WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2019

This seems to be a great group. I got back into logging March 7 (staying away from it my weight started going up).
Age: 64
Height: 5'5 1/2-5/6" (I think the old lady shrink may be starting)
HW: 220lbs (in 2006)
Restart weight: 162lbs
CW: 157lbs
Goal: 140-145lbs (?)
Thinking I may need to reevaluate the activity level I have set--put it at light, but my steps are increasing to over 10,000 daily. Thought I'd give myself most of April to see if I stay committed to the exercise level (which is primarily walking, works best for two replaced hips).
I like the idea of the "older ladies group", more in line with where I am at my stage in life.9 -
Machka: Sorry that your optometrist doesn’t carry the glasses you need. We go to an eye-doctor in a clinic that has an optical office right in the building. It isn’t inexpensive, but the quality is great. We always have to have our prescriptions ordered and come back for them. They don’t carry an over the counter stock that would work for our prescriptions. My mom used to take me to Woolworth’s lunch counter. They closed their store in my hometown long ago but I have good memories about having lunch with mom.
My current optometrist is great ... their customer service has been fantastic, and I'm reasonably confident that they'll be able to provide me with what I need.
My previous place, a chain optical place with cheaper prices, wasn't good. If your vision issues are pretty basic, they'd be all right but as soon as you need multifocal lenses or something, they can't really handle that.
Our Woolworths isn't the same as the North American Woolworths. This is our Woolworths Group: https://www.woolworthsgroup.com.au/page/about-us/our-brands/
The other big grocery here is Coles: https://www.colesgroup.com.au/home/ ... we do use them sometimes, but I've found their selection isn't as good as Woolworths.
But I remember those Woolworths counters in North America too.

Laura in LA, glad your mom is feeling more energetic. I read this thread every morning at breakfast and at least once more during the day. It keeps me focused on how important my weight loss journey is.
ginnytez, I do a lot of walking. There are several women in my line dance class who have had one or both hips replaced and dancing has been good exercise for them/
Heather, glad your visit with your friend went well especially with sure a long and tiring trip to see her.

Did Jari Love’s Ripped 1000 DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a DVD for the bosu. Then I’m going to start volunteering at the soup kitchen
Volunteered at the Green Room then came home and started putting down the paver sand, got a lot of leaves that were floating on top of the pool out of the pool (without any trees around us it’s amazing how many leaves get in the pool!) then finished putting down the paver sand. Will go to ACMoore tonight to see if these ladies can help me with a crochet blanket I made. The directions for the edging just doesn’t make sense to me. I sure hope so
Shannon – great goal to learn one more meal
M – some of the prices for your food astounded me
Tracey – good idea getting that rib checked out. I really hope it isn’t cracked. Please let us know
Laura – happy anniversary!
Katla – good job saying “no”. I’d never heard of PCH scam
ginny – welcome

Hi Gals,
So for about 2 months now I have been craving honey walnut prawns – a Chinese dish which I bet no one in china has ever heard of, but basically it is deep fried shrimp with roasted walnuts in a honey and mayo sauce. It is ABSOLUTLY not easy to fit around CICO – but today was 3 hours of heavy gardening, 45 min of yoga and 10,000 steps. So I treated myself, it is usually served over white rice, I decided to serve it over raw spinach, and I ate about 75% of the single serving. It’s been about a year since I had it, I savored every bite, quit when I was full, and will probably not have it again for a long time. (well I’ll have the leftovers tomorrow then not for a long time). It is crazy pricy, in both cash and calories. But I got it from my favorite place and it was worth it.
And I did not eat but a couple of my exercise calories!

See, when you say $30 for groceries, I think "per day" ... and I wonder why you don't order your groceries on a weekly basis.
Right now, we're averaging about $25/day for the two of us but if I were to buy more meat, it would be about $30/day.
Just my lunches are $3.70/day right now ($18.50/5-day work week) ... multiply that by 2 because my husband eats lunch as well, and you're up to $37 for lunches Monday - Friday.
But I'm doing really well only spending $3.70/work day on lunches ... most of my coworkers buy their lunches from a cafe or something, and they spend about $15/work day for their tray of sushi or sandwich and coffee or whatever.
I'll also add that I buy as much as I can on sale ... it's one of the reasons we got a small chest freezer, so that we could stock up on some foods when they are on sale.
And we've started growing some of our own veg ... got a pretty decent crop of potatoes that should last us a couple months, I think.

the expenses for food vary so much! It's super interesting to see the differences of on food/gasoline(petrol)...
I try to stay around $50 per month on food at the grocery - little meat, lots of home grown items; and although we have different stores than Michelle has I also do lots of discount shopping. And when someone gives me a garden overflow I do what I can to store it. so like right now my morning fruit is applesauce I made and canned last fall. With the skins and just cinnamon and nutmeg - no sugar. I eat out usually just one meal a month, and eat 2 lunches a week at the camp I am the gardener at.. (meals are free there)
It's a challenge to be on a budget!

