According to my Garmin, it was 75°F with a humidity level of 89% and no wind. Garmin says the feel like was 75°F, but I beg to differ! It was HOT!!!
75F with 89% humidity is horrible. With that much water in the air your body's cooling systems fail miserably. Well done getting your race done and PB's despite the heat!
I'm not running... But did get out for a walk today. It feels cooler than yesterday's walk. I'd keep going if I weren't so gimpy.
ETA. My daughter has shown interest in getting out for regular walks with me, but she has nothing to wear. I try to help, but think I just am unhelpful. Today she changed her mind at the last minute... So I assume she'd be more comfortable in capris, even if it is hot. Today she was going to walk in jeans... Uhhh it's really hot out, that not wise. Any favorites? Or suggestions? Yesterday she wore black leggings a black shirt and Spanx. I understand wanting to look good outside the house, but it too hot for anything but bare minimum.
Jeebus. Hot fat fingers do not text well. Corrected errors.5 -
Well, I did not get out to run, so I took out my Canon SL3 and created a chase scene for fun. My son is riding both bikes, and I am "stumbling as I try to get away" - this is a single shot, in IR.
Specs: Canon SL3, ISO200, F4, 30seconds, Hoya R72 filter. Single shot, ghost effect is natural not photoshopped. Desaturated to make black and white.9 -
For those of you getting out in this heat, I am impressed! I was out for 10 mins taking various pictures and now I need a shower! LOL2
-
@ereck44 - don't forget the Darn Tough socks either! He was always amazed at their no questions asked return policy no matter how long you had them!
Oh yeah, I forgot about that! Too funny!
What I also remember and still makes me laugh. I think it was last July when the discussion was about hot dogs, and @MobyCarp was welcoming someone new to the group. I am of course paraphrasing, but he said something like it is a welcoming group with a lot of good running advice, but more importantly you will learn what condiments to put on your hot dog.6 -
I continue to struggle with slowing down. It may be getting worse. On the bright side, it tends to limit how many miles I actually run, so that helps with my goal...
No More Than 120 Miles
.........
July 17 - 5 miles
July 19 - 2 miles
July 20 - 3.5 miles
Total: 64.5 miles

Thanks @eleanorhawkins , @PastorVincent , and @garygse for the kudos.
@PastorVincent I agree with your comments about the weather. All weather is not safe to be in. Again, it is what you are used to and dressing appropriately. You can push it, but be safe. Cool picture!!!
@Avidkeo That house looks great. Praying for good news. I missed what happened to your toe, but I hope it heals quickly.
@Elise4270 Glad you are getting out to walk. Hope your daughter decides to join you more often. Why does she not feel comfortable wearing shorts for the walk?

@quilteryoyo I don't know your age, but you can use an age-graded calculator (there's one here http://www.mastersathletics.net/index.php?id=2595 and another https://www.runnersworld.com/advanced/a20801263/age-grade-calculator/) to give you an age-graded result for your 10k time this year and compare that to 2009. Your actual time might have been slower, but I bet your age-graded time is a significant improvement.
@eleanorhawkins I hear you. So many people, online and in person, try to downplay their times by saying "I only run XX minute miles/kms" and I can only wish I were that fast. But everyone is in a different place in their journey. I met a woman last night with whom I had a great rapport; she was so very encouraging and positive. We empathized with each other over trying to balance the desire to run with the need to include strength and mobility training... and not having enough time to do it all, as much as we would like. And then she mentioned her pace (which she doesn't know is quite a bit faster than mine) and belittled herself. I was trying to encourage her, without comparing myself and my times (at least not out loud). Comparison is the thief of joy and all that.
Anyway... I don't know my point, or if I even have one, other than what I started with. I hear you. It must be a relatively common thing for people.
So can I throw out a monthly question? I know it's kind of late but..
How do you encourage other runners, either online and/or in person?
Follow-up question... how do you encourage yourself?

Another morning of walking the dogs separately. I took each of them to the vet's office for a quick hello and weigh-in first thing this morning. Then the rest of the day was relatively sedentary. Now I need to finish at least one load of laundry so I have something to wear on my long run tomorrow.3 -
So, despite my slow start and a long lasting migraine slowing progress last week, I am sitting at about 25 miles for the month between walking and running. So, not completely horrible, but not where I need to be, for sure. I still need to work on increasing leg mileage and decreasing fork mileage.
In other news, my new shiny came in.... and tried my first run with it tonight.
Anyone have good suggestions for Garmin for dummies/luddites? (Aka wtf do I do now???)10 -
After a rest day, full night's sleep and lots of good food, I am still running in slow-motion and gasping for air in Denver. But the scenery was nice.
Today we made the trip up Pike's Peak, and had some great views UNTIL we reached the top, just as a thunderstorm was coming in. We were only there a few minutes when they informed us we needed to get back on the shuttles to be evacuated immediately (lightning and developing icy road conditions). So I told my husband I'd be back, went outside, turned on my watch and ran around for 200 meters just to get this: I don't know how people run a marathon up & down that mountain. I can't imagine even wanting to train for something like that!

