Machka: Stay safe and dry during the storm. I hope there is no serious damage to your home. :flowerforyou:
DH had his consultation with the neurosurgeon today. The doctor said that he is not a good candidate for surgery and he needs to go on with physical therapy. I was impressed with the doctor and am quite satisfied with his conclusions and explanation. Now DH is urging me to go and see our grandchildren on my own. He wants to put me on a jet in Portland and pick me up there when I get back. I haven’t decided what to do yet. As you may remember, I wanted to visit them in our RV. That doesn't look very likely at the moment.

BarbieI helped son get new driver's license today. What a headache. The silver lining is when I go to get mine in a couple of months. I will know what paperwork I will need. I am glad I went with him because I think it helped from getting too frustrated. He is doing well considering what he went through. I could see getting this license being overwhelming for him. The amount of documentation you need to get a newer license is like applying for a passport. This was the second time we went to do this. The first time was finding out how much documentation you need. Son thought he had everything. Turns out you need two documents with your address on it. His old license didn't work because his address had changed. This is addition to social security card, Birth Certificate. Bill that only had a due date did not work. He also had to apply to get a notarized birth certificate. I was proud of him in being able to get so much together and handle the frustration of getting the license. The cost of getting one also went up $6 as of August 1. This is just the way things are these days. I have yet to see things get less complicated or less expensive.
We just went in to up date our trust and set up a trust for our son. Just like you it added to the to do list because accounts needed to be added to this and each account had its own set of paperwork plus there are at least three more things to do to finish up trust for son. You are also right to check about beneficiaries. You assume it is done but I did have an account that was not done. It was such a hassle to get it done I just decided to close the account.

Margaret, Is your son's license one of the new ones that will allow him to cross the border to Canada. We have that sort of license in Washington because the border is nearby. We also have the choice to have an ordinary license that doesn't require so much documentation. We have passports so we didn't need the enhanced license.
Katla, sorry to hear that your DH didn't get the news he wanted. I hope he'll make the most of physical therapy and that you'll take the opportunity to visit your grandchildren.

We are updating our will and the beneficiaries on my IRA. It seemed like it would be a simple process--change/add/subtract a few names and write a check to the attorney. No such luck. Even this simple thing has taken a lot of paperwork and phone calls and we haven't even had our appointment with the attorney to go over the changes. I have such admiration for all of you who handle complex transactions like this and work full time and care for a family. I guess I've gotten too relaxed and laid back.

We've done the will thing now. Two meetings with lawyer, multiple emails over several weeks - lots of back and forth on minute details, then exchange of bank data and online payment for it all.
We're moving on to taxes now. Australia isn't really strict about that ... not like Canada. But we do need to get things up to date, and in Australia, people go to a tax accountant to do that. Apparently just very recently things have changed and people are able to do their own if it is simple and straightforward, but if there are any complications ... tax accountant. There are also a lot of deductions we can't use in Canada but can use here ... however, they take some chasing up. That's one of the reasons to use a tax accountant so that person can say, "yes, you can use that" or "nope". So that's what we're doing with our spare time now. This will involve several meetings and copious quantities of emails ... as well as a whole lot of digging through files, receipts, etc. etc. etc.
I compartmentalise in a way. My day consists of work, university, medical stuff, exercise, the project (now it's taxes), cycling stuff, whatever I'm doing for fun (website, read, photography), and sleep.
During work hours, work is the priority, but if I've got a few extra minutes here and there, university is next and then the project.
During university hours, that's the priority, but it doesn't stop me from jotting a few notes about something else in a corner of a paper during a lecture.
During medical stuff, that's the priority. Period. I'm focused then.
During exercise, that's the priority, but I'll think about what I've got to do in each category.
And I'll block evenings. One evening will be homework. The next might be the project. The next might be a cycling stuff evening. The next might be something for me ... unless I really need to do something from a higher priority category like homework.
So ... from the time I get out the door at 8:30 am ... all the way to 12:30 am at night, everything is scheduled.
That's the only way I can hope to do it all.

