I shy away from group threads, too, for the same reasons you do.
Let's take a poll.
How many women in this group tend to shy away from group threads, and why?

This group is all I do on myfitnesspal. Checking in has become an important part of my day.
Welcome, Angela.

For us, my husbands severe traumatic brain injury was definitely not on the plans ...
I rarely plan more than 5 years ahead anyway, and since his accident, our plans are rarely more than about 6 months ahead ... often more like 6 weeks at a time.bananasandoranges wrote: »@machka9 that's worlds apart from the situation here. i think the first week or so we could go out only 2km but with no limit of hours so i always went for a long walk to and around a sizable city park. the 1k 1h really puts a wrench in things. i think our may11 1st step deconfinement will consist mainly of not limiting time out nor distnance opening bookshops that want to open, children's clothing stores and a few other odd bits. masks were discouraged here to start but has the virus increased it's definitely more and more encouraged (with president saying it may become obligatory at some time in the future when they have masks).
If you're out for 1 hour, can you walk for the full hour?drkatiebug wrote: »Machka, polio is the only other event in my lifetime that even comes close to what we are experiencing now. I remember classmates coming down with it, two neighbohood children who died, and many in my age group left with a debilitating mobility issues. I also remember when the vaccine was finally approved. We all lined up at my elementary school to get our sugar cube with the vaccine. Many received the smallpox vaccine in the arm at the same time. I still have my smallpox scar. But even with all that, school and work continued.
School and work continues now too ... it's the non-essential stuff like footy matches that are closed.Machka: My mother took me to the lunch counter at Woolworths as a mother-daughter treat when I was growing up. Kresses was another company that had a lunch counter, and so did Meier & Frank back then. Meier & Frank is now Macy’s & I haven’t seen a lunch counter there since the name change. :noway:
Different Woolworths. And I've learned something reading this wikipedia article! I've learned why Australia's Woolworths is the same name as other Woolworths around the world!
The Woolworths group owns a number of different stores including Woolworths (a supermarket), Big W (a department store) and more.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolworths_Group_(Australia)
"The name on the draft prospectus drawn up by Cecil Scott Waine was "Wallworths Bazaar" – a play on the F.W. Woolworth name (the owner of the Woolworth's chain in the United States and United Kingdom). Moreover, according to Ernest Robert Williams, Percy Christmas dared him to register the name Woolworths instead, which he succeeded in doing after finding out the name was available for use in New South Wales. Accordingly, Woolworths Ltd in Australia has no connection with the F.W. Woolworth Company in the United States, nor the Woolworths Group of UK. It also has no connection to the Woolworths Group in South Africa."
And I've just learned this too ...
"The new Woolworths store was innovative; it was the first variety store in the world to use cash registers that print receipts for customers."We lost our Daughter in Law’s mom to cancer after a very long and hard-fought battle with the disease. She will be missed by her many friends and her family. K was a beautiful and brilliant woman. She lived in Kentucky, a state with the highest cancer death rates in the nation at 181.6. West Virginia is listed at 179.5 and Oklahoma at 178.1. I looked it up on CDC.gov. I gather that something underneath the famous bluegrass in Kentucky is not healthy for humans.

Margaret- I am so sorry for your loss! Hugs!
I am so far behind but backed up to see this. Work crazy. MIL in good spirits. She still thinks they will just take it out and will be okay. Prayers continue. Needed to go to grocery last Friday. Haven't made it yet.....now desperate. Out of eggs, milk, bread, yogurt, cottage cheese, veggies. Hmmmm. Really have to go. Even frozen fruit down to one serving. Guess I will go.
I love you ladies!

M – I like the way you can shop at home. What do they do about coupons?
Michele NC
We don't have coupons. It's been a decade or more since I've seen a coupon for a retail (grocery, chemist, department store, etc.) product.
We can get Entertainment Guides with coupons for restaurants and entertainment. And occasionally the newspaper might have something like that too.

