So here's to June and making (and MEETING) the same goal.
Also, a secondary goal, I would like to complete at least one run that is 10 miles. Currently my longest run to date is 6.2 miles.
What does your training look like? 10 miles could be in reach, or way out of reach pending where you are. If you can just bearly finish the 6.2 even with several rest days before it, then 10 miles is probably not doable this month. If you can finish the 6.2 as part of a training pattern, without rest days preceding it, then you could probably do 10 this month.
The important thing is not to push too far, too fast too soon. Take your time to build a base and you will be much happier down the road.
To be honest I've only been really running for about a year. And I have no idea what I'm doing, the logistics of it, about conditioning. I just put shoes on, step outside and run.
So you think maybe I should aim for less?
I usually only have time to run 2-4 miles. I work 12 hour shifts with a one hour drive back and forth. So I'm only home for 8 hours and still need to sleep sometime in between there, plus I'm a student. On days I don't work I can do 5 or 6, because there's no time crunch.
So, I suggest you look at a 10miler or 15k training plan. One like this:
https://www.halhigdon.com/training-programs/15k-10-mile-training/novice-15k-10-mile/
(it is free, just scroll past the ads. All of the information is on that page and free. The actual plan it at the very bottom, but the notes above it are important too)
That one is for 10 weeks, but you might be able to start a few weeks into it.
Again, the MOST IMPORTANT THING is not to go too hard or too fast. All inexperienced runners do it. That is how you get hurt and burned out. It is better to take 2 months to get to 10 miles and get there healthy than to pound hard and get there in a few weeks but hating running and hurt the day after.
Thank you so much!!0 -

No run yet, lifting today. Was supposed to be lifting yesterday, rest today, but my ankle was touchy after racing so I took my rest day yesterday. Ankle is much better today, still not perfect, so concentrating on lifts which don’t bother it such as Romanian deadlifts.
@Elise4270 I like a big navel orange before running. Oranges are normally too many quick carbs for me to have a whole one, so running lets me enjoy them. In the summer frozen orange slices are heaven! During long runs, I’m a fan of ginger flavored Clif Bloks. Afterwards I like to pig out on all the carbs - which is still not that many, maybe half a serving of pasta, a half serving of fries, or a slice of pizza - but without running I can’t eat these things at all without a glucose spike. My favorite thing is sweet potato fries dipped in bbq sauce.
I don’t run and cook. If I run, I want to sit down and have someone else serve me food.4 -
another monthly question for everyone, newbies too.
What's your favorite/ideal pre and or post exercise food? Do you mind the calories/macros?
Chocolate Milk with all the fat! Perfect post run drink. IMO.
I do not watch macros most of the time, just calories. Chocolate milk has lots of them, so need to earn them!

Pre-run: 1 piece of toast with peanut butter for short weekday runs (6-8 miles). 2 pieces on weekends.
Post-run: Greek yogurt , thin layer of steel cut oats, fruit, nuts.

I did start out the month with exercise. Yeah me!

I usually use my walk to warm up for running. I should have rethought that today, since I haven't actually run in almost a month. The 2 mile walk was at a 3.7 mph pace, so pretty quick. The run wound up being at a 4.6 mph pace. I was trying for 4 minutes of running and 1 of walking, but I had to stop to walk an extra 30 seconds up the hill on the last lap up the driveway. I just couldn't do it one more time.6 -

I am in for 100 again this month.
6.1: 3.1M Race (3.1)
Had a 5K race this morning in support of my local aquarium and sea turtle conservation. Beautiful temperature and not too much humidity. I finished 6/178, 16/723, and 49/1069 for my age group, females, and overall. Time was 23:49. I gave it my all the last .5K and couldn’t break into a 10-12 person pack that all finished between 23:40 and 23:48. I was trying to catch them but just wouldn’t wiggle around them. Felt like death was immnenet for a few minutes after I finished so I’m proud I gave it my all.
Heading back to work tomorrow after 18 days off. It feels like yesterday when I was riding the train home to start my vacation and I told my other half that my time off will go by so fast and before I know it, I’ll be laying in bed looking at the train schedule to go back to work. And here I am- refusing to look at the schedule and acknowledging my return to work tomorrow and instead posting here!
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend and June brings lots of healthy miles, fast times, and no injuries.

