So ... two of the things on my list today were Optometrist appointments for my husband and me.
An hour later ...
-- he's got his glasses sorted so that he'll have two pair with the correct prescription in them. He was seeing double after the accident, but that gradually healed to a point and he's had to go through a progression of lenses since last June as his vision healed. Hopefully we're on the last set now.
-- I have a brand new pair of progressive desk glasses on their way and new progressive lenses for general use will be put into an existing frame. My distance vision has improved, and my shorter vision has worsened.
Interestingly, I can wear a pair of my older prescription sunglasses again! Since my distance vision has improved, they're right for me again in that regard, except that my axis of astigmatism is 12 degrees off, so they aren't perfect.
Anyway, hopefully my new progressive lenses for general use will work this time. I tried them about 6 years ago, and they did not work for me at all. I was so seasick. The place we got the glasses wasn't great, and we were getting ready to move, so the only solution they offered me was to replace the lenses with plain bifocals. Those were ok but not great. I only wore them for cycling.
Since then, I've been able to wear progressive desk lenses just fine with no seasickness ... so I'm hoping that I'll also be able to wear the general uses progressives now too. Especially if they're made by a company that knows what they are doing!!
The joys of being so short-sighted I'm almost legally blind.

I found this definition of a goal and it occcurred to me that maybe it's the deadlines that we set for ourselves that are the problem, rather than the goals.
A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of people envisions, plans and commits to achieve. People endeavor to reach goals within a finite time by setting deadlines.

Betsy and Viv: Tumble and I had a happy accident today. When we got to dog group, there was no collar on her neck! I'd removed it for grooming and forgot to put it back on. Poop! Might as well go home, can't do this without a collar. Hmm, dug around the car's door's pockets where I sometimes keep spare leads. Eureka! THERE is the Gentle Leader for which I've been looking for weeks. She let me put it on, tried to shake and paw it off a few times, then settled in and accepted it. For the FIRST time since we've been going to dog group (over a year) we were able to do both pack walks without me struggling with her forging and having to drop out. She was still barky to the newest dogs, but accepted some of the less new, did the mixer, needle and thread as well as the shoelace weave with no major meltdowns. Oh and 8K+ steps, highest since retiring in '16. Happy day!
Terri sound SMART advice, but love best the "Just for today" and "Just for this hour". Great strategies!
Heather really really hope you don't bring Bea's woes to York, except maybe it would make your difficult friend back off a bit... ;}
NYKaren you must be soooo proud!
KJ "...doesn't know his fruits and veg" reminds me of a story Mama told on Papa. She sent him to the store for lettuce and he came back with cabbage. She did all the shopping after that, could he have done it on purpose?
Barbie and Margaret add me to the group of careful receipt and statement checkers. Also verify checking account with bank's website almost daily. Obsessive? MOI??? Nonetheless, forgot to push the SUBMIT button on a credit card payment so got a late fee. Called them up and because of history and paying full amount due only 2 days after due date, they forgave the late fee.
Mary in AZ couldn't agree with you more about the stupidity of obedience training dogs to walk on handler's left, just for the trail and sidewalk dog meeting reason you mentioned. Yet I still do it. SMH!
Tracey good for you for going to that job seekers group. Hope you got some helpful insights/information. Loved the Uncle Bruce story
Katla printed crown? Amazing new world! Wishing you safe travels tomorrow and hoping for helpful results from DH's test.
Sue in WA do those hyacinths have a sweet scent?

Michele I am so with you about checking expiry dates and choosing meats and produce myself. Doubt I'd ever be comfortable with the click and pickup type grocery services. Likewise keep my grocery and to do lists on iphone, love the free AnyList app.
Machka Couragia! Each step forward is a step forward. Adding new things are new steps, not backwards steps. You are making progress! Wow, 100-150/week for little meat and no produce? Food is expensive in Tasmania!
Shannon in Ontario, I've seen your exercise posting on my timeline and am so proud of you. Keep on keeping on!
Welcome twilli1127, welcome back Tracie from Green Bay and Ginger in TX. Good to see you posting!

