December is supposed to be easy runs with some "fast finish" mixed in. So sticking between 9-10 was okay, if a touch slow. So, basically, to be on plan, I just have to reverse the splits before letting my coach see them.quilteryoyo wrote: »I hit a huge deer (6 or 8 point buck) on my way to work this morning. It appeared out of nowhere and I was hitting it before I really registered what it was. It limped off, but I fear it was hurt pretty badly. My car remained driveable, so I drove on to work before reporting it to the authorities and my insurance company. The insurance was great. The adjuster called about an hour later and I took the car to a shop to get an estimate during my lunch break. (Almost $3200 damage!) Fortunately, I decided to get comprehensive coverage last Jan, so I won't have any out of pocket expenses and I can use my dad's car while the repairs are done. Hopefully, it will get repaired within the next couple of weeks. I'm blessed.
Glad you are okay!

I follow this guy on Instagram as he has the most beautiful running style and is an absolute joy to watch. Anyway, he’s based in Sweden and just posted this clip of him running on an icy track, which made me think of all of you running in the frozen north at the moment. Worth a watch regardless of his skill in the ice!

Feeling super tired but managed my 2 mile run on the treadmill. Strength training is once again pushed off
@quilteryoyo Sorry about your accident! We hit a small buck 2 years ago on Nov 30 and insurance totaled our car.4 -
Tracking this only so I can finish the year. I’m heading in to hospital on Friday for surgery to reduce my risk of breast cancer. Double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction - will be unable to run for around 12 weeks they say. Going to see if I can squeeze in one more run and two gym classes before I go. Maybe 15miles for December - we shall see...
I’m not sure if I will stay on here while I’m recovering. Think I might get too sad about not being able to join in! But, then again, I will have plenty of time on my hands for reading... wish you all a fabulous month x

My heart goes out to you because I am facing my own issues of this nature. I truly, honestly wish they'd just cut my left breast off and as harsh as that sounds, I mean it. I would not wish my anxiety on anyone. You will be back better and stronger. Peace and love to you...12 -

SMH - hurt your foot, started running slower, yet it is still faster than my current pace times! Hope your foot is feeling better soon, @PastorVincent !3 -
PastorVincent wrote: »Oh and @PastorVincent what's that light vest thingy you were plugging? I may have accidentally bought one. Free delivery to nz, couldn't say no. Guess I'll definitely be running in winter now!
Oh no! Now someone will offer you beads for it!
Bahaha but are they magic? Eta yep I saw the story last month, I know we're beads not beans, but I could always hope.1 -

Makes me nervous just watching it. But the same weather is coming my way. At least it forces me to slow down a bit. Sometimes I do "ice fartleks", where I go fast on clear spots and slow down for icy spots. I still much prefer summer though.3 -
December Goal: 250km
02/12: 8.23
03/12: 8.53
Total KM run: 16.76
My main goal for December is to finish my NYE marathon strong and still smiling!
@ContraryMaryMary Way to smash out a race especially when you're not 100%! Those post race treats look delicious
@Faebert Best wishes for your upcoming surgery and a speedy recovery
@quilteryoyo Thankfully you're OK after the deer vs car incident, that must have given you a fright!
Re: Picking races - I generally choose races within a radius of less than 2 hours travel time, but I'll go anywhere for a full (picking a full comes down to timing and appeal rather than location) New Zealand is pretty small so that gives me a fair few locations to pick from without having to go too far:)4 -
Stay strong @Faebert and @LoveyChar - you know know we will all be wishing nothing but the best for for you
They can be tricky little blighters @quilteryoyo and at least it is only bent plastic and metal. The deer are pretty tough, one ran out in front of my SO driving home a few years ago. We live near a forest where the deer are tracked so they know which deer it was, found it and the gave it some treatment but it would actually have been okay without it. Over $3k damage to the car and we still have to pay extra on this insurance premiums years later!2 -

The first rule of running: Never compare yourself to another runner. No good will come from that. Learn from others, sure, but do not hold yourself to an impossible standard like performing with a body you do not have.

He runs using the gazelle technique. I use the glider technique, most of the time. So I would look nothing like that.2 -

If not, then maybe the forth. It took me a long time to get into the habit too. Make sure you set REALISTIC goals and targets for your body and lifestyle.
For me getting a subscription to Audible and only listening to audiobooks while I am running helps. If I want to know what happens next, I have to get out and run. So the book became the carrot that got me out the door. Over time the habit holds, but different people need different carrots to get there.
Find your carrot and use it.5 -
I think this is my running technique6
-
@quilteryoyo glad you are OK. Hope somehow the deer is OK too 😥
@PastorVincent hope your foot isn't hurt too bad.2 -
Ugh, I stink at posting consistently on here. I am going to try to work on that.
I am going for 100 miles this month. I am training for March’s marathon, plus I am doing a challenge with a local group to get in at least 1 mile of running or walking each day from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. On strength training days, my plan is to walk at least 1 mile after I do weights.3 -

