It's time for the DECEMBER 2019 Running Challenge!
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the November 2019 Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10770461/november-2019-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until December 1, 2019 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody elses Chapter 20.

December is upon us!
Let's have a good month so we can enjoy our holidays, whatever you celebrate!
🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
My goal is going to be a little lower this month - 90 miles.
I have two races in December so far, but one is a Spartan Beast (13+ miles), and I don't know how much of that will be "running". We'll see! At least it will be flat. To my knowledge there are no mountains in Florida. I'm hoping there are no alligators as obstacles on the course. This is my last Spartan race of the season and will finish my "double trifecta" (sprint, super and beast distances x 2). I certainly didn't anticipate how this would all turn out when I started this year!
The other race is a fun one, you run across the bridge that inspired the scene in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". It's a crowded, crazy night run, and unless you are right up front you can't really race it. Which is fine with me. It's about costumes and cocoa and the occasional shot of Fireball from the neighbors along the route.
Upcoming races:
12/7/2019 Central Florida Beast Spartan Race, Mulberry, FL
12/14/2019 It's a Wonderful Run 5k, Seneca Falls NY
1/1/2020 Resolution Run (4-5 miles), Syracuse NY

Whooo hooo! I got in on the first page this month. That NEVER happens! I'm in for 50 miles again.
I have my first real race in at least 5 years this coming Saturday. It is a 5K. My goal is to run as I have trained and see how it goes. (I did NOT do this for the virtual race I did in July and it was a disaster.) I am also going to sign up for the Pioneer 5 mile race on Dec 21st. I ran this race back in 2012. I researched and found my results. I was stunned to see that I actually had a 10:29 pace. I know I have no chance in Hades of beating that time, so will just go out and enjoy that race too, with no expectations.
Question of the month: How do you decide which races you will run? I'm wanting to do more races next year and hope to do some destination ones. There seem to be so many that sound great on their website that I don't know how to choose.10 -
Thanks for setting us up, @katharmonic!
I am not setting a mileage goal for the month. Just want to heal my shins and knees.
But I really want to achieve my yearly goal of running 2019K for the year that I set in January.
8 -
How do I decide what races I run? 5ks, fairly close; relatively small; and one per month from April to October (if I can).4
-
I'm a regular in the 100-mile club Completing that goal in December will also get me over 2019 KM for the year.3
-
How do I pick races?
1. What options are available in my city or close-by? Do they fit my crazy schedule?
2. If I have vacation time or am traveling, I search for races wherever I'm going (or decide where I'm going based on where the races are). I try to get as much info as possible, from websites, etc.
3. Are there certain "challenges" I want to do? (Like next year there's a "half marathon crown" I can go for by completing 5 of 7 half marathons within our region during the year. I'm going to try to fit this into my plans for the year, as soon as they all release the race dates, that is.) This may limit how many other races I can do.
4. Are friends doing races somewhere that I can join in on? MFP Europe meet-up anyone???5 -
Thanks for setting us up @katharmonic!
I am in for 100 miles for December. Last month I set my goal lower thinking that between the weather and the holidays I would not get as many miles but I ended up with over 100 so I am going to just go for it this month.
Re: the monthly question. I pick races that are close enough that I can drive there the morning of the race. Maybe someday I will travel for a race, but for now I just stick close to home.6 -
Hi! I'm new and this challenge looks just what I'm looking for. I'm not currently a runner though I used to be before kids. I have a significant amount of weight to lose so I'm going to just walk for this month. I don't want to injure myself. I plan to walk a minimum of 1 mile per day and hopefully many days will be longer. But at least 1 mile. I'd like to incorporate running in the not to distant future once I build up my strength and stamina.
I would like to run longer distances once I trim down. My tentative goal is to run the Cocoa Beach half marathon.19 -

December goal: reincorporate running, continue strength training, avoid reinjury.
I’m not setting a mileage goal for December. My hamstring seems to be healing nicely. I considered going to Parkrun to walk this morning but would have been caught up in the excitement and might have run further and faster than my body is ready for. I may end up going to the local park later today or tomorrow to give my legs a gentle test on a short slow jog.8 -

New to this group. Old, fat guy. Returning to running after a long time off. Starting slow and building a solid base. Goal: 80K in December.