This is our grocery store: https://www.woolworths.com.au/
It doesn't take long to add up!
I do order sweet potatoes, carrots, and a pile of frozen veggies online, but we buy the rest of the produce in person.
Yes, Australia is more expensive than the US, and Tasmania is likely the most expensive State in Australia because it's a rather remote island and a lot of stuff needs to be shipped here.
When you live here, it's not so bad, but tourists usually comment!! When I was a tourist, I went through a little bit of sticker shock too.

Viv, nice idea to use the right side and allow space with oncoming walkers with dogs.
Yesterday had my six month eye exam and eye pressure was stable.

Jake and I go grocery shopping together as one of our "dates". Since most of our meals are "find it and fix it", we both need to be at the store to make food choices. One of us fixes a meal for the two of us at midday but the other meals and snacks are ones we make on our own and on our own schedule.
Many years ago I go I saw a cartoon where the dog says "Whose walk is this, anyway?" and that it my watchword for most of the walks I take with Sasha and Bessie. Our long walk is early in the morning when there are rarely any people or cars around. A lot of the walk is in large grassy areas where the dogs find wonderful things to sniff.
Barbara, I used "gentle leaders" for both poodles for years. It kept them under control better than just a collar. I remember one time when we were at an RV rally and someone told me that I had much better control of the dogs than Jake did. It was because I used the "gentle leader" and he didn't. I just smiled and took credit for my superior dog control skills.

Allie I am hearing many red flags in your current job. Make finding another job your job now. Best to leave on your own terms not on the terms of what is happening in your office. As my son says the best person to look after you is you. Your current employer has no loyalty to you. He did not hire you he hired the 32 year old for his own reasons. To me that is red flag enough!

Good morning. I’ve been reading and not posting again. I’m in full redecorating mode with painting, waiting on new flooring to arrive and be installed, hanging new curtains and rods, and just this morning ordered new cushions for the front porch furniture. Dave and I will get our ferns tomorrow. I’ll clean the rockers and get the dust and pollen off the porch so it will look nice and renewed for spring.
I’m happy, overall, with my choices for curtains. I would have preferred the living room ones have grommets, but I settled for rod pockets to get the color I wanted with the price I wanted. I really lucked out with the guest room curtains, finding a whole set of 4 panels for $26 at Ross and rods for $6.99 each at a fabric outlet in town.
I’m still struggling with my weight loss journey but trying to find peace with the slow process. Put me in the same camp with those who say they haven’t been posting because they feel they don’t have anything helpful to contribute at the moment.
I love you all and value this community.
Kay, in NEGA.

Blehhhhch!
I just finished editing a PhD thesis of the worst kind. The student has essentially copied text from the four studies she's been involved in and pasted them into a template. Sure, she presents lots of research work, but there's absolutely no synthesis. It's the kind of thesis L. Frank Dobie called "transference of bones from one graveyard to another". (At least Dobie is who Uncle Google tells me said it.)
Just had to get that out of my system. Thanks for listening.
Tomorrow I'll be lecturing for a few very bright students at the University here in Svalbard. That will be much more fun.

Katla - hope your husband has positive results.
Michelle - it seems funny to read that you are getting the pool ready to open, we still have snow on the ground. I can’t wait to see your next ceramics come back. I just love your paint jobs.
Shannon - congrats on the loss so far!
Machka - when I first got progressives I was scared of the sea sickness effects. A friend told me to make sure they measured where the glasses would normally sit on my face not where they are supposed to sit. (You know Slid down your nose), I have done that with both pairs and have not had an issue at all.
Barbara - what a great time you had with Tumble! I just love that name.
Kay - I am envious of your curtain and rod prices. We struggle here terribly with prices. I bet you are having lots of fun redecorating.
Penny - how do you handle that, is it plagiarism? I’ve been reading a lot about plagiarism lately due to the authors that are being plagiarized.
I have a doctors appointment in an hour, I feel like I have somehow cracked my rib. I’m not sure what is going on, but it’s just getting worse.
We received our gallery from our photo session yesterday. I need to decide what I want to print. I just love so many of them.
My meeting with a career counsellor went well she has given me some advice to adjust wording in my resume. Hopefully this will help. I have a meeting on Tuesday with another one as well.
I did find a few more jobs to apply for yesterday.
Off to the doctor

