After a rest day, full night's sleep and lots of good food, I am still running in slow-motion and gasping for air in Denver. But the scenery was nice.
Today we made the trip up Pike's Peak, and had some great views UNTIL we reached the top, just as a thunderstorm was coming in. We were only there a few minutes when they informed us we needed to get back on the shuttles to be evacuated immediately (lightning and developing icy road conditions). So I told my husband I'd be back, went outside, turned on my watch and ran around for 200 meters just to get this: I don't know how people run a marathon up & down that mountain. I can't imagine even wanting to train for something like that!

@quilteryoyo - I love the medal and bib! So cool! Great job!!
@eleanorhawkins - I joined a women's running group and went to one breakfast hoping there would be someone at least close to my age and pace. Nope all significantly younger and talking about their BQ times. I have not gone to a single group run. There is no way I could keep up with them and I can run by myself without getting in my car and driving an hour across LA. I have since avoided pretty much any group run because I have convinced myself I am just too slow. When we were on vacation last week I was invited to join a couple of the local running club runs and I just couldn't do it.
@Elise4270 - I gave up trying to suggest clothing my dd. She went with me a few times and learned from experience what worked for her. I know it was working when she asked for some tops from Nike or UA and while there we got her a pair of capris. Now she wears leggings or shorts and tank tops. Awesome getting out and walking! Even if you are slow it is progress.
@polskagirl01 - that is a great idea! I don't do well at altitude either. It takes a long time to adjust but I guess you must since so many runners train at altitude.
Got my long run in this morning but got out late. We had a close friend pass away this last week and his daughter called to let us know and it kind of derailed my morning almost to the point of not running. So I went and I dedicated it to our friend. The weather wan't too bad, low 70's to start with only 50% humidity but Hobbes wouldn't even go with me. In retrospect it was good that he didn't because it was pretty warm as the morning progressed hitting 80F by the time I got home. I did try to stay in the shade when I could as the sun was beating down and really hot. 9.56 miles - I will update my totals in the morning.
I am having an issue with my left knee - the one with the (old) torn meniscus. Not sure exactly what I did to it but it is tender on both sides of my knee cap. Hoping tomorrow's rest day will make it happier.9 -
@Elise4270 Glad your daughter went out and walked with you yesterday. Have you thought about biking shorts? They are little bit longer and tend to cover the thighs more. I have a pair that I run in and really like them.
@zeesparrow Thanks! Those are neat. I am turning 60 in two weeks. I ran my first and only other 10K when I turned 50. Both comparisons showed that I "beat" my 50 year old self by 4 to 7 minutes. More importantly to me, my % compared to others has gone up by about 5% too. I feel like I am in better shape and had run more than I had in 2009, so was a little disappointed that the numbers didn't show it. This comparison helps me feel better about the run!!!
@hanlonsk Love the new Garmin. I have one too, but only do the basics, so I would be no help with a tutorial. It does give you some great information though.
@polskagirl01 I have been to Pikes Peak and agree with you. I have no idea how people run up there. I could barely breath just standing there. I love that you "ran" before you had to evacuate.
Thanks @shanaber . The medal and Bib were one reason I decided on this race. They are very cool. The other side of the medal has "the foot imprint." Hope your knee feels better after a rest day!

So, despite my slow start and a long lasting migraine slowing progress last week, I am sitting at about 25 miles for the month between walking and running. So, not completely horrible, but not where I need to be, for sure. I still need to work on increasing leg mileage and decreasing fork mileage.
In other news, my new shiny came in.... and tried my first run with it tonight.
Anyone have good suggestions for Garmin for dummies/luddites? (Aka wtf do I do now???)
What works for me is downloading the full user's manual and going through all the watch's features while following along in the manual.2 -

@quilteryoyo great job on the 10K, and nice bling!
That's pretty awesome that your 60 year old self beat your 50 year old self!! 💪
@hanlonsk your new Garmin looks exactly like my Forerunner 235. If so, you are going to love it. Yeah, just read the manual, it is really intuitive. And go to Garmin Connect IQ store to download all kinds of widgets, clock faces, and apps.
@shanaber sorry to hear that your knee is giving you trouble 😞
13.1 miles this morning. First half was a slog, but at 7 miles I felt stronger and the second half of the run felt much better.

