Seriously. We all have those days.

@quilteryoyo You work two jobs, play tennis, travel and run! Maybe it's just that, probably, and hopefully you're not getting sick. Take a breather...good movies and throw your kicks up.
Yeah, you probably just need a break. It is hard to sleep well when you are pushing yourself too hard, paradoxly.

Hey all.
Easy 5k this morning, followed by strength training. Feeling good even after yesterday's unexpected long run, so had to keep myself in check lol. This running thing can be addictive lol.

I got the call yesterday from the doctor re my MRI results – he left a long message. Short version – stress fracture due to “bone insufficiency” in my femur. Will heal in 8 weeks and need to get another bone density scan. I almost feel like he called the wrong person. But I meet with him on Tuesday where I will confirm it all. I do have osteopenia but my scan a year ago showed it had slowed down and I am being really consistent with vitamin D with K, and focusing on weight bearing exercises yada yada.
So….I want to heal properly, prevent future issues and not gain back on my 18 pounds of hard earned weight loss. All without running. A helluva challenge. That will be the focus of my convo on Tuesday. Until then, I guess its slow walking, maybe cycling, maybe elliptical. And a vodka soda with extra lime ! Cheers to the weekend y’all 🍸
I am guessing that they will be canceling the CAP 10K race here in ATX since they just cancelled SXSW. Hopefully just a postponement. I really hope that they don't cancel UT Austin Graduation in May. That will bum me out.

Oh my! I was not expecting stress fracture from what you described. Hopefully he can give you ideas on how to stay active safely. Lots of prayers headed in your direction!
^^^ This! Hope it heals quickly and you can find some sort of exercise you are able to do until it does.
Gosh, that’s probably not what you hoped to hear from the doctor! Hope it heals quickly and well, log those calories and you should be able to keep the weight off. I actually lost more when injured last year since I wasn’t eating a lot after long runs.
So, what does a stress fracture in the femur feel like? Any idea what you were doing right before it started? It’s always good to hear other people’s experiences so I have more of an idea of what to watch out for.1 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »@7lenny7 Kody is adorable! Hope he isn't injured.
I'm not sure how serious it is, but Kody won't be running with me for at least a week, maybe longer. I thought perhaps he got a rock poking into the webbing of his paw but there's a distinct swelling behind what I'd call his front wrist. I can't miss work Monday but I'm hoping my son can take him into the vet.

50% done for this month.
Goal was to finish the races I registered for. Last weekend was the Little Rock Half Marathon (completed) and today was the Snickers Marathon (completed).
Next is Shamrock Marathon in 2 weeks and the Go! St. Louis Half Marathon in 3 weeks. *I work next weekend, so no race.11 -

