Hey since @MegaMooseEsq run a few loops, did she get a finishers' medal and such?
I say she at least earned the socks!
Great race reports, I really enjoyed reading them.
I'm intentionally not running to give my quad a chance to heal, even though it currently feels fine. I've got that @MobyCarp "one extra day than you think you need" in my head and it feels right. I'm keeping busy, though. Hosted 5 guys from a rock band for 2 nights at our house and organized a community event (think American grill/picnic with a concert) and personally made over 100 pumpkin spice lattes. Is it cultural appropriation if I'm not the stereotypical "white girl" and don't even drink coffee, if I served PSL's while wearing a shirt that says "Blessed"? Can you appropriate your own alleged culture? Is that an appropriate topic for this forum? Hmmm The coffee was a big hit, though, and the event went really well. I'm mostly done cleaning now and am left with my very own personal pumpkin spice dispenser. So I could technically start sprinkling it on everything. Is that what it's for?because I have no current running pictures.I'm rambling. Great running, everyone!
Also it was Teacher's Day this week and my preschool boss where I teach once a week gave me this giant cranberry chocolate bar.12 -
Thank you, wonderful people, for the kind words for my race and my report. I love the support here!
My body seems to be recovering quickly. On Monday it hurt to walk all day. Yesterday it only hurt for short time after being stationary, or when going down stairs. Today, while it doesn't feel completely normal, doesn't hurt to walk at all.
No pain left at my blister site. While it was a big blister, and drained a red-tinged fluid, all the skin is in tact and I can't tell it's even there anymore. Its like the skin is healing back in place but I'm sure it will eventually dry up and come off.
The only pain left is a slight soreness in my right shin muscle (tibialis anterior) and a tightness in my right calf, which seems to always be there. And the ball of my right foot is still tender from the 44,000 steps it took Sunday. I wish I knew why 90% of any niggles or injuries happen in my right leg or foot. My left side seems bulletproof.
I'm going to try a 4 mile run tonight. Using @MobyCarp 's wisdom I should skip it. He always said that the first day you feel good enough to run after an injury or recovery, wait one more day before actually doing it. But, I have a dog that needs to get in shape for hunting season so we're going out, easy. If it get's to be to much I'll hop on the bike to finish his run.
@shanaber give Hobbes a good belly rub for me and tell him to recover well.
@Avidkeo cheers to running 10k!
@Lazy_Bones_85 welcome back! Those small laps sounds terrible but the scenery looks wonderful.10 -
Eight years ago I ran my first marathon. Six years ago I overextended my hip, almost popping it out of socket while playing soccer. This year I moved from sea level to 6,000+ ft elevation. I recently started running again in hopes of completing a 15k or half marathon this spring back at sea level - hopefully beating my previous records.
All of that to say I am a former runner, trying to get back in shape and going to commit to 15 miles in the second half of this month. At this point, I am not focused on my pace. I am focused on continuously moving for my entire goal distance.17 -
Lazy_Bones_85 wrote: »I don't think I logged anything for the month since I've been away. We took a Rhine River cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland and it was fantastic. The only drawback was having to run on a 12-laps-to-a-mile running track on the sundeck. My right leg is sore from the constant pressure of turning. But the views were spectacular. I'll post some pictures in another post from my phone after this post.

@Lazy_Bones_85 - Awesome pictures but 306 laps wow! I just looked back to see that I haven’t had to resort to the Dreadmill since September 20 & it has been marvelous running all my miles outside. Even though you were outside with inspiring scenery it still reminds me of the mill!3

@Lazy_Bones_85 - That is one of our planned future trips but going all the way to Budapest! Your pictures make me want to go now!! So beautiful. I cannot imagine running all of those little laps though. I think I would just take a break from running, well maybe...
@polskagirl01 - I love that you were hosting a band (anyone we might know?) and serving PSLs! I am not a fan but I know people here absolutely love them... Also I think pretty much any topic would be appropriate in this group. That candy bar looks delicious, especially since it is dark chocolate!
@MaddawgMadsen - Welcome to the group! You might consider the C25K (couch to 5k) app or something similar. Lots of folks here have used it successfully to get started or come back to running.3 -
@shanaber Hugs for you and belly rubs for Hobbes!
@MaddawgMadsen Welcome!
@Lazy_Bones_85 Loved your pictures. I'm not sure I could do laps like that; it might drive me even more crazy.

