Bringing smiles to people's faces is one of my superpowers...
...'cause it sure as *kitten* isn't running!12 -
Yeah, this ticker thing is a pain, but the dog is so cute I can't get rid of it without feeling guilty.
Anyway, got out for 5.9M of intervals. I ran 5 1.7Ks with 3:00 walking recoveries in between. My ultimate goal was 8:15 for each interval for a pace of 7:45 but I ended up doing 8:15, :16, 55, 42, 51. I've been adding .5K to my total interval distance each week. Today I'm just proud I didn't quit when it started getting hard. I just can't seem to be able to run any faster than that. My legs can't move faster and my heart and breathing can't keep up. And I've been running pretty consistently for about 5 years with a 2 month hiatus 1.5 years ago when I broke a few fingers. And I think I use my hip flexors too much (because they are constantly sore even after stretching, foam rolling, and self-massage) when I run and not my glutes at all because I don't feel myself activating them.
Taking my cat in for a dental cleaning tomorrow which will be an all day affair so I've decided to play golf while I wait for her to keep my mind off the worry of her and anesthesia. I originally was going to make-up Sunday's skipped run tomorrow but I'll have to play the day by ear. Has anyone here had their cat's teeth cleaned? Were you worried, or am I being exceptionally sensitive despite it being a relatively safe procedure?5 -
Today I got to run 3.11 miles around my home lake. It was a tough one - I think I overdid it this weekend, because I actually got what I can only describe as shin splints in my right leg. This was the first time I’ve had shin pain that I can recall since I started running back in fall 2017, and when it didn’t go away after the first mile and a half I decided to turn around and shave off a little distance. So that turned my planned 3.75 mile run into a 3.11 mile run/walk, but so it goes. I got out there, and I’d rather have some mild overuse pain than unexplained knee and hip pain.
In related news, I’m back on the calorie counting train. I can’t fit in my jeans and I’m up 10 pounds from the point I’d hoped to maintain, so there we are. I actually talked about this with my running friend on Sunday - it was a little unusual talking to a man about weight loss, but it was nice being able to commiserate about trying to balance calories without driving ourselves mad, plus the difficulties of cutting back when you're injured and maybe feeling a little sorry for yourself. I’d love to be able to maintain without logging, but right now that doesn’t seem to be the case. So it goes.
I've been particuarly frustrated recently with what seem to be the prevailing American attitudes towards weight loss. On the one hand, there's still a lot of discrimination against people who are overweight, and pressure to conform to an idealized body-type. But on the other hand, there's this narrative that diets don't work because we live in an obesogenic society and we should be able to love ourselves regardless of size. And yes, those last two things are certainly true, but where does that put those of us who have had some success losing weight and want to maintain the physical, mental, and/or social benefits we've gained?

Good luck to your kitty! I haven't had any of my cat's teeth cleaned but I have had a dog's teeth done and they were fine. If your cat is female, they were probably anesthetized when they were fixed, so chances are any unusual reactions would have come up then, right? Either way, there's nothing wrong with feeling anxious and I think it's a good plan to keep yourself busy during the procedure.3 -
@MegaMooseEsq Thank you!!0

This month I will be aiming for 60 miles. My marathon plan officially starts w/o 6/24. I feel like I'm in a pretty good place to start it - the 1st week of the plan has 3x 3 miles and a 6 mile long run, and last week I did 3x 3 miles and a 7 mile long run, so I feel I'm starting off with a decent base. Now, I just need to keep sticking with the food tracking and lose the rest of the lbs I put on w/my last injury (2.4 down so far).
I too am trying to drop weight. I'm down 3.5lbs in a month. I'm finding it so hard to lose while training for races. Let me know if you have some tips or tricks, especially for the day after long run day.
One thing I find that helps me is to use the calorie cushion from my long runs over more than one day. I view my calorie goals more holistically, looking at it by week, so that as long as I'm at or under for the whole week I don't stress if one particular day is over. So, since I don't necessarily eat back all the calories I burn from a long run (especially when I start to get back to the much longer ones - right now I've only hit 7 miles so far since my return post-injury) I'll use that excess deficit for the next day too. So, even if I'm technically 'over' the day after according to MFP it doesn't really matter since I'm looking at it in over a longer time frame.
I use the weekly approach as well. Even though I'm not trying to lose right now, I have found it is also helpful for maintenance. My calorie burn can be so different from day to day that focusing on a single day would just complicate meal planning too much.5 -
Did my Monday run today. I woke up Monday morning with my ankle hurting so badly I was having a hard time walking. I took it easy, little ice and some Tylenol. It was still hurting when I went to bed but had magically healed this morning.
Ran at the gym so I could bail at a moment's notice if I needed to but it was fine. Weird but glad it was nothing serious.

