Or escape artists. We had a rottie that figured out how to open the garage doors (DH old house had handles not knobs - he had to get creative to keep her in). She would run. She spent time in puppy jail. She was not neglected, just too smart. LOL5 -
I ran 2. something miles this morning. Temp was just above 40F and wearing the buff as a headband worked great. It helped to hold up my headlamp and didn't feel terribly hot like a hat. Of course, warmer temps and a shorter run aren't much of a test.
I had planned to run a faster 5k to celebrate my year of running but neither of the dogs were really interested. I think Jackson stopped to sniff every tree and shrub while we were walking a warmup, though we ran our usual pace after. I had expected Kira would be up for a faster run but nope! She wanted to run but every time I sped up, I think she slowed down. lol Oh well. I dropped her off and ran my fastest 400m per Strava. Maybe I'll run a test mile or 5k this weekend.9 -

Today is meant to be the last of this heat wave. When I went for my run this morning it was 73F with 915 humidity, and it certainly felt it. Was dripping sweat half way though. Right now it is 97& feels like 100F, with a high of 98 later😒
So, today was a bit weird. I usually run fasted - only a cup of coffee and some water - on runs an hour or less and never feel hungry, or get hunger pangs etc.
But today for some reason I was super hungry? Was a strange feeling to have during a run for me. I mean I ate enough yesterday (I think), even had a peanut butter sandwich as a night snack cause I had the calories left. Don't know what that was about.

I am very far behind in the thread. I missed my goal for last month by about 10 miles. I’m good with that. This month’s goal is 50-60 miles. I’ll call it 50 and anything extra is bonus.
Monthly question
What is your approach to the upcoming holidays and abundance of food? How will it affect or effect your training or goals?
I am currently eating at a small deficit. I have 5 more pounds to lose to reach a healthy BMI.... 11 more pounds to goal weight.
For Halloween I find it easier to not eat any of the treat candy. I wait as long as possible to buy it so that it’s not in the house to tempt me. I already buy small “fun sized” candies that I pack in my lunchbox daily for work to keep me from feeling deprived. Somehow mentally associating them with my lunchbox keeps me from dipping into them at home.
Thanksgiving and Christmas I’ll just track the food and let the MFP tracker tell me I am over my target for the day. I’ll mentally call it a maintenance day and go back to a deficit after a few days. I find that keeping fruit and veggies on hand to snack on helps me be mindful of my choices.7 -

Runner's World used to have Yoga for Runners. I LOVE the recovery yoga for after long runs. It's about 20 minutes. I was going by memory for a while then broke my leg so not sure if they are still available.0 -
I’m on the board for October with a short run to the gym on Tuesday in the pouring rain (not going to lie, it was a lot of fun). I’m planning on doing the same tomorrow, then it’s race weekend!
@zeesparrow: I highly recommend trying arm sleeves if you haven’t already (I have three pairs, including these) - they’re much easier to take off and stow away than a jacket or long-sleeved shirt. You can get more expensive arm warmers in marino but I’ve never had a problem with the cheap ones. I’m also a big fan of buffs, though I buy the cheap off-brand ones of those too. I wore two at a time for most of my runs last winter, one over my head and one over my face.
@7lenny7: I really like those pre and post run videos and do them pretty frequently. I also really like Yoga for Tired Legs, Total Body Yoga - Deep Stretch and the various bedtime videos. She also has playlists by length of the workout, which I find very helpful.

I haven't done yoga since August. They're renovating the lobby at work and have created a temporary conference room in the "yoga room". It is a large enough space ... but could you imagine doing either activity at the same time? All this talk about yoga though, I might have to do the Runner's Yoga video tonight.2 -

Is the marathon distance in decline? Interesting read from the local paper ahead of Sunday's Twin Cities Marathon. Some of the comments are really idiotic.

@rheddmobile - Here they have the shooting competitions where you move from target to target and score based on speed and accuracy. Typically t is at one of the ranges and is offered monthly or so. Not sure if you have shooting ranges where you are but I would check with them to find someone who offers it.
@7lenny7 - that kind of hang gliding looks like fun but I don't do those kinds of things. I don't even like Ferris wheels any longer.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner and @mbaker566 - I tried that with the JRT that chased and ended up biting me... nothing worked. I tried yelling at him, kicking at him, clapping my hands, etc.. The first time I was not afraid of him (angry mostly) and really thought the owners would be able to get him off as he was attacking and ripping my brand new running shoes. Once he set his mind on getting me I don't think anything would have stopped him. The second time having just been bitten less than a week before I was afraid but the owner was able to grab him before he did too much damage (just a small scratch type bite). I no longer go by that house because I am now afraid and I am sure he knows it.
@HonuNui - definitely a sign from MobyCarp! I hope we can all help you to get out the door and be a distraction from the work suck. Maybe the running will help a tiny bit to relieve some of the grief too.