Today's run was relatively uneventful, around the neighborhood a couple times with the dogs. I took Kira a little different route than usual which kept her more interested for a while, but she stops on a dime when she smells something interesting. lol
I didn't mention it yesterday because I was hoping it wouldn't linger, but my lower back is not happy with me. It was a little tight when I woke up the last couple days, and felt better during and after my run yesterday. Not today though. I threw my back out years ago by twisting with weight and can throw it out now by sneezing wrong. Light activity and easy movement seems to be the best way to get it to relax. That said, I should probably do some easy yoga tonight.8 -

I had a terrific 6 mile run this morning. It was so nice. We had a cold front come through. It started out at 53°F and was actually 48°F when I got home. I was pretty comfortable in shorts and a tank top, but I did wear gloves and they helped a lot. My arms were a little chilly, but that didn't bother me like having cold hands does. It was actually nice to be cool instead of hot for a change and I think wearing sleeves would have been too much. But my hands were still a little cold even with gloves. They didn't hurt as much as they did last week when it was cold though and I didn't have any trouble unlocking the door or anything when I got home so it was good. I did feel a little silly wearing shorts and a tank top with gloves, but now that I'm in my 50's I'm more concerned with comfort than how I look. I enjoyed the run so much today. It was clear and there was a bit of a breeze, but not too much. Which was good because it was a north wind. The moon was out so it wasn't totally dark. It was one of those runs where I just wanted to keep going. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be even cooler than today so I may wear sleeves and definitely will wear the gloves.
@shanaber Poor Hobbes looks sad. I hope you get good results and that he's up and running again soon.
@7lenny7 and @MegaMooseEsq Great race photo!
@Lazy_Bones_85 Wow! I'm not sure I could have done all those laps, but what beautiful pictures!

5 miles in the pouring rain this morning. My clothes, hair and everything else were dripping water when I finished. I’m not complaining though because we really really need some rain around here. Feeling tired now though. I had bootcamp after work yesterday and it involved a lot of running including sprints. Half way to goal!
Congratulations on your retirement @BeverlyW1108!
@shanaber – glad Hobbes did great with the surgery. I hope he isn’t feeling too bad today. Give him an extra ear scratching for me!
How was running in the rain? We had rain here yesterday too but I ran indoors. I wasn't sure what gear I would need or how to decrease my misery....

@kgirlhart -Thanks, I hope so too. Me too on the comfort over looks. And that would totally be me with the gloves
@shanaber Hugs to Hobbes I did think that maybe something is broken. I guess I don't want it to be true. I'll have it checked out tomorrow I guess. It's not as swollen, but still painful at times. It's on the left food on the outside half.
@Lazy_Bones_85 Lovely pics! And all those laps!
@MaddawgMadsen Welcome!
@7lenny7 probably should give it one more day as @MobyCarp would say. But I do understand how hard that is, as I would (and do) go right back at it. Why don't we listen? LOL
@polskagirl01 You are listening! Love coffee myself, but not PSL stuff..haha
@Avidkeo Good job on the 10K, good time too
@zeesparrow Take care of the back!
No run. Day 2 foot still hurts, though not quite as swollen; I'm thinking I probably should get it checked to rule out a fracture. Sigh. That would not be good. I'm travelling in 2 weeks! Not to mention no running - which makes me a grumpy hamster.8 -
@Lazy_Bones_85 Very cool pics! And 306 laps, turning right all the time?! That's commitment! But couldn't you have changed directions each mile or so to help even things out? Maybe it was a one-way only track, I don't know, I've never been on a ship with a track.
Maybe I'll see you in Peachtree City on Saturday?
@zeesparrow I feel your back pain! I was working most of the day yesterday on the ground, and tweaked my lower back somehow. Was very sore last night, and this morning. I was dreading taking that first step on my run, but somehow running is the only time it DOESN'T hurt. Weird. Hope you feel better soon!!!