Looks like I have about 42 miles to hit my goal. Given my training plan I am not sure that is going to happen. I really don't want to overdue it and aggravate anything.
I did take an Aleve last night before I went to bed and my knee feels so much better. I think a lot of the stiffness was from inflammation. We'll see how it feels in a couple of hours when the Aleve is completely worn off. I am going to try getting in the pool today and try my aqua running belt that I bought and couldn't use when I had the stress fracture. It should be fun and if the running doesn't work out I can just relax and float around 😁

Ran some trails today for the first time since ankle injury - Achilles’ tendon seems okay but won’t really know until tomorrow. Landing and jumping on my forefoot from different angles still puts a lot of stress on my tendon. 3.1 miles running, followed by 3.7 miles walking. The weather was hot and humid but not as bad as it has been. I almost stepped on a lizard which darted in front of me!8
-
I forgot to post the pictures I took when I was out for my run yesterday. There were so many egrets and geese! This guy was just hanging out watching all the activity on the river. They always remind me of puffins or tiny penguins.
So many geese - pretty much all of the birds pictured in the water here are Canadian geese and there was another huge flock further downstream. I do see one snowy egret in the picture too.
Not a bird but Hobbes relaxing after his 'non-run' Note he wrapped himself up like this and is stretched out the full length otherwise the couch!11 -
Going stir crazy in this heat not being able to get outside and do stuff.

Like others said, get the manual and just play with it, while inside, and not on the run. Once you set out on your run you really want to not have to press any buttons (cept maybe lap if you use that feature). Let it update you with beeps (or via the cell phone app words). Pick a display that has as little on it as possible to use while running. I have messed up many runs when I tried the fancy "race faces" and whatnot. Pace, workout time, distance are all I have mine display.1 -

Packer 5k Race Report
I wasn’t sure how Saturday was going to go. After running around at a fundraiser on Friday night, I could feel that my left ankle and Achilles was sore. I iced the ankle and back of the foot on Friday and figured I would see how the morning went. When registering I decided to put us in wave 3. We could have done wave 2, but it was right on the edge for me so decided I would rather try and catch wave 2 vs. being passed by a bunch from wave 3 right away.
Friday was pretty hot here, with indexes over 100 (high for WI). The storms that rolled through brought the temperature down so it was in the mid 80’s to start. It felt pretty humid, but not as bad as Friday. It’s a well run event bringing Packer fans in from all over. It’s also the second event in a six run series, so that was the main draw for me. The run has been typically held the morning after a 5k fundraiser night event that I co-coordinate with someone else so the morning came quickly.
The Achilles let me know it was there on the run, but it wasn’t a sharp pain more of a nagging tightness. The first mile would be my quickest and the other two weren’t too bad considering. It would have been nice to beat my time last year, but I finished under 30 min so I’ll take it. Now to do some reading on how to rehab as it’s been very tight since. Never had this issue before.

@PastorVincent has the heat got to you?
I'm going to be sore tomorrow and it's all my fault.
I decided to start lifting again now I have access to a cheap gym. So started with lower body. I was good, kept lighter than usual to slowly build up - last time I started lifting after a few months off I went with my usual weights and couldn't sit down for 3 days, stairs was excruciating and I had pain for about week. I learned my lesson. I also didn't do all 3 sets I had planned, I could feel the burn after 2 so I stopped.
Then I did a 20min dreadmill run while watching Good Omens (not a bad way to treadmill). I stopped cause my glasses kept sliding off. Sigh. Then stretched ans walked home.
When I got home, hubby said "fancy a game of squash?". Now we've looked forward to playing squash again ever since we knew we were moving here. And the gym I go to has a squash court. And it's free for family! (hospital gym). So I couldn't say no.
3 games (25 mins later) I've learned that losing weight and regular running has improved my squash game - haven't played in 8 years but I am definitely better than I used to be. I've definitely got more stamina than hubby, but he still has WAY more reach on me.
And yep. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow. May try out the pools...10 -
@quilteryoyo great job on your virtual 10k, very cool.
@polskagirl01 - love your Pike's Peak quick run before evacuation.
@shanaber glad your knee was feeling better after some Aleve. The pool sounds wonderful, hope you enjoyed it. Loved your picture of Hobbes on the couch. Stella was worn out from some hiking today and was similarly lounging around.
@rheddmobile hope your ankle is good after your trail run.
Good job on your sub-30 5k time @jele30. Hope your achilles is ok, too

