I m away for 12 hours and it takes me 2 hours to catch up! Love you ladies!

Weather was gorgeous today! We strung a rope across the open front doors with a sign that said STOP! Again, I had to tell a couple of customers that they were getting too close. What part of 6 ft do folks not understand? We had to go to pet store for dental sticks and doggie food. Wore my gloves, hand sanitized them when got to truck. Stopped at grocery for yogurt and berries. Got canned green beans (the only kind my husband eats). Still no beets or frozen veggies. Did get a whole chicken and some chicken breasts. The few people shopping were practicing social distancing. Good thing we are still okay on TP. After grocery sanitized and discarded gloves.

Lannette- We like "brinner" also known as breakfast for dinner. Omelettes, toast, and applesauce. Fast and easy.

Machka That report was extremely insightful. The red tape in the US is ridiculous. So is the "me" attitude. Smh! If folks had thought about their mowers while we twiddle thumbs this winter they wouldn't be needing to visit us at work and waiting for their turn in parking lot.

I know they say check up on older family members during this but also we need to check up on younger relatives. One 42yr old Nurse died positive her 4yr old son wasn’t discovered until a Family Member who had a check in with me daily demand called police. Baby was alone 12-16hours approx with the body y no adult. It may be I’ll now given to Father who didn’t live with them y is being tested. So check on family so important right now especially if their Single Parents! Georgia she did mammograms.

Hi all,
I contacted Penny at the Pole yesterday. She is fine and in the same situation as all of us with the social distancing and stay at home orders. Her hub is finding distance teaching a bit wearing, but at least they are coming out of the darkest months now. They've had a few prowling polar bears in town, so she's been a bit wary of running too far.
I guess four walls look much the same wherever you are in the world!
I was glad to hear back from her. My memory of my visit to Longyearbyen is still crystal clear. So exciting and she and her husband were so welcoming and gave us such a comprehensive tour of the area. I feel I know it really well. It's now part of my DNA.

Another beautiful spring day. I will be running this afternoon. I'm typing this as dawn comes up in pink and gold across the roof tops. The last time we were on the seafront there was a police car patrolling to check on social distancing, but I thought people were being very good. We gave everyone a wide berth. With all this exercise I might even lose a pound! I'm eating sensibly and healthily and have cut back on drinking. Two AF days so far this week. Round here the alcohol aisles are selling out! DH went to the off licence and bought six more bottles of a lovely red.

It's DDIL's 40th birthday this Saturday and we were all going up the i360 and having a cream tea at the Grand Hotel. Of course, that's all been cancelled long ago. I've already sent her card and will order a "letter box" flower delivery today. The gorgeous shiny black running leggings she wanted from Sweaty Betty are out of stock. I am on the waiting list. Oh well. I know she couldn't care less at the moment. She is doing her best with podcasts and Facebook pages to keep everyone going in trying times.

I emailed, texted and WhatsApped my old school friend who lives in the adjacent town yesterday. She is in bad health with lymphoma. She hasn't replied. A mutual friend i contacted said she has been replying to her, so she is alive. We had a complicated relationship at school. Local small shops are delivering so she shouldn't have a problem with food. She does have a brother and a son, though not local.

Tonight's dinner will be braised fennel and baked salmon. Brown rice perhaps to soak up the fennel juices?
My problem is that DH needs feeding up and I need feeding down. I give him more carbohydrates, cheese and butter, but he is naturally not a big eater. He likes his toffees in the evening after dinner and orders six boxes at a time. His teeth are fine! He likes to be skinny, but in current times I think a pound or two reserve is not a bad thing. He is a bit of a demon exerciser!

I have to confess I did not write yesterday, but I did pick up the red diary from when I was 13, and read the poem I had written in the front of it. I will type that out today.

Allie I am just so glad you got back home. There now people stuck on Cruise ships and no one will let them on their soil. There is a couple stuck in Peru because all the borders are closed. You may be amoung the last group of foriengers who got the see Peru.

This is why I was so frantic early on because my DH has kidney cancer and one kidney now and is 71. I made a promise to him I will not take him to the hospital if he gets sick I will treat him here at home. I think others our age have already realized this and will not go into the hospital so the numbers they are quoting are off. Remember I was not counted in the Swine Flu because I never went to the doctor.

And no wonder ... the only reason Tasmania has 47 cases now is from people on cruise ships. So far there have been no local transmissions, but most of those 47 have come off infected ships as did a lot of the mainland cases.

I rather think that it will be a long, long time before Australia starts welcoming cruise ships again. They have a bit of reputation of bringing in disease, but this time it's serious.

Hello one and all.

Yesterday we hit a high of 89! While many are still waiting for spring we are seeing summer. Our average temperature is normally 81 during the month of March. All of this week I have been dressing in my new office attire....shorts and a t-shirt. I am happy to report most of the shorts are way too big and my smaller ones are starting to become inappropriate for someone in my not-so-young years. I really must work upon making my butt a little perkier. LOL!

I am grateful for many things this morning.

• I awakened to another healthy day on this sweet earth.
• When I turned on the TV this morning the channel happened to be showing Reina Ozby singing "The Star Spangled Banner". Her voice brought tears to my eyes. It was also a reminder we are all in this together. For those who are interested.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvVYksvBQZA

Yes, I'm still around.