Hey that is good news, good good news!!! You have a diagnosis, you have a time frame for healing, and you have a plan to facilitate that process!!! Woohoo, and you have a good attitude so good for you! Vicariously, please do live through us until you no longer have to! And enjoy that drink and your weekend, lady ❤️!
Adding: Maybe I interpreted this wrong. I hope I didn't; but if I did, I'm sorry. I hope you heal nicely and get back to working towards your goals. I think you are a very nice lady and I hope great things for you.
Ridiculous, Austin businesses are losing out on so much revenue! And people are losing out on a good time! I hope they don't cancel the race, postponement...uhhhhh...1 -
Race Report: Florence Forth 10K, Durham, NC, USA, 7 March 2020
First, I am so glad y'all are here. I participated much more with this challenge in January but just needed to cut my social media time (in all areas); however, I wanted to come back and tell you about this race.
This was my second race, and my first 10K. My first race was a 5K last December. I have been running since Sept 2019.
I originally signed up for this particular race because the timing would just about coincide with the end of my b210K ZenLabs training. I was calling it pretty tight and am just barely finishing up that app now. (The most I had run before this race was 5.84 miles.) Another reason I wanted to run this race is b/c it is in downtown Durham NC and I can literally walk to the start line in about 10-12 minutes or so, and walk back home when it is done. What I did NOT know: This particular race is the NC state championship 10k for the USATF, whatever that means. It sounds intimidating to me. That fact, and the fact that the cut-off time is 90 minutes instead of 2 hours (like some of the other 10Ks around here) kinda psyched me out.
Woke up very early this morning and fixed myself my first cup of coffee in about a week. That, and my nerves, smacked me wide awake at 6 AM. After taking care of my morning, ahem, routine (another reason to hit the coffee first thing) I took a walk and got to the starting area around 7:20 AM. Lineup was at 7:45. Start was at 8:00 AM.
Fortunately it was pretty cool, about 38°F, which I love. I've found that I overheat very easily so I raced without a hat and just a thin shirt. That worked out well for me and probably helped my time.
It was pretty crowded, I think, for Durham. Apparently about 1100 runners/walkers registered although a little over 200 did not show or at least they did not have times. Most of the USATF restrictions applied (no dogs, skateboards, etc) but baby strollers were allowed if they started at the back. Corrals were kind of informal and there were no pacers. That 1100 included both walkers and runners, 5K and 10K. Both races started at the same time and ran over the same course for a little over 2 miles before they split. Up until the split we were all running/walking together.
Bright cool, and sunny on a "rolling but fast" course as they say. Everyone was so cheerful. This race felt very different than the 5K I was in last December. That race was clearly organized and managed by a huge company and felt very corporate. This race, OTOH, had a local nonprofit as its focus. I'm not sure if that is why it felt so different, and frankly better. There were many volunteers along the course to cheer us on. That was nice.
Man I was so intimidated. Partly my nerves came because I really have just been training with these C2Whatever apps. I have never used a watch, or had a trainer, or trained with a class or group. So I just do not know how to do some things--like holding a consistent pace. Though I have read as much as possible, and try to learn that way. My breathing I think is pretty consistent and rhythmic, for example, and I think that helps.
The first 4 miles I held pretty steady, and then I got to the second (and last) water/Powerade station . It was on the rolling part of the course, up from the steepest hill. And I thought, well I will just walk through the water station... which I did, a bit. And then I ran the next mile a little more slowly... and then mile six was walk/run/walk/run/walkwalkwalk/run/walkwalk... you get the picture.
Last week I plugged my 5K race time into a race time predictor and it said I should be able to run a 10K at a 9:41 pace which would put my time at just about an hour. Since I was not wearing a watch today, I had really no good sense of time (stupid of me I know) but was pretty sure I had blown that hour deadline so I just started walking more and more. Until...
Coming up to the last bend around towards the finish line, literally the finish line was less than a quarter of a mile away, a total stranger ran past me, saw me walking, looked straight into my eyes, and said, in the most authentic, genuine, caring way, "I have faith in you. I know you can do this." Well, then I had to run, so I ran. And as I turned the corner there was a marching band playing and I could hear the voices of my friends cheering me on, then I knew I could not stop running. Then I heard the announcer say, "get ready for a 10K sprint"** so I sprinted, and damn it if I did not come in just under an hour.
Final pace: 9:40. I beat the calculator by one whole second, lol.
**But the announcer never actually said "get ready for a 10K sprint." What he said was "get ready for a kid's cape sprint"...superhero capes being the theme of the run today. I had just misheard him. Lucky me.
My superhero is the woman who said she had faith in me. I have no idea who she was and I am ashamed to say I was so involved in talking with my friends at the finish line that I did not try to find her. But she really, truly, made my day.