I wanted to spend more time trying out my Altra trail shoes so I took Stella out for a hike this morning at a state park that has a lot of rocky trails, as well as a lot of stone stairs and a swampy trail section. I avoided going into the swamp part and stayed on the dry trail beside it, but it was tricky footing there with lots of roots and ridges. The rock formations are pretty cool and require a little bit of jumping for Stella, which she was pretty game for but really tired her out. The total hike was about 3.5 miles and it was getting pretty warm by the time we finished. We were both happy to get home and take a little nap.
I planned to wait until evening for my run, but really wanted to get it over with so I could eat dinner and have a beer, so I went out about 4:30. It was a little cooler after a front came through and there was a nice breeze as I sat in my yard, but of course this breeze didn't feel nearly as refreshing while running. I wore my trail shoes and did mostly flat trails around the lakes, but with one steep hill in there which I "ran" down but walked up. At the far end of the lake there is a beach for swimming and it was packed with people. It's really hot in that part of the trail around the beach so I took a quick stroll into the water to cool off. Might as well experience getting the trail shoes wet again. I was pretty happy with how they drained yet again. Less so with my socks.
So that's done and now I'm having that beer (a little disappointing, frankly) and will finish off the peanut butter pie waiting for me.9 -
My husband and I went out this afternoon for the 3 miles on our HM plan. We had a storm front blowing in today, so it was ridiculously hot and humid this morning. Decided to put it off until the afternoon when the humidity was dropping to reasonable levels. The clouds rolled in and there was a little breeze so we hustled out the door and my daughter came along on her scooter. About a mile in, it starts sprinkling and we think, “Great! The rain feels amazing”! Right before the halfway point, the bottom dropped out. It felt great, and all you can do at that point is laugh. We finished the run because we were halfway out on an out-and-back route and were completely soaked by the time we made it home. I’m sure people driving by though we were insane, but oh well. Nothing to do about it. Just mistimed the storm. Honestly, except for the wet shoes which I currently have stuffed and drying, I would rather run in that than the heat!

Posting this weekend's runs:
Sat. - Went to Memphis again to run around Shelby Farms Park. Headed out on the Greenline (paved bike / pedestrian trail) and decided to venture off on some of the dirt trails I saw. This is right alongside the Wolf River, and there was a spot with really slippery mud. I ended up falling pretty hard. No injuries, except to my pride. And I was very muddy as a result. After I got back on the Greenline and as I was going back through the park, I got a lot of funny looks... probably because I was covered in mud. People can judge if they want; they missed out on the good trails anyway. I was intentionally going slow this time as I tried to stay in aerobic HR zones during long runs. Ended with 13.02 miles.
Sun. - Ran in town. It was hot, but not as bad as last Wed. Post run selfie below. I did some laps around the local park trail with some intervals above VO2 Max. I'm going to do more intervals during the week for a bit.

