WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR NOVEMBER 2019

Happy Friday, enjoying an early morning cup of coffee and a catch up with you all, hope everyone celebrating had a good holiday. Our T-day hosting for 10 was a good experience. As an introvert, I did step out of my comfort zone but all in all, I enjoyed cooking and seeing folks together. Was it perfect, nope, I singed the turkey a bit and the mashed potatoes were forgotten on the kitchen counter But I didn't let perfect be the enemy of the good, there was laughter and storytelling and I played (and lost) 2 rounds of dominoes with family.
Best food move of the afternoon, I started with a bowl of soup which filled me up, then I just had a smidge/taste of the carb-laden food that I only enjoy once a year (stuffing, mac & cheese, gravy). I loaded everyone up with leftovers so I don't have too much of anything tempting me for the rest of the week so that was another great move. I did enjoy 2 glass of wine with dinner, so yes the scale reflects an uptick. However, it's back to regular eating patterns and I will complete the November weight loss challenge with a loss of 2 lbs, back at maintenance weight!
Safe travels and stay cozy everyone this weekend.

Mirabile dictu Ci<Co Thanksgiving. As usual, under-estimated time required so had to simplify. Plain baked sweet potatoes instead of casserole with spiced maple pecans. Simple steamed brussels sprouts instead of roasted with maple balsamic bacon topping. Never got around to whipping the cream. Long since eliminated the mashed potatoes and dinner rolls as stuffing is our favorite. Worked to my advantage both time- and healthy eating-wise.
No BB&B today, college closed for the holidays. Going to drop in on my old T'ai Chi class, and if they're not there due to the holiday, my buddy and I are going out to breakfast. A challenge for me as I don't like eggs and love all carb laden breakfasts.
Today will be more active and AF. Need to work some of the creaks out this weekend so I have no excuse not to go to BB&B.
Heather “Arrived at the bus NOT out of breath “ you give me hope! I'd like to just be able to walk up our driveway without huffing and puffing.
Machka poked my nose into machka dot net, I am more and more impressed with your photographic artistry. Eye-catching, wonderful colors, storytelling composition. True art! Not to mention your physical accomplishments. WOW. I used to love the view of SF Bay while commuting to work on the bus. The memory still soothes.
Allie you're brave to do the 23 and me, I'm tempted but still skittish.
Carol what's the “aw snap” message from Windows 10?
Lanette Joe is like your DH, would refuse to move to town due to neighbors. We're only 5 miles from town, such as it is, and 25 from our area's small rural hospital. Trying to enjoy every moment of where we are now and not worry about what I can't change. So glad your shoulder is better, but that medical massage sounds like it was brutal. Ow! Love my Mira MT105 but don't see it on Amazon any more. Here's the closest:

What I love: smooth glass easy to clean, can do tare weight on even large bowls, big lit numbers, only 3 aaa batteries (not 9v) has lasted for years.
Welcome sparky916!
Amber “oh Sheep... baaaa” ROTFLMAO!
Rori would you share your maple bourbon turkey chili recipe? It's 3:22 am and my mouth is watering.
Karen in VA have you tried these?http://pupgearpetproducts.com/products/paw-pads . Neither Robbie nor Scooter would tolerate booties or socks with grips, but let me stick these on. They help but don't stay on for more than a couple of days, so I scrimped by only using 2 or 3 and only on the rear paws. Amazon sells a powder system, and some anti slip strips for stairs, search pawfriction, but the reviews are mixed...
Katla are you familiar with Connie Willis' novella “Miracle” ?
NYKaren, I undercooked the turkey breast a little and forgot to put the sweet potatoes on the table until Joe had finished his first plate, but we both enjoyed the feast anyway.
Gratitudes Day
#14 sight: my DH's lowered pressure numbers, his glaucoma has stabilized with no immediate need for surgery. Long may he see the ocean from our front room, the dogs playing together at the edge of the woods, the fog through the trees.#13 abilities: touch typingLighter, lovelies!
#12 texture: Tumble's double coat, long straight strong guard hairs undercoated with soft downy fur. Shadow's silky puppy ears.
#11 holiday: Christmas. The music, the lights, the scent of the Christmas tree, the story, the memories, the taste of egg nog, tom and jerry's, and oh yes... baking, smelling and eating the COOKIES!!!
#10 taste: today its fresh ice water. After too much wine it really tastes good.
#9 place: our property, all 15 vertical acres of it, woods, ferns, creeks, mud, brush, critters, peeks at the ocean and the way it smells when I get out of the car. “Home!”
#8 book: To Build a Land by Sally Watson. Read this children's novel when I was 9. It was about a group of Jewish orphans transported to Israel after WWII. Identifying with one of the characters sparked a life long interest in archeology, Hebrew and ultimatly spurred me to visit the holy land in 1980.
#7 memory: at holidays Papa told stories about his younger days, during Prohibition and the Depression (but never about WWII). I could repeat them almost word for word but enjoyed them every time. That's one thing I miss about not having family left for holiday get togethers.
# 6 nature: the forest's scent and the ocean's clamour
# 5 sound: Joe snoring
# 4 food: Fage Greek Yoghurt
# 3 color: blue skies after a gray rainy foggy couple of days.
# 2 tech: my Win 7 laptop. Dread migrating to something newer/supported.
# 1 smell: clean, bleached whites while transferring from washer to dryer.