Good hygiene for coronavirus (COVID-19)
Everyone can slow the spread of COVID-19 by washing their hands frequently, covering their coughs, putting tissues straight into a bin, avoiding touching their eyes, nose and mouth, cleaning regularly used objects and surfaces and ventilating their home or workspace.

Penny, your life in the north intrigues me. It would not be what I would choose for myself, but I believe that’s the fascination. An adventure, most assuredly, but one to savor and compare with my adventure, which right now consists of mating sure my Expedia Adbenture to Oaxaca Mexico is cancelled and figuring out what the heck an airline credit will be useful for when it is issued and how long it’s good for. Many stumbling blocks lie ahead, I fear!
Dear SuziQ, I’m so pleased someone besides me is fond of spiders. I was terrified of them until I decided to counter-condition myself. I now find them fascinating to watch and to read about. I usually have a good-sized wolf spider or two in residence during the winter. I don’t always see them, but I know they’re there by their frizzy little webs in odd corners. One year I had one who’d come out to be fed. I’d drop a fly or some such in her web and she’d come barreling out to dispatch it and haul it into her lair under the sink pedestal.
Angela in Alabama, I hear you loud and clear. I spent more than 50 years yo-yo dieting, and finally resorted to gastric bypass surgery two years ago. I was then 75, so I just decided I was never, after getting down to the weight I wanted three times and always gaining it back plus more, going to get there by that route. But this group helped me stick with my very strict guidelines. We are more than a group of older women relating to each other through our weight loss journeys - we are a true caring community who share a great deal more about our lives besides calories and Miracle Diets. I hope you’ll stay and contribute.
Machka, the Berkeley (California) Co-Op of the late 60s stays in my memory as almost that idyllic. It was semi-miraculous to someone raised on the supermarkets of the Midwest.
Lanette, thanks for the update on the tp issue. Rather than spin and pull, ive gone to 2 sheets for #1 and 4 for nirmal #2. That’s taken me from 1 week per roll to 13 days, or almost double.
Heather, I felt very glad that your DDIL feels relief and has had some positive results from her Autism diagnosis. I strongly suspect I am on the spectrum. My DGS was diagnosed at 1-1/2 and it has given him a chance at a more normal life than he could have expected without the help his family got early on.
I’m not done. I’m reading page 64, but must stop and sleep. I need to be at work by 10AM tomorrow.

Karen - I don't do any other groups. I am so not a joiner! This thread is a complete exception for me and out of character. I have been here for coming up to 8 years in August.
I don't do Friends, challenges, Twitter, Instagram, much Facebook, much anything. I don't play games, or belong to any special interest groups. I hate to belong, or be tied down. I don't have pets, or even plants that can't look after themselves. No house plants, or anything that needs watering. Oh, I do have a basil on my kitchen windowsill.
IRL I go to Singing for Pleasure and Swing Dancing and French Circle, but even that is a stretch for me. I am a customer at those activities, I never join committees, or boards, or meetings. I don't do groups at all well.
When I tell people I belong to this thread they think I've had a brainstorm, it's so out of character.
This thread is a lifeline for me and I value each and every one of you.
When I did Karen's strengths quiz my top strength was Curiosity and my lowest was Teamwork. I think what I like about this thread is that I don't have to be in a team, our only purpose is to give and get support for all our disparate needs. We are all so, so different, but we are all human beings. All women of a certain age. We can all give of our different strengths and we can all show our vulnerabilities. Barbie has done a great job over the years of moderating the thread and keeping us on the straight path, avoiding factionalism, religion, politics, etc. It is a rare thing and I cherish it. We are all part of it, but no one is defined by it. Except we try to be fit and healthy.
Thank you everyone.

