Tonight's speedwork for marathon/HM group was left up to the gods to decide our fate. We had 6 intervals with the number of minutes per interval determined by a roll of the dice. The gods started out kind of harsh with 5, 4, 5. Then a merciful 1, but followed by the dreaded 6. And the last roll was down the middle at 3. So, 5-4-5-1-6-3 with 2 minutes recovery after the first two, then 90 seconds recovery for the remaining. Followed up by 4 sprints. The capriciousness of the running gods was not my favorite, but it beat the 45-minute tempo run from last week.9 -
Got 10k on trails. 100 degrees again plus ozone alert. My husband rolled an ankle and quit after 4 miles. It remains to be seen how long term the injury is - right now it’s sore but not swollen. He also wasn’t having the greatest time breathing with the ozone alert, just not his day.
It’s supposed to be about ten degrees cooler next week. Looking forward to it! It hasn’t rained in so long that the wetlands area under the boardwalk which is usually a little river is just a few patches of mud. And the trails were all dust. I did see a big hawk, though! It was sitting in a tree at eye level next to the trail and flew away at the last minute. Red tail I think.13 -

@AlphaHowls hugs, hope the knee gets better. I'm impressed you are still going!
I was oncall last night, only 1 fortunately, so went for a 5k run this morning. Still not running the whole distance but close. Week 1 of my 8 week challenge is done tomorrow.
Next 2 weeks I'm on shift, so start at 3pm every day so that will be good for exercises! And eating has been well on track. Now to keep it up for 7 more weeks haha6 -
Busy busy week, am keeping up with posts and liking but not managing to comment. Hugs and get well soon for everyone injured, wtg for everyone doing awesome stuff!
I finally got round to going and buying a pass to use the pool up the road in 'public bathing' hours with an aim to switching my cross-training from walking on the treadmill (zzzzz) to swimming. The woman in the office acted like I was completely crazy... our local council recently made sports activities (read: lessons) free in a move to encourage people to get healthier, so when I told her I wanted to use the pool she started trying to tell me about adult swimming lessons and aquagym. Nope, don't want anyone telling me to do this that or the other, I just wanna get in the pool and do my little old lady breast-stroke potter up and down for an hour and yeahI don't mind paying for it.
Anyway, I wanted to go tomorrow but clients ruined that plan, so recovery swim tomorrow it is!
Somehow (mummy-taxi requirements for Saturday, storms threatened tomorrow and Saturday and a desire for a lie-in on Sunday) made me plan to do this week's scheduled 10 mile run this morning. I have only done one 10 mile run before and one HM, so it's only the 3rd time I've ever run that far, making it 'quite a big deal' for me. Plans were almost ruined by a runny tummy yesterday afternoon (sorry, TMI?) but I didn't feel bad or sick or anything and slept through the night so I got up early and headed out on a route I knew had plenty of public bathrooms and a promise to myself that I could abort mission if I needed to. Stomach was actually fine in the end.
Anyway, the run happened, some mental fortitude combined with just switching off and continuing to put one foot in front of the other in time to my music (thank GOD for music) was required. I worked something out about me and running though! I've seen lots of runners mention 'the wall' or 'bonking' and always assumed it was just some sort of physical exhaustion thing, but the penny dropped today that after around 10-12 kilometres my brain (not my body) hits some kind of wall or bonks or whatever. Just after km 11 this morning there was a tramp on the seafront waving his arms about and shouting at the sun. I SWEAR it was Mick Jagger. Then I ran past the car park in the port, saw the machine to pay and got in a panic because I couldn't find any coins in my pockets to pay for my parking, or my parking ticket, OR my car key. Umm yeah, probably because my car was parked outside my house about 4 miles away? WTF was that all about? Then I remembered after my 10k race in June I did a 30 minute drive home in the dark I remember nothing about and couldn't find the garage remote or my keys (which I had carefully put in the glove compartment so I wouldn't lose them). And the final run on the 15k training schedule I did before the summer when I thought I had lost my energy bar and it turned out it was in the one pocket I didn't grope about in. And last week, when towards the end of my 9 mile run I was sending my daughter delirious voice messages by Whatsapp telling her I might get run over by a train in the middle of the countryside. Today I may have been a little dehydrated due to yesterday's stomach issues, so that may have something to do with it, but usually I make sure I drink LOTS the day before long runs, and I generally take a gel every 45-50 minutes as I run almost fasted, so don't think it's hydration or fueling. Just I go braindead when I start getting tired, I guess. Note to self: use the 'for dummies' school of thought when preparing for long runs from now on!
Still 6 weeks away from my HM, the fact that I still get to fit in another 10 mile run as well as an 11 and a 12 is making me feel a lot more confident about being able to go the distance, and I'm trying not to fret about speed too much cause I always do that and I'm always fine on the day. Hopefully swimming and massage along with run-walk-run will keep the legs happy and avoid a repeat of the injury issues I had last time round.
Now, food and nap. Work can wait today.

