Lifting and long run today. I met my goal of getting started earlier so the entire day wouldn’t be eaten up with running. I didn’t take the dog because she puked last weekend and I promised her Id take her on a short, easy run tomorrow.
Total of 7.64 miles today! I only planned on 7, but per the usual, I was having fun and sort of exploring and then realized I didn’t know exactly where I was.... I worked on my pace a little but it is so hard for me to care about pace on a trail with a lot of changes in elevation. Plus I had already lifted and my legs were getting tired. I ran on the paved, flat trail for a little bit to see if I was faster on that surface and it shaved actual minutes off the splits. I went from 19 to 15 just from switching and that was with frequent stops to take pictures. I also found a deer, who met my gaze after I said hello. We stared at each other for a while and after several seconds, took off running in opposite directions. It was really quite a bit of fun but now I need to figure out what to eat. I don’t even feel that hungry....0 -

Only 10 and much slower than planned. Temps are falling to the point that Raynaud's management is starting to be a limiting factor in runs. Plus I was just tired for some reason. Probably have a brief surge of warm weather though before winter really hits in January. We will see.8

@Camaramandy648 Sounds like a great run! Glad the deer went in the opposite direction and didn't start chasing you.
@PastorVincent Sorry your run didn't go as planned, but at least you were able to get out and run.
@shanaber Sorry life issues happened this week. Glad you were able to get in a couple of runs.
Today was a scheduled rest day. I mowed the lawn and blew the leaves off of the porches and driveway again. It won't be the last time either. Oh the joys of living in the middle of a stand of deciduous trees.2 -
Thank you so much @PastorVincent0

Cool! That looks like a very elegant way to do them. I see what you mean by lowering yourself down from one.
thanks @mbaker5661 -
@somum Having to walk a half in those cold temperatures, brr... in many ways harder than running! Good job finishing, you earned your medal! Hope your ankle heals quickly!
My husband and I did 5k yesterday at the Greenway, just at dusk. Weather lovely but chilly breeze. The path was ankle deep in all colors of fallen leaves. Also: I love eating pecans, but hate running on them. Heel striking on a hidden pecan is like suddenly discovering you are wearing one roller skate. It was supposed to be a fast run (we usually do a fast first mile then a couple of faster intervals) but ended up being only medium speed, because we both have colds. I felt a little better yesterday than the day before, but feel worse today. So far this feels like a simple, straightforward cold, so hopefully it will get better soon and not worse.
As far as my weird leg spasm, it didn’t bother me at all during the first fast mile, then started up while we were taking a walk break. Going faster and ignoring it seems to make it behave better. I’m still thinking weird nerve thing.7 -
Commitments for November:
1) Run at least 36 miles
2) Walk at least 100 miles
3) Finish the last 2 weeks of Active's C25K program Done
4) Finish the first 2 weeks of Active's 5K to 10K program
Friday night, I spent a long dinner chatting with a friend who has been running for 8 years, and now does ultras. Totally geeked out on sharing plans for the next year. He's the one who is going to run with me in my first 5k next month.
This morning I had the first meeting with my GP since I started this running thing. I love my GP. He got all excited for me and asked me if I was going to try to race an HM sometime by the end of 2020. He has started running recently, also.
Oh... and my BP was 92/58. My BP was lowish-normal before I started running, anyway, but I was not expecting this drop. My doc was excited about that too. He's a hyper little dude. :-)

It was not easy but I made it. I rolled my ankle starting off too fast in the corral so I ended up walking the half☹️. The pain was intense but I pushed thru and while I am slightly bummed about having to walk I am so thankful I finished strong and still ran across the finish line running the last mile. The conditions were harsh with temps below freezing and with the wind chill factor it easily felt like it was in the teens. ...
Your toughness is an inspiration.

Slippery leaves alone are no joke. I got a seriously bad shoulder injury slipping (and falling) due to some leaves two years ago. Be careful!

