Betsy I’ll have to try training Leah to walk on my left side and hold the lead like you mentioned. At the moment she drags me everywhere even though I pull her back with a firm NO. She is very stubborn and if I stop to get her under control, she sets off even faster as if I have held her up! She’s better on the lunchtime walk for some reason, but it could be that she knows she is only going around the block and will not get off lead. Yesterday I tried to run a bit with her (well more of a shuffle really) and she seemed to enjoy the (slightly) faster pace. I thought I would use her as an exercise coach and try to run a little bit further every day. At the moment I can run for 100 steps then walk for 50. Who knows I might get as good as Heather.
Better get moving!
Love to all

I do you not understand why they want the dog to walk on the left side. I know that I always did that for dog training class in 4H with my daughter. However, it’s not practical!! When I walk the trails with my dog on the left everybody else’s dog coming towards me is on the left and not always friendly!! The dogs are nose to nose!! This is the stupidest way to walk a dog in my opinion. I trained Shep to walk on my right side and avoid all dogs coming towards me on their owners left side!!

Rebecca: I love the shopping list.
Margaret: My dentist will be doing the crowns on site, too. My appointment for the dentist was changed and it is this afternoon. :ohwell: He wants to get this done now because he will be off work getting cancer treatment for a second time. His brother is also a dentist and will be pitching in to keep the office open while he’s going through treatment.
Carol: Are you saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? I guess I won’t be getting my old dog to stop barking when the doorbell rings. A good dog is worth putting up with some annoying habits.
Rori: Your goals for the month look good. The one that would give me trouble is scanning photos. Our son did this for us several years ago, thank goodness!
Barbie: I’m up a bit, too. This is the result of stress eating from health worries for DH, the dog & me. My worry is a benign cyst on my back and minor. DH’s problems are the most worrisome. I hope the stress goes down soon for both of us. :ohwell: I am glad to hear that you were able to correct the false charges on your credit card. :flowerforyou:
Machka: Good luck with the dentist. :flowerforyou:
(((Heather))) Sending good thoughts your way.
Viv: We had a pinch collar to help teach our dog not to pull. It looks draconian, but it did the job and we never poked a hole in his neck. We haven’t needed it in years. :flowerforyou:
Twilli 1127: Welcome! :flowerforyou:
Our dog goes to the groomer this morning. He’ll be gorgeous for his surgery tomorrow morning. I go to the dentist this afternoon. Perhaps I’ll be gorgeous tomorrow, too.

Felicia - I have been there! I have been in a different city and had to tell my husband the number to order. A few weeks ago, he was out and I told him to stop and grab himself burgers on the way home. He texted me and asked me what he orders from a particular place. I was floored. I told my girls that I hope for their sake he goes before me.
Rori - making your home comfortable is such a nice way to treat yourselves.
We were just looking at a way to do a couple projects that won’t cost an arm and a leg.
Barbie - I need to cut back on food and up the exercise, it sure does come back easy.
Betsy - wonderful story about finding your Ella. You can teach an old dog new tricks huh?
Laura - I read once a long time ago that if you were truly hungry you would be willing to eat an apple, if you weren’t willing to eat the apple you weren’t hungry. I should start remembering that.
Heather - Hugs, sounds like you need a nap or a walk in the sunshine. I hope your mood picks up for you.
Carol - all of my bills are in my email now, I bet you that’s where they are.
All of this talk of husbands not knowing how to cook reminded me of a story about my Uncle that just passed. His first wife, the mother of his 5 children passed away in the early 90’s of cancer. It was a shock to the family and as you can imagine everyone was devastated. They had just built their dream home and were getting ready in a few years to enjoy retirement. Anyway, Aunt Ann passed away and 6 months later Uncle Bruce announced he was getting married. His children were angry, his brothers and sisters didn’t understand, of course the town gossip was he had been seeing this woman previously. It was a mess. My Dad went to my Uncle, his brother and asked him why he was remarrying so fast. Uncle Bruce told Dad. He said, Lorne with Ann being sick and in the hospital and then dying the cold cellar hadn’t been restocked and groceries hadn’t really been bought. I went and bought groceries and when I came home I put the jug of milk on the counter, but I hit the side and the milk exploded everywhere. I got that cleaned up and went to take vegetables to the cold cellar and there was an awful smell in there. I found some rotting vegetables and went to get a pail of soapy water to clean it up. Didn’t I drop that bucket and it went all over. Lorne, if a Wh**e had walked in the door right then I would have married her. I don’t know how to live without a woman there to help me. When Uncle Bruce passed away last month he had a special friend named Carol mentioned in his obituary. His second wife and he had divorced in 2012 as she wanted to live in the Yukon near her daughter which was too far away for him from his children.
I am going to our local library today, I found out about a group that helps job seekers there. I’m going to see what they have to say.