I ran really easy miles yesterday. Like stupidly slow easy miles. But I've not been feeling well and I'm supposed to be running easy. Still, I did find that the last time I ran this slowly my HR was about 10 bpm higher than it was yesterday. That's something!
I've got loads of excuses these days; coming home after two weeks off meant lots of stuff to catch up on both at home and work - and it feels like there's been little progress. Couple that with my boss being out of the country for three weeks (working) which meant I was called on for half a dozen interviews, a software implementation that was solely on my shoulders... along with a possible stress reaction AND some sort of viral ear infection for the past few days! Yep, I think it's fair that I have felt overwhelmed and needed extra sleep recently.
My boss is back in town as of last night and will be back in the office Monday, software validation is complete and will be live today (I hope!!) and I'm not feeling dizzy this morning! I did sleep in again but it is also quite rainy and today's a scheduled rest day anyway.
I am also finally caught up on this thread, clicking my responses as I do. Thanks to those who respond to my posts, clicking or typing something more personal. I appreciate you all so much!!12 -
@eleanorhawkins - while running your brain loses water and functions at less than its normal level. This is pretty well known which is why you need to know your plan for any race BEFORE you start running. Drinking more does not really seem to help much, as your body is directing resources to the systems needed for running, and complex planning is not one of those systems.7

6 miles for me late last night. I think I started at 10 pm. The first 2 were slow miles with Kody. It was 70F and humid and he was falling behind the last half mile with tongue half way to the ground so I did some run/walk intervals with him. I look forward to cold weather when he has more stamina and doesn't overheat so easily.
I went out for 4 more after dropping him off. At mile 5 I decided to push the pace and ran under 8 minute/mile for the mile. Overall I was surprised how low my HR was given the heat.10 -
@AlphaHowls sorry to hear about your knee - hope you recover soon!

