@7lenny7 oh no! How is your hip feeling now? It feels like recovering from a pulled muscle takes forever. I’m just now feeling like I might be ready to run again with this darned hamstring I pulled early November2

@noblsheep - love the shoes and cat butt cameo! 😁
@Tramboman and @quilteryoyo - I am loving your 12 Runs of Christmas!! I am just not that creative!
@Camaramandy648 - I don't do trails or use stability shoes but I agree with @PastorVincent on shoe mileage. Depending on the runner and the shoes some of us may get more or less miles from a pair. I just retired 2 pairs of Altra Escalantes that were at or under 300 miles because they made my knee hurt more when I ran. These were my go to shoes for long runs/races. I have had other 0 drop, more minimal shoes that I have run close to 700 miles in without issue before retiring them. I do typically have between 2 and 4 pairs in rotation. Also like @rheddmobile I never buy the brand new shoes as soon as they are released because of cost sure but also because the manufacturers make changes to them and I want to see the reviews. Let other people try them out and find the issues.
@7lenny7 - so glad to see you back! I saw your run on Strava and figured you had just been too busy hunting and with the holidays to run. I am sorry about the injury and hope it is feeling better so you can get out there more!5 -

I woke up today to a pleasant surprise! This year during the lead up to the West Cancer Center 5k, which is my husband’s and my “runniversary” race as well as being a cause we support because he was a patient there, we noticed that a photo of us running the race in 2018 was being used in all the promotional materials - mailers, news release in local paper, even a stand-up at the packet pickup! I couldn’t find an online version of it that wasn’t low res, so I wrote the media director and asked if I could get a full resolution copy, and today she got back to me!
Most photos of me running look pretty terrible, and when I look okay my husband usually doesn’t, or one of us is blurry or cropped out, so it’s nice to have a good photo of us both! And at our favorite race on our home turf! This was mid-day in the middle of September and the temperature was about 100, thus the abundant sweat.
A little bonus - long term readers may recall my arch-nemesis “Stroller Lady”, who taught me a lesson in humility at my first race by beating the pants off me while pushing a stroller, then proceeded to whup me repeatedly at many local races. She’s visible in the background here. I feel obliged to point out that she’s running under a double handicap, not only is she pushing a one-year old but she’s carrying a second baby in her tum. But I did run faster than she did, on this one single occasion!10 -
@7lenny7 I was missing you! Glad you’re back, sorry to hear the reason you were gone. You and ultras, man, you tore up your foot the same time last year.2

Whew hot out there! Sorry to disappoint, went with 6 because its supposed to be a short day with a longer run tomorrow. Trying to avoid an injury haha
Whew!
Woo hoo that's 900km for 2019! I'm pretty happy with that.
Definitely going to aim for 1000 for 2020. Given I had 3 months in the middle of the year where I only managed 20k each month it should be achievable10 -
@emmamcgarity @shanaber and @rheddmobile
This recovery was more precautionary than it was forced. In the second ultra in South Dakota (50K) I started feeling what I thought was hip joint pain about halfway through the race. It was tolerable and after a point, it never got worse, so I kept going.
The following weekend at the 8 hour race it flared up again but again, it wasn't too bad until after 30 miles. That's when I should have stopped but kept going another 8 miles because the clock was still ticking. At this point I still thought it was joint paint.
During our first hunting trip the following weekend it was odd. Walking fields didn't bother it, but trying to lift my right leg up into my truck caused as sharp pain. If I got momentum by first swinging my leg back and then swinging it forward and up, I could get in. That's when I decided it was likely my hip flexor. All this is self diagnosed so I'm not sure.
I waited a week to run trail again and everything felt great until mile 6 when a dull hip pain came back, as well as pain in my lower calf muscles. This was followed up by other runs 3 to 7 days apart, with a 10 mile trail race 5 weeks after my last ultra. While that race felt pretty good, I didn't run for another 2.5 weeks out of precaution and because life was getting busy. Last week my daughter and I ran twice, 5 miles each time, with no pain at all so I'm hopeful I'm past it all.
So, I'm ramping my miles back up, cautiously, and have a road HM January 15th and a trail 50K February 22nd. I had intended on going for a HM PR but since I don't feel I can trail properly for a PR, I'll just take the finish time I get and be happy.
The 50K in February is the Psycho Wyco in Kansas City. In both 2018 and 2019 I wanted to do the 50K but was forced to go with 20M because I was coming off injury. God willing, I'll get my first Kansas 50K this time!
I had been considering trying my first 100M on March 28th in Kansas on a gravel rail-trail, but that is in doubt and will be a last minute decision.9 -
On an interesting note, strava and garmin differ by only 5k. Strava says I ran 905k, garmin says 900.
I assume that's due to small differences with how they interpret the GPS data. I'm going with Garmin because that's my primary indicator. But if the difference only adds up to 5k over a year, so 0.5% different, that's pretty cool!4 -
I ran 5k this morning which included 2 hills and I somehow made much better time than my flat 4.25 miles the other day. It was pretty chilly (feels like temp was 25) and pretty windy. I struggle with asthma and running into the wind literally feels like I'm drowning in air (the issue with asthma is not that you can't breathe in but rather that you can't exhale fully so there's no empty space to take in more air).
@rheddmobile That's an awesome pic!
@7lenny7 Hi
@LoveyChar Nice run...it looks sunny and warm there.6 -
@katharmonic Great job on reaching your December goal!
@7lenny7 Glad to see you are back. I meant to ask about you in this group yesterday, but didn't get around to it. Hope you can stay injury free.
@rheddmobile Fantastic that your picture is being used for promotional materials. Also great that you are in front of your nemesis.
WTG @Avidkeo ! Glad you got your 900km done.
On the Sixth Day Of Christmas,
my workout let me see,
Six children sleeping,
Five hills to run,
Four falling leaves,
Three black cows,
Two tractor tracks,
And a sweet bouncing boxer puppy.
Today was a rest day. I worked at the daycare in the one year old classroom. I actually saw 8 children sleeping, but not for very long. Those kids just don't want to take a nap. What's up with that? I go to my car and grab a 30 minute catnap on my break. I try to tell them they'll wish they could sleep when they get older, but they aren't buying it. LOL
I need to do at least 1.8 miles tomorrow in order to make my Dec goal of 50 miles. I'm not scheduled to work, so I should be able to do that. We'll see. Plans around here change with a moments notice.

