@kgirlhart @hamsterwheel6 and @autumnblade75 congrats on the races and the AG finishes!!
@hamsterwheel6 you destroyed your old PR! I've heard of staggered start as in they start the race in waves but I've never heard of a race where you have a window and can start anytime you want within that window. Interesting.
@143tobe very nice! It's always great to nail a goal time!
@Squish815 fantastic race, love the photo!
My apologies if I missed anyone. I had a lot of catching up to do!4 -

Yesterday I got to run 2.41 miles to the gym, taking the slightly-extended route along the nearer lakeshore. Reading @7Lenny7’s race report reminds me once again how incredibly good I’ve got it as an urban runner - three of the four lakes that the Twin Cities Marathon (aka "The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America”) passes are within a mile of my house.
Anyhow, that run was a bear - my legs felt pretty good on Monday but I think I made my rest day a little too restful, because my quads and shins felt like they were made out of wood all day yesterday. I really need to make more of an effort to build my yoga practice because I have a bad habit of just sitting around all day if I don't have a workout planned or errands to run. Anyhow, wood legs or not, it was a beautiful day for a run and I’m glad I made it out.
I’d planned to run this morning but decided as soon as I got home from the gym that another rest day was in order, albeit a more active one. I’ve got a chiropractor appointment at noon and then the dentist, so I’ll get some biking in, plus I’ve got yard work to do before the ground freezes. The temperature is set to drop tomorrow and keep dropping, so I’m going to try and spend as much of today outside as possible.

This morning was a windy 30F with a windchill temp of 24F. There were many reports of power outages around town due to heavy snowfall with branches and power lines down, but it avoided my neighborhood. We're low enough that we only got maybe an inch on the cars - the roads were wet but not slick at all. I put on a nice, thick long sleeve top, tights, gloves and two buffs - one as a headband and one around my neck, which I wore over my nose for most of the last couple miles. I had planned to include some strides/fartleks in my run today but my left ankle was feeling a little off when I started so I decided against that and just kept it easy.
The forecast for tonight calls for a low of 22F with less wind - and no more snow.11 -
October goal: 100 miles
10/1: 5.75 miles
10/2: 6.27 miles
10/5: 1.01 miles warm up
3.14 miles Old Rip 5k
10/8: 6.27 miles
10/9: 5.63 miles
28.07/100 miles completed
I ran 5.63 miles this morning. It was a beautiful morning for running. It was not as chilly as yesterday, but still cool at 63°F with low humidity and dew point. Just a beautiful fall morning, perfect running weather. I really enjoyed the run, but I did feel kind of tired and slow this morning. I think my nose was running faster than I was.
Great race reports @rheddmobile and @7lenny7 . I always enjoy reading race reports. And love the pictures. I can't imagine running a race as large as the TCM 10 miler. My "large" race that I run is about the size of @rheddmobile's "small" race.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather
10/5/19: Old Rip 5K - PR 27:27, 1st AG
2020 races:
5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon7 -
10/1 6.5
10/2 4
10/3 3.1 and 1.5 walk
10/4 2.5 walk
10/5 Rest
10/6 6.2 Race
10/7 Rest
10/8 6.09
10/9 4 (interval speed work)
Nice and cool start at 57F today - had to start with a long sleeve and longer tights. Though about 10 min it, had to strip the long sleeve. Was actually perfect after that. Warm up mile, then some speed work, then cool down mile.
I'm still debating the 10 miler at the end of the month. I want to do it, but part of me wants a break from "training" and just run.
I could just run it and not care about time or whatever - it would be a PR regardless as I've never done a 10 miler. Have to think about it - only have a couple more days before price goes up again...
@kgirlhart I'm with you, can't imagine a race that large. The largest I've done was the recent HM which was "only" 800 or so...6 -
@rheddmobile you posted your RR in the time I was typing up mine and I missed it. After seeing the mentions I went back and found it.
Excellent race and report! 12:30 for a walk? WOW!!! I think my fast walk is in 14's. Gravel roads, catfish, live blues, brisket tacos, alligator, dancing...that sounds like a fantastic time! Congrats on the finish!
I looked up the location of that race and it reminded me that I've been meaning to ask you....Have you and your husband ever been to Jones Bar-B-Q Diner in Marianna, AR? It's about 50 minutes southwest of the that race. My son and I stopped there once about 3.5 years ago and we loved it so much we're thinking about going back this spring and buying 30 pounds of pulled pork and sauce for his graduation party. The menu is quite limited, all he serves are pulled pork sandwiches, but you can get them with or without slaw. Oh, and he's a James Beard Award winner too. When we went there on a Saturday morning, they were sold out by 10:30 AM.

