Eating and drinking my way through Portland. We'll call it carb loading.
Some highlights were Chinese black tea and steam buns at the Chinese garden, pork belly bahn mi sandwich, Deschutes brewery, Burmese glass noodle soup, creme brulee cream donut with a shot of Cointreau INside the donut, and beignets. All topped off by a $28 pour of a hard to find bourbon.
Not bad for the first day here.
I do not believe I have ever tried bourbon, and at "$28 pour" (I assume that is like a cup? serving?) it is not likely I ever will. Wow!0 -

I’ve never had bourbon0 -
@PastorVincent I think instead of running you should go see someone about your back in your 3 hour "down time." Hopefully it is just a muscle pull that will heal quickly.0

That was for 2 ounces, neat. It was Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, a very limited bottling which I've never found in a liquor store. I've heard people who do find it will often resell it for $300 or more. I wasn't going to get it but I mentioned that it was my favorite and my brother-in-law insisted on buying it for me. Ummm, OK.
They had other selections as low as $6 so they aren't all expensive.3 -

Too soon for a doctor visit. Probably be better in a couple of days. Just gotta grin and bear (or is it bare?) it for now.1 -

I think you and my husband would get along fabulously. I am embarrassed to say how much he spends on " hard to find" bourbons. When we were in Boston, he picked up two bottles of Sazarac Rye and a bottle of Weller 107 that were collecting dust in a liquor store. Neither one of those bourbons stays very long on the shelf around here and he got them at their normal cost. Apparently bourbon is not as popular in the northeast as it is in the midwest and south.
BTW, @7lenny7 , if I haven't already told you, good luck on your race this weekend! I will do a virtual bourbon toast for you when you finish!7 -
Note to self: remember to pack my spare gym towel in my running bag when there's a good chance it's gonna pour on your lunch run in the middle of the workday Gave the automatic paper towel dispenser in the restroom a bit of a workout, lol. Shoes and socks are 110% soaked through, guess I'll be wearing my trail shoes for tomorrow's 5k at the zoo. Whoops!

8.5 mile run tonight, my second long run. I never thought I’d enjoy them, especially alone but actually it’s ok. Except ....and I apologise for the TMI - runners trots! I have recently been diagnosed with ibs. I am trying to eliminate things and find out what helps but it’s early days. Last long run I got home ok but then literally spent most of the next hour in the loo. Tonight I was 5 miles out when the cramps started. There was no facilities anywhere near by, for a few minutes I thought I might have to ring hubby but I walked a while and it eased. I was just walking in about 1/4 mile from home when they came again much more urgent, I just made it into the loo! Obviously this is a concern for the half marathon, any advice. I hadn’t eaten anything unusual. I had a bowl of soup about an hour before setting off.

@samthepanda look up a low FODMAP diet. It is pretty new, but is looking very promising to treat IBS and has good clinical (but early, so not a lot) research behind it.
These people are like the experts on it:
https://www.monashfodmap.com/ibs-central/i-have-ibs/starting-the-low-fodmap-diet/
But NIH and others have info too.

Still trying to catch up on posts. No runs over the weekend due to visiting my family on Easter and preparing to test this week.2 -
@ereck44 Good Luck on the test! Have a safe trip!
Thanks @Elise4270. I sat for 2.5 hours taking a test which had 150 questions. I successfully answered 99 questions and sadly 6 questions shy of passing.
I will retake the test in September.
My weekend with my family was wonderful and although I did take study materials, I did not open the book. I wouldn't have done anything differently. Family is definitely more important in my estimation.