Haven't been checking in much lately, work was trying to kill me last week (nothing new there), we are in the middle of some awesome (cough) weather, and I've done something funky to my ankle.
One thing at a time.
Ran twice last week to bring my monthly total to 56.7km. Then ended up skipping my 20km long run yesterday - in the early afternoon I went out to pick up some stuff from the convenience store about 800 meters from my front door, and it was so hot I could hardly think straight by the time I got back. It felt exactly like the inside of an oven, or how I imagine a turkey to feel like on Thanksgiving afternoon. It was still too hot to run by 10pm, so I gave up and went to bed.
We're supposed to have a cooler day on Thursday, and I'm thinking about pullling some strings at work to fit a long run in the morning.
I'm not quite sure what's been happening to the ankle. It's been acting up on and off since April, and I remember taping it up for the HM in May. It managed to make itself known around the tape at the time. The symptoms flare up a little with use and get a little better with rest, but otherwise it's just been stuck there, not exactly painful but I can tell it's not "a whole ankle". Suggestions? Seems far too small a thing to warrant a trip to the doc.eleanorhawkins wrote: »In running news:
I am SO in love with my Garmin. Thanks again @noblsheep! I have yet to find time to read the manual (work is crazy this month!) so haven't yet figured out the pace alert thing, which I want to, however I did discover that I can set it to my run-walk intervals. Getting some funny looks when I bleep every x seconds in busy areas, but it sure beats having to use the interval timer on my phone! Actually being able to see my pace on my wrist instead of having to hold and look at my phone screen is awesome, as is the fact that it seems to be far more accurate at any given moment than Zombies Run! :-) Still a lot more to learn about it but so far so super!ETA. My daughter has shown interest in getting out for regular walks with me, but she has nothing to wear. I try to help, but think I just am unhelpful. Today she changed her mind at the last minute... So I assume she'd be more comfortable in capris, even if it is hot. Today she was going to walk in jeans... Uhhh it's really hot out, that not wise. Any favorites? Or suggestions? Yesterday she wore black leggings a black shirt and Spanx. I understand wanting to look good outside the house, but it too hot for anything but bare minimum.PastorVincent wrote: »zeesparrow wrote: »How do you encourage other runners, either online and/or in person?

@shanaber Love the pictures. Hobbes is adorable!
@jele30 Great race results! Hope your Achilles feels better.
@Avidkeo That was a lot of exercise in one day! I hope you aren't too sore today!
Thanks @katharmonic . Sounds like a nice hike and run. Sorry the beer wasn't as satisfying as you had pictured in your head. I hate it when that happens!
@martaindale Love that you enjoyed your rainy run. One of my favorite runs years ago was when I got caught out in the rain. I started singing "Singing in the Rain" and dancing down the road. I'm sure my neighbors thought I had lost my mind!
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Sorry that you fell in the mud, but glad you weren't hurt. Other than that, sounds like you had a couple of great runs.
@PastorVincent Hope the weather peeps are right and you can get in a nice run.2 -

No runs to report the last few days. It’s been hot and humid, and I’ve been struggling with mental health issues (it’s getting better) and pain in my left hamstring. Also, I adopted a new cat this weekend kind of out of the blue - a facebook friend posted that he needed to find a new home for one of his cats due to moving and conflicts with the established cat, I thought “hmm, do we want another cat?”, my husband was all in favor, and a few days later, we had this little guy settling into our spare room!
Our new cat, Simon!
If he looks familiar to anyone who's been following cat pictures here, it's because he's the spitting image of our cat River.
Nerds will understand why we named him Simon.
This week is currently looking blissfully low-key. I have a couple of appointments but they’re in the afternoons on Tuesday and Thursday, which are my flexible days. I also have an appointment to see the physical therapist on Wednesday before gym, so that should be good. The temperature and heat index aren’t set to go over the low 80s the next couple of days, with the dew point in the mid-50s, which should make for beautiful running weather tomorrow AM.
The only goal I hit last week was my walking goal, but that’s not nothing.11 -

It is already 77.... so not so sure about this 68F prediction *shaking head*5 -

I had my family reunion this weekend, so I got a little behind on the thread. But I did get my long run in yesterday. I ran 10.3 miles and it was a wonderful run. I wasn't able to get up quite as early as I hoped, but I did get out about 7:15 am. The weather wasn't too bad. It was 76°F, feels like 76° with 68% humidity and the dew point was 65° which was actually a lot nicer than it was all last week. I was expecting it to seem worse especially since the sun was already up, but there was some shade, and while it was hot it wasn't as bad as July in Texas can be. I really needed a good, head-clearing run and this was definitely a good one. I didn't see a lot of critters, but I did see a cottontail and two jackrabbits. Today is a rest day, which is good. I overslept this morning and had to do a shorter yoga. I usually do an hour on Mondays since I don't run but only had time for about 30 minutes. We are expecting cooler weather the next few days, so I am hopeful that my runs the next three days will be nice.