April goals:
Logging in my food daily. (Not a habit I’ve acquired yet)
Getting out and walking more. At least 3-4 times a week.
Weekly yoga about 3 times a week
Welcome. Time to get started. I waited until I was past 60 to develop those good habits but one day at a time things got better. Now I log my food and exercise daily, walk every day and go to line dance classes. You can do it.

Hi lovely ladies! Popping on to say hello. I'm on a couple different MFP groups and struggle to keep up on a regular/daily basis, but I always end up checking in from time to time because I think about you all and wonder how things are going for everyone.
Isn't it wonderful spring is finally showing it's face here in the US? I live in Wisconsin, and there are no flowers or anything like that yet, but it is still finally getting nice enough to take walks with a sweatshirt and no coat. It's the little things in life, right? :flowerforyou: It has been so nice to get outside and hear the birds again. I tend to hibernate in the winter because I'm klutzy and don't want to slip on the ice and end up laid up. I got a rescue dog in October last year. She's from Texas so wasn't used to the cold weather! She's just as happy, if not happier, that it's nice enough to go for walks outside again! Her name is Maddie, and she has brought me so many smiles over the past 5 or 6 months!
I hope you don't mind if I post my April goals and hop on when I have the opportunity to catch up!

We decided to cancel the dog's surgery. He is not symptomatic now & there is no current evidence of a cyst. DH, on the other hand, is going in for a colonoscopy and that has us both a bit tense. This will be an overnight trip for us and we've hired a critter-sitter for the dog. She stayed with him when we travelled to the east coast a couple of years ago. We were lucky to get her on short notice for tomorrow. :flowerforyou:6

Katla - Hope all goes well for you tomorrow. You are having a stressful time.
I picked up Bea and DH picked up Max and Edie. Unfortunately Edie was throwing up all the way home. Poor thing. Her mum got home at the same time so was able to take over and made us go home so as not to catch it. I made DH wash his hands thoroughly. She was sick on his shoes etc. Max was hunting for a drinking vessel that Edie hadn't touched so he wouldn't catch her germs. I sincerely hope I won't have caught anything to take to York.
We came home and had too much alcohol. Good job I've done a lot of exercise.....
Up early tomorrow to wash hair and catch a train to London.

Cloudy today with a little rain. very windy so I fed horses indoors from nets instead of outdoors. We got our lawn tractor back yesterday and DD was able to mow the front lawn after she got home from work and before the rain. I have decided to take a weight loss class at the YM. It is 12 weeks and includes classroom and exercise. I probably know most of what they will teach but it doesn't hurt to review and have some extra accountability. Especially now with DH ill and the uncertainty I am finding myself stress eating more.
Heather - Happy travels and hope you or DH don't catch the bug.
Katla - Sending good thoughts for you and your DH.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA

Glad you all liked my list!😂. Husband and I went to the realtors office just to see that every thing was going along. He stated everything looks in order. They were waiting for the past apartment managers to get back to them. We told him you probably wouldn't. He said that's ok, it won't impact negatively in any way. I think they have to wait they appropriate 5 days, which means we will hear from him Thursday. He did say the owner is quite particular about the yard, and evidently the past people were not renewed because of the lack of yard work. Husband and I have had owners like that so no worries. The owners I guess lived in Oak Harbor and will check up on the yard. Also has neighbors that report any neglect. Pride in ownership, and Hayes to be that messy ugly rental house. I will weed the heck out of this place!