Just realised we're half way through the month and I probably haven't actually reported any of my mileage or anything apart from accounts of the weird and wonderful stuff my brain does on long runs. Training is actually going great, I've started swimming for an hour on Tuesdays instead of walking for cross training and (hope I don't jinx it by saying it!) my legs seem to be really happy about that, they're holding up very well. Could be the regular physio/massage sessions too of course... I only have one long run left (12 miles, gulp!) this Saturday morning, which I have promised myself will be done at a very easy pace. My daughter is 14 on Monday, so Saturday afternoon/night/Sunday is her party. I'm taking her and 5 friends to the mall for the afternoon Saturday, then they're sleeping over that night. I'm kinda hoping I'll be so tired I'll be past caring much what time they go to sleep (or not) and will sleep through the giggles! I will also be not feeling guilty about eating pizza and birthday cake with them after all those miles :-)
Those of you who know about teenaged girls (especially ones with anxiety and stuff) can probably understand when I say this is a tough period, with lots of meltdowns and the like. Last night was a tough one, she's struggling with school and life and growing up and I'm struggling with not being able to solve everything for her and her not wanting me to intervene.
So there was a shitload of frustration and emotion floating about this morning when I set out for what was supposed to be 8km at race pace. It ended up being waaaaaay to fast. Like 5k pace on a good day, definitely not HM pace. Oh well, should make race pace feel much easier. Think my legs may be a bit sore tomorrow.
Oh yeah, sorry, mileage:
October goal: 120km, stretch goal 134km. Run so far: 78.72km
I usually start driving everyone nuts at this point with all my irrational fears about my race, but I'm actually feeling quite good and confident about this one at the moment, even if I do know I might struggle to go as fast as I need to for as long as I need to. But my legs feel good and I feel ready for it, whereas before my last (and only) HM I was swallowing ibuprofen and constantly slapping arnica on my legs. Of course once I start tapering (and I'm going to try quite a lengthy taper) I'll probably start driving everyone nuts. I apologise in advance!
10 -
Thanks all for the thoughts for Hobbes the Vizsla! He is doing ok today but is definitely sore. He is resting and enjoyed a pup cup from Starbucks 😊
@Camaramandy648 - Running in the rain IMO is awesome as long as it isn't a complete downpour or really windy. Depending on the temperature I might just wear a long sleeve shirt and a hat as normal. Other times I have worn a light waterproof running jacket.
@zeesparrow and @Scott6255 - I have also had lower back issues (not for a long while now though) and my trainer said that it doesn't hurt when running because you are engaging your core and that helps support those back muscles.
@eleanorhawkins - Definitely know about those teenage daughter issues. Wish I had been a runner when mine was going through that time. Those are such difficult years for everyone involved! Years later my daughter actually wrote me a letter apologizing for how bad she felt she had treated me during that period. It's funny because at the time I don't think I was hurt or upset but just considered it part of growing up. I did feel bad though, like you, that I couldn't help her more. Just hang in there and keep letting her know you love her and are there for her!
I got out for my run just a little late this morning... 8x400m at 5k pace was on the plan. I had to go too far initially for my warm up as I needed to run to the bathroom at the beginning of the trail. Then I started out too slow on the 1st interval and then so fast on all the rest. A couple of times I couldn't even finish the full 400m... I just seemed to have no feel for the pace. It was also SO Hot and Dry and Windy! We are having Santa Ana (dry and hot) winds and it is supposed to be over 90 today and tomorrow. Actually it is already over 90 today! Seems we may not get much of a fall again this year 😡

