The first rule of running: Never compare yourself to another runner. No good will come from that. Learn from others, sure, but do not hold yourself to an impossible standard like performing with a body you do not have.
Oh, I don't. The only one I compare myself to is myself. I was laughing about it, same as when I see people post on IG "oh, I had such a slow run, I was 9-something...blah blah blah!" I was in the low 12's before I had my foot surgeries & now I am a card carrying member of the Slow As Molasses In January Running Up An Ice Hill Group.
I had to go back to a run/walk, but only allow myself a minute walk. Usually my run paces are decent, but the walk inbetween is killing it. But my knees are acting up, doctor and I think arthritis, (had issues with my left knee since before I was a teenager) plus I've run on Florida flat roads since I started, so I'm really not used to running up & down hills, and my 50 year old knees (ok, 51 in 2 weeks) are protesting.
I am being hard on myself, just trying not to be. I *know* running is up one day, down another, but it's hard when I want to be back running like I used to be (in the 12's), not accepting that I have to be where I am now (in the 13 - 14's).
Sorry, didn't mean to sound all pissy, just airing some frustrations. And I don't PLAN to stop running, or shuffling, or..whatever some people may call it.9 -
Thanks to everyone who commented on my run in with the deer. It's nice to have people who care if you are okay or not. @kgirlhart I'm glad your family is okay after their accident. Deer can really be dangerous. There seem to be a lot more out and about this year than usual.
As far as a style of running goes, I think I am more of the snail glider type. LOL
I did most of my November runs on the treadmill, due to the time/weather/mental inclination/slick leaves on the driveway, etc. Since I have a race on Saturday (not on a treadmill), I intended to run outside today. But, it was down right cold and there are still quite a few leaves on the driveway. So, another treadmill run it was. This time, I watched an episode of Highway to Heaven. I did pick up the pace a bit for today's run, just to see how I'd do. I managed to have a 10:54/mile pace. Better than most. I think I could have gone a little bit faster and still not been overly tired at the end. So, unless I let my mind get the best of me, I think I'll do okay in the race.

They can be tricky little blighters @quilteryoyo and at least it is only bent plastic and metal. The deer are pretty tough, one ran out in front of my SO driving home a few years ago. We live near a forest where the deer are tracked so they know which deer it was, found it and the gave it some treatment but it would actually have been okay without it. Over $3k damage to the car and we still have to pay extra on this insurance premiums years later!

Happy Holidays, everyone.
I am kind of in a mental fog and just not able to make myself run or do any exercise. I know that I feel significantly better after a run. Not sure, why I am not able to get passed it.
I still have to finish out November but my miles were logged on fitbit and the app is down. Ed, my husband, thinks that it crashed due to cyber Monday. I will finish out November some time this week.
That being said, I am in for 40 miles this month, taking into account Christmas and New Year holidays.
On another topic, when we were at my mother's house (she is 91 years old), I noticed that her TV is very old, and was having trouble with her satellite system. We think that part of the problem is the age of the TV. We actually won a new TV last year in a raffle...it is being stored in case we need it. I told my husband that I wanted to buy my mother a new TV and he told me that she could have the stored TV. He told me that she will never accept it...that she will say her TV is good enough, even though it would be a high definition TV and free. (My mother is tight with the dollar). I told my husband that I would pay off one of his credit cards if he was right. Stay tuned to which one knows my mother best.

Lol at all the running styles.
I'm a heffalump... And I'll let you figure that one out bahaha.
Today's training plan was a warm up, with 8 min at race pace, with 4 min recovery x3. I lost track and when was just gearing for a final run at pace when my watch said cool down time! I'd done 3 and lost track bahaha.
So that was 8.2k, giving me a total of 27 so far! Almost half way to my goal of 60 for the first 12 days of the month. Should be on track for 120 for the month provided Christmas doesn't hit too hard.7 -
Evening 5k, felt nice and relaxed doing it, comfortable the whole way through. I nearly did run into a Labrador at the very end.
Working on goals for next year. I am doing my usual thing of creating a massivley complex system of challenges and goals to avoid having a small number of targets that appear in January to be completely unmanageable.
In January I will have either a spreadsheet or a list of 5 things to do.