@7lenny7 Great race report, I love the details and hearing about every moment, makes me feel like I was there. And I learn stuff too.
As for the staggered start, the greenway would get too congested if they let everyone start at the same time even in waves. And they don't close it to the public for only 2-300 racers.
@rheddmobile congrats on a great race as well, very cool!2 -
Hi all, managed a longer run today. Had to be quite cautious as the hamstring still isn’t right, but it felt good to get back out there. As the end of the year approaches I went back through my Garmin data to put all the miles I did from months before I joined you all on here. I started running in December last year on my 40th birthday. Got the Garmin in January at some point as a late Xmas present. And apparently have now done just under 600 miles for the year!

@7lenny7 I feel your pain with the spouse issues. Just had a row about my running myself. Last year my training plan had me doing my long runs on Sundays, which meant early morning alarms. He complained about me waking him up early on Sundays. So this time round I made it so my long runs are on Saturdays and Sundays are rest days so no alarms. Tonight he announced he wanted to make plans to go out to the fair on Friday night. I commented that Saturday night would work better for me, but that if it had to be Friday that was fine but I needed to know to shuffle my schedule around. He freaked out and claimed my 'hobby' is "ruining his *kitten* life".
Right now is a perfect example of why I don't take up boxing although as I said in response to one of the monthly questions it's something I have always wanted to try ;-)

My trick to combining running into a happy marriage is to ensure my husband has an equal number of weekends where he does his thing, whether it’s hunting or fishing or drinking beer with his mates. I also try to spread my destination events out throughout the year, and after local events I don’t hang around for prize giving - it just takes too much time. With regards to training, he plays squash 4-5 times a week so he can’t moan that I run as often. That being said, I can run during the day when he’s at work and run early on a Sunday so it doesn’t impact our weekend too much. Final tip - plenty of advance warning and reminders so he isn’t ‘surprised’ that I’m gone for the day.8

As others have said, that’s a great race report @7lenny7. I had a similar experience to you at the 18-19km mark of the Taupo Half where it all of a sudden got really hard and I though I was hitting the wall. I only realized I was running uphill when I crested the hill and things got easier again. It’s helpful to have that information/experience in the back of your mind so you can do a better performance analysis during the race.4

This morning on the way home from work I had a conversation in my head that went like this:
"I want to run today - it's been 4 days and I'm losing ground on the Monthly Running Challenge."
"But my knee..."
"The knee doesn't hurt. It'll be fine."
"Really? So why am I limping?"
"Shut up..."
Anyway, I think I probably shouldn't run until I get the limp sorted out, since I don't trust myself about whether or not it hurts. Which I would seriously question if someone else said something like that. I don't have answers, though. Mostly doesn't hurt. Limping anyway. And then sometimes it hurts. Definitely limping, then. Wish I knew what I'd done, and how to prevent it happening again. Suspect stretching might help. Can't imagine any reason it would be a BAD idea.
I'll run my Brew 5k, too. Hopefully I'll have sorted the limp out by then. I've got nearly a month. But I'm not registering for anything new until it feels better. Ha ha ha. I mean, until I've stopped limping.
I shall commence lurking.12 -
Had a day off work today so tried out some trails at a state park near me. It’s not that far but in the opposite direction I am usually going, so it’s just kind of inconvenient. It was lovely out. Still only 70F at about 10am. I had a dentist appointment this morning and had to get my race packet for the 10 miler this weekend. It’s so nice just being able to run at a time that fits my schedule without having to worry about it being stupid hot! The trails were a nice change of pace from concrete and I would really like to try mixing them in on some of my weekend or day off runs when schedule is less of an issue.
Also got Halloween decorations put up today. I really like how the house looks when its decorated for a holiday!

Sooooo
I'm treating myself to a new watch...
I currently have the vivoactive 3 with music.
I'm deciding between the vivoactive 4, so just the updated version of what I currently have, and love.
Or the forerunner 645 (music)
Both are currently the same price.
I got the watch for the GPS and music. I like the HR and do notice vo2 max but don't live by it. I use the step counter and smart watch features.as in I love my current watch so like the idea of just updating it.
But I think I'd like the running metric info, at least I'd find them interesting.