In mid-March I had an anxious week. Scandinavia was gradually coming under lockdown and I wasn't sure where I would end up. At the time I was teaching in Sweden and my husband was at home in Svalbard, under quarantine after a trip abroad.

Norway closed its borders to non-citizens who didn't have residency permits.
But that didn't apply to citizens of other Scandinavian countries, like me.
All international flights into Norway were cancelled from 8 am Monday.
But I was booked on a flight Sunday afternoon.
Everyone who arrived from abroad had to go into 14-day quarantine.
But people arriving from Sweden or Finland were exempt.
Then, because of spiking infections, everyone arriving in northern Norway from southern Norway had to go into 14-day quarantine.
But I was on a direct non-stop flight from Sweden to north Norway.

I was booked to fly to Svalbard four days later, but I decided to play it safe and fly up as soon as possible. I booked a one-way ticket for Monday and was one of just 13 passengers on a plane that usually carries at least 10 times that. My husband picked me up at the airport and boy was I glad we were finally in the same place!

My High Arctic refuge is still free of covid-19. We're easy to isolate because there are only a couple ways to get here. But we're also unusally vulnerable because so few people are capable of running our infrastructure and we only have one of everything: one hospital, one power plant, one grocery store. All the tourists were sent south a week ago. (There went our main source of income!) Schools, restaurants, gyms, hotels and most workplaces are closed.

But, as Heather mentioned, it isn't dark anymore. In fact, the earth has already tipped so far into summer that it's never darker than dusk. A couple more weeks and we'll have 24-hour sunlight.

You know that joke I posted about killing people who p....d you off. Sometimes I just WISH my DH would give me credit for being right about so much. I have many of you to thank for this and I avidly read statistics, projections etc by the expert groups, so I have a lot of info. He nearly always disagrees with me and then two weeks later I am invariably proved RIGHT. He never credits me for that and I never say I told you so. One thing I am good at is my ability to plan and my ability to see the logistics of things. He is pretty useless at visualising these things unless it is all set out on paper. Some of it is political, so I won't put it on here.
I know I have to be patient in these times. I could set the world to rights in an instant and it is not an attractive quality.
One of the requirements for happiness is to give up the desire to be always right. But I am.

Ooops, it is my DDIL'S 40th birthday today, I've just learned from Facebook, and I've ordered a flower delivery to get to her on Saturday when her party was planned. I've apologised on Facebook.

This is a pic she posted this morning of the family up at Devil's D yke this morning, our local beauty spot on the South Downs. The valley is formed by ice and ends in a terminal morraine, but there are many local legends around it. The top of the hill has a fantastic view right across the Weald of Sussex.

Penny - Such a lift to see you posting, and to know you're home and safe!

Heather - I have the same I'm-right-and-you're-wrong disease. But, like you, I don't indulge in "I told you so." It did, however, take my husband about five years to figure out that when I end a discussion or a statement of any kind with, "But I could be wrong," it actually means "I'm right but it's not worth arguing." Many happy returns to your lovely daughter-in-law.

Just staying at home, but not very different than my norm, after all. Supposed to get up to 86 F today (30 C) for a little preview of summer. Got a Walmart pickup slated for tomorrow morning. I now have them sign for me (which they offer) when I pickup, so I have no contact at all.

Then I take them home and wipe everything down. Below is a family physician who posted a really terrific idea on how to do just that - it's long, but has some tips and some really good thought processes behind what he's proposing. And he uses the glitter technique!

Good morning all! Happy Thursday! I slept well again last night. I am sure the reason for that is because I heard back from all of my childcare parents last night. They were all very kind and supportive and all have agreed to continue paying my wages until my spots fill with children of essential workers. As each email came in, from each family, I was in tears. I have always known I have been very lucky in my career to have amazingly caring families. But this is an unusual circumstance that makes many cling to everything they have. You know, kind of go into "survival" mode. So I really wasn't sure what type of financial aid I would receive from them. I am so humbled and grateful. Another plus, we heard from our mortgage company and they are deferring our payments for two months with no penalty/added interest or fees. So...now it is just down to utility payments and credit card payments. Manageable.
KarenVA and others- Oh, believe me, I was on the phone and sending emails to the local hospital, healthcare/urgent care offices, home health businesses, grocery stores, etc. and sending out messages to my friends in emergency service and other essential jobs. Giving them my name and contact info and permission to give it out. I have also posted on our local "information" page. I talked to someone at the ISD, yesterday, and explained that I haven't heard from anyone and she mentioned that most people are looking for those closest to them and just taking the first person who says that they can watch their children. Because I am further outside of town (about 5 miles), it may take some time before I fill up. But she was pretty sure I would fill up within a week or two.
Lisa- DH and I got a giggle at Neil Diamond's new lyrics. Even my son, who only knows this song because of baseball (the Red Socks, I think), thought this song was hilarious. AND I NEVER would have recognized him. His voice hasn't changed, however. Sweet Caroline has a special place in my heart/memories of my late, younger sister.
Penny- So good to hear from you! I am so glad you made it home to "shelter". Would have been misery to be quarantined away from the comforts of home. I wonder if the polar bears sense the lack of outside activity and are moving in to check things out?
Cheri- I am so happy to see your posts and hear how your daughter is faring! Cute little house! Your blankets are lovely. If I were not working, crochet or knitting is on my "something to learn" list to while away the time. BUT...I still have the same amount of spare time I had before. Maybe an hour or two more, as everything is closed now.