Regarding the weather ... in that 120 km/h gust last evening, a roof blew off one home and several others lost parts of their roofs. They successfully fought the battle to keep the windows in one building. Several trees down. Power out in several parts of the state. Flooding here and there. Yachts torn from moorings and run aground.
The storm eased slightly and it's even sunny just at the moment, but it's supposed to come back again this afternoon with snow down to a low level, hail, rain, and lots of wind. They've already had up to 70 mm of rain in many places, with lots more to come. (Our monthly average for August is 53 mm)
So I'm not going to my tutorial either. I've already told my tutor and she's OK with that.
Plus I've got a lot to do at work this week.
Oh, and our place is all right so far ... just a bit of rain seeping in under the doors.

Amber – we know our bodies better than any doctor. Doctors take care of multiple patients, and every patient is different. We know ourselves better than them. Sometimes it makes me wonder why go to a doctor, why not tell them what’s wrong and how to treat it? But then there are times when we just don’t know all the medical facts (only there are times when doctors aren’t aware of the most up to date procedures)
Katla – I’m so sorry that the doctor doesn’t recommend surgery for your husband

Hi Gals,
Lisa – thinking of you, glad you were so careful about having copies of everything.
Rori – beautiful bathroom!
Heather – great picture!
ON MINT – ok I know that different climates mean that an invasive plant in one climate zone is a cute annual in another climate zone. But please please do your research before planting mint in the ground. In the year round mild climate of the SF bay area mint is a HUGE problem. At my mom’s house a mint plant that did not seem that big, planted right by the house broke the foundation and got into the sub flooring of the home, repairs were above $50,000; the idea of mint oil seems like a good choice.

Happy National Radio Day!
"Each year on August 20th, National Radio Day recognizes the great invention of the radio. Celebrate the news, information, music, and stories carried across the airwaves. Several inventors had a part in the invention of the radio in the late 1800s. Amazingly, not just one person can be credited with its beginning. Each component developed through invention and discovery. As these technologies converged, the radio came to life."
Amber - Congratulations on the shrinking measurements! Way to go!
Barbie - Philip and I just bought prepaid cremation arrangements with the Neptune Society but we still need to update our wills since Dad died. We weren't leaving him anything but he is mentioned as an alternate executor so that needs to be tidied up. I'm dreading it but it's got to be done and we need to find an attorney because our current will was done with Quicken Family Law and I think we're ready for a real lawyer this time. But first we have to have a discussion about what goes where and whether we want to change any of that from the previous version, and I need to chat with my siblings about how they want to handle our partial ownership of the river house. Too many questions, not enough answers!
Philip did his first real meal planning today after dropping the ball last week. He picked out recipes for the week, made the grocery list, and did the shopping. He did a good job but that's because I took time off from work to sit down and do it with him! That's OK, it's a start. Once he's done it a time or two he should be good to go on his own and it'll be a huge help to me to have everything ready when it's time to cook.
I bought a small Instant Pot during Amazon's Prime Day sale and so far I've only been using it to make yogurt, but today I printed out a whole bunch of Instant Pot recipes and added them to the pool of meals to choose from. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other functions. We have a good quality pressure cooker, but it's large and I don't use it often so I may end up getting rid of it if I like the Instant Pot.
Whether it was on the radio, on your phone, or at a concert, I hope everyone enjoyed some music today!

Unfortunately, it tends to be a bit higher in calories than something like brown rice but despite the high calorie count, I find it less filling. I like it ... but it isn't worth my calories.

Barbie I learned today you can use the enhanced license with a car to go into Canada and Mexico, but not for flying. He got what is called a Real license that you can use for flights in US. You still need all the documents for that one. An enhanced license is another $14. He didn't think the Enhanced was worth it. Things have changed in the three years since I got mine. I will have to go through this process in a couple of months. Our DMV is having all kinds of problems here when they switched the computer system a couple of years ago. Learning we are living in a time where patience is key.
Mint is a perennial here and dies back in the winter. Still it does spread like a weed, so i do pull out what I don't want. I can see where it would be problem in a warmer climate.2 -
Although I don't log as much as I should, I've got a pretty good idea how many calories I'm consuming ... at least up till dinner time. Dinner time does kind of depend on what my husband decides to make.
11:45 am snack - crackers & cheese - 100 cals
2:00 pm lunch - rice, chicken, veg - 337 cals
3:30 pm snack - yogurt (175 grams) - 73 cals
4:30 pm snack - either apple (or other fruit) or crackers & cheese - 100 cals
Sub-total: 610 cals
7:00 pm dinner - lots of veg + something else - usually about 400 cals, but occasionally more. Once in a while even as much as 700 cal!
Sub-total: 1010 cals
And then a couple evening snacks around 8:30 pm and 11 pm. These might depend on how much exercise I've done and how many calories I've got to work with.
Also occasionally, if I'm feeling really hungry during the day, there might be an extra crackers & cheese or something.
This works for me ... most of the time.