@Lazy_Bones_85 - I worry too when my pets have to have anesthetic for any reason. I have found an anesthetic free dental cleaning that works well. We have had that done for our pup once a year but they also do cats so next time you might consider looking into something like that.
@MegaMooseEsq - I agree that the attitudes about weight and body image are confusing on many levels but I look at it from a different perspective. When I started making changes I did not go on a 'diet'. The foods I ate were not terrible so it was more a matter of understanding and changing the amount of food I was consuming. I did not project on myself to try to look a certain way but I am happy that I can wear just about anything I want now. If I am honest though, some of that is my age and knowing I am never going to look like Scarlett Johanssen no matter what I do.
We can definitely love ourselves (and others) no matter our size but there is also loving ourselves enough to want to be as healthy and strong as possible. I am proudest though about being healthy, being able to lift really heavy things and getting off all the medications, etc. and the surprise when a medical provider realizes I don't take any of the 'normal' medications most people my age have to take. I think we are starting to see more emphasis on people getting healthy, strengthening their bodies in all ways but it is a slow change to that message.7 -

Thank you @Scott6255, @quilteryoyo, @shanaber and @teresa507. @teresa507 Kathrine Switzer was so cool. She told us about routes she used to run in Syracuse and a coach she had that just didn't think women were physically able to run a marathon. She did the distance in training with him and he collapsed and she felt great.@katharmonic - Great race report and great job continuing to push yourself! I think the HM I ran over Mother's Day weekend would be a fun destination race, albeit a bit difficult to get to (fly to LA drive to Santa Barbara or Santa Ynez). I think I would be more likely to run it again if I had running buddies to run it with but there was great camaraderie and it was a pretty small race. I haven't run it but I have heard the Wine Country HM in Napa/Sonoma is also a good one but it is in July and I think it would be incredibly hot and so crowded for visiting wineries, etc.
A wine country HM would be right up our alley for sure, but the heat does sound less appealing. Also, the USA Women's HM on your list in November would be fun - I remember looking that up when you mentioned it before. California races are so far for us that it would be tough to plan and get commitments but maybe we can work up to it. We were talking about the NYC women's HM that @teresa507 mentioned as a next possibility.

Just a warm-up run today on the treadmill before lots of upper body work during strength training today. I was considering running a little more later with some friends but it started raining and I bailed.
Instead I went to Home Depot and bought myself a new garbage disposal and stair rail brackets - both have needed to be replaced for months and months - and some potting soil and pots. I managed to put up the stair rail but the garbage disposal job may have to wait for the weekend. I'm a little afraid that it may involve tears and cursing like when I replaced my kitchen faucet. I also planted some jalapeno, bell pepper and tomato plants my trainer at the gym gave me that he started from seed. I'm hoping I might be able to keep them alive and enjoy some produce from them, but my gardening history suggests this is a long shot.8 -
@PastorVincent Thanks for the links. I am currently working on a Jeff Galloway 10K plan, sort of. I'll probably do some sort of combination of the two. I like the explanations above the plan in the link you provided. This group is great help for us novice folks. GREAT NEWS about Mrs. Pastor Vincent!!!3

Well, I am late to the game this month.
The last two months, I've been able to get 110 miles, so I'd like to set my first goal to 110 miles and my stretch goal at 120 miles. Marathon training is in full swing; I gotta get on the ball.