Monthly question?
Gifts, what cool stuff are you getting with the sales?
And of course...
Where have you been this year and where are you going in the next?2 -
New to the group. I am an on again / off again runner. Have completed 6 marathons but that was over 8 years ago. Started back today on C25K with goal of a 5K in late Jan/early Feb. Also have 25 pounds to lose.12

I do hate to be rude and answer my own post first... but due to the lack of running participation I lack opportunity for sharing.
Gifts?
I got a laptop since mine went poopoo and I took dh’s. He was slightly inconvenienced and got me a new one. Other than that, books and school stuff anticipating nursing school. I sense that dh is restless today, I could entice him to shop. If I only needed anything.
Where have I been? Ugh
Well I suppose optimistically its been a recovering year. I haven’t run since January. Well, I did a MobyCarp trot the other day and am still regretting that decision.
Where am I going?
Huh. The road seems long. Dh doesn’t think I’ll ever run again. Perhaps so. 2019 has been an interesting year physically, scholastically, and career-wise or lack of one now. Where I’m going this next year seems to have many forks. We are continuing into the unknown. In a superstitious way, I’m hoping 20/20 is where I see it all come together and my future becomes a little clearer.
In a year I’d like to have:
... returned to regular exercise (bike or walking/running)
... lost the 7 pounds I’ve gained
... found myself a little. Have clear direction in my life.
Oh and continue to learn the violin!12 -
Monthly question?
Gifts, what cool stuff are you getting with the sales?
And of course...
Where have you been this year and where are you going in the next?
Gifts: This year, I bought myself a Garmin Fenix 5. I just received it yesterday. Of course, I spend much more than that cost on race entry fees, travel for races, shoes, etc. I also bought a subscription to the RunAsOne program for training. I had a free package with the Fenix 3 HR, but that required manual downloads because the older Garmin just didn't support the app. Now that there is no inconvenience of downloading the workouts manually, I am going to be trying it out.
Where I have been this year:
Jan. - As with many prior years, I figured I would use the off season to try cut back on running and quickly lose fat. I can't seem to lose weight and run simultaneously because mileage = hanger. So I started back running about the 3rd week of Jan. and kept at it until Mar.
Mar. - I had a bit of an issue and ended up in the ER one night, then had my gall bladder removed. It was apparently very badly infected, but fortunately did not rupture. I was fortunate to have a surgeon who was really good and she is also a runner, so she understood the importance of minimizing downtime. I just had a few holes and 1 larger incision, but didn't have to be totally cut open. This made recovery simpler, but was still down from running for almost 2 whole weeks. I had a few races planned in Apr., so I needed to get back before losing too much fitness.
Apr. - Ran Hogeye Marathon 4/6/19 (Springdale, AR), Flint Hills Trail Marathon 4/13/19 (Manhattan, KS), and the Double Chubb 50K 4/20/19 (near St. Louis, MO). Then joined the Marathon Maniacs.