Just a short treadmill warm-up before strength training this morning. I'm off to the Adirondacks after work for some relaxation, as well as some hiking and running. I'm going to do my first high peak hike so I'm excited. I'm planning on a cutback week for the long run so I'm not sure what I'll end up with there. Depends on how much hiking happens. My main plan is brunch with bloody mary(s) at least twice if I can manage it.11 -
Race Report – Boise Jack and Jill Downhill HM. It is long and there are a bunch of pictures. I haven't been able to access the actual race pictures but they are free which is cool assuming we can get to them eventually.
TLDR - short version... we went to Boise stayed up late for a football game on Saturday, raced my 25th HM on Sunday morning. Temps were good but it was very dry, only ~12% humidity. Finished 9th in my AG.Initially we were headed to Boise to spend a fun weekend with friends and a Boise State football game. When I got the email about the race we were already booked with the game on Saturday night with a start time of 5:30pm. It seemed like it would be perfect – running my 25th HM almost exactly 7 years after my 1st and getting to do it in my hometown!Pictures
That was months ago and between then and now the game start was moved, to accommodate ESPN coverage, to an 8:30pm start. That meant the game wouldn’t likely end until after midnight and then with the walk back to the hotel it would be around 1 when I would get to bed. I needed to be up by 4am to get ready and walk over to catch the bus to the race start at 5am!
On Saturday we drove around Boise and where I had lived, played and grown up and headed to the packet pickup at a local running store. The folks there were great and they had all of their running gear buy one get one or 50% off one item! Wow! I could have gone crazy but only bought a Boise Run Club long sleeve shirt and a hat. We also met a great group of runners there from Bend, OR, Seattle and SF who came over to visit with Hobbes the Vizsla (and my husband and friends) while I was in the store. They were all there for the marathon and the elusive last chance BQ.
We had a great dinner (pre-race burger and fries for me) and then walked over to the stadium for the game. By the half Boise had a pretty commanding lead and we decided to watch the start of the 3rd quarter then head back to the hotel. BSU scored another TD right at the beginning of that quarter so we left. We got back to the hotel and I made sure everything was ready to go and got into bed around midnight with the alarm set for 4, ugh. I was not at all ready to get up and didn’t feel like I had slept much at all. I made oatmeal to take with me and headed off. As I was walking out of the hotel I saw a bunch of other runners getting in the hotel shuttle and realized they were taking everyone over to the bus pickup so I ran over and got on the shuttle too. While waiting to board the bus to the start I was standing near a bunch of ladies who were also running the HM and ends up they were all from So CA too. I sat with them on the bus and the lady next to me had met my husband in the parking lot when he was out with Hobbes. Their group likes to run downhill races and were running one a month with a goal of getting to 60. They run all over, even in Europe. They are mostly back of the pack runners and do it for the fun and camaraderie.
Up on the hill I was expecting it to be super cold but the high for the day, originally expected to be in the mid to low 70’s was now expected to be over 90. At the start it was around 60 with a warm wind blowing. It was also incredibly dry. I know Boise is dry and don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to bring my own hydration pack, more on this later. The HM was small – maybe 200 or so runners at the most. We started in the dark with no real announcement, just the people in front started running. It was really weird running in the dark, my eyes would adjust and the moon was really bright and then someone would come up with a headlamp on and the light bouncing all over - it was very disconcerting. As the sun came up though it was beautiful. Right from the start though I was incredibly dry and thirsty and this never left me the entire race. There were water/Gatorade stations and porta pots every 2 miles but the moisture just seemed to evaporate from mouth and throat almost instantly. I also had gum which normally helps but did nothing this time.
The race starts out downhill with about a 6-7% grade and then there is one pretty good uphill after the first 1.5-2 miles that is split with am 18% grade for 0.3m and then level and up again for about 0.5m at 4% and after that it is all downhill until it flattens out around mile 7 or so. I got into a really good rhythm going down the hills and walked the steep up hill. I was keeping a good pace around 11-11:30 until I got to the flat and it went to a 12 min pace. I also knew the flat section was going to be tough for me so I dropped into my 3 min run/30 sec walk intervals. At mile 8 I was having stomach issues and knew I needed to stop. I think I was the 1st person to use that particular porta pot – it was pristine. Strange the things you notice! Note that after I walked the hill at mile 2, I was pretty much alone. I could see a runner or two ahead of me and no one behind me. That was also a bit strange as I am used to being in races with people all around even if strung out along the course. They had lots of people on the course for managing traffic at cross streets and directing us to the right route as well as lots of signs. After you run through the streets of Boise the course takes you along the Boise River greenbelt and into the park where I have run whenever we are there and had run just the last few days before the race. I continued to have water at every station and my SkratchLabs chews but I was just SO thirsty, my lips felt like they were cracking and I couldn’t get any spit to swallow so my throat was dry and made me cough! About this point, around mile 10 I started to have cramps in my feet; in the arch of my foot and in my toes and I kept trying to stretch my toes and step differently to make the cramps go away. When I was running in the park I lost sight of all the runners and this was the one area there were not many signs. I kept thinking maybe I had missed a sign and should have turned back over the river to the finish, but nope I had not. Once I found the turn I came upon a bunch more runners, many were walking due to cramps in their legs. I am sure it was from it being so dry. I was still doing my run walk intervals and there were a few times I really slowed down and walked longer because the cramps had moved from my feet to also include my calves. I finished under 3 hours with a time consistent with my most recent HMs. I was hoping to be closer to 2:30 but my official time was 2:53. I was 9th in my AG out of 15 and one of those ahead of me I am pretty sure was a guy (James) with a woman’s bib.
Note – my husband met me at the finish with Hobbes and so many people came up to ask me about Hobbes. Apparently, he had become quite the celebrity both with runners at the hotel and runners finishing the race.I am guessing the lowlight early in the race caused the blurriness...
At the top of the hill looking back
Starting the real all downhill part with the lights of Boise off in the distance
Sunrise!
The moon was so bright!
One of the many lovely parks in Boise that we passed.
The giraffes popped up as I was running along the greenbelt behind the zoo.
Hobbes and me at the finish on the greenbelt. There was beer at the finish (local brewery right there) but they couldn't start serving it until after 10am and we didn't stay for it.
Swag! Hobbes wouldn't leave it alone so I just had him join the picture. I am pretty sure he thought the trip and the race was all about him. He has his paw on a matching Buff that I thought was a cool addition to the shirt.19 -

