WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2019

Here we are beginning another new month--spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall in the Southern Hemisphere. A new month for me is a chance to make a fresh start on projects and new behaviours that I want to add to my life. It's also a time to discard attitudes and behaviours that aren't working for me.
If you made any goals, plans, or resolutions for March, how did you do?
Do you have any goals, plans, or resolutions for April that you'd like to share?
Traveling the weight loss journey with supportive and encouraging companions has added to my life for several years. I hope you will find something from this thread that will help you improve your life.
Be sure to bookmark this thread so you can find it again and sign your posts with a name or nickname and a location to make it more personal and make responding easier.

March Resolutions (with end of the month comments)
*daily meditation (almost every day)
*SWSY twice a week (only a few times this month)
April Resolutions
*daily meditation
*SWSY twice a week
My word for 2019 is "pause".
The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want the MOST for what they want at the MOMENT.

Sounds like an interesting challenge.......I nailed my goals for March. I got back in the habit of recording food, increasing my cardio exercise to 3x week, and started journaling again.
April should be about the same with a trip to Maine in there.
Ideally, I would like to lose how much weight MFP says I can lose (20 pounds) but that's a bit ridiculous, so I'll stick with my goal of 6-8, so I don't get disappointed and give up, again!
OH! I am 59, so yea, 6-8 is much more realistic.12 -
Barbie Thanks for the April thread!
Heather You were going to buy what and sausages? MFP made whatever it was into a *kitten*. LOL.

Thanks for reminding me to set goals. I made a commitment this week to stay focused, be honest and log everything I eat and get moving! I should be able to lose 6-8 pounds this month, too. I am 66 years old so that is realistic for me. I’ve been using MFP for almost a year. I have lost 12 pounds in that time. I know if I stay focused I can do a lot better than that!10

Was it David Attenboroughs Tasmania? If so, we watched it back in January and liked it.

Hi Gals,
Happy April! Thanks Barbie for getting us started.
I spent 3 hours with my nephew yesterday, talked about college, he’s been going to a 2 year community or jr. college and will graduate in June then off to finish his BA at a 4 year, he’s going to my alma mater, I’m so pleased! I think he’ll enjoy it.
My brother who is dying is his Dad, and we talked about that, and what is important to my nephew. My family doesn’t do funerals, celebrations of life or any thing else – you die, your gone, you will be barely spoken of again – this is not a healthy system. He and I have talked about it, he has had some friends die, and his half brother’s grandmother, so he has attended “normal” funerals. So he wanted to know a few things about how we could do what he thought would be helpful. The challenge will be that I have a sister who is completely divorced from the family, I last saw her 26 years ago and she refuses to take calls or emails, my mom really wants her to come out, my nephew doesn’t want to meet her. I told him I would do what I can; I hope that if she comes it is to the graveside family only thing and not to the celebration of life. I’ve thought about talking to Mom about this, but think I’ll wait, as if she refuses to come no one has to be bothered about it.
We also talked about his upcoming 21st birthday, I told him the priority was to not get in a car with anyone who was drinking and to have folks around who would look out for him. (21 is the legal drinking age in CA)

Thank you Barbie, for setting up this thread again. I keep setting my goal at just logging my food. Have not yet done so. Maybe April will be the month that it happens.... I am going to try! I should channel Yoda "There is no try, just do!" lol
My weight has been holding steady for the past two weeks, I guess that's good as I'm not gaining, but I would prefer to be losing, so apparently need to change something!
We are enjoying the lovely weather that we are currently having. We have run out of landscape ties for our backyard project, so I have booked a rental truck (just a pickup) to go back to Home Depot and get more. Will also get more dirt while we're at it. Hopefully will be able to get enough to finish the project this time. Hubby has measured and calculated, so..... ever hopeful! It will look so nice when it's finished! Of course, the hard work for me starts after he has built the "planter", I have to go thru several smaller planters and re-distribute the bulbs that are in all of them. When we moved a few years ago, I just stuck bulbs in whatever we could take with us, I did a little bit of planting, but didn't have enough planters and kept buying bulbs (duh!) and just stuffing them in wherever I could. Now I would like to get some organization and some summer blooming plants as once spring is done, so are the flowers. Need some shade loving plants, I've found a few, going to get a bleeding heart and a hellebore. I also have a hydrangea that I will move into the backyard, there are a few brighter areas where it should do fairly well. That's my next 3 or 4 weeks planned out for me! On the bright side, doing all this should keep me from eating! I also need to get some work done in the flower beds in our complex, the weeds have definitely taken over!
Hugs to those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

Yes, Machka, it was his narration. Don’t think the project or filming was under his aegis. I love his voice though.
Karen - it was f.a.g.g.o.t.s  A pre-cooked small meat and offal parcel wrapped in sheep's caul. Delicious! You heat them up in onion gravy. Originally poor people's food. Apparently this upmarket deli makes the best ones. Ditto the fancy sausages.
Reading, 'Outrunning The Demons' - a book about how running helps with mental health and addiction. My son has a hard copy, mine is on Kindle.
Boob squeeze today. My DH is not inclined to drop me off there. :grumble: I think I will get a taxi there and a bus back.

