After taking the dogs on individual walks yesterday, I decided to follow through with my previous plan and take them individually for my run today. I might switch the order of dogs... faster dog (also more of a puller) might be better to have at the beginning when I'm fresh. They took plenty of opportunities to stop, sniff and pee... or poo... but it was a nice run.
Tonight - my 30th high school reunion!9 -
ran weds. it rained on my way to the trail and i hoped it would keep raining because it was so warm. i was not lucky. the first mile was brutal. felt like i had never run before. after that, it got better. the path was a little flooded still.6

I've been MIA on the thread. Particularly when I heard about Kevin on FB I knew I would just come on this thread and start crying (which I just did, at my desk) like I did when I first heard. I'm in for the tribute in November. I'm doing a Disney 1/2 on the 3rd so I'll add myself to the chart going around.
I've been massively struggling with finding new shoes and forefoot numbness. I'm getting extremely frustrated. I don't know if it's just that none of the shoes I'm trying are right (in the past I've had trouble finding shoes that don't cause numbness) or if there's something more going on, but I'm thinking I'm going to make a dr.'s appt. We shall see. If I get knocked out of marathon training for my 1st full marathon for the 3rd year in a row I might just think I'm cursed11 -

January will be my 4th attempt at a first marathon. At this moment I am doubting I'll be ready.5 -
@KatieJane83 - Have you tried alternative lacing patterns and or laces? I gave up trying to find shoes that didn't cause numbness and then someone here recommended the alternative lacing and the stretchy no tie laces (I use Nathan Run Laces from Amazon). I still lace them with more open area over my mid foot and they give when my feet swell so there isn't any pressure on my foot to cause the numbness. It still happens once in a while if I pull them too tight but all in all it has not been a problem for me for a while now.2

Yup, been doing that for years with my beloved Brooks Glycerins (which they changed, grrr, hence my search for new shoes). Been trying it with all the new shoes I've tried too.2 -
5 miles in actual daylight - swapping to a dawn running schedule since we will be dog sitting next week and the dogs like to be walked about 7 am. I don’t know if it was the humidity (under a heat advisory right now) or the schedule swap but this run felt hard! I’m not very satisfied with my conditioning at present. Due to my Achilles’ tendon injury I haven’t been doing long runs and it’s starting to show. The tendon is still not perfect so I don’t want to push too much, but I need to start adding mileage. We ran three miles at just under 10 minute pace, then had to take a couple of walk breaks the last two miles because of the heat, and those ended up at 11.
We did enjoy getting out to the park to run! I wish our parks were open after dark, especially in the summer when it’s so hot. The buffalo herd has two babies, and we saw an entire flock of goldfinches. I had never seen goldfinches before except in a book, and now I’ve seen them twice at the same spot in Shelby Farms. We also saw a barred owl feather caught in a bush.11 -

It was over 80 degrees by the time I got out at 8 am for this morning's warm-up run before strength training. So I definitely warmed up. The humidity was of course high, and right now we're at a "feels like" of 102 - oh and it just started pouring so I guess the humidity is about 100%. Surprisingly though, my pace was pretty decent this morning, especially for the last mile. I was thinking a little bit about lengthening my stride and pushing off behind me (instead of reaching out ahead) while I was running and I think that helps me when I remember to do it.
Strength training was a mix of things today, lots of Spartan-related training. We started out with 10 minutes on the stairmaster with a weighted vest, so round two of profuse sweating for the morning. Then we did various push-ups, pull-ups, mace training, sandbag hoists, etc. It all went better than I expected given I went to an open gym night at the Ninja Barracks last night and my grip was feeling pretty shot. That was fun, though! I successfully climbed the rope and climbed/jumped up this 10-foot wall thing (kind of like those soft box jumps that stack and velcro together if you know those). Makes me feel kind of like a little kid running around in there.
Tomorrow looks like the worst of the heat, so great timing for the long run. I just bought some popsicles to bring along in a cooler for some mid or post-run incentive. I should start a lot earlier but I am going to a party tonight and I don't see myself getting out of bed before 6 am. I'm sure I will be sorry.