No disappointment at all. You rock!1 -
Well 2019 is on its last legs, less than eight hours left to go here. No run for me today - I'm furiously cleaning instead. The Christmas tree is down and the decorations packed away. My five-year-old can see the floor in her room for the first time in months (well she could at lunchtime, that was four hours ago, things could have gone downhill). Our storeroom has a few fewer kids puzzles and art supplies a little more room. My office is no longer the wrapping room and dumping ground for things that were in the way.
I did pop out to Lululemon to spend my Christmas voucher – well, to try and spend it. Their Boxing Day sale is still on so there was lots of sale stock but not a lot in my size, and not much new stock as an alternative option. I did manage to get a new pair of shorts, which I desperately needed, but typically, they weren't on sale.
There's still a bunch of stuff that needs doing around the house but I'm kinda over it. I would like to head outside and do some weeding but it's way too hot and burny at present; I'll give in another hour. In the interim I'll fill in my booked events on my new wall calendar and make a list of things to do. I like lists.
Looking forward to 2020 and a whole new year of running adventures. Happy New Year everyone.7 -
So I just watched a bunch of YouTube videos on the Nashville Rock and Roll marathon and on one hand it was very encouraging and inspiring. ALL THOSE PEOPLE!!!! And they just KEPT GOING! Many in better shape than me - and many in what appears to be much worse shape but they’re the same - they all just kept moving their legs.
Also watching people finish! I almost cried!
Very inspired. Very motivated.
Supposed to run six miles tomorrow according to the schedule but my right hip is still sore so I will have to see how it feels. Reading @7lenny7 description of pain and discomfort has me a little concerned as that is how mine was feeling the past three runs. May need to slow it down ... bleh....9 -
Did the 14.2 today and my legs, especially my right ankle, hurt. Of course. But... should I take an ibuprofen or anything? I did a 12.4 the first of this month and I was so sore the day of but woke up the next morning and I felt fine. Today I feel worse. What would you do?
Basically, tough it out or is that stupid?3 -

Injury update - I can do single leg glute bridges without pain. There is a tiny bit of discomfort in the injured leg but definitely not pain. I have met and exceeded my other strength goals necessary before I allow myself to run again. I’m very tempted to test a short jog tomorrow but might just stick to cross training. I’ve been walking regularly for cardio and also doing some Leslie Sansone videos to get lateral movement each day in addition to my strength exercises. I’ll see how those glute bridges feel tomorrow morning. Hamstrings are annoying.10

Foam rolling might help your legs to recover if you have one.

Today is normally a rest day for me. I have a 5k race in the morning on a hilly course and fresh legs would be good. However, it is the last day of the year AND last night I checked my yearly mileage and am currently at 1194.26....Only 6 measly miles to get me to 1200 for the year....10
