Sharing Five Types of Hunger ... an excerpt from Dr. Bert Herring's Book ... AC:The Power of Appetite CorrectionFive Types of Hunger
Somatic Hunger
Somatic hunger is the hunger that you feel in your belly; it may feel like sort of a cramping or twisting sensation, and it's often associated with stomach gurgles. [Deep rooted need for food when you are truly famished... my addition to the text.]
Limbic Hunger
Limbic hunger is the instinctive hunger that drives you to eat more than you intend to eat, as soon as you take the first bite. Limbic hunger is the reason that the serving size on certain thin, minty cookies should be one sleeve, not the four-cookie serving claimed on the package. Limbic hunger is the reason any size bag of chips might become one serving and the potato chip tag line, "nobody can eat just one" generally holds true. In the survival setting faced by humans for most of the past 100,000 years, limbic hunger made sure that as soon as there was a successful hunt or foraging trip, humans ate more than they needed so that there would be plenty of reserve even if the next meal did not come for several days. Food that wasn't eaten would either rot or be eaten by insects and other animals, so limbic hunger made sure the surplus food/fuel was safely stored in the fat-fridge by prompting more eating than was essential for survival.
Clock Hunger
Clock hunger is your body's biologic clock ticking, saying "Hey, you ate this time yesterday! Where's today's chow?" Clock hunger is felt as somatic hunger (the feeling in your belly that comes with stomach growls) about 23-24 hours after the time you ate the day before. If you eat a morning breakfast, that punches your body clock at that time. The next day at the same time, you'll likely feel hungry, because clock hunger triggers somatic hunger. On the other hand, if you usually eat a morning breakfast, and then don't eat it for several days, your morning breakfast clock hunger will fade, and within a few days, you won't be hungry at that time.
Appetite-Driven Eating (ADE)
Appetite-driven eating is an odd kind of hunger. You don't feel it as you do somatic hunger, but you can see it and experience it. When you see yourself eating when you'd rather not, that's ADE. You may not even feel any somatic hunger at the time, yet there you are, stuffing food into your mouth when you know you don't need it. Your mind is saying stop, but your body doesn't comply. You'd rather stop eating whatever it is you're eating, but you don't.
Mouth Hunger
Mouth hunger is related to ADE. It's the urge to chew on or eat something when you're not really hungry. Mouth hunger may be prompted by eating carbohydrate-rich foods and is distinguished by wanting or craving a particular sensation in the mouth. You don't want to eat just anything; you want something of a particular taste, texture or mouthfeel, such as sweet, crunchy, salty or chewy.

Reinventing Rhonda - Day 22
I came under fat and sugar limits for yesterday, but also fiber. I had been trying to keep protein up as it helps curb appetite but have beginning to (sorely) feel that I need to increase fiber rather substantially. With that in mind, I picked up chia and flax seeds from the store last evening and will be incorporating them into my diet.
Anybody else have difficulty keeping fiber count up? How do you handle it?
Mindless eating When stressed or bored, my tendency is to eat comfort foods and eat larger portions than my body needs. Heather and SuziQ Your discipline in planning meals and eating at certain times of the day is inspiring. I'm famished when I first wake up and know my body works best if I feed it a healthy breakfast. My not so tiny sub-aims for this week are (1) to eat breakfast every morning at roughly the same time and (2) have lunch items arranged in the fridge after breakfast is done and (3) to plan dinners.
Cheri My mother was named after my maternal great-grand-mother of the same name who was French. But I got a real kick out of how you were named!!!!! Most of my very large extended family on my mother's side had worked/work in the marine industry in San Pedro harbor. Our family spent a lot of time there, sailing and water-skiing in addition to working there, and I remember that tugboat being docked by the shore. I may even have a home video clip with it in. I'm the keeper of both sides of my family's genealogical info and artifacts. After I'm done with my garage clean up project, my plan is to review the multitude of home movies and videos during the wet winter months. If I come across something with Cheryl Ann, I'll figure a way to get a clip of it to you
Heather in UK I lived in Europe for a few years, but never got to Scandinavia. I wish I had, as it's so beautiful and rich in history. Not a lot of cruises provide much shore time. It's great that you'll be able to get off the ship and do some exploring. You're going to have a fab time - can't wait to hear of your adventures and see some photosRho – like your story about BF organizing and cleaning. I would view it that your plan was not meant to be that day, but you supported his efforts, so it was a win! I would credit him for trying.
I'm very organized when it comes to keeping things tidy and I plan cleaning jobs regularly. But you know, sometimes one misses something . . . Soon after my BF and began living together he would comment that I had missed this-or-that and how he had taken care of whatever it was. I felt criticized and insulted, initially, but came to learn that he's OCD about some cleaning tasks and that cleaning for him is a form of stress relief. My BF is completely different than my former two ex's. We feel very fortunate that we've found each other. We lavish each other with gratitude for the good points (and not make a big deal out of the not so ideal points we each have).
Congrats on getting your weight down, Ginny. If you could name the most primary thing that has helped you succeed, what would that be?
Hope everyone is making today a magical Monday!

