@durhammfp That looks so peaceful!
Congrats @username301 and @emmamcgarity for your distance PR's.
Congratulations on your PR, too, @martaindale!
Well done everyone!

Cracker day here today - first proper good weather day in months. Warm, sunny, gentle breeze. I woke after a broken night's sleep (husband came home at 1am, daughter No.1 woke at 4am, and daughter No.2 came into bed for a cuddle at 6am) fully expecting to turn over and go back to sleep, but with youngest making me overheat I got up and saw it was going to be a stunner day and for the first time in ages was itching to get out and run in it. Ignoring the fact my legs are still smashed from my recent week of run-yoga-track-pilates-run-yoga and I could barely make it down the stairs, I headed out for a gentle 12k with my running group and just soaked in the sunshine.
I also took Miss 7 for a couple of 1.5km training run this weekend as she's just entered her first 'Tryathlon' and is keen to start training (too cute).
I'm in taper for next weekend's half and need to somehow get my muscles calm and relaxed in the next few days. I have a massage booked for Thursday but may also sneak in a trip to my osteo.
I was supposed to follow my run with a 'bliss' restorative yoga class but I thought the weather was way too nice to miss so headed home to mow the lawn and then spent about three hours water blasting the deck and outdoor dining furniture - a most pleasing exercise for my OCD tendencies.
Hubby now has ribs on the barbecue, filling the house and garden with the most delicious smoky scent. So I think I'll go and mix a wee G&T, relax on my sparkling clean deck, and toast the fact that summer's on its way (and school's back tomorrow!).

@ContraryMaryMary That sounds like a near perfect day! Love that Little Miss 7 is in "training."
@PastorVincent Love that horseless carriage.
Yesterday, I played an unplanned tennis match. The weather was perfect..in the 60°F's, cloudy, with a slight breeze. When I got home, I took Tippy, the dog, for a 2 mile walk. Well, I went 2 miles. She did her own thing, but stayed close for the first mile which I do in my neighbor's cow pasture. I do the rest up and down my driveway, so she finds other things to do. She gets bored with that. There's a picture of my speed demon under the spoiler.14 -

Clear and frosty this morning; good day to run a race. Air temperature was 39 degrees F; since I had been running in shorts and a short sleeve tech shirt when temps were in the low 40s, decided to run that way today.
Set my watch pace for 6:10 per kilometer; goal was to run each kilometer a little faster than that.
Never managed to get into a rhythm. Wind picked up during the race, and was in our faces for about half the distance. Excuses; excuses; blah; blah; blah. Neither met nor maintained my goal pace. No under 30:00; no PR; but did finish first (out of two) in my age group. Race season for me is officially over; I'll do some rumination and evaluation later.
@martaindale Great job on your 10 miler!!!

I was hoping to sleep in this morning, but the cat had other ideas. Ok, I'll get up so you can have breakfast at 4am on a Sunday. Next weekend, your Saturday dinner is going to be late!
After coffee, I did my longest run in a month. I read somewhere about a Strava challenge that was 45 minutes for a long run. I should have done that, since that's about where I am right now. I mean, it took me more than 45 minutes to run that far but I'm working my way back up to one hour long runs by the end of the month.
This afternoon is the Celebration of Life for my friend and coworker who recently passed.

@durhammfp that looks like a great place to run!
It is. I'm visiting a friend in California. Next week I will be back home in NC, but there are nice places to run there too. Maybe not as spectacular, though.
I'm realizing now that this may be an unexpected benefit for me with this running thing--it gets me out to see places I may not see otherwise when I'm traveling. And I really like that.9 -
@durhammfp - I was going to ask as well where it was. It looks very much like where I was hiking and running this last week in Cambria CA. I will be posting some pictures in a bit.2

