October 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

I finally caught up on the thread...was going back and forth from present to days ago. So, if my comments are discombobulated, that's why. You guys are doing great and are so inspiring. Now, I feel I can join in the Oct. challenge. I am in for 55 miles this month. I made my 50 in Sept and, if I follow my plan, should have closer to 60 in Oct. I'm giving myself a little wiggle room for life happening. I'm off to a pretty good start with 9.45 miles so far this month, and, I didn't do my long run this week. I just wasn't in the mood today, so did a walk instead. I don't have to be anywhere until 1:30 tomorrow afternoon, so plan on doing my 4 miles in the morning.
Last Saturday, I was helping my dad round up some cattle to haul from one field to another. I found myself sprinting up a fairly large hill to head off a group of scared calves. I actually beat them to the top and I wasn't gasping for breath. My training is paying off in practical ways.
I have been thinking lately about @MobyCarp saying that you can't outrun your fork and the article someone mentioned about running not being the best method to lose weight. I think I read part of that same article. The issue seems to be that people think if they run, they can eat anything they want and lose, because, well, they are exercising really hard. But, I have found that the more I am getting in shape, the fewer calories I am burning for the same perceived amount of exercise. I know that is good, but it is also frustrating when trying to lose. So, my plan to get this last 10 pounds of weight off, and keep it off this time, is to remember that the fork always wins.9 -
Had a 'is that a pain in my foot kinda day?' Anyway did 7km. I am now having two days off to Wednesday to give the foot a rest.
Goal for October:

2. 80km.........20km
3. 8km long...x
4. PB 5km......Done 5 Oct

Thanks@PastorVincent, @Tramboman, @polskagirl01 and @hamsterwheel! And congrats on your races and AG awards @hamsterwheel6 and @autumnblade75 and glad the knee is feeling ok. Congrats on your race and masters win too @rheddmobile. I'm looking forward to the race report.
Since I raced yesterday I took today as a rest day. It has been nice, but I kind of missed my long run. I did some nice yoga this afternoon though. I am hoping for some fall weather for my runs this week. Maybe we will actually get it.4 -

I’ll take it though. I’m super happy and sorry to brag but never in a million years did I think I could do this!
Well done!

So y'all like to poke fun when I say stuff like "I am not a doctor..." so you might find this story interesting. There is a guy I was talking tonight (my son's girlfriend's step-father) and he was complaining that he went for a run today and got a blister. So I told him "get new socks," and a few other tips. Then I said to him "I am not a doctor, but what I would do..."
Here is the thing... HE IS A DOCTOR. And yes I knew that, and no that did not stop me from advising him, as he asked me. Who knows, maybe I taught him something (not likely LOL)14 -