MFP doing strange things, I cant bookmark April thread, it says I need javascript enabled???
BARBIE thanks for new thread
HEATHER don't you just hate that procedure
MACHKA went to my sock knitting group on Saturday and the organiser was Australian from Tasmania. Nice group of ladies and managed after a couple of false starts to get a sock going
We've had a lovely weekend weatherwise but forecast for this week is not good getting cold again

Belated Happy Birthday, Viv!
Thank you Barbie for keeping us going.
Michele your Bugs Bunny made me smile!
Dana thought of your 93 pecan trees as I started picking up sticks on the cistern path. Doing just a little bit at a time, will be a project like painting the Golden Gate Bridge :{ but so enjoyed the blue sky and sunshine, Rain forecast for the next week...
Rita Dang gal, both pics are beautiful, but WOW!
Beth, thanks for the Carrot Top Pesto recipe!
Machka your vacation cottage looks just right. Glad you made the time to enjoy it, wish it could have been 2 weeks, too!
Terri Thanks for sharing the walled garden pictures!
pip congrats on the lower chin-up assist weight. Well done!
Heather, somehow doesn't seem right that you must entertain on Mother's Day, instead, you should BE entertained...
Karen in VA thanks for asking heather about the whatever and sausages. It wasn't what I thought... ;}
Barbie, I love your weeding "like eating cashews"
Rebecca I, too, am disappointed in steamed Brussels sprouts. Far prefer them roasted with balsamic vinaigrette. Yum! Beautiful views!
KJ yes I've heard that sauerkraut making is a quite smelly process. There's a nasty story about a visiting great uncle from the farm who was looking for the chamber pot and... p.s. I value my sleep too much to watch anything scary, my dreams are bad enough as it is!
Kim you are a blessing for your nephew. So glad he has you to talk with.
Welcome Nancy nsimon24, Luana in the Wilamette Valley, monaraehillw and lacwest6605.

Evelyn I'm also a bit hit and miss at the logging of my food, by the time I have read everyone's posts I don't have time to log food (well that is my excuse!) Let's try our best in April to log every day.
I had a lovely day yesterday I visited my sister in law with my son, we had a lazy day watching movies, the first one we watched we thought her 4yr old grandson would like - it was Christopher Robin, but he got bored half way through and wanted to "play" so my son and his cousin Katie took him upstairs to play games on the X Box. Then we watched Mama Mia 2 which on reflection wasn't the best movie to see when my SIL was feeling quite sad about her mum not being around. She took her mums death very hard. I think it must have been about 9 or 10 years ago now. Mind you we were all in tears by the end of the movie, but as I said not the best movie under the circumstances. It would have been sad for her any day, but on Mother's Day!
Thanks for the birthday wishes, I feel very blessed to have such good friends.
Need to get off the computer, have a great day everyone.
Love to all

Good morning from Canada. I am 55, new to online groups but am hoping the support will help. I need to lose 20 pounds. My goals for April to cut out night time eating and drink less 🍷. Happy April everyone.6

My husband and I are adding to our "home gym". In March, we bought a rowing machine and I've done 6 rows so far. We've also got our bicycles on trainers and will be setting them up to use Zwift again as winter sets in. And we've got some weights.
But ...
We'd like a treadmill with (at least) the following specifications:
-- can handle weight up to about 120 kg
-- can handle speeds over 10 km/h
-- can connect to computer - download data
-- durable
-- long lasting
-- professional/gym quality or close to it.
Any suggestions?

Barbie: Thank you for the new thread! Finding this group has been a blessing in my life, and I am grateful that you provide us with a new thread each month. It is a gift I value.
Viv: I log my food on my phone as I go along. That way I don’t forget to put in what I’ve eaten and don’t worry about remembering how much of this or that. I visit this group from my computer. I find it much easier than trying to respond from the phone.
This will be a busy month for health issues for all three of us—DH, the dog and me. The dog has surgery scheduled for the fourth to remove a cyst on his backside. DH has a colonoscopy the ninth to try to figure out why his digestive tract is always in an uproar. I saw a dermatologist about a lump on my shoulder and he said it needed to get bigger before it could be taken care of. It is now causing pain. I think it is time to remove it, and not smart to wait around so I’ll be calling his office later today to see about an appointment.
My April resolutions will look exactly like my March resolutions. They are the core of what I need to do to stay healthy.

April 2019
2019 Resolutions
1. Log every bite and swallow. Done
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on strength and stamina. Done
3. Have fun every day. Most days I've found ways to have fun, but a few days were stressful.
4. Drink at least 3 glasses of water a day. Done
5. Monitor sleep. Average 7 or more hours nightly. Done
6. Avoid alcohol. I've indulged a little.

