@Avidkeo - congrats on signing up for a marathon! Woo hoo! I immediately reacted with some horror though at seeing the words "more people = more fun" right now. We're not allowed! I hope November will be a totally different outlook.
Yeah really hope by November it will be sorted. I'm pretty confident actually given how NZ has been handling it.
Wow! November is what... spring for you? Is that good weather time at least?
Yep spring. November is typically pretty good for weather. I mean the marathon I'm training for ATM is in July, the middle of winter!!
Oh a mid winter race is not my favorite 🥶1 -

I watched that clip, and did my usual "Hey Google, please don't murder in my sleep" to mine. He answered me "I'm sorry, I can't help you with that." Now I'm worried....5 -

Yeah I'm nervous. I did the HM in 2011 and it was AWFUL.
On that note, can anyone recommend a great rainproof jacket that's OK to run in? I don't mind running in the rain, but think that 4hrs ill probably end up with a chill if I don't have anything appropriate0 -

I don’t know if you can find the one I’ve got anymore, but I love my Decathlon Kalengi Kiprun jacket. It has a watch window, optional cuffs with thumb holes, zippered vents on the arms and front, layered vents on the back and under the arms, detachable hood, and detachable buff. It’s the most comfortable jacket I own in anything from slightly chill to downright cold weather, completely rainproof, and also wind proof. And it looks cool. A thief stole my hood when it was in my run bag and I was wearing the jacket, and I have never forgiven them!
Anyway if Decathlon’s currently available jacket is of similar quality it should be great.3 -
@avidkeo - I have a Nike jacket that I bought tears ago on clearance that I love but it is for sure no longer available and I have not idea about any others.
@mbaker566 - will your work make a test available or do you have to go find one? Either way I hope it is negative!1 -

Ahhh found it on the Australian decathlon site, but they don't ship to NZ. Sigh.1 -

I don't quite get the purpose of that huge of a time range for a training run. Do you just stop when you feel done, or what?
It actually says ‘Absorption: adventure/hike 2-4 hours’ so it’s definitely based on pace - it’s something different to break things up/challenge myself.
I’ve had a month of aerobic pace or faster running so this is the first scheduled slow run in a very long time. I could walk for 4 hours if I wanted, but I’m opting to run slowly for around 3. If it were much shorter I’d probably be tempted to go too fast.
I daren’t go for a hike - I’d aim for four hours and still be wandering in the bush next Tuesday. I have absolutely no sense of direction. A 3hr run is pretty scary without someone alongside me to ensure I stick to the route.3 -

With Wellington, you’ll want a jacket for wind more than anything. Something super light that you can tie round your waist. Ive got a great adidas one that was awesome when I ran Taupo in a howling gale in the middle of winter. Rainproof generally doesn’t work as you’ll get saturated with sweat anyway. My advice, a good merino layer. I’d go as far as suggesting you splurge and buy Icebreaker. Their stuff is fab. And do pretty you can wear it when you’re not running!1 -

Wait what???
Me: frantically google a info...
Ohhh it starts at 6am, but probably have to catch an insanely early ferry to get to the start on time. That's OK. Im staying at a hotel that's a 15 min walk to the ferry - got an absolute bargain price due to being a healthcare worker. So be more like a 4am start. I can handle that.
Absolutely have to meet up this time!
Thanks for the advice in the Wellington half! I'll look into a good merino layer.3 -

