Meat has nothing to do with putting on weight. Diets don't have anything to do with weight loss/gain. It's all about calories in vs out. Not that complicated.6

If you are gaining weight with a vegan diet I am not surprised. They eat a lot of rice, potatoes and pasta. That is an absolute no no.
Low fat meat protein sources are best. If you eat carbs and sugars you’ll gain weight.1 -

Vegans are exactly like non-vegans, we can choose whether we eat rice, potatoes, and pasta and we can choose how much we eat. They are not obligatory foods for us.
This is like saying that non-vegans will gain weight because they eat a lot of bacon, foie gras, and heavy cream. See how ridiculous that sounds? It's because you know you can choose whether or not you eat those foods and how much of them you will eat at once.20 -

Vegatables and other non meat products contain calories. Thats probably why you gained weight.3

Good on you for trying to reduce animal cruelty and improve your health by eating a plant based diet. Sadly in 2020 with so many vegan choices available - both natural and processed - it can be easy to eat more than you need because it's just so gosh damn tasty.
There is also a school of thought in the vegan world that eating a WFPB diet means that quantity doesn't matter but as many members have correctly stated above - it does.
Take a look at your macros ensuing you've got a decent balance between all macronutrients. And for now, weigh and measure everything - and record it diligently so that you are being completely truthful. Those sips, tastes, licks and extra little bits all add up.
Like all of life changes it takes time to get in to the right grove. Give yourself the time to adjust before giving up on plant based eating.6 -

You have me curious! If you've never gone over 125 lbs... a weight I would LOVE to reach, by the way... what brings you to MFP? I can't imagine that I would have ever found the site, much less thought to join, if it weren't for the fact that I needed a solution to losing weight.1 -

I eat rice, potatoes, pasta and candy all the time. I only gain weight (on purpose most of the time) if I'm eating in a surplus. If only it was that easy.8 -

Don't want to derail the thread, but for an answer, I found this website due to hearing about the daily tracking app (on YouTube, I think). But I've only tracked my macros a few times since I get take out quite often to do it consistently. Then found it had the forum, and I like reading some threads.
I guess I'm lucky enough that the level of my hunger/appetite are consistent with my maintenance calories. I've also never been (even as a kid) much into foods that happen to be high calorie (ex:pastries, deep fried foods...), so I guess that makes it easier.5 -

I am not a vegan.
am not even a vegetarian.
But I eat a lot of rice, potatoes, pasta. And carbs and sugars.
Yet I have not gained weight for over 6 years but have maintained at my goal.
Must be magic.
Or calorie control.

An awful lot of good looking vegan dishes have 'hidden' calories to bump up the taste and nutrients. It'll be veg, grain, all good, and then down the ingredients list it'll be "half a cup of tahini" or they'll use a lot of garbanzo or rice flour or something. You have to watch your intake no matter how healthy you are feeling something is.3

Vegan eating is mostly cabs. I would be HUGE if I went vegan. I would think a very strict calorie intake and high energy output is the only way to lose weight no matter what sort of diet you choose. The only problem with vegan, you body has lots of energy source via the food you eat so it doesn't need to go after the fat reserves.0

I gained weight eating mostly vegan too!
Vegan foods are high in calories unless you eat mostly pure veggies, but pure veggies are hard to keep stocked.
I’ve been eating dried foods and saw weight gain too.
Hopefully I can shop for fresh veggies more often soon!0 -

This reminds me of the original "Moosewood Cookbook," which is vegetarian. It has some extremely caloric recipes thanks to copious amounts of calorie dense foods like cheese and cream.
That said, I had no issues with my weight during the three years I lived in vegetarian yoga communities which served a lot of vegan meals.3
