@Orphia sure I can post up the monthly new threads, no problem. It is wonderful that you have so much time in your life now to do all the activities you want, without the strain and weight of alcohol holding you down. Enjoy!
This thread is more like a co-op anyhow, WE ALL help one another and pitch in to make it work. "One Day At A Time"

Had one of those hard seltzers at the ballgame last night- couldn’t even finish it! Berry flavors tend to taste like cough syrup. I should have just ordered water.
I actually love that I’m not enjoying alcohol as much as I used to think I did!5 -

I know I don't "have to" explain, but I feel like it. It's part of the accountability, the learning. I am still trying. I listed to a couple of youtube motivations last night. I needed to do that because part of me was thinking about just not even trying this AF anymore...….really, crossing my thought path often. I am still here though, focusing on drinking "less". What ever that means. Thank you for always being here. This group has been so helpful.

Negative: I chose to go to the liquor store after work
Positive: I asked for a six pack. Surprisingly they don't carry my beer of choice in a 6 pack....so yup....I bought the 12 pack.
Wanted one beer before heading out to the bar-b-q. I asked my husband to pack two of my beers. I packed my mocktail drink stuff and really enjoyed them. It felt good....then I started getting bored and sleepiness crept in. It was weird....so I moved to my two beers. Now almost two hours later I'm ready to drink an ICEE water....I open the cooler and THERE'S One More Beer! Lucky me...right???
We finally get home just after midnight sat on the deck with the dogs for one more....guess what time I woke up??? It was 11:00. What a wasted away day

@katiesmom_99 Glad you're here! I have found this my "safe place". I totally understand the realization of how many calories we're consuming with our alcohol choices along with the follow-up snacks.....and yet the next day recovery food required. I have been here since February and have learned a lot and found a lot of encouragement. I struggle daily, hourly with my challenge to drink less. I would love to spend the entire day drinking....yet when I am AF I feel sooo good and am so proud of myself. I am "work in progress" Welcome aboard!
@whitpauly Thank you!! I appreciate it! Sometimes it is good to hear from a different perspective4 -
I am going to set my June goals for 4-5 AF days per week. I tried 5 AF days per week in May, but didn't quite get there.
May was 18 AF days for me, would have been more, but the warm weather and sweating it out in the garden led to some rum punches, as did being away. It might be challenging during the summer months, but I am going to try to have some discipline.
June 01 - AF - going out of town in the morning, kind of expect to have a few drinks Sunday.
June 02 - 1/2 bottle of red wine
June 03 - 3 drinks - 2 days in a row, such a no-no. Definitely don't want to drift back into daily drinks, I will have to get a handle on it.
June 04 - AF - It was a bit of a struggle to do AF after 2 days in a row of drinks.
June 05 - AF - sort of reluctantly, but I know that the scale won't move unless I do AF days.
June 06 - 3 drinks. I really need to get back on track, my weight is starting to creep up. So glad to have this forum, it really does help with accountability. I have a show at a bar that I have tickets to on Saturday night, but I am going to try to save money and calories and not order any alcohol. I have to be AF today (the 7th) so I can at least make it to 4AF days for the week.
June 07 - AF - Just squeaked out 4AF days for the week. Yesterday I had a tooth extraction and was told no alcohol, but had 3 drinks!
June 08 - 3 drinks - I need to rack up some more AF days.
June 09 - AF
June 10 - AF
June 11 - 3 drinks - Game 7 of the NHL playoffs tonight, but can't have drinks 2 days in a row so will resist.
June 12 - AF - Yahoo St. Louis Blues after waiting 52 years : - )
June 13 - 3 drinks and the NBA championship came to Canada for the first time : - )
June 14 - AF - If I didn't need this day to get to 4AF for the week...well, doesn't matter, glad that I have given myself the challenge. Big weekend ahead in my town. We usually have Bailey's and coffee and watch the parade from my porch. Might or might not. Hit my 4 AF for the second week - just.
June 15 - 3 drinks - I was pouring the Bailey's and coffee in the morning, but had coffee cream in mine instead. Small victory, the first year that I didn't have it on the morning of the parade. I did have a few drinks later though. Looks like I am almost having drinks every second day this month. Need to rack up more AF days for sure.
June 16 - AF
June 17 - AF
June 18 - AF
June 19 - 3 drinks
June 20 - 3 drinks, broke the 2 days in a row rule again.
Running tally - 12 AF days out of 20 days so far. Striving for minimum 16 AF days in the month, so 4 more need to be accomplished for sure.3 -

