Yeah, me too. I went vegan several years ago for the ethical issues. I reached my heaviest whilst vegan....I think it's because it's easier to eat a LOT when it's all plant based due to lower satiety. I have recently started eating fish on some days and I really notice the different in how much I feel I need to eat on these days.
The satiety thing is highly individual. Some people actually experience increased satiety when they eat more plant foods, especially if it results in them consuming higher fiber or more volume and these are filling for them. It's actually not uncommon for *some* people to report that they have trouble eating enough to maintain their body weight when they switch to veganism, which is part of the reason why we have the stereotype of the "skinny vegan." There really is no one-size-fits-all path to satiety.5 -

What % is your protein goal and how well do you hit it?
I'm an omnivore who spent three years at vegetarian or mostly plant based yoga centers and if I wasn't careful to get lots of higher protein foods like legumes, seitan, or tempeh I would certainly feel like something was missing and want meat.
Also, I could eat a ton of foods like pasta or bread and olive oil and not feel satisfied, but I do find foods like rice & beans, veggies, and fruit quite filling.0 -

I think you misunderstand Veganism. There’s more to it than just no animal products, especially if you need to lose weight.
An important factor in vegan weight loss is calorie density. A cup of beans and a cup of tomatoes will have very different calorie totals. So in order to get 100 calories of tomatoes, you get to eat a LOT more, which leads to SATIETY. Not feeling like you’re starving is a huge helper in keeping going with a caloric deficit.

That being said- I am still struggling. I am in the caloric deficit recommended by every weight loss calorie calculator I could find, and yet the weight is not coming off. So the oft touted “calorie deficit for weight loss” is not my experience.
Advice from Vegans (especially WFPB ones) would be gratefully accepted.

People think they’re going to lose weight just by being vegan. Oreos are vegan. You can gain weight with any kind of food if you eat too much!4

I'm sorry to hear that you have gained weight. I've been vegetarian for almost two years now and much as it pains me to admit it, I have found nothing as satiating as low-fat animal protein. That being said, I'm never going back to eating meat or seafood so I've turned to protein powder and protein bars for help. I've been dieting on and off for twenty years and the number one thing that helps me in terms of weight loss though: is to make the effort to weigh, measure and track every single calorie I consume. Otherwise it's just too easy to underestimate calories and then I lose no weight or I gain weight! No thanks! IMO, tracking accurately is definitely worth making the effort to do3

Being full does not equate to satiety - there are many foods I can eat to point of physical discomfort and I will still be looking for more food because foods like rice and plain pasta, to name two examples, fill me up but ALWAYS leave me looking for something else.7 -

You have to watch it now there are many vegan treats! I’d avoid these and lots of breads if you consume a lot of those. Focus on your natural foods fruit and veg and less on prepackaged dinners etc. make your own stuff. I made vegan Parmesan and mayo. Watch to not eat too much fruit and nuts as high is sugar/fats so easy to over eat them. Ok look into berries less sugar. Look at portions too. And possibly carbs of veggies you eat bc you maybe eating a ton of carbs without realizing. I just must watch the calories. I think maybe whatever you consume may just be over your calories to lose. I ate vegan meals for a few months but I couldn’t sustain that level of limitation although it was pretty yummy!1

Some wines are vegan. Eggs and/or fish aren't essential to the processing, they're just used by some wines.

Vegan is a lifestyle, not a diet. It doesn't have anything to do with dieting or health. Veganism is too not partaking of anything in any form that has come from animals or been negatively effected with it to the best of your ability. Food, clothing, make up, household products, etc. What you're eating is called a 'junk food vegan diet.'
Plant based is the health and dietary aspect of it. Eating a plant based lifestyle is eating nutrient dense variety of food for health and weight loss. I eat a whole food plant based vegan lifestyle. I typically lose two to three pounds a week.3 -

You're losing two to three pounds a week because you're in a deficit. Vegans, including WFPB vegans, lose weight the same way everyone does, through a deficit. OP gained weight because she was consuming more calories than her body was using.14 -
It doesn't surprise me, 2 of the largest people i know are long term vegan. Plant based doesnt mean you'll naturally eat less calories, in fact a lot of vegans eschew vegetables in favour of bulky carbs. One vegan friend practically lives on bread and pasta and another of my vegan friends is a baker, he makes the most incredible vegan cakes but the portions are massive. Calories are calories and people cutting out a food source such as meat or fish replace it with bulk from another source. That source will not necessarily be healthier or lower in calories.