I am working on getting caught up on all the posts, races and great runs. Looks like everyone is doing great!
On the question regarding running and what to wear for the weather... I don't have much of an opinion because it really never gets that cold here. I have been wearing long sleeved tops all summer though for sun protection (got tired of spending so much in sunscreen) and I will continue to wear the same as it gets cooler. Occasionally I may need a vest or jacket if it is super windy or raining but nothing much more than that.
I apologize in advance for the long post and all the pictures...
We are back from a wonderful few days along the CA coast. DH was attending a Navy reunion and I, well I was just along for the ride with Hobbes the Vizsla. On Thursday Hobbes and I went hiking/walking to just explore some of the trails in Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. I couldn't find the trails I wanted to get to, to go up further into the preserve but will save that for another visit. On Friday I needed a long run so despite Strava issues and not knowing really where we were going, Hobbes and I set out from the hotel to find the trails that would get us down to the ocean. We did find the trail and it ended up being much steeper and narrower than anticipated. I didn't have trail shoes with me, just my Topo road shoes which are not the best for climbing up or down slippery paths, so we just took it slow. Once down and across Highway 1 we hit the Santa Rosa Creek trail and ran it all the way almost to the beach. It was shady, cool and lovely and we could feel the cool ocean breeze as we got closer. Note there were hot (Santa Ana) winds overnight and even when we started out on the run. By the time we hit the Moonstone Beach boardwalk the sun was warm but the breeze from the ocean kept things just cool enough. We ran pretty much as far north as we could on the boardwalk/trail to San Simeon beach and then headed back.Top of the trail where we descended and ran across to the highway and across. You can see just a bit of the highway across the fieldRunning there made today's run along our little river trail seem very mundane! I just want to go back and run that area in Cambria again and again!

@martaindale awesome job on the race!
@Tramboman congrats on the AG place!
Rest day for me today. I cut yesterday's run way short because my left quad was bugging me. It feels the same as the problem I had last year with my right quad, just not as bad at this point, and I intend to not let it get that bad. Ugggh. I did have a long run Thursday followed by extra cycling Friday (I know I took on some hills too fast as well when I was in a hurry or didn't have a bike lane and had to go in traffic), and am hoping to manage it with compression, stretching, foam rolling and rest. It feels fine today but we'll see how running goes tomorrow. I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong with my form that's causing this, weird that it totally moved from my right side bothering me off & on for months, and now that side isn't complaining at all.
October goal 100 miles
Upcoming races:
Oct. 19 - CityTrail trail 5k (#1 of 6 in the series)

It was a gorgeous day here today, perfect for the Empire State Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k. I was a spectator and it was a lot of fun. A bunch of our run club members were in all the races, so it was awesome to be able to cheer for everyone and take pics and ring my cowbell like a crazy person.
They started the marathon at 8 am, half at 9:30 and 10k at 10. I started out stationed around mile 5 and was happy to see a guy from our club with a commanding lead in the marathon already (he won!) and catch several other of the marathoners there. My friend was doing great and was on pace to make her goal. Then I went back towards mile 2-3 to see the half marathoners and the 10k turnaround. It got a little crazy because the course was kind of poorly marked and with no volunteer course pointers. I ended up taking a position to point people where to go at a couple of spots. Eventually, I waited at mile 23 and caught my friend and ran with her to the finish chute. She did not make her goal time but she ran strong and placed first in her age group. I was very happy for her.

10/13: 10.26 miles
44.57/100 miles completed
I ran 10.26 miles today. It was perfect running weather. I actually slept in a little since I didn't have to worry about beating the heat and that was really nice. It was in the mid 50's with a breeze, but not too windy. The sun was shining and it was just a beautiful fall day. I decided that I would run out to the lake. It's 6.5 miles from my house which roundtrip is further than I wanted to go so I drove to my office and parked and ran to the lake from there which gave me a nice 10 mile route. I'll have to do that again. Then when I got home my husband had ribs on the barbeque and they were just perfect. It has been a really great day.

Snuck in 10 miles today. Weather was great, but time was short, happy to have gotten out there at least even if Strava says I did not try very hard. Grrr.10
-
Missed a lot, been away for the weekend.
I went for an 8k run this morning! Was the longest I've done in MONTHS! It felt fantastic. I could have gone for 10,but had only prepared for 8, so 8 it was!
Then went home and pottered around with our new spa pool! It sounds fancier than it is. It's an inflatable spa! But of course got called to work before I could actually take a dip, and now I'm standing around in theatre, while the surgeons do their thing, writing this message.13 -
1013-13.3k total 22k goal-100k
Been lurking since the start of the month. Not a lot of running going on, but working on it. Went for a longish run on Sunday. It was 13F when I started out, so I wore a thin long-sleeved shirt and shorts, plus a cap because it was drizzling slightly. Felt almost perfect - rolled up the sleeves when it got warm and pulled them down when the wind picked up. Gloves would have been nice too.
My local running club has decided to see if we can run a total of 15940km by the end of the year, as a tribute to Kipchoge's time. We've got 300 members so it shouldn't be hard to do, but a number like that does kinda boggle the mind.
I've recently got my grubby paws on a free (!) copy of this book, and been slowly working my way through it. Last Friday I incorporated some of their moves into my strength routine, and I'm still sore today! Wow. Need to do more of that, I guess.
Congrats to everyone on getting in great runs! I'll go back to lurking now...10 -
@noblsheep I like the looks of the book! I may have to get it when I'm cleared. Why are you lurking? Did I miss something? (Ya probs cuz I don't keep up since I'm not running) Wishing you well!0