Oh man! So in the 2and half hours since the run stomach has gone into overdrive! I went in the bath after putting daughter to bed. I was really cold by then so I maybe got it a bit hot but a few minutes after I got out I felt really ill. Felt so sick, couldn’t lift my head from between my knees without feeling I was going to pass out, dripping so much sweat it was like I was back in the bath! Now feel very cold, but little better. Trying to nibble a ginger biscuit and get some fluid in. Maybe I’m not cut out for distance.6

Ohh fellow IBSer! I had to do an elimination diet to figure mine out. I thought gluten was a problem but turned out to be mostly soy that is nearly always in the gluten containing food. It also gives me a migraine, but trots in 20 minutes!
Ibuprofen is #2 on my no-no runs list.
#3 not eating, then eating or drinking anything. Soup? Ya my guts just have that dumping syndrome reaction.
#4 dairy. no milk, and yogurt maybe once a week.
#5 canned tomatoes. I can do the expensive San Marzano tomatos fine.
Do you have your gallbladder? It could be the culprit, or the culprit if you don’t have it. I went to my doc and said “I really want to renew my Y membership so I can swim, but I am afraid to get in the poo-l”. He gave me a script, 2 really and said get on a good probiotic (which gave me poos. Then he gave me an antibiotic to go with the probiotic. Perfect). I don’t usually need any of them anymore, but when dh and I were dating, it was sad. Always “BATHROOM!” Horrible when you make your date stop 4-5 times to have bile-arrhea. I have no gallbladder. But ya know I never get constipated, or if I do, just put some half and half in my coffee.
ETA- HM advice. Grab some Imodium. Should put a stop to it. I use the little gel tablets. You can even take one with you on the run in case the first one wears off. I get rather dehydrated and have a no run rule if I’ve been in the bathroom x times that day. So maybe consider some electrolytes too.3 -

I did a short, easy 2 mile run today on the treadmill. I did a lot of coughing during the run, but it actually seemed to feel pretty good somehow. I didn't want to push too hard. The cough syrup that was supposed to "knock me out" so I can sleep actually made me fidgety and I didn't get to sleep until 2am last night. We'll see how tonight goes. On the upside, I have felt better today and had more energy. The coughing, with a little peeing, is annoying though.7

I just realized- I am only 8 days out from the Pittsburgh Marathon! Really need my back to heal quickly. 😐12

5 miles walking on trails at WC Johnson park. Still no running, although I jogged about 50 paces without pain, I still feel pulling in my Achilles’ tendon. It no longer hurts when walking and is starting not to hurt when bouncing - getting better very slowly.
Weather was perfect. When we crossed the bridge into the wetlands area on the boardwalk I said to my husband, “It’s so pretty out, I bet the snakes love this weather. Imma see if I can spot a snake!” And I leaned out and looked down and saw this:
How many water moccasins did you spot? Check the next spoiler for a better view!8 -

Good luck on your 50K @7lenny7! You are a VERY brave man for basically going from couch to 50K after your injury. And to use all that new equipment! I wish you the very best.
K?
M!
Thanks!
Just a bit of prep then off to bed. I still have to figure out what time to get up. It's 1h20m to the race and I want to get there around 5am.
@lporter229, I have four or five bottles of Weller 107 in my cabinet at home and can find Sazerac rye for $28 at our local liquor store (if that's the Saz you're talking about). Yesterday I found two bottles of Blanton's to take home with me. I love, love, love bourbon.6 -
Today's themes were waterfalls and tulips. And beer.10