Kim from CA: You are absolutely right that the prep and worry is the worst part of a colonoscopy. We’ve both been there and done that a number of years ago. Poor DH is there again because he has some serious symptoms. We want to know what is going on so that we might figure out how to improve the quality of life for him.
Barbie: The hotel and critter sitter add expense, but we’ve had colonoscopies before. The trip by car to the center with cramping innards was too horrid to describe. This is more expensive but less stressful by a power of ten zillion. :ohwell:
Shannon: Your weight loss strategies are well thought out and wise.
Ginger: Great to see you again!!!
Viv: Thanks for your good wishes for DH. Regarding dogs, We took our dog to a local training class when he was a pup. It was a very good decision & we’ve had no pulling issues or poor behavior in public. There used to be a wonderful dog training show from Britain on our Public Broadcasting Channel. Barbara Woodhouse was the trainer. I can still her say, “Walkies!”
Allie: Sorry your new dentist is socially inept. I doubt chairside manners was something he learned in dental school. Now he’s going to the school of hard knocks. If his patients leave him, it will be a big life-lesson. :grumble:
Machka: Sorry that your optometrist doesn’t carry the glasses you need. We go to an eye-doctor in a clinic that has an optical office right in the building. It isn’t inexpensive, but the quality is great. We always have to have our prescriptions ordered and come back for them. They don’t carry an over the counter stock that would work for our prescriptions. My mom used to take me to Woolworth’s lunch counter. They closed their store in my hometown long ago but I have good memories about having lunch with mom.
Barbara: Congrats on your obedience class success.
Betsy in WA: Great news on your eye pressure.
Kay: It is good to see your post. I hope you’ll be here often.
Penny: Back in the day I was assured that if you credit the original author it isn’t plagiarism to use their work. That said, we were expected to use their work to reach our own conclusions and state them. :grumble:
We saw a river otter swimming in the river this morning. We love those little guys!
Quiet day at home today. Yay!!! Our medical stuff is happening next week.
Yoga today!!!!! YAY!!!

I agree with Margaret. I am becoming quite suspicious about why the young guy was hired. When things don't add up, I cynically jump to "someone is sleeping with someone (or wants to)." The doc doesn't seem to be listening to reason when it comes to the new employee, so something is off.

Allie: Does your dental practice have reviews on Yelp or BBB? Is it endorsed by anyone on Nextdoor.com? These are some 'word of mouth' referral boards that can sink a practice if the feedback is negative. A happy patient might tell one person they like your office. But an unhappy one will tell the world. So in addition to losing current patients, this office manager will tarnish the doctor's reputation, and in a small community, that's very hard to recover from.
Michele: When your pool opens, I'll be there vicariously.
Katla: DH is so lucky to have your stalwart care. I hope the colonoscopy trip and procedure all go smoothly. ((hugs))
My DH has his annual physical today with a new doctor at the same integrative medical office. It's frustrating to have to start over with a new person, so hoping for the best. Aside from dementia, he is losing hearing and we need (for insurance purposes) to have the primary care physician make the referral to a hearing center. How blessed are we that I am retired and have the time to handle all his appointments and affairs. It's a full time job.
Tomorrow is my first therapeutic massage since November! Shame on me. I need to get in every 8 weeks to feel my best. Can't wait.
Take care, friends. We can do this.

