I don't think I logged anything for the month since I've been away. We took a Rhine River cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland and it was fantastic. The only drawback was having to run on a 12-laps-to-a-mile running track on the sundeck. My right leg is sore from the constant pressure of turning. But the views were spectacular. I'll post some pictures in another post from my phone after this post.
What a wonderful vacation! Love the pictures! Way to go on running all those laps!

@Lazy_Bones_85 - Awesome pictures but 306 laps wow! I just looked back to see that I haven’t had to resort to the Dreadmill since September 20 & it has been marvelous running all my miles outside. Even though you were outside with inspiring scenery it still reminds me of the mill!

@Lazy_Bones_85 - That is one of our planned future trips but going all the way to Budapest! Your pictures make me want to go now!! So beautiful. I cannot imagine running all of those little laps though. I think I would just take a break from running, well maybe...
@polskagirl01 - I love that you were hosting a band (anyone we might know?) and serving PSLs! I am not a fan but I know people here absolutely love them... Also I think pretty much any topic would be appropriate in this group. That candy bar looks delicious, especially since it is dark chocolate!
@MaddawgMadsen - Welcome to the group! You might consider the C25K (couch to 5k) app or something similar. Lots of folks here have used it successfully to get started or come back to running.

    October Goal 100 miles

    October 2 – 5.18 miles
    October 4 – 10.7 miles
    October 7 – 4.01 miles
    October 8 – 4.51 miles
    October 9 – 5 miles
    October 11 – 12 miles
    October 14 – 5.16 miles
    October 16 – 5.01 miles
    Total – 51.57 miles

5 miles in the pouring rain this morning. My clothes, hair and everything else were dripping water when I finished. I’m not complaining though because we really really need some rain around here. Feeling tired now though. I had bootcamp after work yesterday and it involved a lot of running including sprints. Half way to goal!

    Congratulations on your retirement @BeverlyW1108!

@shanaber – glad Hobbes did great with the surgery. I hope he isn’t feeling too bad today. Give him an extra ear scratching for me!

How was running in the rain? We had rain here yesterday too but I ran indoors. I wasn't sure what gear I would need or how to decrease my misery....

@Lazy_Bones_85 Very cool pics! And 306 laps, turning right all the time?! That's commitment! But couldn't you have changed directions each mile or so to help even things out? Maybe it was a one-way only track, I don't know, I've never been on a ship with a track.
Maybe I'll see you in Peachtree City on Saturday? :#

@zeesparrow I feel your back pain! I was working most of the day yesterday on the ground, and tweaked my lower back somehow. Was very sore last night, and this morning. I was dreading taking that first step on my run, but somehow running is the only time it DOESN'T hurt. Weird. Hope you feel better soon!!!

The band is called Spoken, and they're on a European tour right now. Their lead singer, Matt Baird, did an acoustic set for our people, and they loved it. Hopefully I can link to one of their songs here, if not, just search YouTube for the band name and his name... https://youtu.be/KKfekU6ulv4

@martaindale Great job on the distance PR! Even though conditions weren't optimal, you stayed tough and got through it. That's a runner's mindset 😉 💪

Me too! While a lot of people will tell you "if you can run 10 miles you can run a HM" I really regretted not having gone further in training. I think the knowledge that you can go the distance is very good for calming nerves!

I will blow your mind and tell you that most people that can run a half can run a full. :) I do not endorse that method of training, but I personally know more than one person that has done just that. At least one that made a wrong turn on a half race and ended up on the full course, which he finished (but still got a DNF for the half)

I personally ran my first 10-mile race after having a max "long-run" of 4 miles.

IMO, though, most runners talk about hitting a "wall" at say mile 20 in the marathon or mile 10 in the half, and guess about where their long runs ended about? It might be a coincidence, but I am not so sure it is.

There are good reasons to run less in training. In training you are running, by design, if you follow the plan, every long run on tired legs. You are, by design, pushing the edges of your limits. And the more you do that, the more likely you are to get hurt. By shortening the max long run, you significantly reduce that chance.

Still I am NOT a doctor, nor a coach or a trainer, just some old guy on the internet sipping coffee and jamming keys on a keyboard. So YMMV, and etc. :)

Shadow got a distance PR when I dragged her around for 3.57 miles. I dropped her off and ended at 4.3 miles.

    35.9/72-90 miles

    Woof! Woof!!!!

Yes! This is one place where endurance style running really shows its benefits. You build a mental toughness that will see you through much hardship in life in general. Well done.

So, yeah, it kind of sucked but I did it. Chances are fewer of these things will go wrong on the actual race day.

This is why you do long runs in training before a race. Well, in addition to the physical conditioning. :) You now know somethings that COULD go wrong on race day, and you can plan for them.

I usually start driving everyone nuts at this point with all my irrational fears about my race, but I'm actually feeling quite good and confident about this one at the moment, even if I do know I might struggle to go as fast as I need to for as long as I need to. But my legs feel good and I feel ready for it, whereas before my last (and only) HM I was swallowing ibuprofen and constantly slapping arnica on my legs. Of course once I start tapering (and I'm going to try quite a lengthy taper) I'll probably start driving everyone nuts. I apologise in advance!

    You got this! :)
