4/1 = rest/dying from weekend overload day
4/2 = 3 struggle/sore recovery miles
4/3 = rest day
4/4 = 8 miles
4/5 = 6 miles
4/6 = 13 miles (Wanderlust Half)
4/7 = severe weather cancelled run
The half I ran yesterday was a small & well put together jewel of a local race. The race route was all gorgeous rolling hills and fields of wildflowers. I wish I had not left my camera in the car for the run. Thunderstorms were predicted but they held off until after the race. I did have to drive 2 hours home with a severe thunderstorm warning, flash flood warning and tornado watch in effect. That kind-of sucked.
My time sucked but I am finding myself caring less and less about all that lately. Running is a lot more fun when it doesn't feel like punishing work all the time.
My legs are SORE. The hills kicked my BUTT. Who knew the Texas HILL County would be so HILLY? LOL! I was thanking the rain gods for thunderstorms this morning and giving me an excuse to cancel my scheduled Sunday run.
Apparently, I need to add in some weekly hill repeats. Damn it....
April goal miles ? / Miles to Date = 30 miles
Upcoming Races:
5/4 = Wisconsin Marathon (Mittens Challenge Part 1)
5/5 = Kalamazoo Marathon (Mittens Challenge Part 2)
6/15 = Fit Foodie 5k17 -

That sounds really good running advice. LOL
Congrats on your race!

@katharmonic "Mountain Goat" sounds like lots of fun trails and hills!
@_nikkiwolf_ You might think that but there are no trails or mountains or actual goats involved. Just hilly city streets.
Great job getting your long run done after a big day of skiing! Enjoy relaxing on the couch!3 -
@martaindale congratulations on the race! Gators? Oh man, that’s one way to motivate a pr!1
-
@amymoreorless congrats on your HM, and glad you got home safe. Always wanted to go to the Texas Hill Country, but haven't got there yet.
11.25 miles this morning. Was not prepared for 100% humidity, 62F, zero wind. So didn't take any water, and only grabbed 2 Gatorade chews. So I struggled, even going slow. Had to cut it short or I would have been late for church. Had I gone another .5 miles, would have cracked the top 5 on Strava leader board for the week 😃

Hogeye Marathon yesterday. Was not good, but I finished (that is all I really wanted anyway).
Slow time was a result of several factors. Shortly before the half-way mark, I started experiencing calf cramps. I had some Hot Shot drink and some Ultima electrolyte powder, which solved that fairly quickly. However, somewhere around mile 16 (more or less), I started feeling severe nausea and it only got worse. I ended up stopping for several minutes at a bathroom and only vomited a little bit... still felt pretty bad. I ended up walking a significant amount of the last 8 miles. I normally run fasted, but with my gallbladder removal last month, I had not considered how slowly digestion of large quantities of fat could be. I ate a package of beef sausage sticks on Fri. night while driving to the race. Much of that was still in my stomach while running, as I could start to taste it again when I was nauseatd. You can see how things really went badly towards the end as my last 6 miles pace shows I was walking about all of it.
Anyway, despite the slow time, I finished... so I call that a success. (Whoever was it that said, "You either win or you learn" ?)

I'd say that was a pretty good finish, minus your gall bladder and all.1 -

Not only did he take away your sweep, but he did it so fast, he didn't even podium for time spent running!
That is only because he ran on flatter ground!
(not really, he is way faster than I, but shhhhhh )1 -
@midwesterner85 Sorry about the rough race. Good work on finishing it despite the issues!1

I still had a cold when i woke up but i went to the race. So i went undertrained and under the weather.
The race started well. I was definitely sick but i was hanging in around 12:40 and 13:00 but nothing was too horrible or aching. Around mile 12 i started to feel tired. Between 16 and 24 there was a mental battle. I just wanted to sit down. Just for one second. About mile 20 the fever came back with a cough. Hacked up something bloody. The last two miles were neverending. My Garmin showed it was 26.4 miles. Only saw the sag bus once on an out and back.
I think if i keep training it will be easier next time. A half used to kill me. And most days it's not bad.22 -

I had to look it up... it was Nelson Mandela and the quote is: "I never lose. I either win or I learn."6 -

Congrats @midwesterner85 & @mbaker566 on your marathons! A marathon is a grueling thing even in the best of circumstances. You guys are amazing for fighting through in less than ideal conditions.7
-
@midwesterner85 way to tough it out and finish that marathon! I salute you for fighting through.
@mbaker566 great job on your marathon too! Running a marathon while sick is just remarkable. Your pictures look great...you look like you are having fun!3 -
April goal: 85 miles
4/2: 5.07 miles
4/3: 4.63 miles
4/4: 5.05 miles
4/7: 8.41 miles
23.16/85 miles completed
I had a great run this morning. It was humid (98-100% depending on which app you looked at) but it was only about 64F and there was a light breeze so it wasn't awful. I really had a fun run. My son is moving to Japan for a year on Friday and so he was in town and my daughter was home as well. So even though I stayed up too late last night, I got up pretty early to run before everyone else got up. It was cloudy and quiet. I saw lots of birds and then on a certain stretch of road I saw a dachshund that I always see. I feel really sorry for him because his people keep him chained to a tree in the front yard (which is against the law in our county). He does have a little igloo doghouse, but that is it. I heard him barking and didn't see him and finally realized he had climbed up in the tree. I laughed at him and thought he must think he was a goat. Then at the end of the road I saw goats. And they had babies. I've been waiting to see if they would have baby goats at that house again this spring and they did. There were about 5 babies and 3 adults. And two of the babies were climbing and jumping all over one of the adults. it looked like they were playing "Hop on Pop." They were adorable and I just laughed out loud at their antics. Then when I turned to head back I saw a deer in the road. She looked at me for a bit and then jumped the fence and went off the other way. Then another deer came and followed her and then three more. They were beautiful. I took some pictures, but they weren't very good. I was really too far away.I love days when you have a run that just feels so good and enjoyable. I had considered waiting until everyone had left to run, but I am so glad I got up and ran when I did. Then later this afternoon I took the dogs for a short walk. My son is leaving his dog with us while he is in Japan. He has a corgi and he is not as good at walking on a leash as my two. But I think with some work he will get better.
I'm a little behind on the thread, but it looks like there were some great races this weekend. @midwesterner85 Great job on completing your marathon so soon after your surgery. And @mbaker566 Way to go on completing your marathon while sick. You look great in the photos! You'd never know you were feeling ill!
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon11 -
I’m late to the party and took some time away when I was having trouble keeping up with this thread. I was focusing on cross training a lot last month, but my Garmin bit the dust so after upgrading its time to try out the new metrics. It was beautiful around midday (around low 50’s). Less than .25 miles in the long sleeve T-shirt was tied around the waist. It just felt great to be out.
Goal will be 50 miles for April. Working on getting caught up with the thread.
4/7 - 4 miles
Total 4 miles/Goal 50 miles10 -

My throat was raw and swollen. No blood today🙂2 -
Congrats @amymoreorless on your HM. I'm feeling you on the hill running.
Big congrats to the hardcore efforts of @midwesterner85 and @mbaker566. Completing marathons under those conditions is some serious toughness.6
