I passed a lady walking her dog towards the beginning of my long run today... then 2 hours later when I was on my way home, same neighborhood but different spot, I passed her again. I was wondering to myself if she'd been walking her dog for 2 hours, or if this was their second time out in 2 hours, thinking that was strange... and then we smiled at each other as I went past and it seemed clear she recognized me... and I realized that between the two of us, I was definitely the strange one cause I'd obviously been running for 2 hours and counting. My cold/allergies again weren't too troublesome while I was out, although 21.5k did feel awfully long, but again, now that I'm done, I just want to crash somewhere. But I've got stuff to do, and feel better than yesterday, so moving forward
October goal 100 miles
Upcoming races:
Oct. 19 - CityTrail trail 5k (#1 of 6 in the series)
Oct. 26 - Botanical Autumn 5k
Oct. 27 - Lublin Half Marathon13 -

Reading the forums, it seems a lot of watches have the same issue following an update a week or so ago. Wonder if it is actually relates
I received an email from Garmin a couple of weeks ago indicating that if I had updated my iPhone to IOS 13 and am having trouble connecting or getting notifications on my Garmin device to refer to their support center for helpful tips. Not really related to the battery life though. More of an issue with the IOS 13 requiring Bluetooth Sharing to be turned on.

finally on the board for october. i've been lazy.
last night, i decided no more excuses. i took the old girl out because i wasn't feeling speed demon's pace.
it was a nice cool night. old girl behaved well focusing on her job(to run in front of me) and not on the many things she might need to protect me from.i'm also watching my foster. she has stitches from her spay. so i can't run her but she's 2 years old and still got some puppy in her. i'm hoping i can take her out soon.speed demon wasn't feeling the morning also new skin for my watch11 -
Lucky for me DH always works Saturdays so that's my normal long run day.
I have my first race since I broke my leg and it's on the trail this weekend! Just going for finishing, no PR. No racing. Just a fun, easy trail 5k.17 -
I ran a quicker 3 miles this morning. Temps were about the same as yesterday felt: 24F. I chose to wear a short technical tee under my thicker long sleeve shirt, and a real hat rather than just a buff for my ears. That worked well. I also pushed the pace a bit today - my average moving pace according to Garmin was more than 1 minute per mile faster than usual. Tempo-ish? I think I could do better but have to be cautious with the dogs.
Speaking of which, I was feeling so great at the end of my run, I thought I'd really pick up the pace for the last bit. Just as I got going, I saw a flash of shadow run across the street and into a yard. Kira also saw the cat and started to take chase. I had a brief "oh *kitten*" moment that I would repeat my fall from August, but was able to put on the brakes fast enough that it didn't happen. Lesson learned. No sprinting with a dog attached.13 -
Winter temps starting to now.. 50s and 60s (we will go to 0 and below eventually) so now I need to start planning for my Raynuds again. 60's already means glove weather for me. In a few years when my son is graduated from HS and moves on, I might move to the South USA or Southwest USA to escape this issue. November will mark the end of my racing season till Spring, so will soon have to drop down to more maintenance level running, much shorter runs, while focusing on my anti-t-rex plan.8

October goal: 100 miles
10/1: 5.75 miles
10/2: 6.27 miles
10/5: 1.01 miles warm up
3.14 miles Old Rip 5k
10/8: 6.27 miles
10/9: 5.63 miles
31.31/100 miles completed
I had a really good 6.24 mile run this morning. It was kind of tough, but the kind of tough run that you feel really good about afterwards. The forecast called for 77°F with 15-20 mph winds. I really don't like wind and there is a cold front forecast for this evening so I actually considered moving my run to Friday when it is supposed to be cool again. But looking at the forecast I decided that I would rather run in 20 mph south winds at 77° than in 20 mph north winds at 45°. I told myself to try not to focus on how hard wind makes the run and how slow I would be and just focus on staying relaxed and keeping my form. It really worked too. I didn't pay much attention to my pace and ended up a little faster than yesterday's run. I didn't feel as tired as I did yesterday either. It wasn't one of those runs where I felt like I could run forever, but it was a run where I felt like I got a good workout, but didn't struggle too much. I did try to run East and West as much as possible so I didn't have to run directly into the wind too much. But all in all it was a great start to the day.