Good morning all! Happy Friday/day after thanksgiving! It felt so good, yesterday to be able to sleep in (slept in until 6:00). I made avocado toast for myself and Tim had an omelet. I put the pies in the oven and headed out for a walk in the sunshine! I think, if I ever retire, that is going to be one of the things I will enjoy the most; being able to walk when I feel like it. Came home from my walk and began the big meal prep. Tim and Colin went for the ham (the don't like turkey), potatoes, gravy, and stuffing; and I started with my butternut squash soup and a salad. This proved to be a smart move. That pretty well filled me up so that I had two small slices of ham, and a quarter cup of both mashed potatoes and stuffing. The meal was at 2:30 so it served as both lunch and dinner. I had a piece of pumpkin pie at about 6:00 as I watched the movie Somewhere In Time. I was about 300 cals over my allotment; but my walk and yoga took care of that. So...I feel good about my food choices yesterday. Due to the holiday meal, I won't have to do much cooking (for the family) this weekend; I will still have to food prep for next week, though. Today, I don't plan to walk, but if the sun is out I will head out and do it anyway. Today is the day I pull my bins up from the basement and begin the Christmas decorating. Fall deco gets packed away and the smell of cinnamon fills the air. I will have a couple of Christmas movies going. The two I start the holidays with are Holiday Inn and White Christmas. I also like to watch You've Got Mail and Serendipity during this weekend. Those are not necessarily Christmas movies, but they do have Christmas scenes in them.
Karen VA - I don't know how it happened, but I think I forgot to tell you how beautiful Olivia and Phoenix are! They are getting so big! It must have slipped my mind because you put them in a spoiler! I don't know, putting babies and fur babies in spoilers is like that line in Dirty Dancing "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!"
Sparky- Hello and welcome! I had never heard of the Hernreid program (I live in Michigan, so that could be why). I had to look it up! I hope it works for you!
Lanette- I am hoping that Tim and I will be able to move into town when we get older. I am positive that I will not be able to keep up with this house and yard when I hit my 70s/80s. I plan to keep it up for a few years, yet (as well as working for another 15 years minimum). Living in town would put us closer to all of the services we need. Grocer, doctors, restaurants, etc.
Well, I guess it is time for me to get busy! Love and hugs to you all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)2 -
We went to our first Christmas function of the season ... a Christmas function with the Rescue Helicopter group this evening. My husband got to talk to the helicopter pilot who transported him off the island, to the medical specialist who treated him while still on the island and on the way to the hospital, and to people he knows associated with the rescue helicopter service.
We're both very thankful for them all!!
And the seriousness of the situation was brought home when the medical specialist, a doctor who specialises in trauma, told us that the remembers my husband and is glad to see him upright and talking!! He told us that, at the time, he wasn't sure if my husband was going to live or die.
We've been back to ICU, the neuro ward, rehab, etc. because my husband wants to meet the people involved in his recovery process and thank them. This was another one of those steps. He also needs to fill gaps because he has lost quite a bit of his memory.
On a different subject ... I bought a new red top for Christmas this year, which I wore this evening. And knowing me, I'll probably wear it for several years.
Machka in Oz5 -
Machka - Let's see the red top!
It's a bit obvious, but my favourite season is early spring. I love seeing the first flowers pushing out of the ground and I enjoy filling the house with daffodils.
DH slept well and woke up a bit penitent and being nice to me. I ordered a new wok burner, then immediately cancelled it. At last I got him to look at the burner and with one twist he mended it! It's not perfect, but it's usable. Saved me a few pennies.
Gorgeous sunshine outside. I may just row as I ran yesterday. I can always gaze at the sunshine. It's going to get colder this weekend.
Then I'm going to cook pigs' cheeks in beer.
I'm feeling Christmas cards weighing on me, so might do a few.