Well, March flew by! Seems I just wrote my goals for that month and here we are again! I did okay for March. I am now down to 236, which is a four pound loss from the beginning of March. Considering that my train got derailed with MIL's passing and the hubub surrounding the sale of the house, I will take that four pounds and be happy with it! I have already stated my April goals (last week)
Up my water intake
log everything
walk daily (try to get out once at my own pace)
plank daily (build on this throughout the month)
Heather- I, too, wondered about the *kittens* for dinner!
I made chicken shwarma last night and it turned out wonderful! Tim didn't care for it, he is not fond of middle eastern flavors. Colin and I thought it was yummy, so I will be making it again. A low calorie marinade for chicken and packed full of flavor. I served it with lemon couscous with toasted pine nuts. (not low calorie; but a good side in small portions). We built our meal on a bed of raw spinach, added some hot pickles and some home made yogurt. A squeeze of lemon topped it all off. IF you are ever looking for a cheese/dairy free meal, it is a good one.
First kiddo is here! The kids are on Spring Break, so I don't have Trentin in the mornings this week. I think I only have him tonight until 10 and then not again until the weekend. This is okay as it will give me time to get more things unpacked and organized that came from my mil's house. *sigh* neverending amounts of stuff
Hugs and strength to those who need it! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -
Thank you, Barbie for starting off another month.
My goal for March was to be lighter at the end of the month than the beginning. I failed miserably, being 9 pounds up over one short month.
I'm struggling a bit (OK, a lot) with depression on a number of fronts. Not clinically depressed, just beating on myself for a number of reasons, my weight definitely being one of them. Part of it is health-related, part of it is age-related, part of it is missing my son (while being very glad he's gone, both for our sake and his). Part is my writing, where I'm just blocked, still, and have been for weeks, and struggling with that. I'm not a "mood" writer, I'm a writer. It's... disturbing.
Traveling today, in a hotel in Little Rock tonight, and have my hopes that will break me free of this... malaise, whatever it is, that's depressing my spirits. Pure solitude often has its upside, at least for me. We'll see.
I love y'all, and most of the reason I haven't been contributing here is because I can't see out of this fog I'm in to feel I can contribute anything to anyone, even to myself. It's the reason I've said very little.
However, on a brighter note, my marriage feels renewed, re-centered, revived, from just being us again, after an exhausting year and a half. With a total of 10 months spent living with other people, either in their house or ours, plus moving and the house rehab, it's amazing to just focus on each other again.
Time to shower, finish packing, and get on the road,

When I want to log, I log my lunches and most of my snacks for the week in advance. I'll go in at lunch on Monday, and just log everything for Mon - Fri.
Dinners can be different each day, so I have to wait until later to log them, and my evening snacks may vary too, so I'll wrap things up just before bed.
But because what I eat is quite similar one day to the next, it's pretty easy.
EDIT: Having said that ... I went through and entered most things for the week.

Lisa. Oooofff, that writing thing. I am struggling with mine, but managing to drag myself to the page around three times a week. Has stopping your blog affected things? I tell myself that even one sentence of nonsense is better than nothing.
I came downstairs to make lunch and picked up my phone which was recharging. Found a voicemail on it and nearly didn't check it as it said Unknown. It was the breast clinic cancelling my appointment this afternoon because of staff illness. They rang at 9.04 this morning. Phew! Saves me having to order a taxi etc. It's a gorgeous day out there, so I may go out for a walk or a run. Doing a veggie curry for dinner with lentils, left over bits and pieces and some lovely spinach.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx

Kelly - your Indian meal sounded great, I love all those flavors.
Rita- I've been meaning to comment, you look much younger in your recent photo. I think you've not only lost weight, you've also lost years!
Lisa - glad to see you back. You've had a lot of changes here recently - knee surgery, son leaving. I don't do well with any change it seems, good or bad. Glad to hear you and Corey are having the chance to enjoy each other's company again.
Our poor older dog... the other night we had a huge crack of thunder and lightening right over the house! Sophie is terrified of any noise like that and has been constantly licking, licking since then. Female parts and paws, you name it. I have some herbal sedatives I'm going to feed her today and see if I can get her out of the habit.
Happy April Fools Day, ladies!
Lanette
Rainy and cool SW WA State (our weather for the next week it seems)

Penny here. I've been through the wars over the past couple months. I think I last posted from Cabo Verde in January, and I haven't logged in since then. How lovely to see you all again!
My long silence was caused by overwork. By coincidence two very big projects I'd agreed to well in advance both turned out to have several different non-negotiable deadlines on the same days. I kept up my health project as long as I could, jogging regularly and eating with my brain turned on, but the eating went down the drain in late January and the (regular) jogging followed soon after. Funny thing (not) is I've gained about 2 kg since then.
The real eye-opener is how quickly I lost my form. It's frightening how easily I tire now. I fully intend to claw my way back but it will take me some time. To help focus my attention, I'm going to register to run Spitsbergen half-marathon two months from today. My darling daughter has already registered, so that will be fun, even though we won't be running together. She will have completed her half-marathon, walked home, showered, changed and walked back to the finish line before I get there.
I began the recovery process a couple weeks ago by upping my jogging (increasing the frequency rather than the distance) and have started logging my food again. One step at a time...