It doesn't surprise me, 2 of the largest people i know are long term vegan. Plant based doesnt mean you'll naturally eat less calories, in fact a lot of vegans eschew vegetables in favour of bulky carbs. One vegan friend practically lives on bread and pasta and another of my vegan friends is a baker, he makes the most incredible vegan cakes but the portions are massive. Calories are calories and people cutting out a food source such as meat or fish replace it with bulk from another source. That source will not necessarily be healthier or lower in calories.

Lots of people *period* don't eat many vegetables. It's a very common post topic here, non-vegans asking how they can lose weight without eating vegetables or asking how they can learn to like vegetables.4 -

You can easily eat a bunch of bulky carbs and lose weight though as long as you fit them into your calorie goals. 🤷🏻♀️
The truth is that although vegans can be overweight and veganism doesn't magically create weight loss, at least one large study has shown that vegans have a lower mean BMI than non-vegans. Carbohydrates clearly aren't the problem.

1) vegan food on the whole tends to be lower in calories than non vegan foods
2) vegans tend to be more health concious and active as a demographic and this correlates to lower BMI
3) a combination of the above
4) neither of the above, something else?

During my three years living at yoga retreat centers I met hundreds of vegans who were at healthy weight BMIs and was good friends with a handful of them. This experience makes me say # 3.
Many of these people were fans of athletic styles of yoga. The Jivan Mukti founders used to hold retreats at one of these yoga centers. I also met quite a few practitioners of Ashtanga. (If you are not familiar with these terms think "Power Yoga.")
During this time, no one said they were eating vegan for weight loss - anyone who mentioned a reason was an ethical vegan.1 -
It is also possible that those that visit yoga retreat centres are generally more health conscious as I know as many overweight vegans/vegetarians as I know mixed diet eaters.1

We'd just be talking about my guesses here, as unfortunately I don't think anybody has studied this particular question.
I do not agree that vegan food on the whole is lower in calories than non-vegan foods, but an analysis of about forty studies has shown that vegans tend to consume fewer calories than non-vegans, which appears to be what accounts for the different (https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0209086). Some of us are probably doing this deliberately to control their weight (like me), while others may find plant foods satisfying enough that they wind up eating less overall (lucky!). I do think that the vegan community includes a LOT of people who were either already health conscious and active or became more so after becoming vegan.
In other words, I think I'd agree with you -- if we ever find out the real answer, I think it would be a combination of the first two factors. I do know of many people who either lost weight when they went vegan or found that their weight sort of "automatically" stabilized once they went vegan. When you look at the diets that tend to promote satiety without conscious calorie limiting, a diet that is high fiber and high volume is one that is frequently cited and vegan meals can fall into this pattern. Of course, not EVERY vegan diet falls into this pattern and not everyone finds this type of diet high satiety.

I think (3) -- mostly (2), but being vegan also makes a lot of impulse eating more difficult, as random snacks in an office breakroom (for one example) would be likely to be non vegan in many cases. Simply having to think more about a food item before eating it is a constraint that for many would likely help control cals (even if not counting, as most don't).3 -

Anecdotally, I can absolutely attest to this. You're not eating the random birthday cake, cookies, or pizza at the office (unless you work with other vegans). Unless you're in a very vegan-friendly environment, it just removes a lot of the random food temptation that is thrown at us regularly.
Yes, it can be replaced with other calories. But as someone who ALWAYS ate the birthday cake as a non-vegan, once I stopped eating it, I didn't feel like I had to go get myself some cake every time I didn't have some at the office. It just interrupts that automatic eating and for some of us, that's enough to cut some calories.
(Note: I was still an overweight vegan until I began counting calories, I was just less overweight that I think I would have been as a non-vegan).2
