@midwesterner85 congrats on your marathon! Very impressive. And a 50k next weekend. Wow.
@simcon1 great job! Congrats on placing in your AG - that's fantastic. And the size medium shirt
@shanaber - so many runners in San Diego. Not surprising with the pleasant weather that it would be a huge community. Good job on your hill work, even if slow right now. Have a great road trip - sounds like some fun places to run and explore.
After the long travel day yesterday, I slept like a rock last night for the first time in months. Stayed in bed forever and have so far only made it to the kitchen and the couch because I wanted coffee. Now I settling in here and will decide later if there is anything else on the agenda for the day. I would like to get a run in and it's supposed to rain this afternoon so I may have to get moving in a little while.7 -

Haven’t updated in a few days and now I’m almost 200 posts behind 😬
This past Wednesday was my last Regymen class. I enjoy the class, but I can’t justify paying an extra $60 a month (on top of the Ymca membership) to keep going. I did the 3 free classes they offered. I wish it weren’t so expensive.
On a happy note, I’m totally excited about watching the Boston marathon tomorrow morning!!6 -

From sunny and 55 degrees F yesterday to 40 degrees F and rainy today, with a brisk wind out of the northeast. Really needed the recovery run; had some leg cramps last night and even dreamed that a shark was biting my right foot - a niggle sufficient to enter my dream but not enough to wake me up.

6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)

I am starting this challenge in which I am hoping to be able to strive into a better living health style as well as bring the family into some healthy changes. I'm new to the MFP and such My goal is to hit 100 miles for April between walking, brisk walking, as well as running. Starting at the bottom and working my way up. My goal for the end of the year is to be in a healthier state than what I was at the start of this year. Not just for my self but for my family as well. Eating healthier and being more active are some of the steps to achieve that goal. Since I am starting mid month, i'm a little behind on hitting that goal at the end of April. A lot can be done in 17 days.

Regarding race pacing, I PR’d at my last half marathon race and I ran really even splits.
I think what helped was going out in a slightly slower corral. I probably should have been in corral 3 (that’s where the 2 hour pacer was) but ended up in corral 5. I set out with the crowd feeling pretty comfortable though a bit fast. Everyone goes out too fast even in corral 5, but that ended up being a great pace for me. I stayed at that pace for 13 miles. I had no extra at the end so I feel like it was a great race.

Planned for a 6 miler today but woke up late (for me) and didn’t feel great. I went out anyway but only did 4, better than nothing. Hopefully get a longer one in on Tuesday.5

Ran to the one hill close to me that I don't have to drive to. It is a brutal hill (don't know the % grade) and clearly I have not been running hills in a while and it showed! Most embarrassing part was there was a guy walking up the hill behind us and when I paused to catch my breath he passed me WALKING! I made a comment to him about powering up the hill like it was nothing and he said he walks it all the time and well I haven't run a hill of really any size in probably 8 months or more. I did end up running the opposite, maybe not quite as steep side, twice because I went back down to talk to a couple that also has a Vizsla they were walking. Hobbes enjoyed the visit too even if their dog wasn't too interested in him 😁 We got it done and got in all the miles I wanted and then some (plan was for 8-9 hilly miles) and I was not dieing the last 4 miles home. I do now know I can finish that HM in May even if it is slow, slow, slow and I end up walking the hills. I will be going back to conquer this hill again and be able once again to run all the way to the top without walking or stopping.
Tomorrow we head out on a road trip for about a week. My running close were set out and packed first and I have all contingencies covered as it could be pretty warm (AZ) or cold (NM) when I get out to run. I am looking forward to running in some new places with new sights to see!

Walking hills can be an acceptable strategy, and sometimes even makes more sense than running. In a trail half marathon I did last year, I was definitely passing people who were running up hills while I was doing this kind of power-hike/skipping/walking thing. I experimented with it and found it harder to run on steep hills, and I wasn't going much faster.5 -

bahaha. Ummm I havent shaved my legs in over a year I think. Mostly due to CBB (cant be bothered), though I have very light fine hair on my legs so most people dont even notice. Whats a titi?1 -
Wow, very impressive pacing for your HM @zdyb23456.
12.3 miles this afternoon. Tried a new app on my watch. Going to Houston next weekend, and got lost on the trails there. So downloaded a turn-by-turn directions app and wanted to test it out. It was good showing where to go, but had ZERO running metrics. So I was running totally blind (I know, ironic right?) with regards to any running stats. Actually was kind of freeing. So I feel confident that I won't get lost next week.