6.64 miles today, slow and struggled way too much with hypoglycemia.
Also, is anyone tech savvy? I use Amazon Music and have Smartlock setup so that when my Aftershokz are connected, the phone stays unlocked. I would like to tell Alexa when to play next or previous song, or to play a particular song on request. I can do next song with Aftershokz butons (play/pause, next, volume up/down buttons... but no previous). However, I can only do that if I unlock my phone first. The whole point of Smartlock is so I don't need to do that, but it still makes me swipe to unlock. I don't need my pattern, but still have to swipe. And that means I just really can't use it without stopping, taking off my phone holster, removing the phone... it just isn't an option to keep moving while doing this. After all, I want to tell Alexa to play a specific song for motivation as I'm coming into the finish chute and that is the worst time to stop and take my phone out to fiddle with music! So anyway, does anyone know of a way to get around this requirement that I swipe my phone screen to unlock it before I can talk to Alexa?
FTR, I setup so that I can say "OK Google" and it will turn on the phone screen, but haven't figured out how to get the Google commands to translate to Amazon Music beyond "Play Amazon Music" And if I activate OK Google and say anything else (or nothing), it automatically just pauses Amazon Music and doesn't start up again until I tell it to... but that is the ONLY command I can get to work through Android / Google.
Any ideas on how to use voice commands to swipe my phone without actually taking it out and swiping the screen?2 -
Had my big 5K yesterday. In many ways I've been looking forward to this race more than I had been my half. Probably because I knew there would be actual American donuts involved. So, running just might seriously save my marriage. My husband REALLY dislikes traveling about a 10 mile radius away from our house, but after we did the half marathon together, he did agree to come with me to Frankfurt and bring our two boys (7 and 10). Honestly, a small miracle. I checked the weather in the morning and it gloriously said no rain until 3pm. My race was at 12:15 and the weather app was showing clear skies. I woke up feeling pretty good despite cracking my shin HARD on the corner of my son's wooden bed frame the night before. I wanted to cry. This kind of stuff happens to be all the time. I should be used to it, but no. I woke up at 5, did a 5 minute warm up on the treadmill, a 5 minute warm up using my step bench. Did 20 minutes of standing yoga poses. Did a little bit of massage, walked my dog. I felt relaxed and not nearly as nervous as I had been for the half. My plan was to run my 5k on just keto coffee and a single Reece's Peanut Butter cup as I normally do for a 5K when I want to go fast, but since I had promised my kids Dunkin Donuts if they went (yes, it was a bribe), I just could not resist the maple donut staring me down 30 minutes before the race. I knew the sugar rush could help give me a boost since my base diet is low carb, but I also knew I was in trouble if it just sat like a brick in my belly during the run. I risked it. Dang it was good and definitely worth the risk. Oh, when we arrived it was pouring rain. So my conservative goal was to run the race between 28 and 29 minutes which would make it between 1 and 2 minutes faster than my PR just 6 days before. I knew it was possible because it was a flat course. Got my official time. 26:45. 29th place out of 185 women entrants. 4th place for my age group. Turns out this woman and I kept passing each other the whole race and she finished 3 seconds ahead of me took 3rd in our age group. Had I known I even had a chance at placing, it would have been ON 😂. Now that I know I can run this fast, I'm BRINGING IT next year. 😎
I know I left out a lot of details from the actual race, but what can I say, it was pretty much ideal. My "Dream" goal was to run it at an 8:40 pace since I had just run my previous 5k at a 9:40 pace and that was on hills. I was pretty sure I could physically do it. But it sounded like such a fantastical goal...and so I didn't verbalize this wish. Still, it was locked in my heart and in my head and I knew what it would take to meet it. I was going to try. Well I did it. According to my watch that was my exact pace, but my watch was 10 seconds slower than my official time, so actually I did ever so slightly better.
Anyways, I was on such a high yesterday. Exhausted because the run depleted me, but happy and excited and proud of what I accomplished. I seriously don't know who this "runner" is that I've become. My running only resumed in Spring after two years off, and before those two years my average 5K was around 34 minutes. This week I just smashed all my PR's. I'm so happy and amazed by my progress this year. I honestly never thought I would be able to achieve all I have. I beat my fastest 5K time by 3 whole minutes. A few days before that I beat my fastest half marathon time by 9 minutes. My head is spinning. I knew I was holding back my effort during my training, but I had no idea that I could pull that out of my pocket on race day. Losing weight to run faster is really helping. And I love that my weight loss just feels so different because before I was doing it, "not to be fat" anymore. But now that I'm doing it to increase my athletic performance, it just feels better. I was determined before, but now I want to be the best athlete I can be. I don't have any planned races until February. Looking forward to rethinking my runs now that I know my abilities.

Just had a quick look at the google doc for the miles for Kevin (MobyCarp) runs.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1u1kakszOV9CNZ6ONIzsQjF2Oq8lgpOZh/edit#gid=1527975205
As it stands, from what I can make out (I suck at spreadsheets lol) if we moved the start back an hour and start the 24 hour period at 6pm EST, we would still have 8 hours to cover to make the full 24. Anyone able to take any of those slots?

