Walked 6 miles very slowly, since it wasn’t raining and don’t know if I will be told to not do anything after Tuesday. Always love fresh air.
Thanks all for the kind words....it will heal and this turtle will be back to running or somthing when ATX hits the 90s lol! 🐢🥵
@rheddmobile Yes....still not convinced because it feels like hip flexors/groin pull, sometimes lower back upper glutes tightness and a little sore. I don't even know where it is so I am looking forward to seeing the MRI - I'm kind of a medical geek (should gone to med school) so I will be asking a ton of questions. My mom had bad osteoporosis but I am so much farther ahead of the curve than she ever was with my fitness, health, HRT, and vitamins. Really never want to go on some of the scary drugs out there.
@LoveyChar Thanks so much!!!
@durhammfp That is so cool that the nice lady pushed you on! Runners are the best!
@Camaramandy648 I am so impressed with your wise words to your kids after a hard morning! You earned a wonderful 18 mile run! Hope it went well!
@shanaber Beautiful! Those dogs looks so happy!
@hamsterwheel6 Ouch....hope that foot issue resolves fast!
@7lenny7 Poor Kody....I guess we forget that our fur friends have tendons, ligaments etc too. Hope he heals fast.
@TheMrWobbly Thanks and that is my next area of research. I eat a lot of spinach etc but I am sure I can improve!

Question: The week after your race, do you ease back into your miles, or do you go back to what you were running pre-taper?
It depends on the race.
5k? 10k? I may even run extra miles the very same day as the race.
10Miler? HM? - Those distances I currently run a few times a week, so I just carry one like I never raced.
Full Marathon? 50k? I usually force myself to take a day, maybe two off, then I do a test run. By the end of the week I am back to full normal running schedule.
Keep in mind though, I have been running as an adult for a LONG TIME and as such my base running fitness is much higher than probably 90% of the field.
For people who are not me, it would come down to listening to your body. How do you feel? If you feel fine, take a test run and see how it goes. If you feel worn down, take a rest day and re-evaluate the next day. It is critically important to this sport that you learn to listen to your own body and adapt plans to match what it is telling you. That is how you avoid injury and build long term health and fitness.4 -

I run long distance. I just want to run. I 'listen' to the body and go from there.@PastorVincent wrote: »

Wait there's a death valley HALF??
A lot of our National Parks have half marathons that are nearby (if not partially in).
Death Valley has an ultra in July. Badwater 135. It's sometime that even as a desert dweller I think is a bit ridiculous. But I'd still do it. If I remember correctly you are allowed to leave the course once to go cool off but have to re enter the course where you left.
Death Valley did stop Badwater for a few years because of "safety". If I remember correctly they moved it outside of DV but have since moved it back.5 -

I’m doing the Lake Powell half this October. I have my eye on a lot of the events on their calendar. Such a fun way to see the parks!

The Death Valley race isn’t part of that, but many of the other national parks are.
I’d love to do the Alaska week long deal too. But that’s not in the cards for this year. I hope they offer it again.4 -
I. DID. IT. 18 miles for the day! If i subtract lifting in the gym time, then I ran 18 miles in four hours. That is not the worst thing! This means I could possibly make the six hour cut off for the marathon!
So let me just tell you.... today was HARD. I mean, REALLY hard. I wanted to be done with the day while I was still in the gym, before I ever even made it to the trail. My hip was hurting - IT band, I know. It has been improving so much so I was disappointed to find that I am still dealing with it.
When I got to the trail - I wasn’t sure how I’d make it the whole fourteen miles I had left. I decided I would dominate my own brain and tell myself, “Okay, you wanna quit so bad? Fine. But not yet. You can quit in a little while.” And I just kept telling myself that.
I ran up almost all the hills. I ran down all the hills. I fueled with gels and water. I tried to keep my walking structures but the wind was SO MUCH today and I was fighting it the whole way out, no matter which direction I turned, it found me. There were times when I just didn’t care- i was walking.
The way back, my motivation was simply, “five miles til the water fountain,” and, “just one more mile til the water fountain,” and, “the only way i get to be done is if I make it back to the car.”
Today was so, so hard and I even at one point thought, “i am never running again.” - yeah right lmao
But now that I’m home and foam rolled. I am SO PROUD of myself. Like beaming. I did it!21 -