Lists
I've got a list a kilometre long for my personal stuff (that's the 50+ item list I mentioned earlier), but work has been so busy lately and I've been taking on so many new things there, that I've decided to create a list for that too!! That one is shaping up to be another 50+ item list, but hopefully over a 3-month period. And I did do one item on that list today already!!
In the next hour, I've got to make a call to get going on one of the items on my personal list and resubmit some data which is an item on my work list ... and then I'll be heading out the door to get my root canal finished (personal list item). Better get busy!

Machka thanks for the link. Loved the US five and dimes, their lunch counters, wooden floors and penny candies. Was sad to read the Australian chain had no historical link to F.W. Woolworth Company, the signs and pictures sure looked the same! Like Beth, I thought food and gas were high in our small coastal community. WOW!
Betsy so glad to hear your eye pressure stable at 6 months. Gives me hope for Joe.
Barbie love your "just smiled and took credit"
Allie, ditto Margaret's excellent advice and Felicia's concerns. Kim's right, job search is now job # 1, imho.
Kay great deal on those curtains!
Penny, remind me what and how many students you teach?
Tracey hope you can get some relief from that rib pain. Hard to present your best workface when you're hurting.
Katla, ah yes "Walk eeees!" Loved Barbara Woodhouse. Also loved seeing river otters back in Boise. Haven't seen any here yet.
Rori hope the massage has you feeling better soon! I go every month, couldn't wait eight weeks, much less since November, my body would stiffen up and refuse to dance!
Vicki 12-14 hour workday? :noway:
Heather what a blessing you are to your friend, to be someone she can talk to about her funeral wishes.
Laura in LA happy TOPS anniversary!
Kim your food budget is amazing!
Welcome Ginnytez, let us know what you'd like to be called and your general locale.
Leash arm left over from Saturday's struggle brought me to the chiropractor today. She really worked me over. Time for an aspirin and bed. Hope the therapeutic masseuse tomorrow has some mercy.

📙Accountability post for Thursday, April 3rd
✔️1. Carbs 50g max with no more than 25g per meal. (46g)
✔️2. Fiber 25g. (25g)
✔️3. Track in MFP. Complete the entry daily.
✔️4. Exercise - log 30 Fitbit minutes (44 Active minutes).
✖️5. No eating after 9pm. To prevent late night snacking & get a good 12 hour overnight fast.
✖️6. In bed by midnight.
Thursday was my first day back to my plan. I didn’t eat enough calories, but my stomach felt off all day.
• Got my exercise cleaning house. Vacuumed the whole house. Scrubbed bathroom from floor to ceiling and including the floor and the ceiling. I worked up a sweat - so I’m counting it.
• At about midnight... I decided I hadn’t eaten enough for the day - so I had Greek yogurt with walnuts and some Choc Zero maple syrup. Added 1/2 tablespoon of psyllium husk powder to some water to squeeze in a few grams of fiber to hit my fiber goal.
• Missed my 9pm eating curfew and midnight bedtime. But, I’ll get there. My sleep has been skewed for years. It's going to take a while to dial it back.
Happy about today's progress.

Root canal ... finished!! It took 3 appointments, but it's done. Next week, I get a different tooth fixed and filled, and my husband also has a dental appointment.
Between the dental appointments and the new glasses ... it's been an expensive couple weeks!

Good early morning to all! I took a google class for beginners yesterday and was reminded how important the connection between student and teacher is for me. I instantly loved this young teacher and wished I could learn from her every day. We are just a small group of "mature" teachers trying to catch up with this technology. Instead of having eyes rolling in my direction when I ask a question, this lovely teacher accepted where I was coming from and showed me some pretty nifty tricks to make my paper work/communication life easier. It was a reminder that I can continue learning for myself, even though this year I feel like all I do is teach others (kids and young teachers). Super glad I enrolled, I was reluctant to because there is so much going on, but I have to say, ah ha moment for me! I recharge my emotional battery by learning something new, duh!
A few more 14 hour days ahead, planning healthy food and taking walking breaks is going to be the difference between complete exhaustion and managing well.
Happy Friday! NYKAREN7 -
I have absolutely no idea how much I spend on food and groceries for the month. I just know it is a LOT. It comes out of the joint account, so as long as we are not in the red I just carry on buying what we like, when we like. I try not to be super extravagant and we rarely have left overs or waste food (I make a great veg curry from the bits at the bottom of the fridge), but I do like good food. We don't buy any junk food, except cheap, own brand shortbread biscuits for DH's morning snack. No chips, ice cream, candies etc. Very rare to have takeaway. All real stuff. But it does really add up! If you add in the occasional meal out, it is a bit staggering, although I've never actually sat down and counted it. We very occasionally have fish and chips at our son's house and that is as much as a lot of people's weekly food budget! It even shocks me!
Sometimes I do feel guilty about it, thinking of what we are spending. I try to contribute to the food bank collection at the supermarket when I remember and always try to shop and eat mindfully, bearing in mind our privilege and being grateful. Perhaps one month I might actually note down what we are spending as an exercise, but we do have enough for our normal, everyday expenses. If we run the joint account down (our state pension goes into it) DH tops it up out of his work pension. Our biggest expense, other than food etc, is council tax. But I'm not complaining as we get terrific trash collection here and free buses for pensioners. To us that is worth the cost of the council tax in itself!
Today I'm getting ready for my trip to York. Our new cleaner is starting today, two hours once a fortnight. I have to make a dinner that I can leave half of for DH to heat up when he gets in late from the cricket, having driven for an hour and a half. Probably chicken, lentil and spinach curry.
Before that I am going to go for a run. I've done most of my exercises, but still have floor and weights to do. DH and I got up really early do he could get most of his exercise in before he set off. I was awake from 5 am, so it wasn't a problem. Thinking about my cancer friend and the ****** weekend ahead of me! Grrrrrrrrrr! Looking forward to running. Got to get money out for the cleaner.
All will be well. I wrote some of my book on the train yesterday and hope to do the same tomorrow.
Attitude of gratitude. That's what I am 'flipping' to. (Thanks KJ)