Happy Post-Thanksgiving to everyone. Thanksgiving dinner is nerve-racking to me because of all the preparations, but most of all, keeping track of what goes in my tummy. I used to count the calories of every piece of food, but now, I am keeping track of macros. I had to put the macro logging on pause so I may enjoy the company of my loved ones and meals. It was wonderful.
Yesterday is gone, now is back to my healthy meals.
I'm Etboces from Orange County, New York2 -
etboces, welcome. Thanksgiving dinner was nerve wracking to me, too, even though I cooked just for my husband and me. I slightly overcooked the turkey and it broke in half as we moved it from the cooking pan to the plate for carving. But it was delicious.
My line dance class is meeting as usual today but attendance will probably be smaller than usual. Several people have let me know that they won't be there. Now I have to go walk the dogs and get back early so I can get to class.

There are several Black Friday Instant Pot deals on Amazon…
__________
Machka Yes! I'd like to see the red top, too.
Kelly…and don't think it didn't occur to me I'd get a frowny face from you for putting the photos of Olivia & Phoenix in a spoiler…but but but…the photos are so ginormous! & so I made an executive decision, LOL!!! I thought long & hard about it, knowing I'd displease my baby-adoring friend.
NYKAREN Somehow I missed that you were going to have 10 people for Thanksgiving! That's a bit nerve wracking even for an extrovert! It sounds as if it went very well. I'm guessing you had some wonderful music playing in the background.
Barbara Those doggy-paw-traction-doodads might just work for Mr. Bailey! Thank you so much! Traction socks don't stay on.
Katla I find myself encouraged by your blueberry success. June is blueberry month in Virginia.
Lisa Missing your posts! Hope you had a terrific Thanksgiving!

Well SHEEP 🐑!!!! Baaaaaaa Gained 2lbs! Hubby 4 he worked out yesterday! We were so careful but we think it was cookies 🍪 we got home ate healthy before bed we had a couple.70cal a piece who knows the ingredients at Thanksgiving sure Splenda to healthy ingredients were not used at all.
Hubby had the sweet potatoes 🍠 or yams told him after he said he only had a little meat y that....ummm Cousin uses marshmallow fluff in a jar, pecans, Karo syrup,y sugar. Oops 😬.I had potatoe with bacon 🥓 in it no telling the calories. So guesstimate was off but damage not too bad got to be careful today .
Exercise, chicken baked with broccoli/cauliflower mixed bag, y homeMade guacamole maybe a few air fryer baked tortilla chips. Got soup if needed left 70cal as a go to. Just got to be wise today.

I can't seem to catch up, there is so much turmoil going on in family and I don't handle such aggression well. Smith family nonsense is like a snowball rolling downhill gathering momentum.
My niece had her right kidney and renal cell carcinoma mass removed Wednesday. The surgery went well and she is in hospital recovering.
Our two new great- grandbabies will arrive late March, early April. One boy one girl. Very thrilled.
Jack's grandson and fiance will graduate college Dec, 16, get married Dec. 19th. Half, or more, of Jack's family have been uninvited from all of the events. I do not like the situation in any way. Jack and I went to his oldest son's in-laws ranch for Thanksgiving dinner. They own a 200 acre long-horn cattle ranch about two hours south of us. This guy was outside the front door at evening feeding time. I was invited to step out the front door "to touch him". I politely declined. Yikes !!
Love you my friends.