@bearly63 Thanks, I’m pretty sure it’s that inflamed nerve or ligament right at the base of toe 3. Yesterday was such a sharp pain right at that spot and the the toes hurt as well.
Hope you prognosis is better than we think, and yes ask lots of questions!3 -
It was another gloriously beautiful morning and once I got going I didn't want to stop. Felt like I could just run forever. I did not plan to run over 7 miles, actually planned for 4.5-5 but it was great. The only bad was on the last mile to home I had terrible stomach cramps, to the point of doubling over and needing to sit for a while because it hurt so bad. I almost called my husband to come get us but I just ran and if it hurt I stopped or walked. Now I am just fine so I have no idea what that was all about.

Today I got to run 3.36 miles around the cemetery by my house, with a couple of stretches along lakes number 1 and 2. My running friend canceled due to “epic child meltdowns” so I went on my own and it was absolutely beautiful. Way too many people for the last stretch along the lakeshore, but I can’t be mad at people enjoying sunny mid-50s in March!
After my toe snafu yesterday I trimmed my toenails and rebandaged the rubbed spot, and then today I wore toe socks under my regular socks just to be extra safe. No blood this time! My foot was kind of stiff and almost-but-not-quite painful for the first mile or so - I’d tried not to let the toe situation affect my gait yesterday but it seems like it must have. It was fine by the end of the run, though. Best run in a while, for sure.
It was nice to see my pace has been increasing over my last five runs (not counting the extra walking yesterday). I’m still about a minute and a half slower than I was in 2018, but I’m still running and that’s what matters. That got me thinking about how awesome it is that I've kept running even with all the challenges of the last year or so. I guess that means I’m a runner!

I know of death valley because a kiwi woman, Lisa tamati, ran the ultra a few times and She won an award in NZ for it as well. She always stood out to me as someone with a huge amount of mental stamina. She actually lives in my new city and I often see her out and about. Never ran with her though!
I can't remember if I updated this morning... So ignore this if this is a double up.
Woke up and it's pouring with rain. Woo hoo! Gardens need it, been a long hot dry summer. And I LOVE running in the rain. So went out for 8k, and had a blast. Puddles everywhere. Just a calm relaxing run. It was glorious.
I got absolutely soaked to the skin, wanted to keep going. But moderation stopped me from doing too much.
It's weird I usually prefer to have plans in place, and follow a plan, but I'm really enjoying doing what I feel. I kinda loosely have Mon and wed as longer runs with a long run either Saturday or during the week if ai have a day off, and the other days doing what I feel. I mentally have 2k as my shortest distance, but generally do more like 3 or 4k as my short run. This is slowly increasing I notice.
I'm just having fun!

It was a sunny 59°F this afternoon. It's supposed to rain most of the week, so decided if I was going to do a long run outside, I needed to do it today. After feeling so bad yesterday, I wasn't sure how it would go. I decided I'd just take it easy, which I really haven't figured out how to do on outdoor runs, and see how it went. Well, I ran EIGHT miles today. That is my longest run EVER! My pace wasn't too shabby for me either - 11:45 minutes/mile. I got two PBs today - Longest run and Fastest 10K at 1:12:34. The one I ran in July was 1:18:33, so 6 minutes faster and I wasn't trying to be fast today. And, it was 4.5 minutes faster than the one I did 10 years ago!
I may not have tried to push it too much, but I can already feel it in my legs, which I usually don't. I have a feeling I am going to be sore tomorrow which is going to make getting down in the floor to play with the 2 year olds and playing tennis difficult. It may be an interesting day.
I walked a mile to warm up and another mile to cool down. Total distance traversed today was 10 miles!!