This evening my son rang me at 4 PM to see if I could babysit that evening so he could go to a meeting. I love to help, but I had a nice dinner planned, needed to do some bonus exercise and I was hungry and tired from my social weekend.
I said NO.
Felt a little guilty, but it was too short notice for me and we wouldn't be able to eat until later, which you all know by now is not an option for me. Now I'm glad I didn't babysit. I need the down time.
Somewhat proud of myself for refusing. He didn't seem too bothered - it was just an option for him.

Heather ~ Good for you in turning down the request to child sit! My son and his wife have depended on me and her mom for 90% of any tasks they can't be available to do. In fact, I don't think they have ever hired a baby sitter. Now that the two grands are getting older, they go to many sleep overs with friends so I am sure that give the parents some relief.
Beautiful weather in Atlanta over the last four days...loving it!

Update on the Crud (illness) - Baby JR sounds way better caught it early still running the humidifier at naps for a few minutes. No more meds needed for us both but still near night or early morning mucus fight thinking this is allergies that’s left but treating it like a cold just in case.
Eating a Sam’s Club prepared meal hubby bought didn’t say calories on the tin but when I scanned it there was all the deli info already on this site just scan the bar codes! Hubby will eat half me too (lunch y dinner ) giving JR a serving he needs to get over pickiness start eating what we eat theirs noodles 🍝 today y on the side marinara chicken (noodles I know he can eat has once or twice before just stubbornness) . So told him NO cookies 🍪 eat your yummies their healthy first. So he takes his fork 🍴 puts a noodle on makes yummy noises as he tosses it by his leg 🦵. Yeah good try kid but no cigar! Sticking with it 2 1/2+ need to eat what everyone else does that’s life. Sure if hubby finds out he’ll buy pizza 🍕 so not saying a word he can munch off Daddy plate later if he’s still stubborn. He did eat breakfast 🥞 so it’s just lunch y dinner 🥘 that’s a fight we all know kid breakfast aren’t that healthy now of days! Got him to eat some cashew milk unsweetened on some cereal 🥣 yesterday a new think he’s used to almond milk unsweetened (25 y 30cal each). Cereal 🥣 fiber special K not starting those sugar cereals. He loves water me too luckily at least theirs a ton of ways to flavor water 💦...lemon,sweetener,fruits, crystal light powders,Gatorade powder, etc etc. Trying to get JR to try new things so he can eat at restaurants to family events or with us with less trouble cause Thanksgiving he has to eat what’s offered! Turkey or ham. Spicy 🌶 jalapeño stuffing to wheat rolls y more. Regular stuffing to pies 🥧. He’ll learn to eat some at least to appease adults lol 😂 like we all did...of course if you told me I could like off cinnamon rolls to donuts with some tacos 🌮 from fast food joints I’d never eat healthy again lol 😆. Yesterday was Sushi 🍣 (me only JR had pancakes 🥞 homemade) with Apple 🍎 slices, spinach leaves,y strawberries 🍓 so yummy healthy with water y crystal light 5cal tea water downed to fill the glass up of course.

Rori--Good news about DB and the job. Pray things work out with DH and the hearing aids. I want my DH to go get his checked, but insurance will not pay and he is being a pain about it.
Machka--Glad you got it all worked out and didn't yell. You are handling so much with grace. Sending hugs and prayers.
Heather--very nice picture and the red dress looks nice. Heather I love the look on your face with the cake. Looks like a great time for everyone. Good picture of you and your sons. You all have the same smile.
Well the weekend flew by. I worked half day on Saturday and Sunday we went motorcycle riding with DS and DDIL on their bike, DH rode his and DGD rode with me. It was a nice relaxing day. But I was told I pulled in front of a semi to close and when I think about it, I think I did so will have to work on that.