10km race report for this morning.
My client sponsors Shanghai Marathon every year, and invites a bunch of their customers and VIPs to run the race. My company gets to handle their logistics. We need to be able to get into the starting areas and such, and I guess runner bibs are easier/cheaper than passes, so I get to run the race length of my choice as long as I'm faster than the last VIP. This year I chose the 10km.
I haven't been getting much sleep lately, and the race starts at 7am, so I set an alarm for 5am to leave time to eat and walk to the starting line. I was thinking that I wanted to finish in less than 60 minutes, so was aiming for 6min kms the whole way.
The course this year was very crowded, there were a total of 38,000(!) registered runners, and most of them were in front of me. The first km came in at 6:02, and then at a steady 5:5x, which meant I was right on schedule, or so I thought. I was feeling pretty good as I passed the 6:15 and then the 5:30 pacer groups for the full marathon race. Nearly missed the first aid station because there were too many people crowding me out, and then had to apologize profusely to a lady I pushed pretty hard when I nearly tripped over a bulge in the road.
By the time I saw my first mileage market it was 7km. My watch said 7.5 something, which is when I realized that either my tangents were way off, or my Garmin was having trouble locking in with satellites and thought I was running faster than I actually was.
The problem got worse as the race when on - I walked the second aid station at around 8km and Garmin clocked that km at 5:09. I had been running for 56 minutes give or take when I saw the 9km marker and knew for sure that I wasn't going to make it. Eventually finished the race in 1:03, and Garmin thinks the course was 11km, which it most certainly is not. No PB.
But the course was good and the spectators were awesome. Will take a picture of the bling later.
@somum Well done! Congrats! Now take care of that ankle!
@Camaramandy648 That sounds like a great run.16 -
Ran Xterra Waihi yesterday - mid distance which was about 12.5km according to my watch. We started in the Karangahake Gorge, which is stunning. It’s an old gold mining area so we ran through a mining tunnel - well, walked. It was dark (torches compulsory), very uneven with pools of water underfoot, and narrow (single file) and low (smacked my head on the way in which was unpleasant).
After about 4km on the flat along the river (narrow and uneven solid rock underfoot) we headed up the hill. We climbed for the next 4km - 350m without a downhill or even levelling off, which was brutal. Then it’s down. Really steep, really slippery, really technical with a lot of tree roots determined to kill or maim you).
Managed to meet my number one trail running goal of ‘don’t fall over’ so am happy with that. The medic tent at the finish line was full with people icing ankles or getting scrapes patched.
Was an awesome day out and I was thrilled with my decision to run the mud distance rather than the long (21km) that I did last year (I’m still scarred from the 700m climb).
Nice touch was the bling, made to look like a gold ingot to reflect the gold mining history of the area.
Trail along the river - you can see it cut into the rock.
Super steep downhill. Was regretting my shoe choice at this point. Last year I ran in road shoes and they were great (work well on the rock) but it was wetter underfoot this year and rather slippery!
Ran 10k with my club around the neighborhood this morning. Legs objected and refused to go faster than a lame turtle. Not surprised.14 -
@ContraryMaryMary WTG on your race and meeting your goal of "not falling over." It looks like a gorgeous place to run, but the climb sounds brutal. Love the bling too.1
-
@somum so sorry about the ankle! You are tough to finish the whole thing, congratulations. Take good care of yourself and hope you heal quickly.
@noblsheep congrats on your 10k. That's a big race! I'm sure it was tough to navigate. Sorry you didn't get your goal time, but well done!
@ContraryMaryMary great job your trail race. Wow, that sounds technical so definitely a big victory to stay upright! Looks gorgeous and I love the gold ingot medal. Very cool.1 -

Definitely.
A race that crowded it is usually impossible to run the proper tangents so your watch distance is probably closer than the actual race distance. If you really want to check to pull up the map and zoom in along your route. If the GPS has you in places you were not then you had poor satellite reception. If not then you really ran that far.
City routes with tall buildings on all sides are notorious for blocking GPS.