I don’t remember the strengths quiz. I wonder whether I can find it.
We had a surprise delivery of movie theater popcorn earlier today. It put a big smile on my face & I ate more than my share. 🍿4 -
It was the VIA institute quiz, just recently.
We were meant to be at the highlight of the cruise today, the Geiranger Fjord. I had booked myself in for a RIB trip this morning and we had a coach tour of the mountain scenery with a musical performance in a church for this afternoon.
The weather is sleet and moderate wind with heavy cloud cover. 3° C this morning for my boat trip.
All I can say is Phew!
Here it is in nice weather!
Lovely! I doubt we could have seen much of the mountain tops. The RIB trip went up to that waterfall.
Still waiting for my money back.

Hello one and all.
Karen - Congratulations! You are reminding all of us we can move outside of our comfort zones and remake ourselves at any point in time.
Machka - I need to print the hand washing poster and tape it up on the bathroom mirrors at work. I have always been a bit of a germophobe and wash my hands as if I am going in to surgery. I actually changed all my my bathroom faucets so I do not have to use my hands to shut off the water. I am also happy work installed electronic eyes in the bathroom faucets so the water turns on when hands are under the faucet - no touching at all.
So many things to be grateful for today.- I awakened to a new day on this planet we call earth.
- The much-needed rain. SFL is approaching drought levels and we need all of the rain possible to make it through the summer.
- My home. It provides security and shelter.
- The healthy food in my house.
- The rainy day. It will force me to complete a few indoor chores I have been putting off for a rainy day.
I am a little disappointed with our Governor's decision to open the beaches up today. Florida is one of the hot States and I think it is way too early to open the beaches. There are limited hours and one can swim but cannot hang on the beach. I think the police are going to have their hands full monitoring this situation as most of our beaches are very crowded and not everyone is on board with social distancing. I am praying this does not cause another spike of cases here and simply feel it is an irresponsible decision. I think there are many more controlled businesses/operations that could have been opened. I will be staying at home and will continue my very limited outings for essentials. I am actually more nervous now with the rush to open things up.
Since these decisions are out of my control I will not dwell on them. I can only protect myself and will continue to monitor what is going on and again protect myself.
My cynical self thinks they want more of us to get sick in the hopes to speed up herd immunity. From everything I am hearing/reading it will take a minimum of 70% of the population. Something to think about.......
Well, it is off to the races for me! Lots to do and enjoy.

We've never made a successful vaccine for a coronavirus before. This is why it's so difficult.

I've said all along that we are nearly all going to get this eventually, especially as lockdown is eased. It's just better to get it once the peak has passed, in case we have to go to hospital. Very vulnerable people will have to isolate themselves until an effective vaccine is produced. My ex husband is in that position. There is no way he can go back to normal life until there is a very effective vaccine. Anyone who is old or who has health vulnerabilities has to wait in isolation. The virus will be out there for quite a while.

COVID-19: Exercise may protect against deadly complication
https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-04/uovh-cem041520.php#
"Regular exercise may reduce the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome, a major cause of death in patients with the COVID-19 virus, a top exercise researcher reports. He is urging people to exercise based on his findings, which also suggest a potential treatment approach."
AIR CONDITIONING APPEARS TO SPREAD CORONAVIRUS—BUT OPENING WINDOWS COULD STOP IT, STUDIES SUGGEST
https://www.newsweek.com/air-conditioners-spread-coronavirus-1497933
"Opening windows in buildings, including our homes, may prevent the spread of the coronavirus, scientists believe.
"Further research is needed to understand the impact of natural light on SARS-CoV-2 indoors; however, in the interim, daylight exists as a free, widely available resource to building occupants with little downside to its use and many documented positive human health benefits," the team argued.
People should try to open blinds and shades when possible to let in "abundant daylight and sunlight," they suggested."
https://www.worldobesity.org/news/statement-coronavirus-covid-19-obesity
"Obesity-related conditions seem to worsen the effect of COVID-19; indeed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that people with heart disease and diabetes are at higher risk of COVID-19 complications.
Furthermore, persons with obesity who become ill and require intensive care present challenges in patient management as it is more difficult to intubate patients with obesity, it can be more challenging to obtain diagnostic imaging (as there are weight limits on imaging machines), patients are more difficult to position and transport by nursing staff and, like pregnant patients in ICUs, they may not do well when prone."

