Every time I get brave enough to venture out to a store, I always look for hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes, neither of which I've been able to find. I, thankfully, have bleach on hand and will make my own cleaning rags to keep things as clean as I can. But sure would like to find some hand sanitizer, especially for my ds and her dh. Has anyone made their own using rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel? I've got the rubbing acohol but I assume I could order aloe vera gel thru Amazon.
We have a few small spray bottles of a "natural" hand sanitizer that we bought quite a while back. When those empty, we've been pouring our 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol in them, and that can just be sprayed directly on hands. It's of course a fire hazard, so keep away from flames!! We only use when really necessary.1 -

While her behavior was exceedingly rude, I'd caution people against making snap judgments about what folks have in their carts. I belong to a large family and I'm currently the only one making grocery runs for 13 people spread across 3 separate homes. So, whilst it may look like I'm panic hoarding, I'm truly not. I'm trying to buy the bare minimum essentials to last 14 days for 13 people which is a crap ton of food (when I can actually find it).
That's a great point. I also know of people picking up items for a number of others who are more at risk.7 -

My aunt in Ohio said they have already had home invasions in her area for food and basic supplies - people kicking in doors at ridiculous hours in the night holding homeowners at gunpoint. (They don’t live in the best area, but also not the worst). Something that had crossed my mind (thanks to a book series I read a couple years ago), but hadn’t really thought would be a reality for our situation just yet.
As this continues, be mindful of locking doors and taking precautions. Start talking about self/family defense now. Get a game plan with any children that might be in the home. We aren’t panicking, but we are aware of what could be as things progress.
Someone here was held up at gunpoint outside the grocery store and her groceries were stolen. People were also stealing out of each other's carts. A person in a group I'm in admitted to stealing two gallons of milk out of a cart with a lot of milk because it wasn't fair when she can't get food to support her diabetes diet. Another was robbed the other night. It's pretty sad.
Well i look like a fool (sort of). Dh wanted to but another gun yesterday and I berated him over it. I don't see how that's the answer, he has guns. And it's not the solution anyone wants. The government needs to step in an start handing some of this *kitten* out!

Thank you for that viewpoint, JaxxieKat. That is not something I would have considered. I wouldn't have noticed her at all had she not rammed me with her cart. Color me mad from that and the look she shot me.7 -

This is shipments *to* warehouse, not to customers. Yes, eventually this will impact customers as items fall out of stock in the warehouses and aren't replenished. But there is not yet any indication that shipments to customers are being suspended.7 -

I made ours. I had bottles of both on hand. I used about 75% alcohol to 25% aloe. It took it awhile to mix but it works very well. I was looking at the sanitizer they had at the doctor's office on Monday when I was there and it was the exact same ingredients. It smells like alcohol but not for too long. It dries quickly and the aloe keeps your hands from drying out.3 -

I agree with you.
At this point there are no shortages period even food wise but there are real logistics issues. At some point food and personal items will see shortages if the warehouses are not refilled say at Walmart, Kroger's, etc. That is why some try to have six months of basic food on hand even if it is just dried beans and peas.

How spoiled we were, to go through life, buying what we wanted when we wanted it (loosely, not talking brand new cars here)... things like ingredients for a special meal, fabric for a quilt project, fishing gear for my husband (he never made it to Bass Pro for his bday trip)... going to go trekking through my neighbor’s woods in search of long sticks and limbs to make trellises for my garden rather than the easy route of just running to the store to buy them... going to use yarn out of my stash instead of twine. So so many things we take/took for granted.
This has lit a fire under my butt for gardening though! Crazy how my productivity level has sky rocketed this week!12 -

Oh man not me. I'm so lazy. I'm usually up at 5am and fairly productive (nursing student). I sleep til 11 now. Lazy. Can't get crap done. Just blah. Maybe I'm going to slip in to hibernation mode.8 -