Yesterday I ran 3 miles with Jackson. It felt easy and fast.
This morning, I was planning on running 7-8 miles. Long story short, I was drenched after an hour in the rain and cut it short. The hot shower afterward was glorious!3 -
@noblsheep - congratulations even if not a PB it is still a great job! That is a huge race! Do they separate the starts for the different distances? Most of the big races I have been to have the shorter distances either on a different day or well split from the longer distances.
@ContraryMaryMary - what a gorgeous area but I would be terrified of falling! Awesome job on not falling over and finishing! Congratulations!
@somum - Ouch!! What a way to run your 1st big race coming back! I hope your ankle is feeling better!
On the watch question from a couple of days ago (yes I am just getting caught up)... I have the Apple Watch and love it. I pair it with a HRM band and run Strava on the watch which both reduce the battery draw. I have never had the battery die at any race or on long runs, even the slow ones over 3 hours. Are there some things I wish it did better? Of course, primarily I would love for Strava to show my actual pace ATM and not the overall for the split or run which are the only 2 choices. Also to be able to set a pace and have it alert me if I am going to fast. But that is a Strava limitation and not a watch issue. I can get it with other apps but I like using Strava because of the community there. I usually take my phone but I don't have to and can still have my music and my husband can track me. I do sometimes think I would like to have a Garmin but I really can't justify it and I don't know that I would use most of the features it provides.
@RunsOnEspresso - I used to run fasted until I started having so many issues and saw the nutritionist. She gave me very specific instructions to eat 30g carbs and 15g fat before a run and the 4:1 carbs to protein afterwards. Lately I have been having more GI issues so I have been running some of my short runs fasted but for long runs I have to eat or I can't finish even with mid-run fueling. Typically it is oatmeal with walnuts and maybe some tart cherries (no milk) and Skratch Labs fruit chews for mid-run.

@Camaramandy648 congrats on doing the 20 minutes! Told you you could do it!
@somum that sounds tough, good effort on finishing despite the ankle!
@noblsheep congrats on your 10k. Shanghai must be a fun city to run in, amazing views.
@ContraryMaryMary that race looks and sounds amazing! Well done on staying upright
So I had a bad week for running with nothing between Monday and Saturday, but then yesterday I did 8.53km as part of week 4 of bridge to 10k. Then today I went out late afternoon planning on doing a quick 5k. I only went because I was mad at my boyfriend's inability to recycle (over reaction I know but it really riled me), and the first 3k were tough, but then I really got into it. I kept on pushing and taking turns which took me away from home, and before I knew it I'd done 10k! Alright, it took an hour 11 minutes, but that is further than I've run for a few years, so super proud of myself!

7.5 miles flat, warm, and windless at the beach. It is my 3rd day in a row running and I predicted I would be sore and achy, but it was really nice.4
-
Found this thread a tad late. I'm trying to get back into running. I was doing really well last year until I went on vacation then stopped working out all together. I just recently learned how to run on my toes and not get horrible shin splints. I can honestly say that I now look forward to running at the gym now that I can go and not be so sore the next day. Took me a little bit to figure out and I have to work on my stamina, but I will get there14
-
Congratulations @noblsheep! 3 minutes off without a Garmin is darn good! Did you finish before the slowest VIP? Reading your race report made me miss running!0
-
9.41 miles today. Achilles tendon is still bothering me and this was a very low mileage week after the double marathons last weekend. I worked yesterday, which didn't help, and stayed in town today where I mostly run around a 1/2 mile track and that gets boring fast. I'm thinking I'll come up with a plan to keep the Achilles improving while increasing mileage again.

5km evening run, a big sunday lunch still sitting on my stomach.
November goals (all ish)
1. 15 runs.......................8
3. 100km........................56km
4. Long 10km.................11km
5. 100% Morning runs...5/82 -
Not been good about regular running, or posting so trying to do better and get back to twice weekly runs. Got out on Wednesday and today, 2.5 miles each time, slow but reasonably steady. My plan is to build up some stamina first and then work on speed. I did my first half marathon last year, finishing in 3 hours, I have entered again for next year but then stopped regular running (busy life, excuses and just laziness) but want to finish faster an last time.7