Morning, afternoon and evening all,
Katla, My sympathies for your family's loss.
Kylia, My heart goes out to your family as you go through this with your mother-in-law.
Was going to go into a long disquisition on the development of genetic immunity, but figured I'd go ahead and dump that on the unsuspecting folks on Medium, so pushed it all into a draft over there and will work on it afterward. You're welcome.
In my happy place, my office at home, laundry whirring, husband just stumbled into the kitchen for coffee, and in about a half hour, I'll take him another cup. My life has changed so little in comparison with most that I feel guilty on occasion. Truly grateful for that circumstance, however.
Regarding the return to work push - it was inevitable. We are not a patient people, and seriously, the American mentality as a whole is just not set up to truly internalize and understand that the reason the numbers are this low so far is because of isolating and distancing. I believe Heather is right, that we will all get it eventually, we just want to do it after the initial rush, so to speak.
But the vast majority of those pushing for a quick reopen genuinely believe the predictions were overblown, that we're destroying our economy for no reason, and that all us scaredy-cats need to get over it.
Not saying that's what I feel at all, by the way.
But I am saying that's what got poured into my ear by the brother I spoke to yesterday. Which is at least part of the reason I distanced myself from him about ten years ago. Saying we are polar opposites is genuinely underestimating the chasm between us. Anything else I say would be driving into the political, and not appropriate here. Honestly, there's a reason I don't talk to any of my brothers - politics for this one, religion for the two who became preachers, and the other is a honky-tonking, hard-drinking idiot at the age of 69. Ah well. You can't pick your relatives. Unless you count your spouse as a relative.
Speaking of which, my husband brought home a new (to us) zero-turn mower last night that he bought for $200 from a guy at work because it wasn't running. (They cost in the thousands of dollars both new and used, usually). After tinkering with it after work each day this week, he did all the necessary fixes, so it was running like a top when he brought it home. I tried it out and scared the living crap out of myself - push one lever forward an inch, and all of a sudden you're doing a 360-degree pirouette while sitting on a very large, very noisy piece of machinery. And doing it so quickly that it generates G-forces. Very few machines scare me--but my heart was beating so hard I could barely breathe by the time I gave I clambered off of it. I know I'll get used to it, but dang... That said, what took hours before will genuinely take minutes with this mower. It's insanely efficient.
After I take my husband his coffee, I'm headed to Walmart to do a grocery pickup--it's a no-touch process now, and they put it all in your trunk and you never even have to sign for it. Our nearby store has also opened up many more items than groceries now for this kind of pickup, as well. I'm also buying ear plugs and safety glasses to use while I drive that beastie that Corey brought home, for instance.
They've even opened up the 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. hour for only those 60 and over, which I've qualified for now for two weeks. I don't know why I find delivery of groceries creepy, but I do. Instead, I add to an order all week long and pick up on early weekend mornings. Gives me time to think and rethink whether I actually need things, which keeps our bills low, as well.
Off to the races,

SuziQ - I love German breakfast where they often have cheese, cold meats and, yes, avocado.
In Turkey that kind of salsa/salad is very common for breakfast. Yummo, I say!
Arranged a Zoom for 3 pm.
Also just bought to have delivered a robot talking dog for Max's birthday on the 6th May. My son was instructed by Max to buy it, but they need to buy him a bigger bike, so my son has passed it over to me. He wants me to buy it, wrap it, and bring it over to leave it outside and say hello through the window. He said he would pay some money towards it, but i said not to worry as we aren't spending any money at the moment!

Machka, I'm aware it's weird - but we do get few deliveries out here. Too far out for pizza or the restaurants who deliver. I did get an alert sensor set up outside, so if anything larger than a dog breaks the beam, it sounds off inside the house. This was all pre-coronavirus, by the way - I genuinely hate surprises, and the Fedex and UPS guys are the only ones that visit anything like regularly.3