"The knee doesn't hurt. It'll be fine."
"Really? So why am I limping?"
"Shut up..."
Anyway, I think I probably shouldn't run until I get the limp sorted out, since I don't trust myself about whether or not it hurts. Which I would seriously question if someone else said something like that. I don't have answers, though. Mostly doesn't hurt. Limping anyway. And then sometimes it hurts. Definitely limping, then. Wish I knew what I'd done, and how to prevent it happening again. Suspect stretching might help. Can't imagine any reason it would be a BAD idea.
I'll run my Brew 5k, too. Hopefully I'll have sorted the limp out by then. I've got nearly a month. But I'm not registering for anything new until it feels better. Ha ha ha. I mean, until I've stopped limping.
I shall commence lurking.
As @PastorVincent would say, I'm not a doctor, but my personal experience with knees that hurt while running and on and off, gradually worsening to the point of having to walk without bending it, turned out to be caused by severely contractured calf and quad muscles. Took plenty of physiotherapy, massage and stretching along with a back-to-basics approach to running. Now my knees start to grumble at me when I'm due another massage or haven't been stretching enough, feels like someone put a metal vice round them and slowly tightens it. I'm currently experimenting with swimming as cross training, seems to be helping loosen the muscles up.
Try and stretch as much as possible but not if it really hurts!
I'm happy to hear that stretching is the right track, but not likely to start getting massages. Interestingly, my knee twinges more frequently while walking than while running, and when it acts up, I have more trouble straightening it than bending it. So, I'm not sure we're experiencing the same problems. It feels pretty good today, and I didn't catch myself limping, so I'm thinking if nothing happens between now and tomorrow, I'll do a short run to ease back into it. But I did walk up less gradually than usual this morning, because I pointed my toes to stretch and my calf immediately began to cramp. I stopped that stretch and it calmed right down, but I was Awake! And there is certainly muscle tightness. So there's that...
Stretching. Yeah. Probably time to take up Yoga. With ...Adrienne? right? I'll google it.3 -

Today was an easy run, was kind of sore from leg work I did yesterday, and really just wanted to run and enjoy and not worry about time. Was a cool 53 when I headed out with a bit of wind. Won't be long until I need to pull my gloves out either.
Tomorrow will probably be a rest day, and then try for a bit longer run - maybe 8 miles on Sat.
Going to the local sports store to get my award for my race last weekend (I left early so they have them all at the sponsor store). I'm pretty sure it's a gift certificate, so I'll probably spend it while there, LOL.
@PastorVincent I'd say come down to NC, but we've been having colder temps these past few winters that would for sure require gloves for you! I have what they call cold urticaria - my skin gets itchy and breaks out with little red hives when exposed to cold (could be water, ac, weather etc). Have had it for half my life, though it's gotten better. Its quite rare, and the only thing one can do is a)Not go out in the cold - not feasible - b)cover up as much a possible. I'm usually the one bundled up c)Take an antihistamine - which I don't want to do every time cause then I'd be sleeping most of the winter. LOL.
@autumnblade75 I'm thinking the stretching and yoga is a good idea. I think I'll join you and go look for this Adriene.

