Ouch, lots of injuries in this AM's update. Hugs and fast recovery all around!
Yesterday was a well-needed rest day for me. My glutes were happy with the break, but in the evening I started having really weird sort-of-cramps in my left shin or calf (*shakes fist at the left side of my body*) while I was sitting down. I make sure to get up and move around every hour or two at most, so I don't think that was it - I've never felt anything quite like it before. I got a couple of good walks in without any problems, but then lying in bed the same shooting intermittent pain had moved to my hip. I ended up taking a couple of IB so I could sleep, but I worry that I've been taking too much of that stuff recently.
Strength class today - I'd planned on running there but am not sure right now. I haven't felt any pain this morning but don't want to push it. Also it's pouring rain, but it's warmish so I don't actually mind the idea of running in it. I'm not sure I'd want to do an hour of weight-lifting in soaking wet clothes, though, so I'm going to have to figure that out.6 -
4 miles on the bike last night. It wasn't much of a workout though. I brought Kody along so I couldn't go very fast. It was a tempo run for him and a slow roll for me. I wanted to drop him off and keep going but I got a late start and there was no more daylight left.
After work last night I stopped by the local running store and ended up with a pair of Salomon Sense Max 2. Only a 6mm drop but the in-stock selection in my size was slim and that was the best option. You know that saying, nothing new on race day? Well I might be attempting a 50 mile race with shoes I've never run in, because when I do start running this weekend, it will be flat paved areas so as not to aggravate my Achilles. I have mapped out the race, from aid station to aid station and came up with goal paces for each section, taking into account the vertical gain, which will allow me to finish in 13hr:15m, or 45 minutes before cutoff, so I'll have some buffer. All just a guess at this point. I'm going to walk as much as possible. Overall pace needs to be 16:48 which sounds like a lot, but there is 8700 feet of elevation gain and loss on the course.
I keep getting twinges of very slight pain in my Achilles throughout the day so I'm not sure how much I'm recovering or how long I'll be able to go next weekend. I certainly don't have much optimism about the race, but I'll start and I'll go as long as I can without doing more damage, be it one mile or fifty. Though it is my A race for the year, I have a 50K three weeks after that which is also important to me and I don't want to screw that up.
My new shoes are pretty plain. It's kind of funny, when I started running I didn't want bright flashy shoes. Now I'm disappointed that these are so boring.
12 -
@7lenny7 those aren't boring shoes - look at the Louboutin soles on them!!!!! (ok, not QUITE the same colour......)1

@7lenny7 I try to avoid the airport area when possible, but the A&R does have great ribs! The place we went on Sunday is The One and Only BBQ, and the ‘cue there is only so-so, but they are convenient to where we run and have sweet potato fries which I love. Also the owner is a runner! I got to know her while standing in line for pickup at St Jude.
Some of the best Memphis bbq is found at unlicensed food trucks and on street corners around town during the summer. It’s almost food truck season again! Thanks to the magic cleansing power of fire, bbq is one of the safer things to eat out of a food truck, as long as you keep an eye on how the slaw is being stored.
Yesterday we walked 3.5 miles at the Greenway. It was in the mid 80s. I’m going to regret not being able to run during this transitional weather when it gets into the 100s and I’m not adapted. I need to start adding some higher intensity cardio soon, going to try exercise bike with a support sleeve on my ankle and see if it feels okay.4 -
@7lenny7 I like the shoes! Salomon has spoiled me as far as lacing systems are concerned.0
-
@shanaber - love that pic of Hobbes in front of the window, lol. The rest are good too!
Apparently I needed to sleep in today. I'm working on a program and sometimes I get addicted to such things. So I stayed up too late last night but left my alarm for 4:10. I awoke to my husband shaking me and he said "your alarm has been going off for 20 minutes and I couldn't wake you up!" So I set it for 5:30 and missed my run today, grrr.
I had a double workout yesterday and the strength training was really intense, so probably good to rest legs anyway.
But I will want to do something when I get home!

Today's 5.04 mile run was windy, hot and humid. It was only 70F so I guess it wasn't really that hot, but it felt hot. It was a good run though. I heard lots of dogs barking, but they were all in their yards. Except for 2 little dogs that kind of ran out to the road and circled around my feet while their owner stood on the porch hollering at them. I don't know why people think it is ok to just open your front door and let your dogs out. They seem to do that a lot with little dogs. At least someone was out on the porch watching them and they weren't really a threat to me. It just annoys me when people are bad dog owners.
Other than that it was a good run. I did a Zombies Run supply run and turned on the zombie chases, so I'm counting that as speed work. LOL I did outrun all the zombies so I did have some speedy intervals. I'm really anxious for the new season to come out.

Uh. Distal oblique fibial fracture. Your friend get a pin, cast or Halo? Not weight bearing bone... So I'm a guess a walking boot. Man that gotta hurt! (Oh yes, practice opportunity 🤓 did I get a 100?. I had a dream I was kicked out of school for cheating. What? So not in my nature).
@Elise4270 Walking Boot, lots of swelling even after a week and yes I believe you got 100%. Although I never actually asked what the "official" description was.

So stomach feeling much better than yesterday I went out for a 2.5 mile jog. Definitely felt dehydrated and legs a bit wobbly but ok.10

Returning today to a hectic day at work after being out, so I am still working on a race report, but I thought I would share this. Adidas did these cool customized videos for the runners at Boston. You can see me at the 15K shot towards the middle of the road. At the 21 mile mark I am just in front of the blind runner checking my Garmin as I cross the mat (of course) and I am hobbling across the finish line at the far right of that shot. I am a mess in all of these photos because I dumped so many cups of water on my head. I will post a full report with some photos as soon as I can.