OK, thanks. 2-4 hour adventure/hike I can totally get behind as a training plan - that's what I'm hoping to do on Sunday if I can. The different philosophies of training are interesting to me. I'd say go for a hike and bring your GPS, but maybe that's not reliable out in the bush. In any case, enjoy your break from fast running, you deserve it!2 -
Thank you to everyone who replied to my long stress-induced post ♥
My husband tested negative for COVID-19. So at least that's one less thing to worry about, that I won't have to miss two weeks of work.
I ran a 5k last night. It was probably the most miserable run of my life. My legs were so tired from the get to. Not even sore, really, just exhausted. I felt like I had been running for hours and I'd only started. The rest of me was fine, I had plenty of energy.
I don't know if its maybe because I'm not recovered fully from my 10k last week (longest run I've ever done), or if I should blame it on the pregnancy.
I've only got 2 more miles to go tonight and then I'll be at my goal of 50 for April.8 -

so around here they won't test you until you have symptoms, so we have to wait 5-7 days to see if the coworker gets symptoms-she's at home now. so i'll need to wait 10-14 days at least. maybe less because i have a compromised immune system
in other news, i'm considering doing the yeti 24 this weekend. last big push before my official 50k on the 23rd6 -

Now I'm going to go make the May thread because it's the 29th here and I've decided to be proactive!
You can find it here: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10794139/may-2020-monthly-running-challenge/p1?new=1
Thanks @Avidkeo for setting the thread up.1 -
@brittanystebbins95 - Yay # (whatever number we are up to)!!! So glad he was negative and you can take that worry away!
@mbaker566 - wow I am surprised counties/states are still managing it that way especially if you may have been exposed and have a compromised immune issue.0 -
I’m so behind on catching up with the thread and probably already behind on the May thread but I wanted to post my monthly total. Thanks to @katharmonic and the challenge she shared, I met my goal of marathon mileage each week, overall goal of 120 miles, and got out there on days that I may have normally skipped. Hope everyone is staying healthy and relatively sane!
April 2 -8: 30.34 miles
April 9 – 15: 28.34 miles
April 16 – 22: 29.58 miles
April 23 – 29: 28.35 miles
April 30: 5.18 miles
Total Monthly – 121.80
5 -
Okay, I'll post this in the May thread too.
But I did something.
I am running the full moon 50K July 18 with a friend and it is through the night, on a trail, in south Arkansas.... It will be HOT, but it's going to be so much fun. We signed up for it before my injuries started becoming really real, so I may need to just do 25K, BUT THE POINT IS
I ordered light up shoe laces. And light up/glow stick hair crap. And glitter. And glow in the dark body paint.
Because at the time, it seemed like a good idea (last night).
Have any of you done anything like this? I need some inspiration for what the heck I am doing. is this a rave or a race. At this point, it's anybody's guess.5 -
Great job @Teresa502! Way to make all your goals! Hope you are doing well, too!

I wrapped up the month with a hill workout. I've been kind of bad about doing the speedwork of the week assignment our running coach posts, although I have been doing some sprints the last couple of weeks. So this week was hill repeats for 25 minutes. I decided to just get it done this morning and headed out to a hill in my neighborhood that is a dead-end so the street would definitely not have traffic. The hill was less challenging than I remembered so I should have found a different one (there are plenty to choose from as I live in a valley more or less). But I was there, and had somewhat limited time so I just did it. I marked a half way point and did repeats of running halfway up, jog down, all the way up, jog down etc. for 25 minutes. With my warmup and cooldown it totalled 4 miles. Garmin barely registered it as a hill but I swear, there is one.
I finished the month well over my goal, and this ranks as my 7th highest mileage month so far (out of 54 months of data). For whatever reason, April has been usually a down month for me, but the run streak (today was my135th day) and marathon a week goal kept me going.
Great job this month, everyone, and thanks for being here to keep each other company during a crazy time.5 -
Great job everybody meeting their goals this month. I know it was a very challenging month mentally. But we are runners. We can get through some pretty nasty crap.
Go through 7 miles this morning. Was great weather, but have been up since 2:30am, so was a little tired. But this got me to 100 miles for the month. That wasn't even on the radar at the beginning of April, so that was a huge stretch.
Got a notice this morning that my new shoes are arriving today 😁
So start a new month with new shoes. Yay!

@katharmonic you are killing it. I am so proud of you!