That'll be a "NO" for today. I cut my run down to not-quite-a-mile (1.5k) and am now stretching/rolling and going to wrap my quad. It will be okay. I'm past the point where I can do any additional training for my upcoming 5k's and half marathon, but I can definitely mess up my leg if I overdo it.12 -
@martaindale great 10 mile race. That's the way to get your PR!
@Tramboman congrats on the AG place! Doesn't matter how many were in your AG, you came out on top!
Beautiful morning with 60F, light wind. Training plan calls for 35 miles this week, but the PTC 15K is this Saturday, so will only get 9 miles in. Needing to make up for that, decided to run 10 miles this morning. Felt terrible the first mile, but body parts loosened up, aches and pains calmed down, and eventually settled into a good rhythm. Wednesday calls for an 11 mile tempo run, but this 'easy' run was only :06/mi slower than that, so should be ok. May have to do a few miles on Thursday when I get to Atlanta. So much for tapering before a race 😒

I should really check the temperature before I leave the house in the mornings to run. I didn’t realize it was 40F until I was on my way to meet my group. It was actually 35 when I first looked at my car temp reading but it’s always a few degrees warmer in the city where I run. At home, I park inside our garage so I don’t have the experience of walking outside until I get out to run. I lay my clothes out the night before so that I don’t have to take the time to find them in the mornings and it’s easier to just go with whatever I’ve chosen. After the first mile it wasn’t too bad but I think long sleeves would have been better than my short sleeve tech shirt although one of my friends was in a tank top and she seemed to do just fine.
@Tramboman – sorry that you’re disappointed in your 5K race pace but congratulations on your AG win!
@shanaber – Love the pictures of the CA coast. I love being able to explore in different places by getting out and running. I saw a lot of Scotland in my recent trip that my travel mates missed because they don’t run and I would get out before they got stirring in the mornings. It sometimes meant that I missed having a sit-down breakfast, but I never went hungry!
@kgirlhart – that blue sky and the blue water! How pretty!!
@martaindale – Congratulations on your 10-mile race!

I stopped at Walgreens before work this morning for some hydration and the manager (a former co-worker at UPS) asked why I was limping. I told him to shut up, because I meant to run, today. The co-worker I usually drive home texted before work that he was calling in, so I had my shoes and earbuds and phone armband ready to go for afterwards.
By the time I was done working, *I* couldn't tell that I was limping, and that's the metric I'm using. I went for a run in the forest preserve near work. The knee twinged a few times in the "pinched nerve in the front of the knee" way, and didn't cramp up in the "Ow, something's torn or overextended" way. My right hip is a little sore in a "I worked out!" kind of way. I'll have to keep an eye on that, maybe. I might be bad at listening to my body.
I didn't quite manage to run the entire trail loop, but I had stopped for a walk break only about 30 seconds before my episode of Zombies, Run! ended, so I decided that was a perfectly fine "Welcome Back" run, and stopped the app at 4.23 kilometers (they'll only bark your distance and time on whole numbers, and I like more frequent updates, so I run from Zombies by the kilometer...) which converts to 2.6 miles (rounded down to the nearest 10th of a mile.)
I still haven't gotten around to checking out any yoga.12 -

I enjoyed your blog post! So good to read you have recovered your former speed!
When I was young and in the SCA I traveled out there to attend a camping event called “Estrella Wars.” I wonder where it was in comparison and how similar the terrain is?0 -
did a 5k run this saturday. it was cold. it was blustery. and someone forgot to mention the hills in the course description. i did pretty well. it was 3 min slower than my last one but those hills were steep enough for me to walk them. i was feeling achy (aerial hoop practice friday night and autoimmune)
mile 2 had iced vanilla lattes shots along with water and gatorade
one other kink was there were only 4 portapotties. i think they could have used at least double.
it was a fun race. the people running were friendly which isn't always the case in my area.
then i stopped by the rescue and played with puppies13 -