@Lazy_Bones_1985 good luck with the kitty. I haven't had my cats teeth cleaned, but definitely understand the anxiety. We had the baby neutered and the vet phoned letting us know he had a cryptorchid (retained testicle). I worried all day, but found some reassurance that the little I knew about what could go wrong, the vet knew that too and things I didn't know. She'd also done this frequently. So, trust your vet. Best of luck to your kitty.
@MegaMooseEsq Regarding weight. I think the best we can do is what is healthiest for ourselves, mentally and physically. We all have personal expectations, and as long as we are mindful not to impose them on others, I think harmony can be achieved no matter our size difference. My DD has lost 50-60 pounds and was telling me a bit about how real fat shaming is. While I countered with how some larger women judge the thinner ones. So unfortunately, it's a no-win situation. Take care of you. Wait. That's the "win".
@katharmonic good luck with the vegetable plants! I stick to grass, weeds, this wierd yard algae.... 😊7 -
June Running Totals (miles)
6/1 – 5.08 group run
6/2 – 6.30 easy
6/3 – rest day
6/4 – 6.13 easy
June running total to date – 17.51
Nominal May mileage goal: 100
Real Goals: Get back to running regularly without injuring myself.
Today's notes – Today was the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. I got up, had a normal breakfast, did my normal strength stuff in the morning, and all was fine. Squeezed a 6 mile easy run in before lunch, because I was due to volunteer at the race from 4 to 8:45 PM or so. Well.
The miles were easy by pace, HR about 10 bpm higher than it would be if I were really in shape. The weather was nice. About 5 miles in, a spot in my right quad started aching a bit. Didn't worry, I was almost done. Yeah, you can tell where this was headed. A piece of my right quads, I think the vastus medialis, is sore. I can flex my leg any way I please, as long as there isn't weight on it. Go up or down a flight of stairs, and it announces its presence rather loudly.
This is getting frustrating. The right foot with the stress fracture is recovering nicely right on the path I want it. And I keep banging up some other part of the running chain. I have no feel for how far back I need to cut the volume while I'm rebuilding my capabilities. So, hard decision. Rest days tomorrow and Thursday, re-evaluate where I am on Friday. DNS McMullen Mile on Friday, even if I feel great. Too much has happened recently when I started out feeling great. I still have hopes to be able to run Medved 5K to Cure ALS, but that could also turn into a DNS.
My club mans the finish chute, with Coach organizing the effort. I couldn't see the finish line from where I was, but I could hear the winners announced. The overall men's and women's winners were members of my club, as was the second woman. I didn't hear who the second man was, but there were several club members finishing pretty early.
The volunteer crew working the finish chute at the Corporate Challenge was smaller than previous years. In light of learning of my Raynaud's syndrome, I stepped away from restocking the water and MVP (Wegman's brand version of Gatorade) in ice tubs, and worked restocking the Kind bars further down the chute. I predicted that the slower, later finishers would take more Kind bars than the earlier, regular runner finishers. I was correct, but surprised at the magnitude of the difference. Oh, well. It's an expensive race for being short and not even having age group awards, I won't begrudge some probably lower-paid individuals their freebies.
As is typical, we had more bananas than we could give away. I took home as many as I thought I could fit in my freezer, and my judgment was close. I ended up freezing two bananas I already had on hand to go with the ones from the race. They're not calling to me right now, but they'll be wonderful when the weather turns hot.

5k along the Wolf River. It was storming when we had planned to go out, so we had to wait until the lightning had passed before we could run, and as a result ended up finishing our run in the dark after the park is technically closed. There’s a gate which is supposed to automatically shut at sundown and I was afraid we would find it shut when we got back to the car, but it was still open twenty minutes after dark when we left, so now I’m not sure how it works. I do know we were passed in the dark by one guy who obviously had planned to be running in the dark, since he had a headlamp and lighted vest. Apart from him, the frogs and bats, and one male deer, we were all alone out there.
The weather was pretty, but not ideal to run in. After the rain the temperature dropped about twenty degrees, but the pavement was still so hot that clouds of steam were rising from it. It was like trying to run in someone’s pool house. Tried to go a little faster today and it just didn’t happen - ended up with one of those frustrating runs which is neither fast nor easy. Got it done though! It’s supposed to storm all week, so very likely we will be running in the rain soon.
@katharmonic We replaced our disposal last year and depending on how the previous one was installed it could be simple or annoying. Ours was halfway between the two - simple but required four hands because there was no way to hold the thing in place while connecting it.8 -
Two more gorgeous runs this week—after work yesterday I did an easy 5 miles, and today I did my first tempo run, which was a 5K. It was so much fun! It was a great break from long slowish (but not as slow as I feel like they should be) miles, and my pace was 9:23, which I was thrilled to be able to maintain (3rd mile was 9:14, so 9 isn’t too far from that!). My summer plans are still hazy with the potential triathlon, and another possible half marathon in September, but the one race I’m pretty committed to and have been wanting to run for a couple of years is a 10K that takes place around my birthday—and this year is right on my birthday. I really want to PR and get below an hour, and with that 29:05 5K today, it seems like that’s in shooting distance. So a good and exciting running day!
Only downside is that I got some new shoes, and the right one is too small . Not sure I can return them, and my dog immediately ate the box they came in, so that makes it even less likely, I guess. Off to check the store’s return policy...

