It's time for the OCTOBER 2019 Running Challenge! Whose gettin' spooky this month?
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the August 2019 Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10761981/september-2019-monthly-running-challenge#latest
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until October 1, 2019 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody elses Chapter 20.

Oh hi.
I'll try for 40
8 -
Hey @Elise4270 you did it!!! Thanks!!! 😊
Eeek, my marathon training plan has me doing 133 miles in October. Sounds daunting, but I'll give it a shot.11 -
Thanks for setting it up @Elise4270!! I am in for the 100 mile club for October!10
-
Ooh first page an' all..
I'll try and be back properly. There'll be a race report from yesterday to follow once I've recovered enough.
No idea how many miles to set. But for the next few months I'm on a 10k speed mission!!!12 -
Borrowing from @Mobycarp, my theoretical goal for October is 70 miles, but my real goal is to stay healthy.13
-
Thanks for setting us up @Elise4270!
I'm in for 100 miles for October. Maybe fall will decide to visit Texas this month.9 -
Thanks, @Elise4270 for getting us going.
@MobyCarp always proclaimed he could outrun a lot of people, but he could never outrun his fork.
I'm in for 135k again.7 -
100 miles again for me. Have the Auckland Half on the 20th which is the one race I do each year to compare my performance. I had a great day last year and got a PB so, no pressure...10
-
I will keep my goal at 200 miles (minimum). I am drastically reducing my daily miles until my leg heals. Will continue my daily running to keep my streak unless my leg decides otherwise.16
-
I'm going to go with 97 miles for October's goal.
I have my goal races in October - back-to-back half marathons on the 19th and 20th. I am starting a gradual taper now and I will for sure take a week off after. Kind of a strange goal number, but that's what I came up with in my quick estimate from my training plan and it's also my monthly average from the last 4 years of running, so it seems appropriate. It may end up being a bit high though as I'm definitely prioritizing rest both in prep for the races and in recovery after.
Upcoming races:
10/5/2019 Dash for Democracy 5k, Fayetteville, NY
10/19/2019 I-35 Challenge KC Half Marathon, Kansas City MO
10/20/2019 I-35 Challenge DSM Half Marathon, Des Moines, IA
11/02/2019 Tri-State NJ Spartan Super, Vernon NJ (maybe?)
11/10/2019 Syracuse Half Marathon, Syracuse, NY
11/23/2019 Long Island Spartan Sprint, Bethpage, NY
13 -
I'll sign up for 160 miles again, but hope to actually do more than that.
Also, I have the Chicago Marathon on 10/13.13 -
Thanks for setting it up @Elise4270!
BTW- You said you wanted quotes, what about @MobyCarp 's one about jogging? I think it was something like:
There is walking and there is running. There is no such thing as jogging unless you find a dead body
But that is not quite it. Need to dig through the old threads and find it. I will try to do that soon.11 -

Foud it, from October 2018: Around here, joggers are people who find dead bodies. Never found a dead body? Then you're a runner.17 -
Thanks for the quote @PastorVincent and @Scott6255 regarding outrunning your fork. (That's why I only eat finger foods). 👻 I'll put together a collection for November.
'Til then... Any questions? I had one but forgot it.5 -
I'm in! Just bookmarked the thread so I don't lose it this time. I don't have any races planned for October but I do want to keep my weekly long runs over 10 miles. To reduce wear and tear on my body I only run 3 or 4 times a week and do cardio, yoga and strength training on the other days. So I think I'm in for 60 miles this month. Maybe I'll have a good month, I'll go over and pleasantly surprise myself.10
-
Thanks for setting us up @Elise4270
My marathon plan has me down for 220km (~135 miles) this month @Scott6255 it looks like we're at similar points in our training plans12 -
100 miles for October, I think. Somehow I'm feeling inspired to bump it up a little. Maybe it's just the endorphins.
I was thinking about @MobyCarp running the hall while his eggs cooked.11 -
Thanks for setting us up @Elise4270!
I'm in for 120km this month with a stretch goal (if I actually do everything on the training plan) of 134km. Yikes!
I managed to finish September with 117km and I had to miss a run, so it's doable.
Long runs are long (for me at least) for the next 3 weeks, then I taper for HM on Nov. 3rd.
Speaking of which, I will dig out the spreadsheet and start seeing who is still interested in doing the tribute for @MobyCarp when I find a few spare minutes. I still can't cook eggs without missing him.
13 -
Nominally, 100km this month.
Main goal is to get faster for my 10km race in November.
Secondary goals:
- Cycle twice a week.
- Strength training twice a week.10 -
@eleanorhawkins - I was thinking of the spreadsheet too and seeing if anyone else wanted to run. Do you recall if we posted it in the Strava group and/or on FB?
I think I have the original but the updated version is in Google Docs...4 -
I'm joining the 100-mile goal club. Thanks for setting us up @Elise4270!9
-
I'm in for 150 miles this month,
I have two races for sure, the TC 10 mile on Sunday and the Loopet Loppet 12 Hour Trail Race the Sunday after that. My goal is to beat my last year's distance of 42 miles.
I've decided to skip all the races the day before the Loopet Loppet. I had signed up for the half marathon before I knew that they changed the weekend of the Loppet. A half would be too much the day before and I'm not about to pay the additional $22 fee to switch to the 5k.
There's a 50/50 chance I'll register for for a 50k in South Dakota the last Saturday of the month.17 -

Hello, October!
Met my Sept goal, plus some so I will say 90 for this month. Maybe 100!
I have a 10k coming up and am contemplating a 10 miler at the end of the month. Undecided on that one.
Today is rest day, so starting October with a run will be good!

@eleanorhawkins - I was thinking of the spreadsheet too and seeing if anyone else wanted to run. Do you recall if we posted it in the Strava group and/or on FB?
I think I have the original but the updated version is in Google Docs...
I didn't sign up originally because I couldn't open Google docs due to restrictions on my work computer. I would like to participate to honor @MobyCarp though.5 -
I just looked. I am accidentally close to 2019 miles in 2019. It was not a goal when I started the year, but might as well make it one now...
13 -
I would like my goal to be 80-90 but not sure if that is even realistic yet. So I'm going to say 40-50 miles.13
-
Last month for my training plan before my first HM (early Nov)! Plan calls for 70 miles. And I have a 10 mile race in a couple of weeks. Now, about that fall weather...14
-
October Goal: 220km
01/10: 10.43
Total KM run: 10.43
I managed to get myself out of bed this morning and out on the streets by 5:15am. My lamp died about 3km into my run. I knew the battery was running low last week but I got myself completely mixed up with daylight savings. I thought on my last dark run 'oh it's daylight savings next week so I won't need my lamp anymore' completely forgetting that it's actually darker in the mornings when daylight savings begins!
Luckily I run in fairly well lit areas so I don't need it to actually see for the most part, but I like to have the light to shine towards cars and cyclists to help them see me more easily. Lamp is now on charge for tomorrow!16 -
Monthly question
What is your approach to the upcoming holidays and abundance of food? How will it affect or effect your training or goals?
How old are you? Not chronologically. Is there an age where you knew who you wanted to be and have found that you’ve held tight to it, or perhaps comeback to it years later? What things have always interested you?
Blah blah ——Why’s my hips hurt and yours don’t? Why my mama gotta squish me crooked and yours gave you a condo with a large pool? (I’m tired... just stalling for the next question from the ether to appear)....
You know it’s Rosh Hashanah? L’ Shana Tova. Now forgive me if I’ve offended or been unsupportive of you this year. Y’all know I do love you and wish you a blessed year and riches.
Well, someone other than me has the question I can’t seem to grasp. Out with it.10