May - Ran Brookings Marathon 5/11/19 (Brooking, SD), and Scheel's Med City Marathon 5/26/19 (Rochester, MN).
June - Ran Revel Rockies Marathon 6/2/19 (near Denver, CO). Later in June, I moved from Iowa to Tennessee for work. I didn't run for about a week while moving and felt like I lost so much fitness again. I used July and Aug. to build back for the fall races.
Sept. - Ran Tupelo Marathon 9/1/19 (Tupelo, MS) and Air Force Marathon 9/21/19 (Dayton, OH).
Oct. - Ran Bank of America Chicago Marathon 10/13/19 (Chicago, IL).
Nov. - Ran Marshall University Marathon 11/3/19 (Huntington, WV) and got a PR! Also ran CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon 11/9/19 (Indianapolis, IN) and Louisville Marathon 11/10/19 (Louisville, KY). After the double weekend, I started experiencing symptoms of non-insertional achilles tendinitis. I haven't had time to get to a physician yet, nor would it likely make any difference. I'm continuing to treat and try to keep going for the races I've signed up for.
Dec. - I plan to run St. Jude's Memphis Marathon 12/7/19 (Memphis, TN), Rocket City Marathon 12/13/19 (Huntsville, AL), and New Year's Double New Year's Eve 12/31/19 (Allen, TX). I am hoping to get through these despite the current injury.
Where am I going?
Next year, I hope to add more states. Assuming I complete the marathons I have planned, I can potentially make it to Palladium level (level 7) with the Marathon Maniacs by fulfilling this requirement:20 Marathons in 20 different US states, Countries, or Canadian Provinces (any combination) within 365 days
I'm signed up for the following marathons:
Jan. 11 - Charleston Marathon (Charleston, SC)
Jan. 19 - Louisiana Marathon (Baton Rouge, LA)
Feb. 9 - Donna Marathon (Jacksonville, FL)
Mar. 7 - Snickers Marathon (Albany, GA)
Mar. 22 - Yeungling Shamrock Marathon (Virginia Beach, VA)
*If I complete the 3 in Dec. as well as all of the marathons listed above, that gives me 21 marathons (ultras count too) in 21 states in 365 days, which will allow such an upgrade.
Also, since I'm moving again for work sometime next year, I hope to get all the states within driving distance of TN done before that happens. I don't think it will be before Mar. 31, but I don't have an exact date yet. It will likely be in the first half of the year, though. The only state I need to add to make that happen is NC. I would like to do Tobacco Road Marathon in March, but will be working that weekend because our plant has inventory. So I'll hope to find something in NC before I need to move again.
I'm always signing up for all the lotteries for races like world majors, MCM, Leadville... if I get drawn for one of those, I'll add them to my list. For now, my races for next year I'm only looking at the first few months and trying to get all the nearby states done during that time. After I know when and where I'm moving, I'll look for races in states in that area, but that is not on the front of my mind right now.10 -
I need 286.5 miles for December 2019 to reach 6000 miles for the year11
-
@T1DCarnivoreRunner WOW!2
-
No mileage goal for Dec., so not even going to make a ticker. My goal is to finish the 3 marathons I have signed up for within the cut-off times and to be in good enough shape to continue racing in 2020 for everything I have signed up for.9