Gov. Abbott just signed an executive order that goes in effect as of midnight tomorrow through April 3rd: 1) Limits gatherings of 10 or more, 2) closes dining rooms of bars and restaurants and closes gyms/entertainment venues, 3) closes all schools & 4) no visitors to nursing homes/retirement communities/long term care facilities. He also stated that offices/businesses are not closed but are strongly recommended to have only essential personnel come into the office and allow and encourage any who can to work from home.
I'm glad Abbott stepped up to put something in effect for the whole state. Of course, we'll see if that stops the crazies on the coast who have still been gathering in droves at the beaches.4 -
And all Indiana schools are now closed until May 1 at least.2

That’s how I’ve been. I’m clocking an easy 12-13 hours a night. If I didn’t have to work, I doubt I’d get out of bed at all. What’s even the point?10 -
I've been a fan of apocalypse fiction since I've been a teen, from The Stand to One Second After. The fragility of our modern system is always evident when we have a power outage or pandemic. You realize your entire world can collapse within a few short weeks.
Any shortages we are currently experiencing are because of unchecked selfishness combined with stores failing to limit hoarding. Costco finally woke up and have a list of supplies posted where everybody gets 1 per day - sad that people have to be controlled and don't have the decency to do it independently.
Supplies will remain available, the problem will be when people who are out of work start getting desperate. That is when the looting will begin. There will likely be hoarding remorse when you run out of money to buy food but have a garage full of toilet paper you wasted your money on a few weeks earlier.13 -

This may be dumb, but it's somewhat related and it might be fun trivia. So I'm emetophobic (fear of vomiting) and in my research years ago I read that types A and O are more susceptible to norovirus (that nasty bug that makes you puke out both ends). Something about the proteins in the various types being more or less hospitable to the virus replication. Some genetic thing... Anyway, I was super excited to read that my type B is resistant to norovirus. You rarely get it, but if you do its mild. AB types are neither resistant nor more susceptible. 🤮
This is the best news so far today! I'm AB and I've been stressing about my potential vulnerability (because I tend to obsess like that). In all the bs blood type hype, AB features as a weak hybrid blood type susceptible to all the worst diseases. I shouldn't pay attention but my subconscious apparently likes the cortisol rush.
Thanks for posting that, my subconscious is relieved, even though my rational brain is pretty sure there is grossly insufficient data to support any such conclusions 😊3 -

Toilet paper can be found online. I got some on Amazon. Thrive Market and Home Depot also had it. Walmart has it too. Target I believe as well. You might have to buy a certain amount to get free delivery, but it can be found online. It might take a week or two.
I predict some Hawaiian spam recipes in your future!
Ha! We forgot we have a small standing order with Amazon Marketplace so we have been notified it's on it's way 😊 We probably won't need it so if I run into anyone who is out and can't get it I'll be happy to share 😊7 -
Wanted to share... figure this could possibly help someone who needs it! stay safe and stay healthy everyone6 -

I happened to hit Costco yesterday when they had plenty of TP. We don't need it at home, but I picked up a package and dropped it at the local food bank. Figure someone will need it.13 -

I this!
I've been taking notes on how various companies have responded to this crisis. There are definitely some who won't be getting my business moving forward based on how they've treated their employees (I'm looking at you, GameStop). And then there are others (like Burger King, who I rarely patron), who I may be giving more of my business in the future based on their response.

Who knew random acts of kindness would become heavily oriented towards TP 😄14

Just to clarify (and not to burst your bubble), I wanted to point out that the PP is referring to Norovirus, not COVID-19, when they say AB is neither resistant nor more susceptible than other blood type. The study on COVID-19 and blood type grouped A, B, and AB together as slightly higher susceptibility than O. Not a peer-reviewed study, as now many are not because they're trying to rush the research (or so I read).4 -

It's always good to be prepared, but I promise you that major retailers are considering things like restocking warehouses like food and other essential supplies during this time. We aren't going to run out of food because retailers forgot it is important to consider logistics. Let's be concerned about reasonable things: retailers refusing to stock warehouses with necessary items to resupply their stores isn't a reasonable concern.11 -
New Mexico ordered "shelter in place" last night for the entire state. All restaurants and bars are closed except for delivery or pickup. All gyms and other entertainment and recreational facilities are closed. Hotels and such are ordered to remain at half capacity.4