PS. Mu husband did the 5 miler at the HM I just did - He hasn't run in years, but decided to do because of the cause and walked/ran it and came in 3rd for his age group. We won't mention that there were only 4 in his age group and the first was an elite so - he didn't count. Sshh.
I'm just thrilled he did it and finished. Made him feel pretty good too.
Hey, he can't control how many people in his age group show up to race.
Very true. Haha, He showed up and that counts!
In endurance sports, there are TWO things that separate the top of the back from the rest.
1) Showing up.
2) Finishing.
He nailed both and got the reward.
I like this. Yes he did, and I think he now has "the Bug"2 -
@shanaber Awesome race report and you did great - 25 HM wow.
And you-only had 4 hours sleep. That is incredible!1 -

I ran 6.25 miles this morning. It was a good run. It was hot and humid and just really felt uncomfortable when I started out. My feet are tired and achy in the way they get when I need new shoes. (I ordered some and they should be here tomorrow.) I really wasn't expecting much from the run when I started out, but as I ran it did get better and ended up being a nice run. I've noticed lately that I really start getting into the run after about 2.5-3 miles. I played Zombies Run and enjoyed that. I did turn off the chases since I ran with chases on yesterday and since my feet were achy I wanted to make this an easy run. I saw the cross country team at the park again. Then when I was just about home I almost got hit by a distracted mom dropping her kids off at daycare. I didn't really almost get hit since I was aware of my surroundings and I saw her barreling around the corner into the parking lot. But I was really close to her car when she pulled into the parking lot and I threw up my hands and gave her the look that said she almost hit me. And she could have hit me if I had not been paying attention and seen her. She thought she almost hit me and she looked pretty scared. After I passed her I heard her holler out an apology when she got out of her car. Maybe it scared her and she'll pay more attention now. I hope she does. I could have been a mom with kids going into the day care center instead of a runner. And it still would have probably traumatized her kids if she hit someone with her car.
Tomorrow and Saturday will be rest days. Hopefully my new shoes will be here in time for my run on Sunday. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. @AlphaHowls I hope your knee is feeling better!

So so far in Sept I have 60 miles. I had called for 80, don't know if that will happen, but will try!
Today I did 10K and it actually ended up being a PR for me. 1:02:09 10:02 min/mi average pace. Miles 3-6 averaged 9:37!. Super happy about that, especially after the HM.
This is a bid deal for me as I never imagined I could even do 10 min miles, let alone under that given my heart issues.
The temps were perfect - started in 57F with low humidity, so I am sure that helped a great deal.
This group really inspires.9 -
@kgirlhart I feel the same way - usually takes about a couple miles before I start getting into it as well.
Scary about the car almost getting you. Glad you noticed!1 -

I have several blog posts I want to write about running and one of them is the myth of running farther. I really need to hit the lottery or something so I can buy all the time for all the things I want to write. Might help if I played it though I really doubt that

So it turns out i probably don't have scabies and probably just developed a reaction to amoxicillin. Either way. No running for now because it make me itch which makes me want to peel my skin off

@rheddmobile Hope your DH's injury isn't too bad! We haven't had any rain here either, so have similar things happening. A lot of the leaves on the trees are just turning brown and falling off due to no rain. I hope it's just the leaves and the trees aren't dying. I don't think we will have a very pretty fall around my house.
@eleanorhawkins Great run, but I am a little concerned out your "brain deadness." Not sure that is normal. Maybe those on here who run a whole lot more than I will have a better understanding of that than I do. If it were me, I'd probably ask a doctor, but that's me and I'm a little bit paranoid sometimes.
@katharmonic Your trip sounds awesome. Enjoy your hike!
Great run @hamsterwheel6 !