Heather--Pray you and DH do not catch anything. And that your trip goes well with a nice visit.
Katla--Sending prayers and hugs for you and DH that all goes well.
Shannon--Sounds like you are doing great. Keep it up!
My swing shift person just called in so I will be doing extra making my 8 hour day 12-14 hours. Gotta love it.
Tracey--I hope you get good news at the doctor and nothing is broken. Sounds like your appointment with the job person went well. Keeping you in prayer for a good job soon. Looking forward to seeing what you pick for the family pictures.
Rori--enjoy your massage. Have you talked to Meg? I do worry about her.
Well have to shift my mind set to do some afternoon duties. I am trying to finish up a baby blanket I am making for my niece's baby shower Saturday. It's not the end of the world if I don't get it done as I can mail it.

My visit with my cancer friend went well. I bought some bits for lunch and some treats for her and we chatted about life. I was all set to leave at 3 when she suddenly started talking about her funeral wishes, so I stayed another half an hour as I reckoned there aren't too many people she can talk like that with. She is writing down all her wishes, tying up all the ends. She is much weaker, breathless and tires easily, but still her old self.
I was reminded of Machka as she says it is a full time job just running her life with all the medical and admin stuff. The phone was constantly ringing with stuff to organise!
Journey home by train was a bit tiring as the fast was cancelled and I had to wait for a later one. In Brighton I jumped off the bus to buy sushi, but made it back by 6.30.
Just about broken even on maintenance calories because I did 300 on the rower before I left. Plus a bit of walking in London.
Tired now. Just watching an old Vera.
So glad I went.

Hi Gals,
Viv – your Frankie sounds like my Levi – but if it is just people (no animals) he is the best dog – he cuddles, he keeps track of me, he is super attuned to my moods and responds appropriately - when it is his time I will not miss the reactive aspect of Levi, but I will be very sad.
Allie – the writing is on the wall – the new guy doesn’t get it, business is not doing great (or he would not have been hired), business is doing worse as he is upsetting clients, you and the new guy have not bonded --- it’s time to seriously job hunt. ** I see a few others think the way I do **
Machka – wow those prices !
Heather – glad you went and had a nice time.

Hello Ladies,
Hope all had a good day. Yesterday and today went well for me. My mom must be feeling well as she had me take her shopping two days in a row! She usually doesn’t want to go out. Mostly we only go to her doctor appointments.
Heather-So glad your visit with your friend went well. A few years ago I went through something similar with a very dear friend. The time I spent with her was precious.
I belong to a TOPS group. Today is my one year anniversary. I weigh in tonight. I have been logging everything and staying within my calorie limit since I joined this group a few days ago. Just reading your posts is encouraging.

I'm glad you were able to visit your friend, and yes I understand completely about the full time job just running her life with all the medical and admin stuff. That's why it is hard for her to commit to visits. I'm currently booking into the middle of May right now, but I no sooner get a week set up with a reasonable schedule, then a specialist rings up and needs to put an appointment right into the middle of it all and I spend the next day reorganising everything.
Health systems provide a lot of stuff ... but the one big thing they're lacking are personal secretaries to handle all this stuff and take the pressure off.

Rori: Thanks for your compliment about stalwart care. You are a shining example & I hope to be as caring and supportive of my DH as you are of yours.
Vicki: thanks for your good wishes. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Your cancer friend is so lucky to have a friend like you.
Allie: It sounds like you’re organized and making sure that you have a place to go when/if it becomes necessary. You’re a smart lady. :flowerforyou:
Laura in LA: Happy anniversary with TOPS. I bet you’ll be the champion as you count your calories with us. Having a good support network is so important. You’ll have us online, and them in your community. Win-Win.
Scammers called our house to tell us we won the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. They tried to get us to give them financial information so they'd have access to our bank accounts for "depositing our winnings." We said no. We also sent a message to the real Publishers Clearing House reporting the scam.
Tomorrow DH’s adventure begins. Our critter-sitter will come to our house to stay with the dog, and we’ll go to a hotel near the hospital. DH will take the meds to empty his system at the hotel, and I’ll be supportive. The actual testing is the following day. I may or may not have time to touch bases here, but I will log my food.