For those new people who don't know me, I eat a lot and do a lot of exercise. First thing I do 600 calories on the gym machines and floor, resistance and weights. After lunch I either go for a 5k run, ot get some more cycling in, or dance, or yoga. I try to do between 800-950 calories exercise a day and eat most of them back. Even so I sometimes eat mire and go into maintenance calories (I have my data set for sedentary, losing calories at 1200) I have maintained at around 138 lbs (5ft 4ins) for over 5 years. I lost 59 lbs originally over 18 months. I haven't weighed myself for a couple of weeks and fear a bit of 'creep' upwards as I have been a bit lax recently. I do always log, but feel I am eating a lot. Eating a lot is fine if the exercise is consistent, but if I get behind for a day (like yesterday) my eating slips over. I am a comfort eater.
I am 69 and didn't start running until last year, having sworn all my life that I couldn't run because of my bad knee.

Morning all: having a cup of coffee before starting the day. I have turned into an early riser the last couple of years. Going to do do some stretches and a shorter time on treadmill this am before work. Planning on a shorter work day today since I need to use some vacation time. Going to a butcher shop about 20 minutes away to get some meat for the month (they have the no antibiotics, etc,).
I am growing fond of the new routine (or old one I am getting back into). Doing some sort of work out in morning has me getting to work at 8, and since I work until 5 that gives me my 8. I spend 30 minutes of lunch walking around building. The two activity times are giving me more energy.
Hope everyone has a good day.

We also like good food. For example, I could buy Woolworth's bread for $1.50 a loaf but ... it's just not worth it. We usually pay about $3.90 for a much better quality bread.
I don't keep really detailed track of expenses, but definitely have a pretty good idea. I've got a spreadsheet going.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
I woke up feeling more myself this morning than I have in weeks, and am hopeful I've shed whatever it was that had me moping around for the six or eight weeks. For those older than me, please don't take this wrong, but I think I was mourning my youth! Slid past my 59th birthday during these dark weeks, and feel as if I've passed through some door I didn't even know existed, and the light is brighter on this side.
The ages ending with "9" were the only ones that ever disturbed me--my sister and I used to have massive celebrations for those to get us through them. Not saying it was the only reason for my recent gloomy state, but it certainly wasn't helping. A series of minor health issues have largely healed up, as well, with various over the counter treatments, and that's also helpful.
I also woke up this morning with words running around in my head, and as a writer, that was something I missed quite a lot. Dead silence each morning from my writer's brain was... disconcerting. Like having a good friend who suddenly cuts off contact.
Have been reading all along, never really left y'all, and you've been a lifeline. Thank you for that.
Love y'all,

Only have a quick minute. Chiming in on groceries. I am well aware of how good we have it here in the states as compared to other areas in the world when it comes to variety/cost of our groceries. I spend (on average) $125-$150/week on groceries. I would say 10-15% of that is meat, about 25% is produce, 10-15% is dairy/cheeses, about 25% is cleaning supplies and toiletries. The rest tends to be miscellaneous items (baking aisle, condiments, special ingredients). I have tried to go lower than that, but with three adults and seven little ones and 21 meals in a week (plus snacks), I think I do pretty well. We eat out once or twice a month and it is usually someplace that we have a gift card or coupon for (or someplace inexpensive). You will also never hear me complain about the cost of gasoline/petrol. Right now the cost of gas in Michigan is about $2.50/gallon. Locals always complain when it rises; but I remember a few years back, taking my girl scouts to Savannah and gas was over $4/gallon! I also know that other countries pay even more than that for their petrol. I don't travel much, so it really doesn't bother me.
Heather- So happy your visit with your friend went well; and it speaks very well of her trust in you to open up and talk about her funeral arrangements. Not an easy thing to talk about. Sending hugs!
Pip- Going toe to toe with Kirby? Or just playing footsie?
Ginger and Lisa- Good to see you again!

Dollars spent on groceries is a sore spot for me. My partner buys too much food and much of it goes to waste. Discussions about it are to no avail. So I just try to let it go, because she is unable or unwilling to stop overbuying food. This is one of our few bones of contention, fortunately.

That was the main reason why we switched from fresh to frozen veggies for the most part! We were buying veggies with good intentions ........ and throwing them out a couple weeks later. Now with frozen veggies our waste has gone way down.