@Scott6255 hope your shins and knees feel better this month and you can make your goal.
Welcome @Christine4695, @greeneggs_and_sam, and @dmfaler!
Good luck with your incredible goals @T1DCarnivoreRunner and @AlphaHowls!
Monthly questions:
Picking races - what's local that everyone likes doing, what's a place I want to go or a challenge I want to take on (like the double half marathon). More often than not I'm talked into doing things my friends are doing
Gifts - I bought myself a Spartan 3-race pass yesterday so that's my gift to myself. And now it's time to stop spending money.
Where have I been and where am I going? - this year turned into much more of a journey than I expected. I pushed myself in so many new ways, and got a lot stronger (but not faster, to my dismay). I was burned out and struggled with the mental game of road races, but really got into the fun and challenge of Spartan races. I don't know exactly where I'm going from here but my main focus is on continuing to get stronger and have more endurance. I am not signed up for any races in 2020 yet other than a Resolution Run on January 1st. I want to see what I really want to do vs. feeling like I wish I hadn't committed to something when it comes up. I also see myself doing more hiking and rock climbing so I want time to pursue those things.4 -
Monthly question?
Where have you been this year and where are you going in the next?
Am going to ignore the other monthly question since I dont race. But this one gives you pause for thought.
Jan - I am going to start losing weight, this time. I'll stop drinking. Then I'll run again.
April - Well that went poorly. Things looking quite bleak in many ways. Next day a walk 5km because I didnt think I'd make 1min/1min intervals.
November - Bit disappointed with run 78 of the year. Weekend getting up early to run 11km and at work googling half marathons in North of England.
Next year - I will go race, I wil, I will, I will (I probably wont)6 -
I’m in for 50 miles this month with a stretch goal of 60. My secondary goal is to enjoy running and not stress out over fitting it in with the holidays - last year I ran St Jude Marathon 5k in December and it was just one more thing during a month when everyone wanted me to do something, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have, even though we had a great race. This year we have nothing planned except for the night time Buffaglo Fun Run through the holiday lights at Shelby Farms.
How do I pick races? I try to pick races which will help keep me excited about running, either by offering new challenges or other new experiences, plus a couple of old friends which have sentimental value, for example the West Cancer Clinic Run which is our runniversary race. This relates to @Elise4270 ‘s question about where we have been this year. New experiences in 2019: ran my first trail race, first race series, first 10k, first set time race, and first ultra (did 50k at the 24 hr timed race.) after doing 10k on trails, I had hoped to run a sub 1 hr 10k on roads and had done it in practice but then was injured and ended up dropping to the 5k. That’s still on my goals list for next year. Where I hope to be next year is still finding new and exciting ways to run!
Gifts? I tried the Brooks Adrenaline 20s at packet pickup and like them. Gonna get them from REI in case they don’t work for me. The 18 is my current shoe and the 19 I hated. I also need an organizer for my makeup. I got a subscription makeup bag and now I have too much stuff to keep track of.4 -
I'm going to go for 30 miles this month.
How to I chose races? Usually they are ones I have done before and repeat. However, being new in the area, I look for those in my running capabilities and close to where I am, and that do not cost a lot, either. I also look for ones that will challenge, such as a few years ago, I rendomly decided to challange myself to the Hot Chocolate 15K for my birthday, despite the fact I've never run more than 5K's before. In 2020, I'm thinking about doing the "Gopher to Badger Half Marathon" in August.
Where have I been this year & where am I going? This year I moved from Florida back to Wisconsin. I went from being "in control" to being out of control, to finding a balance again. Where I'm going, I don't know, I'm figuring that out as I go, but I have some plans and am challenging myself.9 -
December Running Goal: 50 Miles
Where am I going/Where have I been?
Spent the past few months trying to build up my running base/endurance. In a week, I will have run my first official 5K. Woot!
In January I plan to go to my local Fleet Feet to start training for a spring HM, then continue to train/race at the HM level at least through the end of 2020. I have a planned break of three weeks coming up in May, when I'll be on vacation. In December 2020 I'll see if I want to go any distances longer than a HM.
Also, sometime next year I want to learn to row properly and have that as a cross training exercise.

So I have no idea really... well...
I always run our hometown marathon. The Pittsburgh Marathon, though in 2021 I will probably only do the 1/2.
I have 2 big trail races I like to hit each year, both 50ks. The Glacier Ridge Trail and Hell Have No Hurry. I just LOVE the trail running culture (sorry fellow road runners, it is just not the same!) - so even though I do almost all my running on roads, I try to make at least those two races.
This year (2019) was the first year the fall 10 miler was on a Saturday, if they keep that up, I will add that as one of our regular Fall races. I would like to find a nice 1/2 marathon to 30k race to add into the fall, but not found one yet.
Outside of that, it is as catch can. I like to keep my drive less than an hour, and I like to try and control costs. So races that are alike $150 per are straight out. I like the 10 -15 mile range most for races, and if I can find trail races I prefer them, but really it is just "Oh look! That race is shiny! Let's go!"
In 2020 though everything is up in the air as I will be making my first serious attempt at a BQ sometime in the Fall. We shall see how that goes!5