Good morning beautiful ladies 💐💐!The elementary school that’s just 2 minutes from my house has Really gone downhill since my children went there,so that’s not an option. There is a school that will be on her way to her New job(if he doesn’t make her lose it),but she’d have to get a waiver and she’s not sure she’d get one.I think she’s afraid of making him angry and that’s why she’s reluctant to change schools.I worry if I step in that it could make things worse for them.Around here you really can’t speak to anyone “off the record “.
The heat and humidity have been terrible-my heat rash is back with a vengeance.Witch hazel is the only thing I’ve found to dry it without drying too much.
Mint-I grow chocolate mint and just mint.I use both in my nutriblast I the morning. I use cinnamon oil and water for snakes and ants and we’ve had an abundance of both this year.Prayers, hugs, live❤️,and so much gratitude for y’all.

Try those gel ice packs. I found they helped me when I've had heat rash. No lotions or anything, just clean skin and ice packs.
Also most sunscreen is really horrible ... I'd put it on, go cycling, and break out in the most terrible heat rashes. Until I discovered Neutrogena Dry-Touch Sunscreen. It was OK.

BIAT (Brain Injury Association of Tasmania) asked me if I would be a part of this project ... a video resource. I thought about it for a little bit and then I agreed. My husband is part of it as well.

Good morning all! Happy Wednesday!
Debby in VA- the situation with your daughter is just breaking my heart! The ladies are correct in that changing schools/districts is relatively easy; but even if it is a bit of a pain in the butt, isn't it worth it to get your child away from an abusive person? Sending your daughter thoughts and vibes of strength, as she tries to make this break, finds her own self worth/superpowers, protects her child. I hope you get some relief from the heat rash! And lucky you! You have the chocolate mint plant! I just heard about that this spring. I hope to get some next spring. It smells fantastic!
Machka- So happy you weathered the storm and came out with only a bit of water on the floor! Love the article. I think it is fascinating how the medical/health opinion on different foods changes over time. Every time I see a new article, my mom's voice comes into my head, "everything in moderation." I think that was her motto for everything in life.
Kate UK- Happy to hear your DEXA scan came back with good results! Something easy to manage!
Yvonne- Pretty much all I use my pressure cooker for is yogurt. I do throw potatoes, carrots, and other long cooking veg in there from time to time. I love how the potatoes come out buttery soft in a matter of 5-7 minutes!
Kim- some folks on the wildlife forum I belong to were just talking about weeds/invasive plants. Many people were surprised that mint is considered invasive. It spreads like nobody's business.
Tracey- I really enjoyed the wedding video, such a beautiful couple! I bet it feels good to get back into a normal routine.
Rori- Love the bathroom re-do! I am hoping to update both of mine in a year or two. I still have lovely goldenrod colored fixtures in the main bath! lol
Heather-Glad you enjoyed the time with your friend! The pics of the two of you were wonderful! All windblown and looking like you were having a great time together. Cute pic of the kids on the unicorn float! Is this the house that they stayed in last year?
Well, I got the egg carton space ship put together and set up mission control for the kids! They have really been enjoying the week. We have been watching some videos of launches and space flight. They really enjoy the videos of the astronauts living on the space station. Suni Williams has a great "tour" of the ISS on youtube. Then there are a series of space experiments that the kids all love to watch. Fun week so far. Posting pics. Forgive me, I can't remember how to do a spoiler, so they are going full view.
Thinking of you all! Sending thoughts of strength, peace and healing for those who need it! Pancake day for the kiddos, so I better fly! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Kelly-that is AWESOME !!!!!! My gs would Love that!!Although he gets to go to the farm with me every day and play in the huge watermelon bins,he would have a blast in that spaceship.
The heat rash is on my breasts, between them and under,on my upper rib cage. Hopefully today,my day off,I’ll get a break.
Honestly,I Appreciate everything y’all are saying and and the prayers coming our way.
Machka-I love the heat and will take it any day.Your weather is terrible and I’m so sorry. I despise the cold when I’m working in it,can never get warm no matter how many layers I wear.