I think I last updated on Friday from Arizona. I finished out my trip with a shorter run on Saturday morning around Scottsdale, ending up in a coffee shop for a much-needed and delicious latte. My legs were pretty dead from the run and hike and walking to dinner the day before.
I had an early flight this morning and it takes forever to get back cross-country (and with the time change, losing 3 hours of the day), so I was worried that this could be the end of my running streak. Fate intervened though and I encountered the Peloton kiosk at O'Hare airport in Chicago. I was dressed in leggings and my running shoes (because I couldn't fit them in my bag) so I stopped by and asked about the treadmill. Knowing full well of course that I would get a hard sell - but hey, you do what you have to! I tried it out for a few minutes and then asked if I could keep running for a total of 15 minutes to keep my running streak alive and he laughed and said sure. He gave me a bottle of water and a towel, plus a really nice body wipe after so I could clean up a bit. I mostly kept it easy, hoping I wouldn't get too sweaty, but I did crank it up a little bit to see how it was. It was very smooth. I'm sure I'll be dodging emails and phone calls from this guy for the rest of my life trying to pressure me into buying it for "just" $111/month (not sure how long, and you have to pay $39/month for the subscription service as well).
Back to the real world for another hectic week. I'm glad I had a chance to escape to the desert for a few days and soak up some sun. The hike was the best part, but I really enjoyed going for a run every morning in those pleasant temps.12 -
SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 10 Miles :::: 13.1 Miles
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: 1 hour cross training
Wednesday :::: 10 miles :::: 11 Miles
Thursday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 miles
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: Rest Day
Saturday ::::: 6 miles easy, 10 miles at MGP :::: 16 miles (no MGP)
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 9 Miles
Total Miles: Plan 52, Actual 59
Did much better on actually running all the runs this week but Saturday's speed work just did not happen. I got out there and I was tired before I even took one step so I decided to just do 16 miles instead. Even that was tough. I was just dragging all the way up the hill and back. I have not caught up with coach yet so not sure if she knows yet. I wanted to run more today but had to run out to fill in for someone else at the last moment, so I took my 9 miles and called it lucky.7 -
Need any salt? 😂
Some of y'all talk about how much you sweat in the summer... well, if you need salt, I have some for you... oh and this is typical for a run even in 30sF

So, my ability to stay on pace for the 50 mile club lasted all of 1 day. Today was my first run since the first. Last week was one of those weeks where I had either limited time, or limited spoons, or both.... and decisions went towards other levels of adulting each time. Yesterday, was, as others have mentioned, gorgeous, and I was excited for an outdoor run. But I picked going fishing before running, and forgot running hydration systems.... and only brought the shoes I wore, and proceeded to fall in. (I’m just learning the fly fishing thing, over a life of spin fishing.... coordination is not my strong point)..... so.... no running....
today, I hoped gorgeous would last long enough for an outdoor run.... but the temp just kept falling instead of rising as the day went on. So, I planned for 2 miles, on the treadmill, plus squats.... but the run just felt good. Like even my walk intervals seemed slow. Therefore, I did a “long” run, and bales on squats. (I rarely need an excuse to skip the evil of squats.)
4.3 today = 7.3/ 50
50 mile club is still possible... but much less probable at this point.8 -

I have to catch up on reading, but figured I’d check in. Thursday it was raining when I left work. I debated between the gym and doing it outside when I got home. I was afraid that I would make an excuse when I got home, so I went to the other Y location that has virtual run sessions on the treadmill. It was a very hot run and it was a struggle. Yesterday, on the other hand was beautiful! There was a strong wind at times, but it was great to be outside and I really focused on trying yo focus on the mile I was in vs. worry about how much was left. I had a lot of thoughts to process as my grandma passed away on Thursday, but in a way I felt that she was there with me on the run letting me know that everything was ok. Not sure if my sports bra is tugging in a way on my left shoulder or if I’m holding too much tension, but about an hour after the run the pain set in and it’s been quite the struggle.
I’m excited though as I have a runner’s assessment scheduled for a couple weeks from now. I had bid on it at a silent auction last year and had been putting it off as was a bit intimidated by it. It is a 90 minute assessment with all kinds of sensors and a treadmill session. I don’t think they do the VO2 testing, but check form, gait, and muscle responsiveness.

The hike was the best part, but I really enjoyed going for a run every morning in those pleasant temps.
Now this is inspiring! I would never have thought to do that, so I'm not only amazed but impressed! Love it!1 -

Well done! Very impressive!1 -
