Less Alcohol - June 2019 - One Day at a Time
Replies

I am going to set my June goals for 4-5 AF days per week. I tried 5 AF days per week in May, but didn't quite get there.
May was 18 AF days for me, would have been more, but the warm weather and sweating it out in the garden led to some rum punches, as did being away. It might be challenging during the summer months, but I am going to try to have some discipline.
June 01 - AF - going out of town in the morning, kind of expect to have a few drinks Sunday.
June 02 - 1/2 bottle of red wine
June 03 - 3 drinks - 2 days in a row, such a no-no. Definitely don't want to drift back into daily drinks, I will have to get a handle on it.
June 04 - AF - It was a bit of a struggle to do AF after 2 days in a row of drinks.
June 05 - AF - sort of reluctantly, but I know that the scale won't move unless I do AF days.
June 06 - 3 drinks. I really need to get back on track, my weight is starting to creep up. So glad to have this forum, it really does help with accountability. I have a show at a bar that I have tickets to on Saturday night, but I am going to try to save money and calories and not order any alcohol. I have to be AF today (the 7th) so I can at least make it to 4AF days for the week.
June 07 - AF - Just squeaked out 4AF days for the week. Yesterday I had a tooth extraction and was told no alcohol, but had 3 drinks!
June 08 - 3 drinks - I need to rack up some more AF days.
June 09 - AF
June 10 - AF
June 11 - 3 drinks - Game 7 of the NHL playoffs tonight, but can't have drinks 2 days in a row so will resist.
June 12 - AF - Yahoo St. Louis Blues after waiting 52 years : - )
June 13 - 3 drinks and the NBA championship came to Canada for the first time : - )
Running tally - 7 AF days out of 13 days so far2 -

June 10 goal AF / actual AF
June 11 goal AF / actual AF
June 12 goal AF / actual AF
June 13 goal AF / actual 1 beer. So close to making it to my first 4 days straight. It felt so natural to open that beer while hanging with my husband while he worked in the garage. Yet, I also put so much thought in to wanting to make it to my 4th day. I was freed of the challenge of dining with my girlfriends yet still opened that beer. It tasted so good and went down easy yet I recognized that tapping on my head letting me know it was there. Learning.
June 14 goal...…??? / actual 5 1/2 beers.
I was partially successful.
Negative: I chose to go to the liquor store after work
Positive: I asked for a six pack. Surprisingly they don't carry my beer of choice in a 6 pack....so yup....I bought the 12 pack.
Wanted one beer before heading out to the bar-b-q. I asked my husband to pack two of my beers. I packed my mocktail drink stuff and really enjoyed them. It felt good....then I started getting bored and sleepiness crept in. It was weird....so I moved to my two beers. Now almost two hours later I'm ready to drink an ICEE water....I open the cooler and THERE'S One More Beer! Lucky me...right???
We finally get home just after midnight sat on the deck with the dogs for one more....guess what time I woke up??? It was 11:00. What a wasted away day
More evidence telling me how much I want to go AF.

@orpha thank you for starting this group and keeping it going. You and @MissMay are great inspirations. Appreciate you both and all the members that have been in and out of this group since I've been here in February. There have been so many stories and encouragement shared. All of it has REALLY helped me! Thanks3 -
I too want to extend a Big Thanks and Congrats to Orphia and Miss May. Both of you inspire me & have helped turn around my life for the better6
-
I had one and a half beers last night. So on the one hand I'm pleased with myself bc it's way fewer than the 5-7 drinks I'd been having on a Friday night, but on the other hand I'm slightly disappointed because now I don't get to count yesterday as AF...but baby steps. I'm not going to beat myself up. The goal is Less Alcohol in June, and I'm working on it pretty hard!10
-
This week was better for me - lost another pound! And 2 drinks less than last wk. Focusing more on relaxation, deep breathing, increasing cardio exercise to load up on endorphins, getting more sunshine. Trying to get the "self" in balance here.6
-
Miss May, thank you. Xx
I blame alcohol for making me drink, not me, and now I'm free, it's not going to trap me again.
Everyone who can't decide whether to moderate or quit is having alcohol speak for them. They don't know and can't trust themselves anymore. It's alcohol's fault, not theirs.6 -
Nice to see this message board. Great resource list. I loved This Naked Mind. Life is so much better AF. I'm a data guy, track weight, diet, BP, etc. My super spreadsheet tells me: "I quit smoking 1183 days ago. I have had 1 drinking day(s) in the last 598 days. I have had no alcohol for 382 days." All the best on meeting your goals.10