3 on the treadmill again. Mainly because it's so much easier to pack a bag for that than for all the layers/gear for running outside after dark. I did my 5 pull-ups and 30 burpees while I was at the gym as well.
My question - why do burpees never get easier? I'm thinking of getting this shirt:

@TheMrWobbly Glad your family wasn't hurt from your deer collision. It's also good to know that someone treated the deer and it was okay. I am hoping that my insurance premiums don't go up, but they may if I lose my "Accident Free" discount. Isn't it sneaky how they say your premiums won't increase due to an accident, which they don't on paper, but you lose a discount, so they actually do. We'll see. I'm pretty sure I am forgiven for one accident a year....or some period of time. Perhaps I should look that up so I'm not horribly surprised when I get my next bill.1

@quilteryoyo I am really glad to hear you are ok after the accident. Deer can definitely do a lot of damage. I’m sure it was frightening.
Injury update - I didn’t run this weekend. I got nervous about doing too much too soon and just continued walking and strength training. If all goes well I plan to ease back into jogging tomorrow after work. The current plan is to walk/jog 5/1 intervals for a total of 3 miles with one of my friends from the running class I took. I am definitely feeling stronger each day but am frustrated after 4 weeks without a run.

Monthly questions:
Races - I do local 5 and 10Ks and did a bunch of HMs with a friend when I was starting out. I found a fun HM in San Diego that was my 1st solo race and since have picked out races in locations that look awesome to run some local and some not (across the GG bridge, along the coast in La Jolla, wine country in Santa Barbara, etc.).
Gifts, what cool stuff are you getting with the sales? I am not much of a Black Friday sales shopper unless there is something I really need. I did buy some running leggings on Women Led Business day from a company I had never heard of previously. I went back and bought more on Black Friday because I love the leggings so much. I think @quilteryoyo also posted the referral link if anyone is interested

Where have you been this year and where are you going in the next?
I looked back at my posted goals at the end of last year. I wanted to be healed and healthy and back to running my normal amount and distances. Maybe see some time improvements too.
My stress fracture is healed and I am back to running my normal distances for the most part and completed 3 HMs. I have not seen any time improvements but I feel that I am improving slowly. I am having some issues with my knee and am being proactive to get it addressed before it gets to be a bigger issue.
In the next year I am backing off from racing HMs to give my body a chance to really get stronger and focusing on improving my form and getting faster.

@quilteryoyo I missed your post about the deer earlier! Kept seeing other people talk about it so had to go back and find it. I’m glad you’re okay and hope your insurance rates don’t take a hit. I used to date a guy who lived near Waco and they called the highway near there “dead deer road.” It was crazy, a deer on the side of the road every hundred yards or so. And of course I hit one while driving his truck. Not the best way to impress a Texan, wreck his truck!
As I understand it, November is peak rutting season in Tennessee, which is why the deer seem to be all over the place right now.
My husband and I got in 5k at Shelby Farms. For once the wind was calm so we ran around the lake. Tried to go a little faster than easy since it was a short run. Then went and got a tree. All the real trees are either tiny or very high priced this year, apparently during and immediately after the recession no one planted trees and it’s just now catching up with the market. But it’s okay, we have a small space for our tree at the moment, since my squat rack is taking up where the tree usually goes.2 -

@rheddmobile Is that why you USED to date the guy? I do think it is the rutting season that is making them be out and about more and apparently not being very aware of their surroundings. I guess they have a one track mind during this time of year. Sounds like you had a nice run around the lake. Glad you found an appropriately sized tree.
I had my day all planned out, as I was supposed to be home all day - for once in a long while. But, just found out they need me at daycare this afternoon, so I agreed to go in. I could have said "no," but really hate to if I don't have something really pressing planned. So, I'll put my short run off until after I get home and hope I don't talk myself out of it. LOL

did 2 miles with speed demon. i thought we were going faster but apparently not so much. i did lose a couple of min because there was a dog with no leash on the way back. i wasn't sure if it belonged to the house it was standing by and i wanted to look at his tags. ended up he belonged to the house.
speed demon was still kinda anxious. i'm hoping to take her out again before our race on saturday.