Today I got to run 4.73 miles around my former home lake, now lake number two in terms of proximity to home. It was glorious. I have officially hit all of my goals for the week: 108 of 100 minutes of running, 179 of 145 minutes of strength training, 252 of 210 minutes moderate exercise, and 112 of 100 minutes of flexibility/mobility work. Next week the running goal goes up to 125 minutes, but at this point I'm back to watching miles more than minutes anyhow.
It feels great to be running again - this is the furthest I've run in a couple of months - but I am especially proud of meeting my flexibility/mobility goal - I’ve started digging into the 15 minute and under archives of Yoga With Adrienne and am really enjoying it. I've had a bad habit of letting my rest days be almost zero activity and I'm trying to get away from that as a regular practice.
Yesterday I made it to a Saturday strength class for the first time since I joined the gym 3 months ago. I opted out of leaving the house during The Weather in the middle of the week, so needed to make up a class to meet my goal of three classes a week. My track record for make-up classes on the weekend was zero so far, but no more! We did a circuit that included back squats, walking lunges, and yanking a sled attached to a giant rope across the gym, which was a lot of fun. There was also a lady there who looked like if Elsa from Frozen was a buff grandma, which was awesome. There are a decent number of older women who go to the gym which makes me happy. I aspire to be a buff older woman one day.
4/1 Rest
4/2 Strength class, ran/walked 1.13 miles

I'm not sure how you got onto shaving, @Elise4270 (did you misread oversharing? or is talking about shaving habits oversharing?), but I gave up shaving years ago along with wearing makeup. It's pointless (unless it brings you pleasure, in which case, you do you) and time-consuming and so there.5 -

Today's run was fantastic! Yesterday was stormy/rainy and cold all day. And I had a migrane so I spent most of the day on the couch. Today could not have been prettier and I felt great. It was pretty chilly this morning. I had to run early since I had to be at church early today to play handbells and I didn't want to wait until afternoon to run. I was so glad I got up and ran as the sun was rising. Everything looked so fresh. There was still a lot of water around and it the sky was a perfect blue. The light green of all the newly budding trees was just gorgeous. I saw 2 deer in the same place that I saw deer last week. I just really enjoyed the run. I wish they could all be that fun.
Good luck at Boston tomorrow @lporter229! Do we have anyone else running tomorrow? I feel like I'm missing someone.

@MegaMooseEsq yes, I was oversharing my shaving habits. It brings me no pleasure to shave or be shaved. It feels so horrible and irritates my skin.
@Avidkeo ohh my knees have a beard. Not light and barely noticeable here. A “titi” was just an alternate spelling to titty, because I didn’t want mfp to kitten it and make it sound worse than it was. Haha!3 -

I assumed it was an "overshare" which i'm not sure exists here lol.
I also gave up wearing makeup years ago, am so glad I work in an industry I dont have to. One of my stresses for this upcoming job interview - to makeup or not. I do own a miscara and lipstick for the odd time I want to, so am thinking Ill wear those. I'm being myself.4 -

I don’t do make up either. Remembering to use lotion is about as far as i go. My ears are barely pierced, most earrings won’t fit, so I abandoned that too. I do have a metal allergy (gold, nickel) so earrings just make my ears red. Definitely don’t do dresses either. How is being half neked okay? Ugh. As predicted, I spent most of the day reclined on the couch or in bed and it was great. I kept debating going for a run before it rained, but I was way too lazy and the rain came. So I gave up that effort for a while. I finally felt like I should do something with myself, so headed to the gym and ran and then did some assisted pull-ups, dips, and pushups.
For the first time, I watched a movie while running on the treadmill and it worked pretty well to keep me going. I watched Free Solo on the plane yesterday and got really into it, so I watched The Dawn Wall today while running and it was also really good. I'm inspired to do some more rock climbing after all of that. I mean, nothing remotely crazy, but regular people rock climbing.