Wednesday is usually a rest day for me but as today is Global Running Day I felt I was missing out, especislly after two rather dry phone interviews which saw my cerebellum start to fuse. However, when I saw the rain had stopped, I seized the opportunity to head out for a fast 5k between showers. Almost made it too - it started raining with 800m to go. Fortunately it was only drizzle and not the freezing torrential downpours of this morning. Was fabulous, especially as it was followed by a long hot shower and a short snooze in a freshly made bed. Now to go write those stories...11

Global running day today!! I did an 8k run this morning in billowing wind that pushed me sideways a couple of times! Entertaining it was!
So are you guys doing anything to represent global running day?

Cloudy; 65 degrees F; and humid today. Had some hip niggles, but every time it felt like they were wanting to travel down to my knee, I cut back my stride and pace a bit until the feeling passed. Back was also a little tight, but loosened up and, by the time I was in my sixth kilometer, had a little niggle on the lower left. That means I'm just about back to normal back-wise, because that's where it's hurt for the past 50 years.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K8 -

so here we are, it's June and I have yet to post a goal on the thread after being AWOL the whole of May.
Well, I have not yet run is the reason. And the reason I have not yet run is that I have been sick since the weekend and it shows no sign of leaving quickly. Fever, headaches, joint pain, shivers. I've ruled out Lyme disease because my housemate is cursing me as she's showing signs of having caught it and is heading off on a dive holiday on Saturday. I'm surprised she has let me live. I haven't told her the truth of what it feels like. The constant sneezing, headaches, the sinus pain, the blocked ears and eustacian tubes (yes, THAT works well for diving....).
ENOUGH!!!
I need to be well for a scrambling weekend in Snowdonia so I can post MORE pictures of beautiful scenery I am not running in.
My time will come.
Meanwhile, anyone want a marathon place?10 -
6/1- 8.0 miles
6/2 – 2.0 miles + lower body PIYO
6/3 – 5.0 miles + yoga
6/4 – 1.2 miles TM + upper body PIYO
6/5 – 5.0 miles + yoga
Happy Global Running Day! I convinced one of my running buddies to meet me at 4:45 am instead of our usual 5:00 am so that I could finish up in time to make it across town to a 6:00 am yoga class. All the stretching after running was just what I needed! The timing was also good because it’s raining now and forecasted for the rest of the day. I really don’t mind running in the rain at this time of year though. It actually feels pretty good.
@katharmonic – The NYC Women’s HM is definitely one of those I-would-run-again half marathons. I’ve been to Central Park several times but I still haven’t seen parts of it that I saw while running. Unless they have changed it, it is a double loop but its so beautiful and there are tons of crowd support so you really don’t mind running the same route twice.
@MobyCarp – Sorry about the injuries that keep popping up. Curious on the frozen bananas. Do you just put an entire banana in the freezer and then pull it out, peel and eat?
6 -
June goal: 90 miles
6/2: 8.51 miles
6/4: 5.52 miles
6/5: 5.26 miles
19.29/90 miles completed
I ran 5.26 miles today for Global Running Day! It was a pretty good run. We were expecting storms all night and today, but they didn't come. I was really glad there were no storms, and I was glad it wasn't raining too since we have had so much rain lately that the ground is still pretty saturated and flooding is a concern. But it was hot and humid. There was no breeze either. A light breeze and some light rain might have cooled things off a bit. And I forgot my water. I don't always drink a lot of water while running, but I do usually drink some and I often pour some down the back of my neck when I start getting hot. But all in all it was a good run. I played Zombies Run and I evaded all the Zombies so that is my speed work for today. It is supposed to be a little cooler tomorrow morning, but we'll see. It was supposed to be raining when I got up today and it wasn't.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather6 -
@Teresa502 I don't know how @MobyCarp does his bananas, but I peel bananas and freeze them. If they are big I break them in half before freezing. Then take them out and allow just enough time for them to be soft enough to bite. They are so good that way and I never have to throw away bananas that have gone bad anymore.2

@juliet3455 (and anyone else living in Alberta) - Hope you are safe! I saw on the news that they have evacuated over 11k people from the fires!0

@Elise4270 @shanaber
thanks so much for the advice. I did have the hip evaluated shortly after the marathon. They didn't find anything serious. I saw our physiotherapist at school who also then recommended working on building my glutes and rolling, especially after long runs. I find strength training so boring but I know it's what I need to do if I want to avoid injury. Thank you for reminding me of this very cogent advice!