@emmamcgarity – I know you are so ready to get back to running but it’s important for you to be 100% healed first so listen to your body when you start back and be gentle with yourself! It’s ok to abort the run if the pain is still there.
@shanaber – I ordered a pair of capris from Handful. I love the ones from Gypsy Runner because of the pockets but they are so expensive. I hope I like these just as much!

Did we not do a Goals and Accomplishments summary last year? I looked back at dec 2018 to see if i could find a where ya been, where ya going, what did you do, what will you do. But I didn't find it. to be fair i'm not awake yet.
It is nice to go back and actually look at your own words a year or two ago, see how you've come along. So before the end of the months be sure to put some loose goals together.

I've decided to withdraw from this challenge since I'm having so many issues accessing it on MFP. 3 out of 4 times, I get a blank page, and it takes too many tries (and too much time) to get on here. Wishing everyone the best.13

@UTMBdreams Sorry about that! I know MFP has been having a ton of issues, I know I can no longer seem to use my phone app, which sucks as I used it ALL the time. It no longer synchs with the laptop. I just use my laptop to access MFP.

Cloudy (again). Mid 30s F (again). Light sleet mixed with snow (better than drizzle). Caught some kind of bug Monday night, but was better by this morning. Saw a small flock of snow geese - first ones of the fall.

Got my long run done for the week. It was about 23k of cold, but other than one windy section, it wasn't as bad as I worried it would be. I guess I picked the right clothing. I took it easy and was slow enough for MFP to claim I was "jogging in place", as usual. It was a good run, with some new-to-me roads in my route, but it felt really long.
Then we took the kids ice skating (instead of swimming - my membership card can be used both places) and made it through 45 minutes of slowly following my youngest around, while dodging groups of selfie-taking teenagers. Ugggh. The rink was almost to capacity with groups today, and the lady working the desk even asked if I was sure I wanted to take my kids in there. Next time I'll swim and the kids can pick - either ice skate with Daddy watching from the coffee shop, or swim with me.

Snowed today, but it was the big fluffy flakes that melt almost instantly on the ground. Being on the 7th floor I could watch the updrafts carry the snow up instead of down. So that was neat. Lots of meetings at work so watching the snow has been the highlight of my day so far12

I ran six miles this morning. It was a really nice run, but it seemed cold. The temp was 39°F and there was no wind, so the "feels like" was also 39°, but it just felt cold to me. I think it was because my hands were really cold and numb. I was actually dressed really well in capri tights and a t-shirt and sleeves and gloves. It was just my hands that were cold and my arms were a little chilly. I think I would have been overly warm if I had worn a jacket. It was a pretty run though. Lots of stars were out when I started and the sky was starting to get light as I got home and it was just a lovely run. I tried practicing my snot rockets since my fingers were so numb I had a hard time getting my hanky in and out of my flipbelt. I'm not very good at snot rockets and truthfully I prefer a hanky or at least gloves will work in a pinch.

Don't leave just because the MFP app is bad at viewing the Community.
I never use MFP to access this thread. Just use your browser. The link is here

I knew I would not be able to find it or remember what I had said so I copied it into OneNote where I knew I could find it again. I have searched through December 2018 and January 2019 threads and could not find where it was actually asked. Maybe this year I will copy off the link to it too
I did come across a post that made me sad... MobyCarp and I were both born in December and were the same age 😢

Been following this new adaptive algorithm for training and no runs this week until Sat. for marathon. Frustrated. When I figure my free time could be spent running.
OTOH, someone spent time trying to figure out how to take the caffeine out of coffee. My time is not wasted not that badly.5 -
Did almost 7 miles today (6.91) Don't ask me why I didn't just make it 7 lol. Guess I was just wanting to get home..
Getting used to running in the cold (for me). Finally have figured out the right gear to wear to start at least (the gloves and hat do come of half way through).
@quilteryoyo Read about your deer incident! Sorry to hear, glad you were ok.