I’m late to the party. I will try my best to catch up on the 14 pages I’ve missed.
I’m in for 60 this month. I go on call the last week of the month, but I am going to try my best to get in all of my runs, even if on the dreadmill at the gym with my phone next to me.
I am trying a new plan this month of working out in the morning vs after work. I find that I work late or hubby has other plans at night that prevent me from doing what I need to do. I got up early today to do my strength training, so we’ll see how an early run goes for me tomorrow.
10/1: 2
10/5: 3
10/6: 3
10/7: ST

Had a staggered start as it was on the greenway and it could get really crowded if everybody started at the same time. Staggered meaning you could start any time between 8-9. The marathoners and half marathoners started earlier.
So got there, got my timing chip, and I wanted to get it done so I started couple min after 8. It was overcast and a cool 63 at start time. Off I went and felt pretty good, so I pushed the pace a little, with the intent of slowing up at the gradual uphill that I knew was coming...First mile was around 9:35 which kind of fast for me! I was still feeling good so just kept that pace through out. Walked briefly thorough water station cause I can’t run and drink either. I really wanted to beat my previous PR of 102.09, and by the time I was headed back after half way point, I knew I had a good chance of doing it...I just told myself to keep at it... the last half mile has a steep hill that I was planning on walking then running hard to the finish the last .20. However, I just said wth, and ran it and hard to the finish.
My husband was waiting and I smiled at him knowing I had beaten my goal..
They weren’t going to post final results until the last person came in which could be another couple hours so we decided to go home.
Finally got a text with results...final time for me: 57:47.2!! 9:19 Average Pace.. Good enough for 1 in AG (out of 4 but hey it counts) and 8 out of 30 Female, and 16 - 44 Overall.. Gotta love smaller races! Lol!
I’ll take it though. I’m super happy and sorry to brag but never in a million years did I think I could do this!
Had a Italian buffet lunch to celebrate and now just Netflixing...
That's congrats on the AG win and PR! It definitely counts!1 -
Here's my progress for the month. Back at it and feeling good. Today I cycled to the track for a "ladder" workout (400/800/1600x2/800/400 @5k pace, with 400m recovery in-between). There were a bunch of other runners out today, until it started rain/hailing and they all left except me. It was kinda cold & slippery biking home, but nothing a hot shower couldn't fix
October goal 100 miles
Upcoming races:
Oct. 19 - CityTrail trail 5k (#1 of 6 in the series)
Oct. 26 - Botanical Autumn 5k
Oct. 27 - Lublin Half Marathon7 -

I started a thread an taged you . I'm running short on time this morning and on mobile so I don't have the link to the new thread. It's in the group challenges thread. Sorry I'm lazy...2 -
@143tobe CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Those are excellent results! Good for you for making your fantasy goal pace!1
-
@hamsterwheel6 very well done on your 10K PR, and AG win!!!! You should be proud of yourself!!
@143tobe Congrats on your 5K PR!!!! That is an awesome time, especially since you ran your previous PR just 6 days prior!
7.1 miles this morning This was a tale of two runs. 63F is what I have been dreaming about for 5 or 6 months. But maybe all the excitement for fall weather, or the 3 hours of sleep, or awkwardness of running with a shirt on for the first time since April. But whatever it was, it caused me to feel tight, out of breath, and uncoordinated; like I felt when I ran 4 or 5 years ago. That feeling lasted about 3 miles. Then I started feeling better, and by the time I hit 4 miles, I was feeling myself again. Breathing felt good, felt smoother, and pace picked up, and it felt much easier.
Anyhow, the weather felt glorious! Welcome Fall!!!!! Hope you stick around for more than 1 week.