Heather: I hope you are able to have an enjoyable visit with your friend.
Sue: Thanks so much for your good thoughts. They’re very welcome just now. :flowerforyou:
Rebecca: Keeping my fingers crossed for your new home. I hope all goes well.
I had my dental appointment today and have a new crown on my left lower back molar. My mouth is still numb, but my fingers work about as well as usual so I can type on my computer keyboard. They used some sort of laser printer to create the crown while I sat in the chair. I sat there a long while.
We cancelled the dog’s surgery because he seems to be doing well and the DH’s colonoscopy takes precedence over everything else. Monday we check into a hotel room near the hospital. The next day DH has his test and afterward we can come home. I hope the results lead to improvements in his quality of life--the sooner the better. Wednesday afternoon I need to go to the dermatologist to see about the cyst on my back. If DH isn’t feeling well after his procedure, I’ll call and change the appointment. I think this is likely. We’ll see. :ohwell:

Hi Gals,
Rebecca – Glad to hear that non-responsive owner will not impact the new rental. Weeding is great exercise, and depending on the space maybe you could grow a few herbs or veggies, if I recall right you had a community garden space at one time.
Heather – glad you were able to remove yourself from the germs quickly.
Katla - Although each of us are different, and your DH has his own issues, it seems that the worry and prep about a colonoscopy is worse than the recovery. Thinking good thoughts.
Ate like a pig today, but with 5 hours of gardening and a bit over 10,000 steps I felt ok eating back a couple of hundred of my exercise calories.

Went to the deep water class today. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Jari Love Get Ripped 1000 DVD.
Felicia – it would be hard to post a pic of the ceramics out by the pool since there are so many spread over a large area. I was hoping to somehow get a blanket for Linus that wouldn’t fade in the sunlight. One thing we were thinking of is to have a wire that the blanket would stick to. This way when you change it, you attach the blanket to the wire rather than his hand. But place the wire in a position so that it looks like he’s holding the blanket. Looks like I’ll have to look for some light blue fleece. I’m thinking that since I don’t need much fabric, maybe just a remnant would work at least for a few years.
M – I forget, what happened with your husband’s driving?
Regarding shopping – I would like to do the shopping online and have it delivered to the car rather than going in the store to get it, only problem is that you have to order a minimum amount (like $30) and many times I don’t get to that amount. Oh, I probably could if I’d let them pick out the milk and meats, but that I prefer to do myself because you know that they’re going to just pick any old one and I like to look for things like “how does the meat look, is there too much marbling, what is the expiration date”
I can’t remember the last time I ordered take-out. Oh, I think it was a few years ago when Denise or Jess wanted something. Maybe it was Denise because I remember getting a salad and all they had was iceberg <gag> lettuce. That was probably Pizza Hut.
Shopping list – Rebecca – yours was a hoot. I usually keep mine on my phone so whenever I’m in a store, I can just check to see if there’s something that I need.
TerriRichards – I’d even feel guilty if for some reason I didn’t meet my deadlines. Sometimes life just gets in the way. Maybe my deadline should be “just for today”
I think I’ll make some chocolate donuts for Vince today since I’ll probably have a little time between exercise and having to leave for ceramics. After ceramics need to stop at Lowes Foods to pick up the bleach for the pool and I need some more oat bran (got my coupon!).
Yesterday, we went to look for something for this frog that I made to hold in his hand. Whatever we get has to be 16” from the bottom of the stake to where whatever it is the bottom of that. Vince thought a butterfly would look nice. Since there is a picture of a fly on his stomach, I’m thinking more on the lines of a pinwheel. It isn’t fired yet, when it’s fired many times the paint comes out a different shade so that’s why I haven’t posted a picture of it yet. I didn’t get it fired when I first painted it since I wanted to look for a solar-powered flower. Only I forgot that the only solar-powered ones had the solar thing on the bottom, for some reason I was thinking that it was in the middle of the flower. I’m thinking that I saw some that were solar-powered in the middle of the flower in the Dollar Tree, but I’d be willing to bet that the stem isn’t 16” or longer. I’ll check it out, anyway since I have to go there for Easter cards anyway. I just can’t see spending a lot of $$ for Hallmark cards when the card just gets thrown out anyway.
Twilli – welcome
Tracey from Green Bay – you were missed. Glad to hear it wasn’t something real serious. Always love hearing from you.
After exercise, stopped at the Salvation Army then the dollar store. I had to get Easter cards for the girls anyway. I found this stake with a pinwheel and a frog on top that can go in the frog’s hand so I took the frog to ceramics tonight to be fired. Also put Donald Duck in to be fired.
Put out most of the ceramics by the pool and took the other half of the solar cover off. We need to get a new one, that one was falling apart. Well, it’s over 10 years old. So we put ½ of the pool cover and the cover for the spa in the garbage last week and the other half this week. Had dinner and then to ceramics. Stopped at Lowe’s Foods on the way home.