I don't understand the fascination with the nice round number of a time of 2:00:00 as if it's some sort of mystical barrier.
Setting a new world record, now that's cool. The fact that it's under a nice round number...meh

If you ever listen to podcasts, the science of sport has recently done an hour long episode on the 1:59 challenge. Its very informative, has a lot more depth than the article. From the course, the pacesetters and the shoe he is using.3 -
Well I'm still on track for my goal this week - 1 indoor and 1 outdoor run. I've already done the outdoor and REALLY REALLY wanted to go again tonight but it is POURING down rain and honestly I'm just not sure I'm that dedicated, lol. In other news, I am on target to keep within my caloric goal today. Provided that I don't find some chocolate somewhere. If the rain lets up at any point I'll be able to go run tonight and my daughter even said she would maybe bring her bicycle and pace me. That would make it so much more fun. Great job, everyone, on all your hard work! While running errands this morning, I saw someone biking in the pouring rain with all their gear and I said, "Now THAT is a dedicated person." #lifegoals9

She has all sorts of awesome videos, there are some for runners, some for beginners, some for specific areas or issues. I've just started her 30 days of yoga challenge. Well, today was day 6 and therefore core work (entitled 6-pack abs, groan). Yeah, don't tell me any jokes tomorrow cause I think laughing will hurt.

So many really good race reports recently, congrats everyone. @MegaMooseEsq and @7lenny7 It’s funny to think that our races were run alongside the same river, with us being so far apart. Love the mighty Mississippi.
I’m getting ready for my first race run by time and not by distance, the 24 hour tour d’Esprit. As many loops of a certified 1 mile track as possible from 3 pm Friday to 3 pm Saturday. And wouldn’t you know it the weather is laughing at me - up until last week the temps were nearly 100, and during the race it’s supposed to be raining with a feels like of 38! Wah! What happened to running in nice weather in the 50s and 60s, is that too much to ask? It’s been beautiful today and yesterday, which were a lifting day and a rest day.
I had all my running stuff stolen out of my car recently and had just finished replacing my summer necessities, wasn’t planning on replacing the winter ones quite yet, so yesterday was a scramble to get some gloves, something to cover my ears, and a hat. My running raincoat now is useless because the detachable hood was in my bag, so I have no raincoat. Buff doesn’t even make the kind of headband I used to have anymore. Husband needed new hat, gloves, and sleeves. I think we’re set for tomorrow but I’m very grumpy. Commiserated with the salesman at Rei who also had his running bag stolen out of his car recently - he didn’t lose much of monetary value but his bag was decorated with stickers from many destination races and it made him unhappy. Thieves suck!
Anyway, I’m looking forward to trying something new! No idea how long we’ll be able to go, since the mile loop is half gravel and my legs have a gravel allergy. But we’re going to give it a whirl! Does anyone who has done one have any advice for a 24 hr race, re: pacing, fueling, gear, and so on?5 -
@rheddmobile Chicago this weekend is supposed to be 40's and 50's. I hope for a good time.
Thinking back, my 5K PR a d marathon PR were a year ago in Sept. when I lived in Iowa. I am just now realizing that perhaps this was weather related. I am going to tell myself that anyway, because it makes me feel confident about Sunday.9 -

That sounds fun! I've only done one 12 hour race, but here's my thoughts- Bring at least one extra pair of shoes, of a different model. If your feet start to get sore, just a change of shoe might be all you need. Also bring a couple extra pair of socks
- Consider alternating your loops so you run one, walk the next, etc.
- Don't run so slow that your form becomes inefficient. Better to take walking breaks.
- If the loop has any uphill, walk it.
- Every once in a while go into a fast stride for 20 to 30 seconds to wake up your system and get your stride efficiency back.
- With a such a short loop, just bring the bare minimum in gear. I have a 12 hour race this Sunday with a 5 mile loop. No need to bring any food or water with you.
- Start eating right from the start to keep your energy up. If you wait until you're hungry, you will have a hard time catching up.
- Don't hesitate to take a break between loops if you need the break, either physically or mentally.
Good luck! My race goes from 7AM to 7PM Sunday. 5 mile loop, with a 1 mile loop for the last 2 hours.

Thinking back, my 5K PR a d marathon PR were a year ago in Sept. when I lived in Iowa. I am just now realizing that perhaps this was weather related. I am going to tell myself that anyway, because it makes me feel confident about Sunday.
Definitely is. The low 50s is totally PR weather.1
