@BarbaraHelen2013 I've been wanting to pull out and reread The Stand too! I just finished a few Robin Cook (medical thrillers) though they weren't related to an outbreak.3

Unlike New Zealand's government, the US isn't ensuring that those housebound via disabilities and/or poverty've access to food by delivering rations to us themselves & with grocery delivery not including enough of what I order, I've to rely upon restaurant delivery to survive.
However it's been expensive, nearly ½ of my grocery budget has gone to delivery fees, tips & paying regular prices because I am unable to wait, for something to go upon sale.7 -

It is a lose-lose situation for everyone.
A lockdown won't save everyone. It will hopefully reduce the number of serious cases so that medical facilities can either ramp up for the demand or find a better way to treat the serious cases but that is all. I believe people will be dying from this for years after life returns to "normal".
Some are saying that this could cause permanent lung damage.6 -

Especially for smokers, that's though if they survive.3 -
To all here in the US, don’t forget to do your census so they don’t have to visit in person. It will save unnecessary exposures.13

I have heard that too but I am unaware if it is credible and, if it is, who and how many are at risk. I don't really focus on the what-ifs. There is nothing I can do beyond what I am already doing so I prefer to remember that, as of now, most people that get it are able to recover at home with no medical intervention necessary.8 -

I read an editorial that they are talking about postponing the deadline.3 -
traffic hasn't slowed down where I am. I live right on the main federal road and it was typically busy all weekend and today - I'm sitting here in my living room listening to traffic going up and down the road.2

Report from WBUR's Here and Now program, broadcast on US National Public Radio (NPR):
https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2020/03/23/malaria-drug-shortage-coronavirus
Summary: Hydroxycholoquine (brand name Plaquenil) is an anti-malaria drug being tested for potential use against COVID-19/coronavirus. CDC sounds hopeful, but says proof is needed. US President has touted the drug in press conference as "a tremendous breakthrough" and "a game changer".
The drug is also important for treatment of people with other conditions, including autoimmune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
In some areas, demand has risen to the point where supplies are challenging to get, for people with the relevant health conditions who routinely need them.
Some of the increased use is potentially health professionals understandably doing anything possible (even if unproven) to avoid contagion in a context of inadequate protective equipment, but speculative over-prescription and hoarding are also suspected.
I'm trying really hard here to keep this post a simple factual summary, in light of the MFP community guidelines against political content. I think the core issue would be of common interest, but especially so to those who currently depend on hydroxychloroquine prescriptions.9 -
My province has declared a state of emergency as of yesterday. Gatherings are limited to 5. On the weekend I took an inventory of my freezer and cupboard and meal planned for 4 weeks on that. The only thing I will need to go and get is milk. I just need to make sure I stick to it and don't go into a store for sometime I want. I need to work only going in for what I need. I have no reason to be going in!! I will also soon be working from home. I just need to be set up to do it. It's going to be hard being home all day, not seeing anyone. At least I can still get out and run.1

Michigan's orders have been tightened further, from already quite significant restrictions. In brief, we are to stay at home, and business activities are limited to those that are part of critical infrastructure, or necessary to sustain and protect life (which still allows takeout food service). If anyone cares about details, here's the consumer-friendly summary of the executive order (which is available in full elsewhere on the site).
https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98159-522649--,00.html
Gatherings outside the occupants of a single household are banned, i.e., generally no cross-household visits (there are some health/safety exceptions). It's permissible to be outdoors in public at 6-foot distances from those who are not members of one's household, so outdoor exercise is still permitted.
Some/all of this, in my understanding, is enforceable as misdemeanor offences, i.e., subject to legal actions and fines.7 -

They are soon going to stop all inter-province travel as well. I think some people in Ontario can take the lockdown a bit more seriously.3 -

@missysippy930, nope, as of tomorrow at 11.59pm we are full lockdown. If I want pizza, it has to be before then, contactless delivery. Then four weeks, minimum. Obviously, I could buy stuff and make my own.