A Goal: get through my list! It would be great if I could get through it in April, but there are 50 main items on the list, each with sub-items. Also, no sooner than I finish one thing, more crop up. So we'll see how we go.
Machka in Oz
Yay ... I've done one item on my list.
I did a second item too, but that morphed into a new bigger item with a few extra components.
And I've added another item related to the first one.
This is how it goes. One step forward, one step back.

Katla, staying in a hotel near the site for the colonoscopy is a great idea but certainly adds an extra layer of stress to the whole ordeal especially the part about having to leave your dog behind. I wish you and your husband the best getting through the procedure.
Rebecca, you and your husband and son would be ideal tenants. Best wishes for successfully renting the place you want.
It was supposed to rain today so I planned an excursion to the new Michael's store in town that I haven't visited yet. I was there less than 10 minutes--long enough to walk to the back find the one color of yarn that I couldn't find at Wal Mart and get back to the car. I'd forgotten just how much I don't like shopping except to get exactly what's on my list. It didn't rain, but it was much colder today so I wasn't disappointed to not work in the yard.
My first day of returning to my basic eating went great. When Jake asked if I wanted to go out for lunch tomorrow, I declined the invitation so I could stick to my eating plan.
Barbie from chilly NW WA3 -
My goals were March were the same as Feb and Jan: to move 10 minutes per day, every day. I only missed days I was very ill or recovering from a surgical procedure, so did it 80% of the time. I had two surgical procedures, one of which took me almost a week to recover. I also, more often than not, did 20 or more minutes a day. So I'm very happy! I look forward to exercise and I feel stronger.. and best of all, I think I just feel better in general.
Not sure how much weight I lost, but I'm down 47 lbs total. I only weigh about once per month (or less). Have many more to go, since I started at 402.
My goals for April are: 10 minutes of exercise per day, learn & perfect one more freezer meal recipe (to make in bulk and freeze in individual portions) - hopefully something vegetarian! I also need to figure out if my caloric needs have changed now that I'm exercising, and adjust for that. I only want to lose .5 - 1 lb per week (I am recovering from an eating disorder & more weight loss only encourages the disorder).
Have a great month, ladies!

📙April 2019 Goals
1. Carbs 50g max with no more than 25g per meal.
2. Fiber 25g.
3. Track in MFP. Complete the entry daily.
4. Exercise - log 30 Fitbit minutes
5. No eating after 9pm. To prevent late night snacking & get a good 12 hour overnight fast.
6. In bed by midnight.
Hey folks! I’m back. I’ll try this again. I seemed to do best when i post daily accountability.
Hope everyone is doing well.