Janet- Longhorns are a more gentler breed do well with buffalo...a little too well town I lived in the noticed a new calf At it’s Moms breast not knowing she had been pregnant. The ugliest buffs-cow calf you’d ever see lol 😂. Buffalo head with big long horn hirns y colors with a mismatched body. He was not cute at all even as an adult a few years later. BEEFALO their called lol 😂. Town in Bandera Texas has a long horn in town they retired his father both love beer 🍺 y music 🎶. But that’s more incentive to leave your car windows up...1 person learned the hard way those horns are tough on roof carpet .It just stood there till the music stopped then left . They both have kids picture rides never hurt a one. Only person hurt was a father who tripped then blamed the bull...lol the bull was asleep lol 😂 city folk nonsense didn’t he hear it snoring sleeping off his booze 🥃!

Heard the new wedding thing is a lot of young couples are opting for smaller get togethers .Not inviting anyone who causes trouble. If your a drinker at weddings your not invited to the after dancing with drinks. If you y your ex fight every time causing a scene...one is invited to this the other to something else...if your the type to invite yourself when you cause trouble your not invited at all. If your the type who complains they may choose not to invite or just a few events. If your a gift swiped your not invited to the gift parts or at all. If your the type to say a mean comment like you look fat in that dress white is not your color...don’t expect an invite at all. Their opting for more tranquility the article’s said. Too many tired of others nonsense I guess. Also mentioned some are only inviting closer relatives so a 3rd cousin who they grew up with have Thanksgiving with probably will not get an invite...but an Aunt will or just 1st cousins. Some are also choosing child free so if you got a kid no invite. Some are not inviting relatives who are predators to known abusers it read to create safer environments send a clear message that it’s not acceptable. Some it’s financial reasons maybe they can afford only 18 people here y 2 there y 26 over here.0 -
Sorry Janetr for your family woes.
The pigs cheeks were absolutely perfect. I cooked them in beer in the IP. SOOOOOO tender. Had curly kale and frozen broad beans with them.
Trying to decide what to do about Christmas presents. I'm inclined to abandon the whole idea, apart from the grandchildren. I have no money and I'm turning into a bit of a minimalist. Dont need stuff. Haven't broached the subject yet with my kids or family, but DH and I are on the same page. Just Santa presents this year for the two of us. DH is buying for his kids. Maybe we could do a 'no more than £5 ' thing with my kids/brother. Or charity donations. I gave money to my elder son for his birthday this weekend, but I am finding I'm resentful as he never even sends me a card. Not even for my 70th. I don't think he 'deserves' a Christmas present.
I will be seeing him next week, so can broach the subject.
Haven't seen the grandchildren for a couple of weeks and we are pining. They will get their presents.

@barbiecat, @auntiebk and the rest of this forum, thanks for the welcoming and supportive comments!
We had so much snow in Albuquerque for Thanksgiving that I had a good workout clearing the driveway and sidewalks. The mounds of snow are now melting, and a monstrous rainstorm is bearing down on us... makes me grateful to live on an established hill, as our sandy soil is typically bone-dry and saturates quickly, creating quite the runoff.
Having had so many years of obligation to finding work, caring for my mom and finishing schoolwork, having leisure time still feels like a novelty. What shall I do today?? I think I'll take out the sewing machine and work through some remnants, turning them into grocery sacks as Christmas gift wrappings. Finally, New Mexico is catching up with the rest of the civilized world in prohibiting plastic grocery sacks. If I can create a useful item and avoid the waste of paper wrap at the same time, it will be my small contribution.
Too much rain to ride the bike today... too many crazed drivers out there seeking big spending deals on black Friday... Seems like a good day for staying in, making green chile tortilla soup from turkey leftovers and sewong a few things.
XOXO