June 15 - 3 dirnks - I was pouring the Bailey's and coffee in the morning, but had coffee cream in mine instead. Small victory, the first year that I didn't have it on the morning of the parade. I did have a few drinks later though. Looks like I am almost having drinks every second day this month. Need to rack up more AF days for sure.

@orpha I re-read your comment about whose fault it is for this alcohol being such a B..... I like your thinking3 -
Over the years I have found I can enjoy social events cook outs sitting in restaurants or bars with friends and not drink. Everyone just accepted I wasn’t drinking anymore for personal health reasons
These were all “ reasons “ I used to think 🤔 were valid reasons to drink now realize they were just excuses to give up self control
My daily runs now are over 60 minutes
This is now my “ happy hour “9 -
You’re all awesome and amazing.
I haven’t had any alcohol since the 4th of this month (6/4). I feel a lot better. Was drinking at least each weekend. Sometimes once or twice a day during the week too. I can’t do moderation. With anything. Sooo, here we go!7 -

Well. have been doing fine with just a few 3 ounce Chiantis maybe 3 days a week. The AF beer has been a great help, letting me pretend that I'm really drinking on a couple other days of the week. Some days I forget that there is anything in the house to sip except for diet soda or oddball teas.
Since the father of my two oldest daughters was suddenly diagnosed with terminal cancer last month and went into hospice care, I've been "stress cooking". Not eating, but making tons of specialty pasta & my signature muffins...and today a cherry cheesecake for SIL #2 . Family and neighbors are getting fat and happy, being "repaid" for all past favors, great and small.
I personally have no emotional connection to him, after almost 50 years, but it pains me to see my daughters unhappy, especially my oldest, who went to Maine from Louisiana to spend some of his last days. He is totally sedated, but not ready to go yet. Tonight my oldest called me, wanting me to "say goodbye" to him. since I am the last person in his life that hasn't said farewell. She seems to think that he is holding on for some reason...With the phone to his ear, I found that there wasn't much of anything meaningful that I could say, except to thank him for giving me two lovely daughters. Pitiful. Just pitiful.
I'm now probably going to finish off a large bottle of Valpolicella and go to bed. My bad. My choice.
Tomorrow is another day [thanks Scarlet} and I will be starting to stack the 3 cords of wood that were delivered today.
Keep strong, y'all.

I had two evenings where I wanted to "relax" with a beer or two after a long day (hiking with the family on Father's Day, took the kids to an amusement park all day yesterday), but I refrained. If I don't drink tonight (and I have zero plans to do so), then I'll now have more AF days in June than days when I drank.
I'm down a smidge in weight and feeling motivated to track my eating more closely. Thankful for this board!4 -
@forestdweller1 that was a lovely thing you did, thanking him for your kids. Even though you no longer had a connection, you stepped up and did it for your kids. Very gracious for them, and for him.3

Didn’t go out after practice tonight because I didn’t want to drink. “saving” this one for the weekend. We have a big Dragon Boat race this weekend and it’s usually a drink-fest afterwards. Going to plan on just two for Friday and Saturday night.
One of my tennis partners brought champagne to wrap up the season yesterday- I took one sip and I just couldn’t drink it. Months ago I would have had two glasses!