Michelle: Just for today is my usual deadline. 😂 And I see each one as an achievement. Sometimes I even use 'Just for this hour!' and start doing something. If I'm busy, by the time the hour is up, the notion is off me!
Grocery Shopping: We have a printed tick list which I have set out in the order of the shelves in the supermarket, with spaces for occasional items. Now that we are both retired, DH likes to come with me and is quite good at doing it on his own. I'm very fortunate, as he also does more than his fair share of the domestic chores, and he likes cooking.
My Word for 2019 is CHOICE with a different word chosen for each month.
My word for April is CONSOLIDATE
This month I am choosing to take stock of how much I have achieved so far. At almost 73, I feel that my emphasis should be on health and fitness. I upped my calories slightly, and am concentrating on reducing my empty calories.
The increase in calories doesn't seem to have had an adverse effect so far. I've still got my daily budget set for a small loss, and that seems to be happening. It's slow but steady, so I'm fairly happy with it.
April Daily Goals Just for today...- Log food/stay under goal 4/4
- 9000 steps a day 4/4
- 60+ minutes intentional exercise daily 4/4
- Weigh less at the end than now - 0.8

M – I forget, what happened with your husband’s driving?
Michele in NC
He got his driver's licence back on the first assessment ... not a driver's test, just a general assessment. Passed with flying colours!!
And then, just 3 days later, he had a seizure (tonic clonic or grand mal). Bye-bye licence.
Regarding groceries ... I usually order once a week for the two of us, and have no trouble going over $100 each week. In fact, I'm often over $150 and about once a month, I'm up around $200. The only meat I order is chicken mince once in a while. That's about all the meat we eat. And I don't order much in the way of fresh fruit and veg ... we pick that up at a fresh fruit and veg market or similar.

Fancy good point about dogs being walked on the left, I’d just be glad if Leah stopped pulling . I don’t care at what side she walks on. It’s the same as when they say don’t let the dog walk in front of you. I don’t mind if Leah is walking in front, if she is going the wrong way, I say “this way” and she is happy to go with it. I also think it depends on the dog, Frankie our other dog was a reactive dog (to everything), so we couldn’t let him get too far in front when there were people/dogs/cars etc nearby. We can praise Leah and use exciting gestures, but couldn’t do that with Frankie, we had to keep voices/gestures calm. For 10 years we “managed” his behaviour by keeping him as calm as possible even if it meant that we walked him very early in the morning to avoid people. (Can’t understand why I miss him!)
Katia hope all goes well for your husband’s surgery.
Heather enjoy your visit with your friend in London, I hope she is feeling well for your visit.
Better make a move, need to compensate for all the extra calories consumed yesterday.

Michelle: I can empathise with what you say about goal-setting. I have had to train myself to think of goals as guidelines for what I want to attain, and not to feel guilty when I fall short. Making SMART goals, and/or breaking them down into smaller steps help me get where I want to be, if not today, then tomorrow, or the next day. Maybe renaming them Aims might help
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Attainable
R - Relevant
T - Time-bound
Later:
I found this definition of a goal and it occcurred to me that maybe it's the deadlines that we set for ourselves that are the problem, rather than the goals.
A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of people envisions, plans and commits to achieve. People endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.
I prefer the list method ... which is actually similar to what you've said. I make a long list. Certain things need to be done on certain days, so those things are higher priority or definite priority. The rest I work through one thing at a time, and if I have to push things to the next day and next day and next day ... that's more or less OK. Then periodically something from the list rises to the top and needs to get done, so it does.
But those are basic life goals like getting assignments done, making and attending medical appointments, etc.
When it comes to bigger goals, like cycling a long distance or running a half marathon, those require a plan.