Here’s today’s Youths ideas of weddings. My Day any family in the town was invited you invited relatives you didn’t like abroad even (good chance they hate you too won’t show up until after the wedding month). My last wedding we didn’t get a wedding the court house judge was supposed to answer our ceremony questions including how many guests is allowed to attend. We answered his questions was asking ours heard...... oopsie ummm I just married you your done no need for a wedding 👰. Judge 👨⚖️ took another bite of his sandwich 🥪 chomp chomp congrats burp. So engaged y married with the flu same day. Lol 😂 y hubby was drunk from getting liquid courage to pop the question lol 😂. So when asked a non -formal do you want to be his wife...I hickishly answered “Hell Yah!” Hubby answered “Well that’s why we’re here Isn’t it!” Lol we didn’t realize he was asking the Yes I Do question in a relaxed way. So back home ummmm 😳 I’m married ...he lives far away so I work 2weeks? Ummm it’s the wedding night can’t go to work in the morning. Daughter mad she wasn’t there for it Teen stomping mad! Dad y Mom in shock what are you going to do? Your not packed this is suck short notice.... finally Mom said your place is with your husband go come back to sort it all out happy honey moon. So Daughter y me packed a tiny suitcase went spent weeks sorting everything from school to work to packing .She had to go to school so long drive daily until she was done. Letting her say friend goodbyes on short notice then mad teen. Was going to have an after dinner we thought to smooth stuff over ,but ummm his family y mine were mad or confused. Then found out same thing happened to My Grandma lol 😂.We need to stop copying each other she even had my Uncle late in life her uterus exploded (hysterectomy back then think that’s better than how they handled mine!) Definitely was a lot of hurt feelings from his Mom to Sister since they hadn’t met me yet ....oopsie! Did it all backwards Engaged,Married, then paperwork with court house y state to get married, then ring sizing, etc
Hubby idea 💡:
1.Date
2. Engaged research wedding 👰 be ok a court house date (since I had the flu wasn’t working perfect timing he thought....ummm diahreah y vomiting flu thanks for that moment as I swigged idomodium Hughes every toilet on the way) have me sized for my rings.Since my job wanted all my paychecks back was acting like they weren’t going to work out perfect timing he decided.
3. Get wedding y engagement rings from jeweler
5. Meet his family y mine with intimate dinners to outings after 2week bye at job
6. Get teen used to the idea gradually once she is finished with school wedding y moving
7. Pack us up start moving items
8. Wedding 💒
9. Big huge fancy dinner out with everyone
10. Worry about teen y us (lol Doctor was eating a sandwich 🥪 in the delivery room as JR our surprise came into our world)
Lol we skipped everything was 1,2, oh nooooo lol so no ring explaining we’re married got engaged same day. Caused issues wasn’t smooth sailing ⛵️ for hubby y me caused issues at first we had to work through. Fought with my job issues to mad teen etc including mad snippy family that puts a strain on a new marriage.

I thoroughly enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at my son and daughter in law's yesterday. I will be cutting back and being more careful the rest of the week into next. It was so worth it though. My old high school played in the state football championship today. I watched it on tv. They got blown out so it's just as well that I didn't make the trip.

Barbara: I have not seen Miracle.
Karen in VA: I bought three blueberry plants from a well-known Portland garden center several years ago. Each year they are more and more productive. They are not all the same cultivar- one is early the other two are midseason.
Pip: Great news for Yogi! I’m glad the antibiotics helped. :flowerforyou:
I went to yoga today and had a wonderful time. I missed some classes while I travelled and also when we had guests. It was great to see everyone and get some exercise.

Hi Ladies
I've been MIA for a few days (or more!), have been reading, but haven't had enough time to comment.
Had an epiphany on Wed night, after I mowed my way halfway thru a box of garlic parmesan triscuits, I really need to treat my body better! Yesterday was a good day, I packed a proper lunch for work, with good snacks also. Had pasta all planned out for dinner, and it all worked out too. I did not have any junk food until after dinner and that was limited to some (planned!) cookies. I also got to bed at a more reasonable time, none of this on the computer til midnight stuff, then shower and bed - really not good for me when I have to get up at 7. I really should be up at 6 so that I can go to the gym before work, but that didn't happen this week. But that's okay, today is going well also, haven't had any unplanned food and still have my veggies to snack on in a bit. Baby steps! Will get back to the gym next week, will actually start being purposely active on Sunday when I go for a walk with my friend. I am active at work, but I don't normally count that as the moving is sporadic. It can be quite a workout some days, but..... lol.
Thinking of you all, hoping everyone is keeping warm and safe, some nasty weather is a few areas! Envying Machka entering spring and summer!
Rebecca, nice to see the pic of your son, must have been a load off your mind to see him looking healthy and happy!
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating, and welcome to the newbies!