@quilteryoyo - I love the medal and bib! So cool! Great job!!
@eleanorhawkins - I joined a women's running group and went to one breakfast hoping there would be someone at least close to my age and pace. Nope all significantly younger and talking about their BQ times. I have not gone to a single group run. There is no way I could keep up with them and I can run by myself without getting in my car and driving an hour across LA. I have since avoided pretty much any group run because I have convinced myself I am just too slow. When we were on vacation last week I was invited to join a couple of the local running club runs and I just couldn't do it.
@Elise4270 - I gave up trying to suggest clothing my dd. She went with me a few times and learned from experience what worked for her. I know it was working when she asked for some tops from Nike or UA and while there we got her a pair of capris. Now she wears leggings or shorts and tank tops. Awesome getting out and walking! Even if you are slow it is progress.
@polskagirl01 - that is a great idea! I don't do well at altitude either. It takes a long time to adjust but I guess you must since so many runners train at altitude.
Got my long run in this morning but got out late. We had a close friend pass away this last week and his daughter called to let us know and it kind of derailed my morning almost to the point of not running. So I went and I dedicated it to our friend. The weather wan't too bad, low 70's to start with only 50% humidity but Hobbes wouldn't even go with me. In retrospect it was good that he didn't because it was pretty warm as the morning progressed hitting 80F by the time I got home. I did try to stay in the shade when I could as the sun was beating down and really hot. 9.56 miles - I will update my totals in the morning.
I am having an issue with my left knee - the one with the (old) torn meniscus. Not sure exactly what I did to it but it is tender on both sides of my knee cap. Hoping tomorrow's rest day will make it happier.9 -
@Elise4270 Glad your daughter went out and walked with you yesterday. Have you thought about biking shorts? They are little bit longer and tend to cover the thighs more. I have a pair that I run in and really like them.
@zeesparrow Thanks! Those are neat. I am turning 60 in two weeks. I ran my first and only other 10K when I turned 50. Both comparisons showed that I "beat" my 50 year old self by 4 to 7 minutes. More importantly to me, my % compared to others has gone up by about 5% too. I feel like I am in better shape and had run more than I had in 2009, so was a little disappointed that the numbers didn't show it. This comparison helps me feel better about the run!!!
@hanlonsk Love the new Garmin. I have one too, but only do the basics, so I would be no help with a tutorial. It does give you some great information though.
@polskagirl01 I have been to Pikes Peak and agree with you. I have no idea how people run up there. I could barely breath just standing there. I love that you "ran" before you had to evacuate.
Thanks @shanaber . The medal and Bib were one reason I decided on this race. They are very cool. The other side of the medal has "the foot imprint." Hope your knee feels better after a rest day!

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
UGH!!! Started out at a moderate pace for me, but there were no more oxygen molecules in the air after about the halfway point. Cut back to easy pace and finished up. This is supposed to last day of our heat wave.

4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K - 31:34 chip time; 31/77 overall; second male 65 and older (no official category)
7-27 Solon Home Days 5K7 -
@quilteryoyo great job on the 10K, and nice bling!
That's pretty awesome that your 60 year old self beat your 50 year old self!! 💪
@hanlonsk your new Garmin looks exactly like my Forerunner 235. If so, you are going to love it. Yeah, just read the manual, it is really intuitive. And go to Garmin Connect IQ store to download all kinds of widgets, clock faces, and apps.
@shanaber sorry to hear that your knee is giving you trouble 😞
13.1 miles this morning. First half was a slog, but at 7 miles I felt stronger and the second half of the run felt much better.

Looks like I have about 42 miles to hit my goal. Given my training plan I am not sure that is going to happen. I really don't want to overdue it and aggravate anything.
I did take an Aleve last night before I went to bed and my knee feels so much better. I think a lot of the stiffness was from inflammation. We'll see how it feels in a couple of hours when the Aleve is completely worn off. I am going to try getting in the pool today and try my aqua running belt that I bought and couldn't use when I had the stress fracture. It should be fun and if the running doesn't work out I can just relax and float around 😁

Ran some trails today for the first time since ankle injury - Achilles’ tendon seems okay but won’t really know until tomorrow. Landing and jumping on my forefoot from different angles still puts a lot of stress on my tendon. 3.1 miles running, followed by 3.7 miles walking. The weather was hot and humid but not as bad as it has been. I almost stepped on a lizard which darted in front of me!8