Indiana update!
Tested: 1,960
Confirmed: 259
Deaths: 7
The cases are for sure clustered so far. You have Lake County which is the most North West county right there by Chicago. Then you have Marion County (where I work) which is where Indianapolis is along with some surrounding counties including the one I live in. So I am actually in a hot spot right now in the state. Wonderful. Great. Awesome.
I put in an Instacart order for Friday. Just for a handful of items I would like to have like fresh fruit and veggies. Will I get it all? I doubt it, but I had to try. I can't get out early during the week and I really don't want to try and do a weekend morning for my own health.
Plus... I may be getting sick. Hard to tell because I have horrible allergies and I know THOSE are picking up. But I slept a TON yesterday and am still feeling so fatigued today. Then again, I also have chronic fatigue so... It stinks. I am going to treat this as me getting ill and take precautions. No fever, but I have read a few stories where people have a cough, sore throat, and the like before getting the fever so can't really use that to be sure.
Do take extra precautions, but remember that even the stress of all this can trigger your ME symptoms.4 -

Ironically my apartment complex just put a county notice within my door, concerning providing food for seniors & those with disabilities but unfortunately, this doesn't include the poor.
I've enough this month & hope to next month but at least it's an option going forth, if/when necessary.1 -
Even a continuing social distancing will not last for too long, if DT has his ways...

An actual human I'm proud to know, a science teacher and robotics coach, has organized fellow teachers to retrieve goggles from schools, for donation to hospitals short of protective equipment. She and her family are also making face masks (health systems here are accepting home-made ones made to certain specifications), as well as organizing others to make masks (distributing instructions, encouraging (safe) fabric sharing, etc.). That's on top of starting to experiment with video lessons for her students.

Congratulations for your Prime Minister showing true leadership! At this time, the world needs true leaders that know what’s truly important in the world, it’s people. You are very fortunate.17 -

The silver lining, although at a great cost, is that the whole world will be prepared for anything similar in the future. We'll know in hindsight what strategies work best.8

You make the call that is going to save lives. No matter how unpopular you think it may be.
For a start, it doesn't seem like the US is doing a particularly swell job of social distancing (NZ wasn't really either, which is part of why Mum grounded us). Second, two weeks just isn't long enough. Even with lockdown, it takes a further two weeks from when that comes in for cases to peak (see: Italy). You want that peak to have subsided. Even then, life doesn't just go back to normal. Some measure of physical distancing (what we're calling it in NZ) is still going to be necessary so that it doesn't just take off again. This is a long haul thing, it's not going to be over in a few weeks.16 -

I don't think he could do anything to countermand the state governors on this.9 -
So daily numbers from our gov: IL now has 1285 confirmed cases (9868 tests). 636 of the cases in Chicago, 12 total deaths to date. Cases up about 250 since yesterday, and that was the same the day before.4

No. At least not in the Manhattan Beach/Hermosa Beach/Redondo Beach area. I don't think people should be arrested, but I do think maybe the police who drive by routinely on the bike path may want to occasionally issue a verbal reminder to some of the larger groups. Or maybe one of the lifeguards could walk the 3 feet from the big lifeguard station and suggest to the 50 or so people gathered around the building with their gym equipment that they need to separate a few feet from each other.
It's a little cold and rainy still so that is keeping the crowds down.
We have drones patrolling some of our beaches in Italy now. They hover over people and tell them to distance and that they are supposed to be at home.
While I understand and agree with the action, the mental image of that is just creepy as *kitten*.
Right--and that's exactly why it works.11 -

Lucky you didn't go to Morocco, they've closed their border, and they've got COV19 too.5 -
So embarrassed.. I had to have an aircon repairer over and before he came I hid my 36 pkt of toilet rolls, because I didn't want him to think I was a hoarder 😔 really, this is what it's come to.
PS.. I got my regular big order of groceries delivered just prior to the crap hitting the fan.. So had a few bulk items.. it was sheer stupid luck.
That I even had this thought saddens me 😔15 -

How many people will end up unemployed unable to afford medications that they need to manage their health conditions? A massive hit to the economy will cost lives too. Those lost lives won't get media attention but they will still be dead and before their time. Anyone who believes a person only dies when they are meant to die please ignore the latter part of that last sentence.
That is what I meant by no easy answers. You may not see it that way.8 -

Yeah, my sister lucked out and came back before it started there. She was planning to travel to the US next, but that got canceled, and we're thanking our lucky stars it did. Airports at a time like this (before countries started limiting air travel) is a disaster.1