@Avidkeo My Garmin VivoSmart 4 is just under two years old and it went from only having to be charged about once per week, to a few weeks ago it wouldn't even last the day. Like @T1DCarnivoreRunner I just figured it had run it's life span, but I was pretty annoyed it only worked for under 2 years.
@shanaber Have a great trip. I'm hoping for the best outcome for Hobbes
@rheddmobile Fantastic race report. Congratulations on the AG win and 4th overall female! That's interesting about no one wanting to line up at the front. It looks like you both had a wonderful day
@7Lenny7 Love the detailed race report and pictures! It sounds like you had a such a great experience from start to finish - except maybe the porta-pot stop at the end

I was stuck at work later than intended, so scrapped my plans to go to either run group or yoga tonight. I really needed to make a real dinner and get to bed on time. I got home, put some rice in the cooker, went out for quick run, and now am waiting for the rest of my dinner to finish up. I'm trying a new sheet pan beef and broccoli recipe. Hopefully it's good because it's easy to make on a weeknight.

@Avidkeo I really want the FR645. I don't know much about the VA4 so can't comment on that. I use a FR235 now and I love it, but want the added functionality of the music on the watch so I don't have to carry my phone if I don't want to
I love that aspect of my current watch which is why I got it.
I gather that to get the full metrics of the 645 you need an extra strap. On further reading I see the only real difference is touch screen vs buttons.1 -

Reading the forums, it seems a lot of watches have the same issue following an update a week or so ago. Wonder if it is actually relates1 -

Another cool 55F run at 5 this morning. Now this is Fall weather!
@rheddmobile – Congratulations on your female master award! I enjoyed reading your race report but you are not slow at all! I couldn’t run a mile at 7:33 if Satan himself was chasing me!
Great race report @7lenny7! Glad you had such a good race and took the time to recognize the beauty in the day and in your ability. That cathedral is beautiful! @katharmonic – I also thought of @MobyCarp and his race reports when I was reading.
Very nice job, great start to October!3 -
@rheddmobile Congratulations to you and your husband on your 5K! Congratulations also on the awesome mile PR. Sounds like that was a fantastic day all around!
@7lenny7 Great race report. Glad you enjoyed it so much! Congratulations on making your goal time.2 -

Hah, minor details! I finished in 2:03:31, slower than my arbitrary two hour target, but ahead of the marathon winners (who started 40 minutes after I did), which was the only thing I’d really wanted to avoid.
1000 people behind you! You rocked it!
Also, man @7lenny7 is tall! No wonder he is so fast, he probably only need 1/2 the number of strides of a normal person to finish a race.
Well, there were almost 10,000 people ahead of me, but I'll take it. I really was worried about being caught by the elite marathoners, though, so I'm super glad that didn't happen. And yeah, I'm on the shorter side (5'2") but @7lenny7 is definitely a tall dude. When I'm feeling insecure about being slow, which happens less and less often, I remind myself that I've got to take a lot more steps to go the same distance as these tall types!
Obviously the "7"'s in @7lenny7 are because he is 7 foot, 7 inches tall.
@PastorVincent ha, not quite. I'm just 6' 5". I'm not the tallest in the family though, my youngest son is 6' 7".
Sure you are!
Great job on your race even if it was fewer paces for you than most people3 -

For running, I found the touch screen extremely annoying on my Apple Watch (one of the reasons I got rid of it actually) - When the watch is wet or my hands are sweaty, it does not work. My Garmin 935's buttons always work. Just something to think about.3 -
No run today, had to trade it for my 6month visit to the dentist... fun times. AND because I do SUCH A GOOD JOB (they actually say I do) keeping up with my brushing and flossing I get to get drilled for ANOTHER cavity. I will be going back in for that near Christmas. yay!
I did make it to the gym for my anti-trex plan though. Doing good! 2 months in and only missed one day due to issues at work, not because I skipped it.10 -
8.05 miles today. It felt good as it was cooler and I kept it mostly at an easy pace.

Oops...
Got a mates rates price I couldn't say no to.

As @PastorVincent would say, I'm not a doctor, but my personal experience with knees that hurt while running and on and off, gradually worsening to the point of having to walk without bending it, turned out to be caused by severely contractured calf and quad muscles. Took plenty of physiotherapy, massage and stretching along with a back-to-basics approach to running. Now my knees start to grumble at me when I'm due another massage or haven't been stretching enough, feels like someone put a metal vice round them and slowly tightens it. I'm currently experimenting with swimming as cross training, seems to be helping loosen the muscles up.
Try and stretch as much as possible but not if it really hurts!1 -
I’ve just completed my first track session in eight-plus years. I think I’ll be feeling it tomorrow!8