I haven't posted here in awhile...perhaps a year. I just finished what was perhaps the worst year of my professional career and I now have the summer to recuperate. I run half marathons regularly but just completed my first marathon this past November. Unfortunately I suffered from a pretty bad IT band injury during the tail end of my training (just prior to taper week) that became progressively worse on race day, so much so that the hurt leg was like running on a stiff, straight leg (the pain ran from my knee up to my hip and was some of the worst I've felt in my life). My other leg, breathing, and mental composure were completely fine, which made for a very frustrating experience. My body on the one side just would not cooperate. I eventually fully recovered and am now looking to try again this fall. I'm sharing this experience because if anyone has any advice on how to avoid this from reoccurring, I am open to hearing your stories and words of wisdom!

I had a 10k event today and, after two days of stormy cold and wild weather, we woke to blue skies. Still chilly and breezy but definitely a step up from thunder and hail. I was hoping for a new PB and ran really well, leaving the 5 min pacer behind after the first two kilometres. However, the route had a last minute change, bad signage and not a single marshall so most of us ran the wrong route. A bunch of people cut it short, coming in around 9km, and a bunch of us ran long and did 11.5km! I ran really well and clocked up a new PB at 48:52, but then had to run another 1.5km to the finish line which was tough at that pace. Did it though, and I'm happy to run long rather than short, but do I get to count it as a PB? I say yes. The only real annoyance is how the results will look online - it's a series and this will seriously screw with the final points tally for the divisional leaders. As I'm actually going to miss two of the six events it doesn't affect me (otherwise I have potential to get a top three series finish as long as a couple of the other women in my age group miss a race!!)
Anyway, upshot is, June is off to a speedy start. Looking forward to the next one in three weeks' time.

Visit a hip specialist maybe get an MRI to rule out physical abnormalities/causes. I've recently had femoral anteversion (right) corrected, before that IT band lengthening and GT bursectomy (right) and sciatic nerve decompression (left). I still need the right labrum repaired & rehaping. Unfortunately it does happen that sometimes we need a medical option. I've just gotten to where if it's something I can't solve, I find a professional.
It sounds, to me, that this injury isn't just a case of overtraining. I'd definitely rule out the possiblity and a good Ortho can probably point you in the right direction even if its something that PT can address, especially if you find one thats a runner or cyclists, they are super helpful. Some are just dumb dums and say "don't exercise". That's not a fix in my book.
Good luck! Glad to see you back!

@ContraryMaryMary nice run! I love ambury Park! I definitely say count it. And yeah I'd be frustrated at the change and added length, not good.
We have our first open home today. Had 3 groups through. One sounds primi3, another wants the house but has to sell hers first and the other we don't know much about. So will see. The agent sounded confident (don't they always).
So this morning was basically 2hrs of tidying and cleaning. Then the open home. Then I went for my 3k walk. I haven't run in 4 days now and am looking forward to tomorrow. Only 5k, but its a public holiday so I don't have to go to work.
And just have to say go Liverpool!! Whoot whoot! (if you know what that's about, yay!)6 -

It is interesting hearing about you selling. Here in the USA it is a different process. At least in all the areas where I have bought/sold homes. For the most part, the homeowner has little to nothing to do other than keep the house clean. For "open homes" (we call them open houses here) the owners are gone the entire time. They do not normally meet prospective buyers. The agents do pretty much everything.