I finished the Alcohol Experiment this week and it made me decide I want to go the abstinence path so I can really work towards my health goals and be as healthy and happy as I can be. Plus I am really tired of all the tracking and planning and negotiating with myself. I will be away for a few weeks but plan to still pop in.8

@dawnbgethealthy plenty of days left in June for you to hit your 16AF goal. Go for it.
Here was my crazy mathematical way of starting to drink less:
Committed to cutting back...when I had a drink the first time after opening saying I was drinking less I had to be AF for one day...ONE LONG FRICKEN DAY I WILL TELL YOU THAT WAS. Then when I drank and decided to be AF again I had to increase it "one day" each time. That went on for many months tallyingI like that. When I hit 43 AF days in a row I stopped with that method. Now I have a better feel for wanting and needing a drink and why.
Guess I am just trying to say every ones methods are different. And what ever works, keep doing it.
I think your doing great.5 -
@globalhiker that is fantastic you have decided to abstain completely. You have been a real asset to our group. Pop in anytime we do not judge between abstainace and cutting back.
Enjoy your 2 weeks.5 -
Terri sorry to hear about your husband going through such rough times. Thank goodness your there to be strong with him. Hope you both can relax and regroup at the lake.4

My personal achievement last night was not losing my mind and going ape "kitten" after reading some news close to me. IF I had been drinking, I know where it would have gone. Very badly for sure. But it would have been my fault if I had started drinking to kill pain of the news. No one elses.
I calmly told myself to chill out, what do you care if this is happening? Then I giggled a bit and thought....Yeah what do I really care about this? Not one darn thing.
I enjoy this new me so much better than the one who used to drink daily and heavily at that.

I am proud of myself for maintaining moderation for race weekend. Only one wine with dinner on Friday night, two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Of course I totally porked out , had a lot of late dinners and my weight was way up this morning! Holy cow! But at least my drinking was fine.
I cracked open one of those hard seltzer’s at the race venue (we always celebrate when the race is over) , and I just couldn’t drink it. Ok, not a fan of these so I scrounged for some wine- and I couldn’t drink that either! I wanted to celebrate but not with wine. I guess I’ll have to pack my go-to seltzer and cranberry next time!7 -
I haven't checked in for several days, but I've been struggling a bit. I "allowed" myself to drink last Friday night and had three beers, which I enjoyed. I didn't super-enjoy the mild hangover on Saturday morning, but I've endured worse.
I went to my neighbor's son's birthday party with my kids Saturday afternoon. They have a bar in their rec room. I hung out with some of the other parents, chatting and drinking water, feeling good about not drinking any of the beer on tap. With about 30 minutes left in the party, I had a beer. I didn't really finish it, but I also didn't need it, so I was mildly disappointed about that.
Didn't drink Sunday, didn't drink Monday, and then last night, in a moment of weakness, I popped open a 16-ounce tall boy I found in the back of the fridge while I was cooking dinner. I didn't finish that one either, so I don't even know why I bothered to open it. Ugh. Back to only one more day AF than not in June, but we have five more evenings left. I'd like to see the rest of the month through AF (so no drinking on my regular Friday!), and I'm also ready to tackle my eating habits a bit more seriously.
Thanks again to everyone, this board has been great even though I haven't been stopping by as much as I should.7 -
This has been my goal for a while is to have some AF days. Living in an alcohol saturated culture, and alcohol saturated family. I really enjoy wine and stuff but it's so intertwined with stress relief for me. I have morning person already to not drink anything tonight and by the end of the day I just want to get home and have my wine. I have no interest in drinking anything except for two hours in the evening but yah know it would be nice to be able to just enjoy a nice glass of wine instead of the whole bottle.9
-
Wow, @BuddhaBunnyFTW , you just described my day/evening and wish!
Same here. Trying to just not buy a bottle of wine after work, it would be nice to be AF even just a few days a week. Heck, even for one day
I know the weight would melt off if I could not drink a bottle of wine and then eat carbs
So, goal for today AF.8 -
@globalhiker I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!! SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!
@MissMay I kind of had a similar thought in mind, but have since gotten away from my "plan" 3 times at 3 days AF, 4 tries at 4 days AF, 5 tries at 5 days AF...…..etc..... Also, thank you for your condolences for our loss. He was such a wonderful guy that it was one of the largest funerals folks had seen around here. Sorry about the "kitten" news you received, glad you're reminding us how to handle those curve balls life hands us. On the way home from our weekend get away, our granddaughters were in the back seat, reading/listening to an audiobook with Mickey Mouse...…..he said, "when life hands you lemon's make lemon pie". My husband and I went....ohhh Lemon Meringue pie sounds good. I had that for dessert last night for our company. So MissMay, enjoy some lemon meringue pie
@dawnbgethealthy Looks like you pulled it through and got back on track! Kudos to you!
@Womona Good job handling things race weekend. My daughter arrived about 11 pm Friday night, with a box of good box wine...…..I looked away...….I was already about 4 under on the beers, when I was planning to moderate. It was a heck of a ride there, got lost, bad roads, encountered flooded roads. Got close to the rental house, VERY narrow bridge to get the boat across and steep, curvy, rut drenched gravel roads to the house ON THE LAKE......you know that was the important part lol. We ended up till 3 am that night. Haven't done that in a LONG time, but sure had a good time sitting around the deck visiting and laughing.
@renpup Oh my goodness...…..you have done WONDERFUL!! I read so many opportunities to really blow it in your story, and you didn't. You took control of your choices and did great..... I think Keep it up.
I have not been AF since June 12th. Currently too many distractions to put the energy into it. I will get back on board. Never giving up!