173.75 miles this month on a goal of 150. Running has been my lifeline this month! The only drawback is that I lost more weight than I should have. My goal for May - no weight loss (that sounds so weird, I never thought I'd be *that* person).8 -
Who on earth thought a 6 mile run the day after sprint intervals was a good idea? Oh. Yeah. Master Hal. GOD I hated him this morning, serious struggle. Should probably have popped a gel as I usually do for runs of over an hour (I run before breakfast and my coffee and banana don't keep me going more than an hour) but I couldn't be bothered to stop the treadmill and go find one.
That's April done. Waiting for an announcement now on details for them letting us out for exercise as of Saturday. Which will coincide with a heatwave, so the hospitals are gonna be full of idiots with heatstroke and injuries from pretending to be runners at the weekend. Nice!

Virtual Race Report:
Today I ran the Zombie's Run Spring Virtual Race. It was my first time to do one of the ZR virtual races and it was a lot of fun! You can do a 5K or 10K race. As far as I know they are the same story. I was planning to run the 5K and also use it as my Un-canceled 5K for this week. I usually run at least 5-6 miles and I wanted to get 5.75 today so I could hit my stretch goal of 200 Km for April. So I downloaded the 5K race and figured that after I hit 5K I would just use the rest of the run as a cool down.
I had a little trouble getting going this morning and I only had time for half a cup of coffee instead of my usual full cup. But I needed to get started and didn't want to slam the coffee so I got dressed and headed out. It was a bit chillier this morning at 47°F but that really worked to my advantage. Virtual races are kind of hard for me because without the competition of other runners it is easy to just run it like any training run (which is what I have mostly been doing with the "un-canceled virtual races". But the cool weather helped me to run fast and after the first mile I had a nice pace of 9:14 and I was really enjoying the story. I finished mile 2 in 9:00 and was feeling really good. I thought I put on more speed in mile 3, but finished with a pace of 9:09. This is the mile where I turn around and there is a part where there is no sidewalk and I have to run through the grass for a couple of blocks and then through some parking lots so I guess that slowed me down a little, but not terribly. I finished the 5K in 28:20 which isn't my 5K PR, but is a very good 5K time for me so I was quite happy. I slowed down and stopped the Zombies Run app on my phone and then continued on my way home.
As I was running the 4th mile I realized I was still running a pretty quick under 10 minute mile so I decided that even though I had turned off the "race" I would continue and see if I could get a good 10K time. My last 3 miles were slower than the first 3 at 9:44, 9:58 and 9:51, but I managed to finish the 10K in 58:30 which was a 10K PR for me and beat my last 10K PR of 1:00:42 so I finally got my sub 1 hour 10K. So even though I downloaded the Zombies Run 5K, I'm counting it as the 10K since that is what I actually ran.
I felt so good throughout the entire run! The weather was perfect. A little chillier than I like for a normal training run, but perfect for racing. And we are supposed to hit 100° on Saturday, 102° on Sunday and 106° on Monday, so I am not going to complain about 47°. 😊 I wore shorts and a t-shirt and was dressed just right. It was a clear morning with no wind and already starting to get light when I started. It was a really good run and a really good start to the day.
The good feeling from my run so far has carried over into my day and I have just been in a great mood. I ordered new shoes for my birthday last week and I finally got the notice that they are out for delivery today so I am looking forward to new shoes for my next run. And I got the email that the HM scheduled for May 16th has been rescheduled for November 7th. I'm really glad about that. I was afraid it would just be cancelled and I was really sad about that. But I also wasn't sure I was ready to run a race with other people from all over the state in 2 weeks. So I am ok with just having to wait and run it later. Plus the weather should be nicer in November and that should help me to get a good time.
So to sum it up: Beautiful weather, fun virtual race, great 5K time, 10K PR, new shoes coming and HM not cancelled only rescheduled. Plus today is payday! 😊 I hope everyone is having a great day too!