@Lazy_Bones_85 Great race results! Good luck with going back to work tomorrow.
@ContraryMaryMary Too bad about the route change and NO marshall to make sure everyone went the correct way. That is so frustrating. I agree, you should count that as a PB. It would be nice if the race organizers would put a disclaimer on their website, explaining the confusion and results. Did the racers who cut it short get to count it as finishing? If so, I'm sure a lot of them will have a PB online.
@Avidkeo Hope one of the families comes through. Selling/buying a home is very stressful.2 -

Started my June runs off in style this morning with the local annual 4.2km family/charity race. This is the third year I've entered it, and I had to skip another one of a similar distance in a nearby city which I ran and really enjoyed last year as it fell on the same day. The reason I did so was that this one was the first race I ever entered and so I have a soft spot for it. However, the first couple of years I was one of the more walk than runners at the back of the pack. This year, however, I was in what has become my usual mid-pack area and omgoodness did I get annoyed with the small children and teengers who run round in front of you then grind to a dead halt with no notice or walk spread across the entire road. After almost stepping on the same little kid 4 times around the halfway mark I finally got fed up and put on a bit of speed to get past and away from them. Have to laugh because the HR graphic from my fitbit shows a peak around the middle, which was obviously when I got mad at them and sped past LOL. My husband did pretty well, I was expecting us to have to do run-walk intervals after 1km or so, but he actually managed to go (admittedly at a very slow pace) for more than 3km before he asked me to add some walk breaks in, and he even stayed pretty close behind me when my competitive streak kicked in at the end and I started overtaking people :-) My glance at the clock as I crossed the line showed 28:55, slow but still actually faster than either of the previous years I've run it (if I remember right!)
June goal: 75km. Run so far: 4.2km.11 -
@Lazy_Bones_85 great race! You can be proud of yourself for giving it everything you had.
@ContraryMaryMary awesome 10K time! Heck yeah you count that as a PB! You ran the distance. Sucks the race was so poorly organized, but that shouldn't penalize you.
@eleanorhawkins well done on your race as well. Too bad about all the kids and walkers blocking your way. Seems there's always those in every race.0 -
Goal: 100
June 1: 7 miles
June 2: 7 miles
Total: 14 Miles
Remaining: 86
Loving the early mileage this month. Up next 13.1 long run Tuesday.
7 -
6-1 7.5k slow
6-2 11k easy
June Total: 18.5k
June Goal: 150k
January Total: 131k
February Total: 159.5k
March Total: 183k
April Total: 126k
May Total: 128k
Monthly average: 145.5k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Cloudy and 62 degrees F this morning, which made for good running weather. Pasture roses are in bloom and the fragrance is intoxicating. Started off pace slow and gradually increased so that final overall pace was right on the number for "easy."
Congratulations to all the racers for their outstanding performances!!!
As far as foods, I don't run really long distances so I can get away with running on an empty stomach. My usual post run intake is a Gatorade G2 and an 11 oz. Chocolate Muscle Milk.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K7 -
4 pages in and I’m feeling late to the party! I think I’m in denial that June is here—it’s likely to be a tough month, so I wanted to hang on to May as long as possible. I have two big (long) work trips, one to Detroit for a week next week, and the other to New Zealand close to the end of the month. I just squeaked in with my 70 mile goal for May (ran 70.5), so I think I might shift down to 60 for this month to account for flights & jet lag. Also, while the “Bike Everywhere” May team challenge is over, “Bike Bingo” goes through the end of this June—this involves biking to places all over Seattle to get stamps on a bingo card so that you can (bike to) claim prizes. And then there’s the sprint triathlon next month that I’m still considering, so I may need to do a couple of swims (used to be a lifeguard and swam laps for years, so this shouldn’t be much of a reach, but still....) and bricks. Hmm. Also my lower back was unhappy this week about running/biking/long car rides, so I need to also be sure to stretch & foam roll. Apologies for the book-length musings, but it’s helpful to write it all out! Luckily I went out for a gorgeous 9 miles yesterday—running in shorts (not capri leggings) for the first time ever, so that was nice! I think those may be helpful for the Midwest next week...
June goal: 60 miles
6/1 9 mi
June total: 9 mi
2019 Races:
3/16 Kirkland Shamrock Run 5K
4/13 Mud & Chocolate 4.5 mi trail run
5/5 Vancouver BMO Half Marathon
5/12 The Color Run 5K
5/18 Your Canyon for a Day 35 mi Bike Tour, Yakima
6/16 Monroe Bubble Run 5K
7/21 Seafair Triathlon?
8/11 Lake Union 10K?