I haven't been very good at logging in daily here......probably because I just don't know what to say...how can I explain my bad choices. I know I don't "have to" explain, but I feel like it. It's part of the accountability, the learning. I am still trying. I listed to a couple of youtube motivations last night. I needed to do that because part of me was thinking about just not even trying this AF anymore...….really, crossing my thought path often. I am still here though, focusing on drinking "less". What ever that means. Thank you for always being here. This group has been so helpful.

June 11 - 3 drinks - Game 7 of the NHL playoffs tonight, but can't have drinks 2 days in a row so will resist.
June 12 - AF - Yahoo St. Louis Blues after waiting 52 years : - )
June 13 - 3 drinks and the NBA championship came to Canada for the first time : - )
June 14 - AF - If I didn't need this day to get to 4AF for the week...well, doesn't matter, glad that I have given myself the challenge. Big weekend ahead in my town. We usually have Bailey's and coffee and watch the parade from my porch. Might or might not. Hit my 4 AF for the second week - just.
June 15 - 3 drinks - I was pouring the Bailey's and coffee in the morning, but had coffee cream in mine instead. Small victory, the first year that I didn't have it on the morning of the parade. I did have a few drinks later though. Looks like I am almost having drinks every second day this month. Need to rack up more AF days for sure.
June 16 - AF
June 17 - AF
June 18 - AF
June 19 - 3 drinks
Running tally - 12 AF days out of 19 days so far1 -

Yesterday was another tough one temptation-wise. There's a lot of BS going on with my neighbors lately and I just want to put it out of my mind, but last night I tried to sit with the anxiety and bad feelings and remind myself that I can't control other people, but I CAN control whether or not I drink. So I chose not to drink. And now I have more AF days in June than days that I've had a drink (or 4). I'm pretty happy about that.9

May I join in?
I work in the beverage industry (retail sales), so I'm surrounded with booze on a daily basis. I'm not interested in going completely AF. It would be fairly impossible and I would feel deprived of something I enjoy.
Before I started CC and logging, it was routine for me to have 3-4 vodka martinis a day. Or half a bottle of wine. Or brandy, tequila, etc...basically whatever my alcohol of the day was - x3 or more servings. At an average of 120 calories each, I was downing 360-480 extra calories nearly every single day ! That's 2500-3500 cals per week - YIKES! Drinking gave me the urge to munch, so lots of heavy snacking. The practice has caught up to me over the last 4 years in the form of 25 extra pounds, most of which is in my stomach, hips, and thighs. This has led to depression and poor self image, which I self medicated with more alcohol. Rinse, repeat.
Since beginning actively using MFP to log and following the community posts, I have limited my drinks to no more than 1 per day and 3 per week. I enter them in my diary as 'snacks', and only if it fits into my allotted calories. Oddly enough, I don't really miss it that much. I am still tempted to have a 'tini or a glass of wine while I'm cooking dinner, but that's more habit than anything. I need some positive reinforcement to keep me from backsliding and folks who understand why I've chosen to make a change.10 -
Welcome, @katiesmom_99 !
You sound like me when I started CC in 2015. I did really well losing all the weight and limiting alcohol to if it fit my calorie limit.
I think you're doing better than me, because I always MADE room for one a day by eating a bit less food in favour of one drink. Yay, you!
When I started maintenance I'd also got to the point of running a lot more, and I was able to drink more again.
But I really had to rethink my approach.
I'd changed my weight, my eating, my environment, my confidence, my fitness, my community involvement, but my anxiety was still a problem.
This thread and some awesome therapy helped me see how we get so upset about so many internal and external things at the best of times, (food, relationships, work, family, friends) but a lot more when we drink, because we can't think rationally.
It makes our feelings extreme in so many ways throughout the day, both drinking and recovering.
I'm so happy I did Feb Fast 2018, which hasn't actually ended for me!5 -
@MissMay I still love this thread, and it's helped me so much, but my increasing enthusiasm for life and volunteer activities in my home town mean I need to offload some duties.
Would you be so very kind as to take over the role of starting our monthly new thread each month?
I think everyone would be happy to see you be responsible for its continuation, knowing your lovely support for us all.4