We haven't had family in the area for a while so no big feasts or parties. I will cook a turkey for Thanksgiving and a ham most likely at Christmas along with veggies and mashed potatoes but it is easy for us to keep it reasonable. My brother and sister in-laws are can in the states for now but I have no idea if they will be around over the holidays. If they are they may come over but it will still be pretty simple meals.
How old are you? Not chronologically. Is there an age where you knew who you wanted to be and have found that you’ve held tight to it, or perhaps comeback to it years later? What things have always interested you?
I always loved math, science and animals. I worked in a large baby zoo in college and would have liked to go to Vet school but life happened instead so I ended up doing about the only thing a math major can do besides teach and that was to work in IT. I was very successful, well known and respected in my industry even though I never felt very confident about it. Like others I don't feel my age and I physically feel and look better now than I did in my 30's and 40's. I have found with the weight loss and running that I am finally the more confident person that I always wanted to be.
What one sport or physical activity have you always wanted to try but haven't yet? Why haven't you tried? Growing up I had parents who encouraged us to try all sports so I played basketball and volleyball until everyone got much taller than me in HS. I snow skied and swam competitively and also water skied, kayaked and skated. I even swam in a Masters program and competitions when my daughter started swimming at 5 and swam all the way through HS. The one thing I would like to try is not a sport per se, Tai Chi. I just need to find someplace that offers it. I have put it off for years but really think it would be good for me.

Rest day for me today. Work tested my patience. Which is not why I took a rest day, its just a fact I'm sharing with you. There is a statistically significant difference between the amount of wine in my home and the amount of wine I currently need.
Glad to see you check in @HonuNui. Sorry it's tough for you, I can understand some of that and I offer some virtual hugs (or wine, if I had any).3 -

Hey all. Still slogging along. Did 4k this morning then a 2.5k bike ride to work! It was the first time I've been on a bike in about 8 years. My legs and butt are gonna be sore tomorrow bahaha7

@shanaber Thanks....it's running that's the problem. Snorkeling/work/music keep my mind engaged. Running lets my mind go where I don't want it to because it's just left-right-left-right....

On Wednesday morning I was taking the rubbish out and the area around my left ankle (Google says posterior tibial tendon) gave me a pretty sharp twinge so I taped up the area and took Wednesday and Thursday as rest days. I was going to have another rest day today, but when I got home from work the weather was just so nice and my ankle felt OK so I decided to take it easy and just run for however long I was able. I got a nice 12km done which is further than I expected and I didn't have any problems at all during the run. I iced it when I got home to be on the safe side, but I'm hoping I caught it early and the couple of days rest did the trick.
I didn't read any posts the last couple of days, so now I'm hopelessly behind. I'm just going to leave this update here and go back and catch up on the rest of the posts.8 -

@zeesparrow I wear a buff in winter. It protects my ears from the cold and wind but is lightweight enough not to get too hot.
@7lenny7 Hang gliding would be awesome! We have a lot of para gliders (at least I think that's what they're called) around here. They climb to the top of our local "mountain" - (it's a 20-30 minute walk up so more of a hill than a mountain) and jump off and just cruise around. I took this photo of one of the gliders a couple of weeks ago when I walked up. It looks so peaceful.View from the top

Awesome!! I'm in Tauranga, so it looks like we're all pretty evenly spread out over the North Island I was hoping to make it up to Auckland for the half this month, but sadly couldn't make the timing work. It would be great if we could do a NZ meet up sometime!

I’m registered for five halfs in Auckland between now and April, but I’d be keen for one in the BOP or NP mid-next year!2 -
still no running after Saturday's Marathon but that's fine. Actually, yesterday was the first day I wasn't actually LIMPING - my pinkie is starting to heal, although i don't recommend googling degloving injuries ( ) which is not quite how bad it is.
Tomorrow I head up North with a friend for a week in Northumbria doing some walking and relaxing. I'm hoping I might actually be okay to walk by then!!
Had a bad day yesterday as had a mortgage valuation come back on flat I want to buy and they offered less than I was hoping. Means the sale may fall through unless I can find some more money or persuade the vendor to drop the price (he's already said no). It's being refurbished so I need to get the valuation redone once it's finished, but it does mean I probably don't get to move before next year now.
I'm just going to enjoy my holiday and stop thinking about it for now!!!13 -

Marathons are hard. The commitment and training required really don't compare to preparing for a half. And yet, a half marathon is still a huge accomplishment! So I don't blame people for choosing shorter distances, and it's also my favorite race distance.3 -

Marathons are hard. The commitment and training required really don't compare to preparing for a half. And yet, a half marathon is still a huge accomplishment! So I don't blame people for choosing shorter distances, and it's also my favorite race distance.
I dearly want to run an Ultra, but my recent marathon experience showed me that I need to go right back to basics, get some speed and consistency up, and focus on 10k races next year. I have a mental hurdle with that, as it almost doesn't seem worth getting out of bed for a 10k race. BUT marathon training takes so much time. I really want to be able to just run 20miles whenever I feel like it, but for me that's a day out of my weekend.
I'm trying to change my mindset that 10k is fine. I have a new challenger on the block - my sister, who took up running recently, who only finished chemo/radiotherapy back in June, has just done a 5k in under 30 minutes. And she's seven years older than me. this is war.15 -

Yes, the "friend who started running after me and was faster almost right away". Sigh. I have a bunch of those. Then there are the friends who don't train except for an occasional treadmill run for a few weeks before a 5k and are still faster than me. I try to just enjoy it, and understand that everyone is different and we all have different goals. But then I wonder why I'm not faster than I am. Hmmmm.6