Regular old run this morning on regular old route. Not much to report. It was somewhere around 4 degrees and sunny, so I was rather warm in tights, fleece shirt and thick gloves. Still, pretty solid throughout. I got some hunger pangs around 3km and was worried it might turn into a rerun of last Sunday's long run, but they soon subsided and I felt fine until they resurfaced at 10km, and by then I was nearly done.
Still, maybe I should eat something before morning runs longer than 10km.
@Faebert good luck! Sending positive vibes your way.
@LoveyChar @PastorVincent I also go the audiobook route. Currently using "A Short History of Nearly Everything" to get me through my long runs. 18 hours of poking fun at scientists and human race in general! Great fun.3 -

Wow. I can not imagine that!
Some people do hang around while they recover (right @Elise4270 ?) Others fade away. I would encourage you to try and stay. A habit broken is twice as hard to reform I think.
totally agreed. i've fallen off and i've had a very hard time getting back in the habit
glad you're ok @quilteryoyo
i love the gazelle style, i'm a glider too. i wish i was a gazelle. @ContraryMaryMary @PastorVincent2 -
Cross training day today. Plan to head to a lower body weight class and if time permits a “healthy back” class at lunch.
@Faebert – Wishing you all the best for your surgery and a speedy recovery! Even if you don’t keep up with this forum, please pop on whenever you can and let us know how you are doing.
@PastorVincent – Hope you didn’t injury your foot too bad!
@quilteryoyo – Glad you weren’t injured! Those deer can wreak so much havoc.
@ContraryMaryMary – That guy’s footing is amazing! I would definitely fall and hurt something!

greenolivetree wrote: »@Elise4270 Thank you for your thoughts and I know you understand the adult kid struggles. But yes, he is still very young at not even 20. Good news is my father-in-law has helped this morning with the DMV and court stuff to get him all paid up and license reinstated. So now he just needs his car fixed and not having to be his transportation will be a huge help. So as long as we can all get along and not yell at each other I think I can get through this!
I took a complete rest day yesterday - didn't even so much as walk my dogs. It's been a long time since I had that sedentary of a day.
So today will be first run of the month and I'll run 2 on the treadmill if all goes as planned. I really need to strength train as well.
WELCOME to the group @christine4695 @dmfaler @coolblackcat (welcome back) @UTMBdreams
Thanks @greenolivetree!1 -
i love the gazelle style, i'm a glider too. i wish i was a gazelle. @ContraryMaryMary @PastorVincent
IMO:
One is not better than the other.
Gliding is more efficient for long runs. Gazelle is geared more towards shorter faster runs. I actually switch to gazelle when I am doing a hard final kick, a mile race, or etc.
Of course, there are people that can use either to do either, but I am talking about us mere mortals, not the elites.4 -

December Goal: 100 Miles
12/1: 10.05 miles
12/3: 6.25 miles
16.3/100 miles completed
Today's run was a chilly 6.25 miles. It was a good run. It was a little windy and seemed colder than my weather app showed it to be, but I warmed up pretty good as I went. I am getting better at running in the cold although I really prefer the 50's or even the low 60's. I can't imagine running on the ice. I've never run in snow or ice. Luckily for me we don't get a lot of wintry precipitation. I've been running for 3 years and so far I haven't had an opportunity to run in the snow. This morning was really nice. It was clear and there were lots of stars out. I saw a raccoon. He was fixing to cross the street, but he saw me coming and turned around and ran off. Maybe it was because I was wearing my light up vest and decided to try the blinking lights today. For those of you who use them, do you wear yours on a steady color, or do you use the blinking feature? I'm kind of wondering which is most effective. I was a little worried that I would find the blinking annoying, but I didn't really notice it too much.
@quilteryoyo I'm glad y'all are ok and your car will be too. My brother-in-law hit a deer a couple of weeks ago and it totaled their Escalade. They can really cause a lot of damage. No one was hurt, but the deer didn't make it.

Yes, there’s a lot to be said for gliding but gazelle is prettier to watch. Now me, I have perfected the nana trot.
Interestingly, when I run I often picture this guy running in my head and my speed picks up by 4-5 seconds without any perceived extra effort. I’m possibly just relaxing and holding my body in a better position, which is enough to increase my stride.5 -

There is a lot that can be said for focus, and that is what you are describing. So it does not surprise me. I personally am always faster when I focus which is why I rarely listen to an audiobook/music/etc in a RACE. Only in training.3 -
I listen to nothing, always, except traffic passing by (not even that really). I own nothing other than a phone and I could download music to it but I don't know how to, so I'd have to learn. When I run, I think alot about my goals and dreams and my kids.
Dec. 1st- 12.4
Dec. 2nd- 3.5
Dec. 3rd - 3.2
19.1 miles so far, I'm on a roll so far and I need to stay on it. I fell off the last two months.

Is the nana trot like the senior shuffle? I had that one down when my tendon was hurting!2 -

I personally do the mastadon meander. Very effective for a fossil like me.6