Seriously if you are in this heatwave in the N/E USA, PAY ATTENTION to the HEAT INDEX, not the air temp. Here is a handy chart (in F cause we are talking about the USA)
High at my house, tomorrow is predicted to be 95F with 65% humidity, that is a HEAT INDEX 114. That is the number that matters.

I just learned a couple of days ago that MobyCarp passed away. I am so sorry to hear of this. He was such an asset to this group.
When I was getting ready for work a couple of nights ago, I was trying to catch up with posts (always behind) when I read a post about someone fighting a fever, and had felt so awful that he wasn't able to hear the fireworks going off. As I continued to read, I was thinking, "Wow, this person is really, really sick." Then I checked the post and it was @MobyCarp who posted it. I am used to him posting a lengthy race report or injury report but not an illness report. So surprised was I to see that post. 5 days is a long time to get over an illness, but was heartened to see that he was on the mend. Later at work, I had some down time, and for some reason, checked the forum, and found out from
@PastorVincent 's post that he had passed away. Inside, I was screaming, "Noooooo, It can't be." I started to tear up, and, of course, there is never any Kleenex at the nurse's station. So I walked to the supply room to get a box, and I didn't want my fellow workers to see me.
Wednesday night I was in a dark funk during my run. It was hot and humid. I waited as long as I could to run, but it was still 86 degrees when I got started, and so humid. I was in a dark funk....thinking about how life isn't fair. You know Kevin had just retired last year (I think) and was recovering from injury, and had so many plans to race this year.
So what I remember about him and will miss the most other than his very detailed training runs and post race reports is his sense of humor which was extremely dry, but he could be so funny that I would laugh out loud at it.
I was thinking about how he would trot down his hallway, testing his ankle or hamstring or whatever was that was injured while his eggs cooked and envisioned his house with a bowling alley length hallway and small kitchen.
He was always a bargain hunter when he bought shoes, and knew how many miles he put on them.
He was fascinated with the introverted/extroverted discussions.
He was enviously fast!
Well, again, @MobyCarp will be sorely missed.16 -
Was on the treadmill today. I have stuck to my plan to do shorter runs outside, but it's just too hot for me to do a long run outdoors.
Anyway, I had the easiest 7 miles I have ever run today. Surprise, surprise, I needed to slow down. Outside I largely run by feel and only spot check my pace a handful of times. On the treadmill I know exactly how fast I'm going and my competitive nature kicks in and before I know it, I'm knocking the speed up. Today, I set it to basically my warmup pace and did not allow myself to turn it up. Realistically, it's probably about the average pace I will be at over a HM distance. Amazing how much more pleasant my run was!
Also, my husband joined the gym! It surprised me, but he was just over the heat and was really dreading outdoor long runs. He seemed more comfortable on the treadmill today and even managed to look up for most of the run. Still held on the entire time, but he's getting there. He said it was much easier today because he was less tense and it's easier to breathe when you're not hunched over. 😆😆
We both plan to stick outside as much as we can tolerate, but a little A/C from time to time never hurt anyone!!

@katharmonic thank you for the reminder about pushing instead of pulling. I had forgotten all about it but I'm really bad for that and concentrating on pushing forward with my back foot rather than pulling myself forward with my front foot seems to make a big different to how I feel while running.
Which did great for the first couple of kilometres of this morning's short (cutback week) long run. I was sort of running on autopilot, still half asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night with a cramp in one calf, and broken sleep makes me zombie like. So instead of following my intended route, I ended up taking one I've never done on foot before. With a devil of a hill that even my clapped out old banger of a car doesn't like! What the heck? (That's what my legs said!) Was actually quite a nice little route, my brain reckons some up and down is good for me so I may well use it every now and then. Was also interested to see on Strava that it is a segment, and I was the third fastest woman on it this year and 11th of 19 women in total. My local idol (who is unfortunately in my age group so I'm forever doomed to be in awe of her) showed up in there. So now (uh-oh) I have a challenge... to match her time on that hill!
Made me laugh when I checked Strava to also notice that the 'devil hill run' ended up being 6.66km!
