) on 1200 then you wouldn't gain weight until you were eating over 1700. What you're seeing is that your body replaces your glycogen stores when you first increase calories. In other words, it's just water weight and would go away if you kept up the higher intake. Just in case you ever decide that you do want to eat more, it would be sad for you to think that 1300 is maintenance for you.

    you're wasting your breath.

sadly, insisting that 1200 calories is "perfect" for them has become a point of pride with so many of the ladies who eat 1200 calories, that they cannot and will not ever admit they are wrong or seek a more fulfilling and more effective way to lose/maintain weight.

i know that for a small percentage of women, 1200 calories (without any exercise!) is an accurate calculation. however, for the large majority it is not.

whenever i post on one of these threads, i do so only for the lurkers out there who are confused. they've read Cosmo which tells them that 1200 is ok, and they have a rail thin friend who insists that 1200 is ok, so they think 1200 must be ok... i want them to know that there is a better way than to embrace the silly yo-yo dieting program that inevitably follows from 1200 calorie diets.

People who say 1200 is not enough are either still overweight or they lost or are losing weight the "right way" (slower) but are jealous because other people have found success losing weight faster at 1200 without any ill effects.

No jealousy, just science. This sounds like projection. It's the poster who is jealous of those of us who are patient enough to lose slowly and can Eat The Food instead of skipping dessert.

To each their own. My plan is to lose weight eating as much as I possibly can so that when I hit maintenance I can maintain while still eating a lot. Nom. Nom. Nom. Some days I eat 1200 in one meal. Still losing!

^^^ This is the only thing that makes sense, from a metabolic and psychological standpoint.

A lot of times, "you can eat more than 1200 and still lose weight" seems more intended as reassurance than criticism. Don't always assume the worst.

Meh, a *lot* of people got it...

...which you would know if you had read through all of the pages...

    ...but you didn't.

Instead, you just found a recent comment that you liked and you launched into a "finally someone gets it" speech.

If you want to slow your metabolism and be stuck HAVING to eat so little. Go ahead. When the body does not get enough calories metabolism slows period. This is from caveman times when the body had no idea when the next food was coming. Of course you may be the special snowflake exception to science. If so great. Have at it enjoy your snacks. I will eat my meals at about 1700 calories having lost over 100 lbs doing so.

There's studies that show otherwise. Your metabolism slows down when you lose weight, but not because of some starvation mode yada yada. Your body has fat to burn, therefore it won't be starving.

The problem with 1200 calories is not weight loss. It really isn't. The problem is nutrition. It's harder to get all the vitamins and minerals you need on 1200 calories.

i get where you're coming from, and I've just remembered that I'm doing what works for me. Some people our height will lose at 1600 a day. Some lose at 2000. I lose when I eat 1200 plus exercise calories. it's just what works for me. I've tried everything else (and given every other option enough time to make a difference) and it just doesn't work. That being said, I understand that what I do doesnt work for everyone else either.

If you are female 1200 is just fine and men about 1500..............Starvation mode really doesn't happen until you are below about 6% body fat but I think what people are thinking is if you eat too few calories you can actually lower your metabolism in turn lowering your BMR and in turn creating a lower deficit than what you think. Pay no attention to the haters!

1200 is fine for SOME women... I would have to become less active and find a less active job to stay healthy on little. My body TDEE is right at 3000 calories so dropping to 1200the would be detrimental to my health and goals.

We are all (or should be) adults here so I don't get the over use of blanket statements, haters, and all the jealously. It reminds me of high school.

1200 IS perfectly fine for SOME women depending on many different factors. If some one is responsible and sets their goals correctly and they actually need to be eating a that amount then there should be no problem. The problem is a lot of people who post 1200 calorie threads are the ones struggling. It isn't hating to give and opinion that would vear them away from the whole 1200 calorie thing. I have also seen posts where the op fails to mention a health condition until pages later afer all the drama is going strong. I guess what I am saying is welcome to the interwebs!

yes it is, but at the of the week I get it all in according to nutritiondata.com. I am currently injured ,no activity, but was eating 2000+ daily to maintain. I can do it at 1200 if I eat well, it just takes a bit more planning. My RMR averages out to 1170. It doesn't matter what I eat really, I always weigh between 97 or 107. I'm not looking to lose weight.

I only, partly have myself to blame? Or did I eat all of the pie, but only consumed a fraction?

I think I had my cake, and saw it too...

    So. Much. Math.

And now I want some pie.

Edited because I realized I don't really care why someone whose weight has always been dead on would be here and purposefully make themselves underweight to prove some weird point, nor why the lack of weight issues becomes a focus point on most posts....carry on...

So if someone is asking for advice and there's already 15 pages of posts, anyone who responds should, according to you, be required to read through all of them, including the inevitable sidetracking and debating over irrelevant nonsense, mile-long infiniquotes, etc ad nauseum, before they are allowed to have an opinion of their own?

Maybe they have something valuable to contribute and don't have 6 hours to spend reading every last post in every thread but still would like to add their comments. Maybe their time is better spent adding their comments to that many more "I need help" threads. Don't you think they might be more qualified to decide how their own time is best spent, instead of having you lecturing them about how you think they should spend their time?

    Really?!
Heaven forbid one should actually read the thread rather than throw their 2 cents in all willy-nilly
    Gasp! the very IDEA!!! :noway:

Hi there, could somebody help me out with the maths please as im utterlyh opeless at maths and Im also anxious Im doing it wrong now too. When I joined MFP I entered my age as 53 my height at 5ft4 and my weight then was 210 (this was 4 weeks ago) MFP told me to eat 1200 calories and I would lose 1.3 pounds a week

Its not for me to argue with a computer and not knowing any better thats what ive done for the last month. I assumed MFP computer knows better than me how to add up and work it all out, so I trusted what I was told , its still all there in my goals

I have lost 14lbs in 4 weeks as of yesterday. Although ive been thrilled, after reading all these posts im now horrified. At the moment im 196 pounds and think I should get down to around 135 eventually. But if im going to be patient and get the fat off long term i would be heartbroken to pile it all back on again, so could somebody look at my stats for me and tell me what I could eat calorie wise and lose a 1lb a week, I would be very grateful, I dont want to eat only 1200 if I could be eating more. Especially as I dont want to lower my metabolism . To recap Im 53, 5ft 4, currently weigh 196 lbs and I dont do any exercise except light housework and occasional walks . I do plan on doing exercise when my arthritis eases up but at the moment I genuinely am sedentary

Many thanks in advance it would mean a lot to me.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. People don't read the topics. Once they see the 1200 calories they give an immeadiate speech about it without reading anything else.

I repeat, I eat at a 400 calorie deficit. That will not make my metabolism to commit suicide. Good for you, you can eat 1700 and lose weight, my TDEE is 1700.

Your TDEE is 1700 so 1200 is fine. The problem is with individuals whose TDEE is more like 2500 or more whom consume a merely 1200 calories a day. IF YOU ARE SMALL, EAT LIKE A SMALL PERSON. IF YOU ARE BIG, EAT LIKE YOU"RE SUPPOSED TO LOSE NOT LIKE A TINY SMALL PERSON OP.

Of course there are no citations, it is pure bullsh1t centred around the starvation mode myth. I sympathise totally with the OP.