🎄🤶 Gratitude for Christmas 🎅🏻🎄#1, 15 Nov: Scents: loved the smell of the roses I put into my Floral arrangement#12, 25 Nov, Texture: I love the feel of fresh soft fluffy towels after my shower.
#2, 16 Nov:Technology: Glad that I had my car and didn’t have to stand in the cold waiting for a bus
#3, 17 Nov: Colour: the colour of the beautiful sunset as I walked home in the late afternoon
#4, 18 Nov: Food: Fresh produce form my own garden ..... or ....... Chocolate! 🍫 My ultimate comfort food.
#5, 19 Nov: Sound: I'm grateful for the sound of DH moving about downstairs. It's very comforting.
#6, 20 Nov: In Nature: I love the view of the night sky from my bedroom window on clear nights.
#7, 21 Nov: Memory: This triggered a veritable avalanche of memories of my life, the happy moments crowding out the less pleasant ones. So... the memory I am most grateful for is my own selective memory, which chooses to focus on the positives, and reframe the negatives as learning experiences.
#8, 22 Nov: Book: "Unlimited Power" by Tony Robbins. This book was a revelation to me and showed me that I was in charge of my life. It was pretty scary at first to accept responsibility for all my actions and decisions. It was no longer possible for me to blame others or make excuses. But it was such a positive turning point in my life. I revisit it often.
#9, 23 Nov - Place: the place I am most grateful for is the quiet place in my head where I go when I meditate.
#10, 24 Nov - Taste: Today grandson had made an experimental mulled wine drizzle cake. I was grateful that it tasted so good, (not all of his experiments turn out so well 😂) Fortunately, I always hold calories for my Sunday visit, so was able to fully enjoy his delightful concoction (NB: lemon drizzle cake is one of my favourites)
#11, 25 Nov - Holiday: I love my annual week's family holiday on the West coast of Ireland with our DED and the grands. This year was our 24th year of these holidays. We started them with my DMiL when our granddaughter was just 8 months old. I am grateful that all 3 grands still want to come on these holidays with us.
#13, 26 Nov, Abilities: I treasure my ability to be adaptable, and look for the positive in situations.
#14, 27 Nov, Sight: I appreciate the sight of my husband bringing my tea in bed each morning. It means I can take my time waking up.
#15, 28 Nov, Season: All the season's have their good points' but the spring is my favourite because it heralds the end of winter and the lengthening of daylight hours.
#16, 29 Nov: I'm grateful that bones are strong. I have been very fortunate in that I have never had a broken bone. Long may that continue

Small but fun line dance class today. Cold enough to wear my red extra warm coat. Turkey and stuffing leftovers for lunch. Exercise bike, knitting, and watching figure skating after lunch. Another long dog walk. Who could ask for anything more.

When I was with my ex-husband, Christmas was massive and stressful. Presents for everyone and they had to be just right.
When we separated, Christmas became so much simpler.
Now I order 2 gift cards a few days before Christmas. One for my parents and one for my brother and his kids.
For my sister-in-law here, we'll might take her out for dinner and there might be a small trinket ... or maybe a gift card to an art supply shop - she's quite artistic.
For us ... we're going out for that Christmas buffet I mentioned earlier and we might go somewhere like maybe a wildlife park or some other activity or event.
We tend to do things rather than spend money on gifts. I've got more than enough stuff!!
EDIT: Once, from this side of the world, I was able to get and pay for a set of gift certificates for my brother's kids (on the other side of the world) to go to a class of their choice at an art studio. The studio offered 2-hour classes for kids on painting, pottery, etc. etc. They could go together into one or choose individual ones.