Did my longest training run (and longest distance ever) today, 12 miles!! While it was hard, I feel like it showed me that even if things aren't great on race day, I can definitely finish it and be ok.
My husband and I waited for some weather to blow through and started about 11am. Mistake 1. I had a snack (Clif Bar) before heading out but we ran a little over 2 hours, which means we ran through the time I would usually eat lunch. My blood sugar is tenuous in general and has been most of my life. I manage this by eating about 6 times a day in my day to day life. Just constantly eating. When running I eat at about 50-55 minutes in then every 20-30 minutes for the rest of the run. Mistake 2. Didn't bring enough blocks. My blood sugar started tanking around mile 4. I could feel it coming so I ate a couple of my blocks, that I would usually have eaten in about 1-1.5 miles. Felt better, but then I needed my others earlier than scheduled. I even took one of my husband's (with permission) because he felt like he could do without and I definitely couldn't. Mistake 3. Should have worn an actual hat instead of a visor and maybe a thicker shirt or some sleeves. I was cold the entire time, and not in a refreshing cool air way. More like I started shivering if we had to stop to wait for a traffic light. Temp wise I was probably dressed ok, but it was really damp and windy and it felt soooo much colder.
So, yeah, it kind of sucked but I did it. Chances are fewer of these things will go wrong on the actual race day.

Rest day yesterday and easy treadmill miles today. I went to a yoga class after the run and it felt pretty good, but made me realize I'm pretty tight. I'll have to work on stretching the next couple of days.
Tomorrow I fly to Kansas City for the beginnings of the big I-35 Challenge weekend. I have like 3 different outfits for each race packed, and I am still worried about not having the right thing. The forecast is improving, but there is still rain predicted for early morning on Saturday - really hoping this goes away but I did order some disposable rain ponchos for standing around before the start at least.

I got out to the Greenway for a 4 mile walk and a mile run yesterday - my husband’s legs are still not recovered from the 31 miles we did at the timed race so I ran a loop around the lake while he walked. My legs felt great but tired, except for my knee which feels a bit spongier than usual. My toe, though - it still feels and looks a little bit like someone mashed it with a hammer. Just the middle toe on the left foot, all around the toenail is bruised and the tip blistered. This despite wearing toe caps, if I hadn’t had the toe caps I think my toes would just be hamburger. I think it’s mostly because my feet were soaking wet and muddy the whole time, which made my shoes stretch and not fit quite right, and my skin softer than usual, despite being coated with body glide.
I like to paint my toenails nicely before a race - it’s silly but it makes me feel more prepared. These toes were beautifully manicured with three neat layers of enamel when I started!
This is right after the race, shortly afterwards the tip blew up like a balloon and turned purple!6 -
Shadow got a distance PR when I dragged her around for 3.57 miles. I dropped her off and ended at 4.3 miles.

Me too! While a lot of people will tell you "if you can run 10 miles you can run a HM" I really regretted not having gone further in training. I think the knowledge that you can go the distance is very good for calming nerves!5 -

I will blow your mind and tell you that most people that can run a half can run a full. I do not endorse that method of training, but I personally know more than one person that has done just that. At least one that made a wrong turn on a half race and ended up on the full course, which he finished (but still got a DNF for the half)
I personally ran my first 10-mile race after having a max "long-run" of 4 miles.
IMO, though, most runners talk about hitting a "wall" at say mile 20 in the marathon or mile 10 in the half, and guess about where their long runs ended about? It might be a coincidence, but I am not so sure it is.
There are good reasons to run less in training. In training you are running, by design, if you follow the plan, every long run on tired legs. You are, by design, pushing the edges of your limits. And the more you do that, the more likely you are to get hurt. By shortening the max long run, you significantly reduce that chance.
Still I am NOT a doctor, nor a coach or a trainer, just some old guy on the internet sipping coffee and jamming keys on a keyboard. So YMMV, and etc.

Yes! This is one place where endurance style running really shows its benefits. You build a mental toughness that will see you through much hardship in life in general. Well done.1 -
martaindale wrote: »So, yeah, it kind of sucked but I did it. Chances are fewer of these things will go wrong on the actual race day.
This is why you do long runs in training before a race. Well, in addition to the physical conditioning. You now know somethings that COULD go wrong on race day, and you can plan for them.