Sunny and low 30s F this morning. Thought about today being a longish run, but I helped my brother-in-law move some furniture yesterday and had leg cramps last night, along with some super fun lower GI issues as well. So I went out today and ran a training PR for 7k.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020K in 2020
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders
2020 races:
4-25 Shine the Light 5k, Twinsburg, OH
5-23 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson OH
6-20 Freedom Run 5k, Aurora, OH9 -
I did not run yesterday, as my kids’ schedule with their dad is wonky this month so my daughter can attend her social skills classes.
I was up and ready for an awesome day yesterday, but autism had another plan in mind. It was not a good morning - not by a long shot. I did get my daughter to her class but she was an hour and a half late. I still made her go because the lesson involved in making her keep her commitments, no matter which thing (of a myriad of potential things) is bothering her or which thing isn’t just-so. We still have to live life. Even when it doesn’t suit us... i say to everyone - if you have met one person with autism- you have met exactly that- ONE person with autism. And - if you don’t live with autism, you don’t understand autism. The day improved and my daughter and I had a productive conversation after I picked her up and I also was able to explain to my son that his sister was struggling, she doesn’t really hate me, and sometimes she will just struggle and It’s not always in her control.
Needless to say- i had nothing left for anything else yesterday afternoon. I cleaned, showered, had a nice glass of scotch that my big brother got me, and watched movies.
Today, though! Today!!! It’s going to be mid sixties and beautiful and I. AM. RUNNING! 18 miles planned!
Next weekend is 12, then 20, then 12, 22, 12, and 8 - for long runs. I have to stop being mostly a weekend warrior though, which means I have to force the schedule through the week so I can get this thing done10 -
@Tramboman WAY TO GO!
Sorry about your GI issues! Getting out is better than not getting out so you still got the thing done!1 -
@durhammfp - great job with the race!
@7lenny7 - I hope Kody's injury is nothing serious. Maybe he just stepped wrong and irritated his paw!
@Camaramandy648 - dealing with a teen (or preteen) is hard enough but one with autism I am sure is really difficult. I have never dealt with it so I can't know what it is really like, I just know that I wondered when my daughter was that age how any of our children make it to adulthood.
I am heading out for a run in a few minutes but wanted to share these pictures from our dog beach meet up yesterday. It was a gloriously beautiful day. It was supposed to rain, then they said in the afternoon, then evening, then overnight and then nope... nothing. Now what was going to be rain until Thursday has been pushed to rain starting on Tuesday. But with this morning looking like a repeat of yesterday, I'll take it!So clear - the island way off shore is Catalina. The pup in front is Hobbes trying to get someone to throw his toy
So many Vizslas!
Empty beach for Hobbes to run and run!
Afterwards we stopped at my favorite strawberry stand 😋😋😋12 -
Happy Sunday 😀
So yesterday I decided to run on the green way that will be the course for the HM. I’ve not run this part of our extensive green way system as it is in Cary, and I’m in Raleigh which is not very far, but still a drive to get to. Anyway I wanted to see the course. And man, this one is tough. This particular stretch of greenway is 7.1 miles. The race has you start at one end and go almost to the end (less about a mile I guess) and turn around and head back.
I actually started at the other end so I was a mile from the turn around part in the race, so basically I went the opposite way, but as it’s out and back either way I would see what I’m dealing with.
It was cool and windy and that made it horrible to start. Then I had to stop several times as I didn’t know where I was going as far as following the correct trail (there are many connectors) and there are quite a few long steepish hills. And we have to cross a few main streets ie traffic lights to continue the green way. Then my toe pain decides today is good day to flare up, and at mile 6, I could barely walk. I had to limp and take shoes off and massage the ball of my foot and toes and kind of move my foot around in the shoe to a position it wouldn’t hurt. So the back half was way slow, lots of walking and I did manage to run slowly after the pain subsided a bit. The hills and downhills didn’t help, but I made it back to car having done 12 miles. It was easily the worst run I’ve had. I started slow, didn’t know where I was going and then the toes.
I’ll have to go back to the doctor to see what’s up.
I did want to try to to get a pb time for a HM but I really don’t think it will happen on this course. My goal now is to at least do as well as my one and only other race, if not finish lol.
Today I’ll do recovery walk, don’t think I will run because of the foot, and tomorrow is rest day so that will be good.18 -
@durhammfp Great race! I would like to do a race in Durham..
@7lenny7 sorry about Kody...hope he is alright1 -
@polskagirl01 loved the race report. Congrats on your PB and your sons 1st place finish. Sounds like a wonderful time!
@LoveyChar I would never consider taking Kody on a run like that...long miles, paved route, and that much heat would not be good for him.
@bearly63 sorry to hear about your stress fracture. i hope you heal quickly and completely.
@durhammfp what a great finish to your race, well done!
@shanaber Kody's paw is fine. I think it's a tendon issue in one of his front legs. Lots of swelling and limping when he walks. I'm going to try to get him into the vet tomorrow. Looks like a great day at the beach!
No run for me today. I decided to skip it because I have a ton of work to get done. I hate working on weekends, but so be it.