Just getting back from a trip. Ran a couple times, but nothing worth mentioning... need get back on track. Probably gained 157.3 pounds. However, when I left, this tree was bare...
Seems it gained some wieght too
100s of posts came while I was gone. I tried to read them all. Saw our peeps did well at Boston! Way to represent! Hope everyone else is well, should be back in the running saddle soon. I think.12 -
Today I got to run 1.87 miles home from the gym in fairly heavy rain. It was great. And thanks to my trusty long-brimmed hat, my glasses and face stayed mostly dry. I don’t know what it is about a dry face to make me feel better even though everything else is soaking, but I’ll take it.
The twinges and aches and whatnot seem to be quiet right now. I’ve recently started therapy to work on some anxiety issues related to dealing with change, so maybe that will also help deal with the fear that the next time my hip hurts it will never stop and I'll have to quit running and gain back all the weight I lost. I've only been to a couple sessions so far but the second one was really good, so I'm hoping this person will work out. I had some trouble meshing with the last therapist I met with and things ended badly with the one before that.
The only thing that's giving me a little pause with this new therapist is the fact that she seems to be around my age (mid 30s), and I'm still not used to the idea that people around my age can easily be 10-15 years established in a career. It didn't work out for me that way, that's for sure. Anyhow, here's to self-improvement!

I probably could have done more but the road was quite busy and I think my neighbors will think I've really lost the plot out running at 10pm when it was a lovely long day. I was just really busy all day and time beat me.

@PastorVincent I love the tree!
Here is my Japanese weeping cherry blossom
It did not flower last year, so it seems doubly beautiful to me this year.

A gorgeous and perfect running day today at 60 degrees with lovely sunshine! I escaped work slightly early and headed out to run around campus. All the students were out on the quad and frat/sorority house lawns to take advantage of the sun. I accidentally found myself heading up one of the major hills of the upcoming Mountain Goat run so I'll count that as extra credit towards my training run this weekend. Or really, it should be a make-up for missing last week's training run I guess. Despite the hills, it was an enjoyable run. Let's have more of this awesome spring weather please! (Note - forecast not sounding like it agrees with me).
@lporter229 cool video they made for you! Can't wait to hear your race report. Congrats again on an awesome race!5 -
Did speed work tonight. Supposed to be 800 meter repeats at 5k pace. Since I don't have a track, it's a rough estimate on the same streets through my neighborhood. Rough speed work is better than no speed work I guess.
I know it's not the typical shoe pic, but I got new climbing shoes! I LOVE THEM!! Between running and climbing I spend a ridiculous amount of money on shoes, but it makes me so happy every time I get a new pair!

Busy week, but did 4.72 miles today. Did not feel good, partly because it is warming up, and partly because I haven't run since the marathon on Sat., and partly because it has been a busy week and I am tired. Anyway, I'm hoping the 50K on Sat. feels better.

I finally took some time for myself and ran 5k today. I’m a little bit rusty and had to walk a lot, but it was marvelous because it was my first run outside in weeks! I can’t find my last running update post on here, but since I don’t have a number goal, whatever 😂13
-
Got a nice sunny day with temp in the 60s F this afternoon. Still no running, but I got the oil changed in the snowblower and lawnmower, and mowed the lawn for the first time. Then I needed to retreat inside and put my foot back in the boot for support.
There is progress. But I don't anticipate overshooting my April goal of zero running miles.10 -
Aww I love the flowering trees! All of ours are past flowering. We have a Japanese plum that’s yummy, but the prettiest is the sand cherry. Dh said it need cut back but I don’t want to cut it back. And it’s already loaded with cherries. What do you think? Maybe trim it later? Guess I could look it up or ask the nursery when to trim it.
6 -
@Elise4270 I dunno much about trees, but that one does look like it needs to be trimmed to protect the house. Ask an expert though.1

Thanks. I suppose I could trim it to match the arch of the front window....
ETA the all knowing internet says wait until after thanksgiving.1 -
@elise4270 - from what I recall for most fruit trees except maybe citrus you want to wait until they go dormant and then trim them, After Thanksgiving sound about right but it could be earlier depending on how cold it gets and when. I am always wanting to trim the citrus trees but they always have blossoms or fruit and never go dormant so who knows...1

I think dormant trees here would be... Um... Wow, funny something you've experienced frequently can not be recalled. Maybe mid December. I think Thanksgiving the leaves are just dropping. Maybe.
I have a patio peach, that is inedable. It looks like two trees now. I did find on the internet that it's a "sucker". It a whole nother tree but I may trim it too come time. We lost our fig tree to some beetles that bore in it. Dang it.0 -

Oh no! Surgery?? The medial ligaments have been ruptured with that shift but it might be borderline.
@elise4270 it's a beautiful pic! I'm guessing they are on a fairly state of the art DR system with those particular exposure factor.0 -
I'm exhausted! The first day of my long long weekend, I went for a 10k hilly run first thing, then moved stuff out of the house to make it ready for people to view over the weekend. Then got called into work, then cleaned and baked a cake for my oldests impending birthday (5 on Monday)! Now finally have a chance to try catch up with you lot haha.
Pick from my favourite lookout in the middle of my 10k run. That gives me 88/150k. Need to find another 25 or so by Monday.9 -

Doesn't seem like 15-30 sec/mi would make such a difference in perceived effort, but it really does. Today was really easy, but only about :20/mi slower than last couple of runs that were comfortably hard. Toe felt fine.

@Elise4270 The captions on your photo made me laugh! Thanks. I don't know about trimming trees either, but agree with the almighty internet that waiting until they are dormant is probably the best idea.
@Avidkeo and @Elise4270 I love how you are both so excited about x-rays and "shop talk" about the equipment they were taken on, etc. Loving what you do for a living makes life so much easier.
@Avidkeo Looks like you have a lovely place to go for a run.3