Aw, I love dresses (though I usually wear shorts or leggings underneath). To paraphrase the immortal words of JK Rowlings, there's nothing like a healthy breeze 'round the privates!4 -

@elise4270 - I don't shave either but I get my legs 'sugared' - kind of like waxing but much more natural and it pulls the hair in the direction of growth. Basically now I have just very fine hair on my legs now. When I shaved and or waxed my legs were always red and irritated. The sugaring doesn't do that because it is just sugar...
Also no makeup since I have worked from home for years. I did have some for when I had to travel and interact with clients. Now rarely if ever, I even got my hair cut short so I don't need to fuss much with it either - just let it curl up on its own.3 -
Boston! That weather looks awful. @BeeerRunner is also there. Bib #22270. She doesn't do this challenge anymore, but this is where I met her and she is still active with her MFP account.
I went to the beach on Sunday and had planned a run. Forget about it. I only went 1.25 and that was tough. We went South of New Smyrna where you can't drive on the beach and I can attest you can't run either. Not much beach and too soft for running. Even walking it was tough!
Only 3 days of school this week!

4/3 - 5 miles
4/4 - strength training / upper

4/11 - 2.5 miles - cut short due to left glute
4/12 - strength training -legs and abs
4/13 - 45 miles cycling

I still haven't figured out what I am going to wear, am full of doubt from my "lighter load" training plan, and still nursing both of my hamstrings along. I guess I will just have to take what comes my way and hope for the best. If anyone besides me enjoys spending their Patriots Day at work stalking Boston marathon participants, my bib number is 20895. I am not making any guarantees on time (see above) but if start time conditions are good, my plan is to shoot for a 3:45. If it's cold, windy and rainy, my goal will be to shoot for crossing the finish line. Wish me luck...
Best of luck @lporter229!
Does anyone know what wave she’s starting in?2 -

I tried a hands-free leash with our 95 pound labrador a few years back after a friend recommended one. On one of our runs the dog spotted a lizard and took off chasing it at full speed, dragging me after her. I landed on my tailbone, my head smacked against the sidewalk, and I was lying there on the ground dazed for a second before realizing I was staring up at the sky. Once I figured out I wasn't terribly hurt I had to limp home and nervously kept feeling the back of my shorts to make sure the fabric wasn't ripped and revealing my bruised backside.
Ouch! I'm glad you weren't terribly hurt by that. My 8 year old son was pulled across the street by our lab mix many years ago and got a good case of road rash. Kira is less than half their size at about 40 pounds and luckily I noticed the rabbit and was prepared for her pull. Plus, the leash I use when hands-free is a bungie which seems to help her to NOT pull better than our non-bungie leash.
This weekend the dogs and I walked a couple miles each morning. After breakfast and a nap, I ran 4 miles yesterday morning with my new Wunjo backpack, just to test it out. I stopped once to let out as much air as I could, then it stopped sloshing around with every step and was great. I also tried out a couple adjustments to my form, including leaning forward from my ankles. This resulted in running much faster - and easier. My heart rate was under 140 for the first time ever.... until just shy of a mile when it shot up. I slowed down for a couple seconds then decided to finish that first mile fast anyway, stopped to catch my breath and continued for 3 more miles. I was still running too hard so decided to take walking breaks to keep things a little easier. That first mile Strava shows as my best half mile effort at 4:48, and 1k at 6:01 and a record time on a hill segment (I'm not last anymore!). Garmin showed my fastest mile 10:17 (not sure why Strava didn't agree... still has me at a minute slower).
Today's a rest day. This week I need to focus on slowing down again. Easy runs.
Good luck today @lporter229!4 -
6km Westbrook Shorty on Sunday Morning. When you get involved in a conversation and then realize you have walked a full km you know your average pace will be very slow. We have had 3 Dog Incidents already this spring - 1 dog bite ( minor physical injuries, psychological a little bigger and she has dogs ) , 2 dogs have received pepper spray. So it was a very intense conversation. The consensus - even from the dog owners - is once the dog leaves private property and comes at you on public property they are being over aggressive and pepper spray is appropriate. It seems when ever some one moves to a new property or gets a new dog the dog is trying to mark/define his new territory and becomes aggressive. A good dog owner can quickly shut that down with a little training and time with the dog.I assumed it was an "overshare" which i'm not sure exists here lol.
@Avidkeo You are right Overshare does not exist when it comes to runners - probably the same for other athletic groups.8