I've finally caught up on the 170ish posts I was behind on! First up, very well done to @143tobe (x2!), @kgirlhart , @katharmonic , @rheddmobile , @hamsterwheel6 and anyone else I may have missed! Some fantastic runs there.
Thank you @quilteryoyo for the well wishes - I was feeling much better by Saturday morning and managed to run on the Sunday which leads me to....
My first race report! I'll try and keep is brief-ish.
Being ill the week before any race sucks, even more so when the predicted weather for the day of the race is torrential rain. I think I spent most of last week worrying I wouldn't be well enough to run or worrying the rain would be so bad I'd quit halfway through. Thankfully I felt mostly better by Friday night so knew I'd at last make it to the start, just had to keep my fingers crossed that the rain wouldn't be as bad as predicted.
Woke up on Sunday to the sound of rain on our bedroom window and a horrible nervous feeling that made it difficult to finish my breakfast. However I got ready and headed to the race to meet my friends and collect our race numbers. The rain stopped about an hour before the race started and then, by some miracle, stayed away for the rest of the morning! Yes, it did mean some bits were muddier than normal but that's better than endless rain.
We started at exactly half 9. The route was great - quite varied and the promised hill was nowhere near as scary as I'd been led to believe. The support from locals and family members was absolutely amazing - honestly don't think I'd have done half as well without it! I was completely fine until just after mile 11 when I started to flag. Just after the 12 mile marker I had to stop a few times to walk a few steps before forcing myself to run again. As we entered the last 500m I spotted my husband who took loads of pictures for us and then on the other side I spotted my Mum, sister and 6 month old nephew (I'll add a pic of the moment I spotted them) ! THIS got me through those last few 100 meters and me and my 2 friends crossed the line together. Our aim was 2.5 hours - we made it in 2:15:38!
Honestly, I'm so proud of us as we did it so much quicker than expected and helped push each other through the 13ish miles! I also enjoyed it waaaaay more than I expected and I aim to run at least 1 or 2 more half's next year! Also nowhere near as achy as expected today, although my legs are a bit stiff. I'm off to get some housework done though, so that should help!
Thanks to everyone here who encouraged and gave me advice! Every bit of it helped!
Sorry - don't know how to add in a spoiler - I'm the excited looking one in the black!

@143tobe Congratulations! It sounds like things are working out fantastically for you right now.
My 5K and marathon PR's were also 1 week apart and I guess I was really fit at the time. Maybe weather played a role? Anyway, I wish I could get back to those speeds.
@hamsterwheel6 Congratulations on a super fast time and winning you AG!
@Squish815 Great job! And yes, after a race, I often suddenly look for more to sign up for. I submit credit card bill as evidence... but I don't regret doing so in the end.
@polskagirl01 Ugh, hail is the worst! Be safe.
@Scott6255 It cooled down here too and I am excited. Even with a bit of cooling already, I was running in 80'sF on Sat. This weekend in Chicago, I am hoping for 50's-60's and I seriously hope that cooler temp gives me a benefit for speed.5 -
Thanks @LoveyChar !
And thank you @mbaker566 - I knew it was hiding somewhere! Unfortunately I'm about a minute too late to edit.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Thank you! Done a little research but races round my way are currently a bit thin on the ground as winter is coming up. I'll find something though I'm sure!1 -

@Squish815 Great job on your Half Marathon, and CRUSHING your goal time!!0

So many great race reports this weekend! Congratulations @143tobe @hamsterwheel6 @Squish815 and all the rest of the racers!
I ran 3.5 miles Saturday and another 4 Sunday. Today is a rest day, but as I slept well, I took the dogs for a 45 minute walk this morning before work. That was almost more tiring than a run!4 -
@PastorVincent @polskagirl01 @T1DCarnivoreRunner @scott6255, @Squish815 , @tramboman
Thank you all! I'm pretty happy still and yes already looking to sign up for another lol.
@143tobe , @squish815 Congrats on great reaces and love the photos as well.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner When you figure out how to control Amazon Music let me know as I have the same issue!
@scott6255 I know, I'm hoping Fall sticks around as well..makes for much better runs - as my last race proved!
Rest day today.
Did receive the race pics: The pic on the bridge is about less than half mile to the finish, and I knew then I would beat my goal so I was super excited, LOL!9 -

I'm also doing a race (marathon) in eastern time zone (WV) starting at 7am, so that is why I filled up 5 hours. I'm sure many of us are doing a morning race that day on the same day as the New York Marathon.1