I have not run since last August but this thread is inspiring. Was just about to pop out and try a mile or two but we are under a severe thunderstorm warning so will either do that in a bit or tomorrow. Goal for June is 25 miles. Seems small compared to others but I will be happy if I achieve it.7

Oh we weren't here, we cleaned and then were kicked out of the house for an hr. This was just the report from the agent lol though we met the one who has to sell first because she arrived 15 mins early and we hadn't left yet haha3 -
@Mari33a I'm doing a June streak! Let's help eachother out eh! What's your minimum? 8 have to do 3k every day (I'm in a group challenge and that's the minimum) which is what, 1.8 miles? My streak is also run/walk which I think is really sensible. The only person who should do a running streak is @AlphaHowls cause shes amazing.
@eleanorhawkins woo hoo well done! I love that your competitive streak is coming through! I'd have probably said something to the kids, cause annoying! But the satisfaction of running past them is the best comment lol.
I'm going for a run today! Probably just a short one cause it's supposed to be a rest day, but I didn't run on the weekend. It's definitely getting colder, 8 degrees c here. @ContraryMaryMary if I think that's cold, I'm going to freeze in New Plymouth! I think I'll have to go glove shopping. So recommend your running gloves! I've seen a cool Nike pair but happy to take other recommendations.
And in the annoying category, I saw that the new Gel Kayano 26s have come out! I've been waiting for this so I can get some 25s at a discounted price. Nope. There are PLENTY of 25s out there are really great prices. But NO wides. Why do have such annoying feet.
ETA just found a pair on amazon that ship to NZ and cost less than $200! God I hope they are accurate6 -
HI everyone!
I am in for 55 miles again this month.
Later this week, we are driving to Iowa to support my sister in a bereavement, "Celebration of Life" for her son who died in an auto accident. It happened in April....she and her husband are still grieving. It is an extremely difficult time for them. She has mentioned grief counseling. Has anyone done it? Does it help?
Today is my birthday. I usually don't work on my birthday, but I had to juggle days......
It felt good to run yesterday after work. 4.19 miles on the trail. Then afterward I walked around the art center where I park my car. There is a park behind it and walked under a trellis, and I think that there was Lilac blooming. It is a purple clustered flower with a really sweet fragrance. There is a structure that is really famous, at least in Indiana...I think called the "twisted house." My husband told me it was at the art center, but I have never seen it until yesterday. If I can figure out how to down-load pics I will show you the area.
6/1....4.19 miles (Monon trail)
Total....4.19 miles
Goal....55 miles.

Yup, you’re gonna freeze in NP. I run in a pair of merino inners from Kathmandu. Much cheaper than official running gloves, yet warm and easily washed. I ran Christchurch in them in 4 degree drizzle and was toasty (and I have Raynaurds).
I see a lot of merino in your future!!5 -

Happy Birthday!
And, while I have not personally gone through it, a good I have been told that a counseling program can work wonders. As a pastor, I refer my people to them when it goes beyond what I can do.

First run of the month was a little rough I was wayyy too excited and came out too fast. My first two miles were both a whopping minute plus under my desired pace so I burned myself out pretty quick but all in all it was a good run.
6/1-5.32 miles
Goal: 50 miles
Tonight was run two trying to maintain my pacing and it was almosy more difficult to slow down and maintain pace than it is to just run and deal with being winded. I think I just need more practice.
6/1-5.32 miles
6/3- 2.5 miles
Goal 50 miles6 -