Did one segment of a 10MS Butt Lift DVD. Since I need to leave early tomorrow, the plan is to do Michele Dozois Peak Fit DVD.
After exercise, I stopped at the Salvation Army (where I didn’t buy anything, but you never know what they’ll have), bought bread for Vince, then ran into Aldi. Boy, did I have to go to the bathroom! We need to leave for bowling early since Vince needs to go to the post office before bowling and we need to be there early today. Tonight ceramics and then mahjongg.
Tomorrow I go for my mammo, dexa, then volunteer at the Green Room, then some ladies from Newcomers are meeting to see Downton Abbey. I’ll be glad when the day is thru…lol
SuzyQ – one thing I’ve found when we’re in FL, it seems that the handrail going into the pool never gets hot, even with the strong sun down there. It’s not like it’s coated in anything special. Is that the way it is for all the pools in FL? If so, is it a special kind of handrail?
Anne DE – praying for your uncle
barbie – Vince keeps the light on in the laundry room for the cats where their food is, even tho they can see better in the dark than we can….lol
Rita – do you know if the Area 51 festival is going to be an annual thing?
Betsy – welcome back

Terri, fantastic pictures. You look so elegant!
Tried my hand at strawberry chia pudding. Pretty good stuff.
Great workout today, 3 sets of 12 each of chest press three ways, flies, and overhead tricep. I used 15 lb dumbbells for most, 8 lbs for the flies, and 10 lbs for the backwards chest press. Also did 15 minutes of abs.just trying this to see if I could do it.

Betsy in NW WA: Welcome back from Alaska. I hope you had a grand adventure.
Beth near Buffalo: Thank you for sharing the 5 types of hunger. My DH often asks what I’m hungry for. I usually say protein. My food choices are more diverse than that, but protein is usually at the top of my wish list. :flowerforyou:
Terri: You look wonderful, sleek and sophisticated. Nice!
Allie: I had my gallbladder removed several years ago due to a diagnosis of gall stones. They were very painful and the pain happened most often at night. The surgery was a welcome relief, but it turned out that I had only one gallstone and it was large—at least the size of a robin’s egg. I’ve been told that most gallstones are small and there can be many. If this is a gallbladder problem, you likely need medical intervention. At least get a check-up. Rest well.

Happy Autumnal Equinox!
"The autumn equinox is one of two days when all points on Earth except the polar regions see the sunrise and set at due east and due west. With few exceptions, all latitudes see almost precisely 12 hours of daylight and 12 of darkness. ... People’s minds begin to think about warmer clothes and preparing their homes for winter. In the fields, farmers eagerly watch for the opportune time to harvest. Apples, pumpkins, and root vegetables ripen in the orchards and gardens. On cool evenings, long walks along the trails under the canopies of gold, umber, violet and crimson keep us warm."
Heather - Thank you for the book recommendation! I'm going to see if "She Has Her Mother's Laugh" is available from our library.
Machka - Do you think a trike or recumbent bike might be easier for your husband to manage or would the left leg still be a bit of a challenge?
Lisa - Too funny! I rather like the idea of vehemently invoking Judas Priest.
Allie - My heart hurts for you and your Chester. Those last days with a beloved pet can be so very bittersweet.
AZTeri - Wow, 34.55 miles sounds like quite an accomplishment!
Sarah - Welcome! It's never too late!
I got behind again. Seems to be my normal state over the weekend... spend all week catching up only to fall behind again when Friday hits. We went to Wimberley, a small town in Central Texas, to watch their very first Pride march with our nephew and his friend. Despite having a very busy weekend (and finishing up the shades at the river house!) I ended up Sunday evening feeling blue because I hadn't accomplished much. Think I need to put myself on a schedule for dealing with the decluttering; otherwise there's so much of it to do I'll get overwhelmed and won't even start.
I guess you could say my mind turned to warmer clothes today. We are planning a crosscountry ski trip to Colorado early next year and Luna's snow boots arrived so we tried them on and she entertained me by clopping around the house for a little while. She didn't seem too stressed out, so we'll have her wear them for frequent short periods between now and our trip.
Well, off to the grocery store now. I think I'm going to have to take over the meal planning again. Philip either can't or won't do a reasonable job of it, so there's nothing in the house to cook tonight. Think I'll try planning the meals and sending a grocery order to the store right next to his office for him to pick up after work.

Heather: Enjoy your cruise. Thank you for sharing the wonderful photos of your sons. I like your list of nine things to give up in order to be happy. The inner peace message is wonderful, too.
Pip: Happy to hear that Bob Seeger can still sing. You’re lucky to get to see the concert.
Rebecca: I look at your husband’s scar in the photo and see courage and survival for both of you. I’m so happy that he is doing well.
Rho: Keep us in the loop regarding the service dog in Portland who is looking for a new home. I have one or two friends who might be interested. Can you PM me with contact information?