Hey all. No running for me today. Had a mild cold and I thought it was better to not run. I'm only 7k behind my goal so hoping to get it tomorrow... But huge news
Just found out today that a new private radiology practice is opening in the town we are moving to, and they have just put the advert out looking for staff. There are not many radiographers at the moment looking for work so it's really a job seekers market right now.
I got in touch with the manager today (it's Saturday) and quickly arranged a meet up for Monday, the day before my interview with the public hospital. So it's looking good for me to have my pick of jobs... In fact I'm highly likely to get notification of both by the end of next week. So exciting.
And my Mum, who is also a radiographer, has applied as well. She currently lives in a different city again but is keen to move to our new town to be near us, so that's pretty cool.
Big BIG changes afoot.11 -
@amymoreorless It probably won't kill you but you might want to go at a very modest pace for the first one so you save the body for the 2nd one. Just think of it as an Ultra Race with a sleep in a comfortable bed.PastorVincent wrote: »UGH! I am such an old-fart. I pulled a muscle SLEEPING. AGAIN. No run for a day or three probably. Good thing I am not training for a Marathon followed by a 50k, right? #grumble
@PastorVincent Aw Maturity - Not as great as we think when we are younger-ish.
If you combined that with getting out of bed on the wrong side you would have been in a lot more discomfort.
@Avidkeo and @ContraryMaryMary ANZAC - We have a Town/Hamlet here in Alberta named after the ANZAC group that was posted here during WW2. If I remember my history right . They were involved in the construction of a Railway line, Army base and in the construction of an early warning Radar on Stony Mountain that was never completed due to the Japaneses surrender. That’s why we have a hug button 😉, so no one gets their nose punched. 🧘🏽♀️
@7lenny7 at $28.00 per pour you let the bourbon see the Ice cube(s) but never touch them.
Some like a frozen glass, some room temp so you get all the vapour's to inhale.
Not really a Bourbon person - didn't grow up with it. More of a Rye or Scotch fan. BTW Canadian Club Rye is considered to be Swill that you leave in the store by most Canadians.
Well it wasn't a run but I am going to count it to my monthly distance since it was a walk into a Running Trail for maintenance ( carrying a 50lb back pack ) at a creek crossing. It's only about 6ft across but also 4-6ft deep so a real risk of injury if you slip while trying to jump it. So we walked in and built a bridge using as much natural/local wood as possible for the stringers over the creek. I had all the cross members for the deck in my bag - pre-cut to 22 inchs. Then we continued on to a few other areas that needed some work. Can you tell from the spoiler where we did most of the work? also if you look at the pace you can see approximately where we stopped to do repairs.

Thanks for the advise Elise. Definitely won’t be eating soup again before a run. Will try another long run mid week with some Imodium beforehand. If it happens again, I think I may have to give the HM a miss as can’t risk it.2 -
@Avidkeo YAY!!!!!!
@7lenny7 good luck on your 'little jog' ;-)
@PastorVincent ouch, sending healing vibes
@samthepanda hope the Imodium thing works and you don't have to miss the race. It really does seem to be an individual trial and error thing for runner's tummy issues. My pre-run routine is get up, have a cup of coffee, eat a banana, visit the bathroom, have another coffee, run, come home, have breakfast. Anything else upsets my innards. Yet a lot of people have to avoid coffee like the plague. We are all a mystery in our own way!
I got out this morning for 4.5 miles, my longest run since post-HM injury back in December. By the last 10 minutes I was really beating myself up about how ridiculously tough it was feeling considering 5 months ago that distance was just a run of the mill weekday run. Only afterwards when I looked at the data did I realise rather than my nice slow easy long run pace, I was going around 1 minute per kilometre faster, almost at mh HM race pace in fact. D'OH! No wonder things feel sore and tight now, think I'll be hobbling again tomorrow. Definitely not a good idea a week after a 100-ish mile pilgrimage. I have a feeling I'm in for a telling off from the evil physio on Thursday!
Next weekend marks the end of the 8km training plan I've been following after completing c25k. After that, I start a Hal Higdon 15km one. Then I hope to spend a few weeks spreading the total weekly mileage from the end of that out over 4 runs instead of 3 before starting an HM plan in preparation for my local HM on the 3rd of November. Happy now I have my runs planned, do like a pretty colourful spreadsheet lol.
Oh and on the topic of the virtual run, I also really like the sound of the Hug a Runner thing. Let's do it! It's a real shame those of us doing Run the Year didn't sign up a bit sooner, apparently everyone who signed up in November gets automatic entry into that as well. We know now for next year!

Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
So the unthinkable has reared its ugly head - back spasms. Hurt so bad I can hardly stand up. Looks like I might be done for the month.
@7lenny7 Have a great run. Save a little something for the end.

6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)

@rheddmobile Yikes. Water moccasins can be deadly. I'm glad you were a safe distance away. I thought I saw a 4th in the water, but guess it was just a stick.
@7lenny7 The waterfalls look fantastic. The flowers are simply amazing! Good luck today!
@Avidkeo Sorry you aren't feeling well. Hope you are better today. GREAT news about the jobs! Sounds like things are falling in place for you!
@Tramboman Sorry about your back. Hope it gets better soon!