Thanks everyone for support and helping me feel better about my effort. I had a good run before and really out of practice so I have to get back into a rhythm. So my body I think wasn't ready yet.
Today resting and eat, and next week more miles 😊8 -
Very nice run on Saturday, 5 miles on the Greenline. Still slow but feeling a little more like my usual self - you know the saying that the first mile is a lie? Lately it’s been more like the first two and a half, by two I’m to that state where you keep promising yourself if you just make it to that next lamppost you will let yourself quit, then you do it over again. But yesterday the first two miles felt almost normal.
The weather was literally perfect for running, for me anyway - 50 something degrees, light wind, sunny. I didn’t even have sweaty hair when I finished.
A lot of people were out on Patriot Lake in canoes, including one family trying to encourage their dog to swim for the first time. The dog was some small black and white bird dog-looking retriever type which was clearly meant to be a water dog. They had another dog which was swimming around with great gusto, to give the other dog an example, they went out in the canoe and called to the dog... no dice. Finally they came back to the shore and the dog jumped in the canoe. So they paddled out and the dog got anxious about the shore getting further away and leaned over the side of the boat, and whined, and carried on, and finally JUMPED the hugest jump into the water. And then immediately discovered that swimming was the absolute best thing! When we came back around the two dogs were paddling around together swimming and swimming in pure delight. And all the nearby people were cheering for the happy dog.12 -
So google knows me a little too well.
14 -
@bearly63 – wishing you a speedy recovery, swimming is also good. I watched a programme a while back where someone improved their bone density through diet.
@durhammfp – fantastic running, be very proud
@hamsterwheel6 – don’t rule anything out on race day and hopefully you get a solution for your toes before race day
Long run attempt today turned in long, slow and painful run. Had a detour in my warm up walk as I needed to 'express' myself which is my worst fear on race day. First 8 miles were fine and then I ran next to the wetlands which was a permanent headwind across open space and the mucus machine just switched on again leading to a run/tissue/wal/repeat scenario before I reached a point of think I had nothing left to give and switched off my tracker at 12.9 miles. What idiot doesn't go to 13.1? Apart from this idiot obviously!

Question: The week after your race, do you ease back into your miles, or do you go back to what you were running pre-taper?0
-
Question: The week after your race, do you ease back into your miles, or do you go back to what you were running pre-taper?
I typically ease back in. Kind of reverse taper (erring on the side of short/easy) and work my way back up to whatever my typical training volume is. Taper usually starts after a peak well over what my normal would be so I don’t build to that again unless it’s part of another race cycle.
But it also depends on the length of the race, the effort I ran the race (I don’t “race” all my races) and what is coming up and how I’m feeling.

Today I ran 8.3 miles. I was inspired to do some hills, since we were just talking about them, so I ran uphill for 3 minutes, and downhill for 3 minutes with 3 minutes of flat in between each hill for the first 5 miles, and then I tried to go a little faster to see if I couldn't get my average speed up to 11 minute miles (because I'm stupid and never learn.) I made it another 3 miles before suddenly, I felt like my legs didn't know how to just run naturally. Something was off about my gait, and I couldn't pinpoint what it was, but I only struggled with it for a few minutes until I told myself that if my gait wasn't right, was I trying for an injury? So, I have no idea what that was about. I hope that's not a new thing.

It sounds like you may have run into the classic “jello legs,” which are a thing that happens when running downhills in particular, if you aren’t used to them and spend a lot of effort on braking rather than “flowing” downhill. Sometimes people are surprised to find themselves literally on their hands and knees after attacking hills! Anyway yeah, try new things gradually. I beat up my Achilles’ tendon pretty bad going downhill last year.4 -
March Goal 40 miles
To date 14.8
Added a mile to my run today so 3.3 miles (mini long run) for me in 60 degrees and sunny skies. Spring is in the air here in Michigan. I saw my first robin and my first redwing blackbird of the season last week. It seems a little early to me but maybe they know something I don't. I hope so .
I love doing hill work as part of my strength training before doing speed work. You do need to be careful though like anything new it stresses different areas so I try to ease into it when i start back up. Hopefully by this summer i'll be ready to attack the sledding hill at the local park again.7 -
3/1: 10 miles
3/2: 3 miles
3/3: 5 miles
3/4-3/6: In bed with flu
3/7: 2.25 miles
3/8: 3 miles
Still recovering from illness. I was able to run without walking today, my lungs still burned but nowhere near as bad as yesterday. My Garmin shows my max heart rate about 20 beats over where it normally is, even though I kept it pretty slow, and my anaerobic rate was much much higher than usual from the unintentional extra effort.
But, I did it. Happy for the nice weather and the start of daylight savings!6