Beth near Buffalo -Thanks for sharing types of hunger. That is interesting.
Rho – guess the main thing about weight loss is I have never given up on it. I never really lost post-baby weight and got into the 190s. Had thyroid removed in 1996 and slowly started putting more on. In 2006 realized I was 5’5 and 220 and felt like a whale. Thought about going ahead and gaining more to qualify for weight loss surgery! Used Adkins instead, got down to 180 and stayed there several years. Started using MFP in 2014 to track food for wellness points at work and discovered I could lose weight that way. Got down to 160. Husband died in 2015 and decided to take care of myself. Down to 145, two hip replacements later-back to 162 and this March decided I was darned if I would go any further up (felt miserable at that weight). Came back to MFP and checked out community instead of just logging and I am slowly learning how it is supposed to work. Don’t work it perfectly, but feel so much better. It has taken me 13 years to lose 80 pounds, but it’s worth the effort.
Annie – great news about your uncle.
Yvonne – the doggie snow boots are cute. We always had larger dogs and never considered using them.
Treating myself to a vacation day and some shopping tomorrow. Have a work conference in Columbus Weds, Thursday and Friday, so I am paying for hotel tomorrow night myself. Decided to hit outlet mall and see if I can find a decent suit and a couple of other odds and ends. Need to get a winter coat suitable for shoveling, etc. Hopefully find some blouses for work. Big treat is I am not setting alarm tonight. I may stay wake up close to normal time, but it will be my body doing it.
Take care all,

So our trip to Seattle airport was ok. I asked my son if he could drive our car there, to help out my husband. Well that backfired. My son is an awful driver. His van is a right-hand drive so he was very close to the outer edge of the road. He also has a lead foot, and tailgates! At one point a car passed us really closely, so my son did it back to her. My husband said to son, " that was uncalled for, do NOT do that in our car". I tried to keep the mood light, and my son and I chatted, but husband (thankfully), kept silent. He vented after wee dropped him off. I told him I tried to do a good thing, to help him out.
Today instead of exercising, husband dropped me off at the Officers Club, and they had it set up for blood donation. My blood pressure was 120/95. Kind of a lot of "dump trucks", but that's a good thing right? It went well. I got a tee shirt. 👍
Today I made chicken noodle soup. Husband had two bowls.💖. I had 1 and a bit more that I couldn't fit in my mason jars!
Today I recd 2 letters from pen pals. Its so much fun!

LuciB! i had RNY bypass surgery January 2nd and hit a h__l if a road bump at that weight about 6 weeks ago. I am in a plateau now right at my 100# loss point - 162-165 I think going on this trip to Mexico helped. I’ve learned a lot about making some of the things I liked best, and intend to re-create them here. They’re simple, and a couple involve roasting tomatoes, which I’ve never tried before! Keep at it, but remember to check with your doctors about new forms of exercise. My doctor gave s form “no” to treadmills. He wants me oytdoirs in natural light, and on slightly uneven surfaces with a few rises and dips. I’m happy to oblige. He said that a bit of instability will help my core muscles more than the treadmill, and for my problems there’s actually less danger of falling. The natural light also helps combat depression. Good luck with all you’re doing to stay healthy. You’ve come to a VERY good place!

This afternoon after bowling, my stomach felt distended. Then, when I was driving to mahjongg, I got such a cramp in my stomach. Still a little cramp but nothing like before. I had some yogurt, crackers and a chocolate bran muffin (probably not the best choice).
Tomorrow…dexa, mammo, volunteer, movies

Tracey, see if the dentist will use the type of Novacain they give heart patients. I had that when I was having a short term arrhythmia problem, Ian’s i was suddenly able to relax and let go of my fear. I reacted a bit when I had a twinge or two, but my heart didn’t keep on racing every time something elevated it. I ask for it every time now. Going to the dentist has become a different experience!

Hi Gals,
Lisa – glad to hear what the out come of the job up and down, I remembered the stress about the change of supervisor and had not heard an update. I do believe that having options allows us to have the “freedom” to step back and view the situation more objectively.
The new mud room is fab!
Rho – glad to hear you mention fiber and protein, as staying within calories is easier for me when I am at or above the MFP recommended fiber. I get it from veggies, I have chosen not to add protein or fiber supplements, but to use foods in the least processed version I can. It helps that I am a 3-4 day a week vegetarian, so I get a lot of beans (high in fiber).
Rita – hang in there ! tummy issues can steal your get up and go very quickly, and it’s been very hot there.
Lanette – just a thought my vacuum had a similar problem to yours I took it to the vacuum repair guy in my town and for $12 he repaired it… while I waited, it needed a new belt.
Annie – great news!
Heather – all the pictures are great! Red looks fab on you.