June 21 - 3 drinks
June 22 - 3 drinks - Apparently my willpower went out the window! I will get back on track. That 2 days in a row thing sets me up. Definitely need to avoid that.
June 23 - AF
June 24 - AF
June 25 - AF
Running tally - 15 AF days out of 24 days so far. Striving for minimum 16 AF days in the month, so 1 or more need to be accomplished for sure.5 -
Thanks for the kind words, @Womona . And also for all the "hugs" from others. My ex-husband passed on the day after I spoke to him. Maybe our oldest was right, and he was waiting for some particular reason. No way of knowing.
Going forward, looking ahead, "turning over new leaves" as we used to joke...Only AF beer for me for the foreseeable future. I do still have a small cellar full of my favorite wines, which will keep, of course. Do I have a goal, or end date ?? Not really. Just concentrating on my personal "shoulda-done" list. That half-dozen lightbulbs have been replaced, the basement dehumidifier has been tweaked so it works correctly, the huge overgrowth of ivy is no longer in my pear tree....When I can no longer think of something I "should" do instead of having a glass of wine... then I'll sit down and pop the cork. Labor Day ???
Tonight I'll turn off the TV, curl up with a book and some diet soda...Tomorrow morning is a more appropriate time to watch taped political debates...more likely to chase away my frustrations with coffee than wine if it's 7 am....
Keep strong, y'all.7 -
@forestdweller1 my thoughts go out to you. Your a strong one 💜2

Good morning. Mind if I join you? I've stopped and started so many time over the last few years, I've lost count. I tried going AF, but that always seems so hard, and I typically cave after a day. I had made it 2 days, until last night, so for July I'd just like to set some small goals. From now to the first, what will be, will be. Starting July though, I'd like to be dry through the 4th. On the 4th, well, I'd like to not drink to point of a hangover on the 5th. And that's as far into the future as I'm looking right now. We just moved halfway across the country, I'll be starting a new job next week, so I'm just dealing with things as they happen. Over the last few months I've learned I control very little. Alcohol is one of the few things I can try to take into hand.6

@forestdweller1 Great message! I am going to try NA beer this weekend. It's been a long time since I've tried it. Last time I did I liked the Bush NA. My friend likes the Coors.
Had dinner with my friend last night. I had two glasses of wine. She was very proud of me when I told her that was the first wine I'd had in at least 2 weeks. It really has gotten much easier to not drink it/want it/ crave it. That will come in time also with the beer.
It was hard not going to buy whiskey to drink a couple shots in honor of David. That was an automatic when getting together with him. I did refrain though and it is best.
I have one beer left in the fridge. That is all I need for tonight. Kids are gone and our household is back to normal. Time to get back on track and get focused again.3 -
@DCRunnerGirl78 Sounds like your at a perfect time to make some great changes. Less alcohol will also help to make that new job transition go smoother. Sounds like a good plan through the 4th.2

Good Morning,
Well as you can see I abandoned the daily sheet....but I can go back to review my previous posts to get accountability. That does help.
I am feeling a bit of a struggle right now. I was so motivated before about doing the actual AF days, and more... however, since this past week I am not feeling it anymore. Actually this morning as I was waking up …. like most mornings after drinking I do the evaluation....but I had the thought this morning that I am missing/craving/wanting the black-out drunk feeling......I want to be the stay at home, lay in the sun enjoy my beer and just not be responsible for anything.
Well by just typing that I can hear how stupid that sounds. I do want better for my life. I think I just found my motivation again.
I can handle this margarita/pampered chef party tonight (yes your all invited with low cal, virgin margaritas for me and this weekend make smart smart choices.
Have a great day ya'all.3
